Good evening, im iain page. Im lucy noland. It has been quite the weekend. And this was the popes last day in philadelphia. His last day in the United States. Lets take look back. Philadelphia bids farewell to pope francis. Before boarding shepherd one at Philadelphia International airport the holy father had one final message to the city. Please know i prepare to leave. I do with a heart full of gratitude and hope. The pontiffs goodbye capping off another packed day in the city of brotherly love. Starting at the Saint CharlesBorromeo Seminary addressing the bishops. At times trying to laugh. How many women telling me, my son is the 30, 34 years old and hes not getting married. I dont know what to do. I say dont iron his shirts any more. Then it was on curranfromhold correct al facility. Accustomed chair built by prisoners and staff as gift gets the thumbs up after speaking about the importance of rehabilitation, pope francis greeted each prisoner with a smile and a hand shake. A quick break and surprise trip to st. Josephs university in wynnefield. Pope francis then led his second parade down the parkway kissing baby after baby after baby along the way. And finally, the papal mass. Security lines for blocks some waiting hours. Some not able to get in at all. But in the end, almost 1 Million People packed the parkway. I ask you pray for me. Dont forget. That is pope francis with one of his personal moments with a very very grand celebration of a papal mass for the masses. There were so many people here. There were. Again, almost 860,000 people on the parkway. Of course, looking at video there was heavy security today and lot of people had to go flew magnetometers to get to this particular papal mass. In fact Chris Oconnell spoke to some people who said, you know, even though they had to wait long time, it was worth it. Chris. Reporter yeah, iain, with and estimated 860,000 people coming to town, possibly more, mayor nutter just told us, there are bound to be some hiccups. Yes, among the prayers of all the joy, there was a little frustration. They came from every continent, from all corners of the world. Getting inside the papal mass on the parkway may have been the hardest trip of them all. Some waiting in security lines for up to four hours to get inside. Everybody move over. Single file against the fence. Reporter many of them never made it. They never saw the pope. Took us three hours to move block and a half and then they said they werent letting anybody else on the parkway. I missed the whole thing. I missed everything. Single file. Reporter but for those who did make the through the maze of secret service security, it was all worthwhile. For a small glimpse of pope francis in his pope mobile driving around logan circle many wait add lifetime for this moment. It was mazing. He really was amazing. Weve been here we left 8 00 oclock this morning and weve been here for hours but for two seconds he drove by it was well worth it. Never seen anything like it. So many people so excited. So happy. And it was amazing. Reporter now we just asked mayor nutter about that crowd situation. He told us that the parkway was completely full. The secure zone there was over phil already coming in so the people that didnt get in it was just bad luck. They said possibly poor planni planning. But some folks said it was up to four hours to get into the papal festival. Guys. All right, chris. We know it took long time. So many people almost Million People out here on the parkway today trying to catch a glimpse of pope francis. Imagine being one of these families that had your baby with you and then suddenly your baby is whisked off and pope francis blesses your baby. Well, guess what, our Dave Schratwieser is live in center city, and dave, you talk to one of though families. Reporter yes, i did. Let me give you a quick spot shot first the clean up has begun here on the parkway as you can see 800 something thousand on the parkway we saw the pope make the round in the pope mobile stopping to kiss and bless babies much one of them families was the mom and dad with their son of four month old noah from newark, new jersey. Heres what they had to say after they got to see the pope and their baby was kissed by the pope. Thats something big. Someone just told me all his sinsins are ashed away. He has a clean slate and i guess all of us do, too, because in the end were all for one reason because god loves us. This is a huge blessing for all of us. At first there was Security Guard at the front and i remember one of them he look at the baby and he said, no, and then i felt really like heart broken, but then, someone another one came, my mom was yelling we were all yelling and you know he just grabbed him and took him. We were waiting since last night. Last night we were here for like since 12 00 oclock since noon until like 9 00 oclock at night waiting and then in the end he just passed, you know, i guess we got our chance today. Reporter interesting. While we talk to the family, with several hundred people around them, the baby slept through the whole thing. Blessed baby indeed. Back to you guys. Absolutely, dave. You know pope francis expressed his gratitude to about 400 leaders of the world meeting of families supporters and other volunteers who helped organize this trip to philadelphia. Vicepresident joe biden and his wife dr. Jill biden were among those at the airport sending pope francis off. There you see them. Archbishop chaput told the pope we hate to see you go. When he was actually little bit of ahead of schedule everything was choreographed the pope actually took off a little bit early much our bruce gordon was there when the pope took off from the airport. Reporter the pope managed from his now famous fiat to offer a final farewell to a host of dignitaries led by vicepresident biden, pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and philadelphia mayor michael nutter. Among those on hand for the send off, Cardinal OharaHigh School Marching what happened from springfield, delaware county. Earlier in the evening i talk to junior clary nest marie. Performing in front of many people cannot compare to performing in front of the pope. Like it makes my heart very happy and thats the most important thing to me. Reporter during six day swing through washington, new york and philadelphia, pope francis met with the mighty and ministered to the meek. In philly he created lasting memories at Independence Hall and a city prison. With honored guest at the festival of families. And celebrated mass for nearly 900,000 on the parkway. The host archdiocese was left he can siller rated. The holy fathers time here this weekend, bruce, has been incredible. Youve seen him as a father, as a help shepherd, as teacher, as a fellow human being. He reached out to us, our city, weve all embraced him. Hes taught us so much of the bottom line we need to take this moment as guest and it cant just be one moment in time of lets keep it forever and the best way to do that to follow his advice. Just to be better people. To be kinder to the human beings we know we see every day. In the days and weeks ahead there will be plenty of time for second guessing and micro analysis, all kinds of questions come to mind with security too tight . Were local businesses impacted in a negative way . Were the crowds as big as everyone had expected . All legitimate question. But for now at least city officials have reason to be very proud. A major event of historic and religious significance has been pulled off with very few flaws. For that everyone involved in this event has reason to be very proud. At the airport, im Bruce Gordon Fox 29 news. Just a mirror few hours ago there were so many people surrounding iain and i right here on the parkway. Well take live look and show it to you. You know behind us was pope francis wearing i have to say what look like to be eagles green but those were the vestments that he was supposed to be wearing as he celebrated mass. Exactly. Eagles won today. Second biggest story in the city today. They were zerotwo got their first wip. Shawnette will on is live now with eagles fans who shawnette have turned their season around after dadas big win. Reporter pretty funny by the way, lucy. Fans say when you combine football and faith you get a win and theyre calling this one a holy one. Signs of the pope are everywhe everywhere. And sports bars showing the eagles game today are no exception. Let me correct that. The eagles winning game that is. I think the pope is a blessing eagles are onetwo. The pope. We thank the pope. Reporter fans are calling the eagles first win of the season a holy one. Chickies and petes in south philly fans didnt have to choose between football and faith. Right after the game those who wanted to see the pope could also see the mass on few of the big screens. I was watching it. Yes. We both were. I thought it was we were here last night and we both were glued to the tv. Its awesome. Reporter how much of this had to do with chip kelly versus the pope being in filly . Um, i think he definitely wrote letter to the pope maybe put it at the pope dome, you know, praying for win today, and he got it. Reporter joe says the eagles win is the if you until toll a great weekend in philadelphia. Football, you get 16 weeks out of every year. Pope once in a lifetime, you cant put a price tag on that. Reporter and the next game will be the true test the eagles take on the redskins it will be on sunday. The pope will be gone. Iain and lucy . Were actually hoping the pope will come back so we win again. Thanks so much shawnette. Cowboys lost so thats a good thing. This is true. Heres a live look right now at the ben franklin parkway still a beautiful sight but the cleanup is going on you can see a lot of trash trucks and things going on almost Million People here. Were back with more right after this. Take a live look at the empty streets of old city. Pope francis trip to philadelphia brought him everywhere. Were talking holmesburg, lower merion, old city and then the art museum. Exactly he also made an unscheduled stop. Lets bring in our dave kinchen right now whose life at 30th street station. Dave, youve been all around the city today and you were somewhere where the pope made an unscheduled stop at st. Josephs university. Reporter thats right. We want to tell you people here at 30th street station have been steadily getting out of town. Right now its pretty quiet at the moment. Of course but the people that left here were everywhere when the pope was everywhere himself including as you said unscheduled stop at st. Josephs university. History in the making on the campus of st. Josephs university as pope francis honors a statue dedicated to inter faith celebration. Senior nicholas was part of the group welcoming the holy father in this unscheduled appearance. Its unreal. I was saying earlier theres cloud nine and then this feels like cloud 10. Im not sure if it get any more real from here, but im sure it will get much easier to process. More or less, when he approached me, i thanked him for coming to the United States. I thanked him for coming to the university. I told him that we will pray for him and we hope he prays for us. And he assured me he would be. Outside on city line of a thousands watch as the pontiff passed by in his iconic fiat on his way to say mass on the parkway. But the quick glimpse spoke volumes to those we talk with. It was so cool just to see him drive by like the School Spirit everyone was dressed up. That was so exciting. Once in a lifetime opportunity. So excited when he came down and saw it. What did you think . Good. Reporter youre nodding in approval, right . She approved indeed the jesuit pontiff making his trip to st. Josephs University One of the oldest jesuit institutions jesuit universities in the country and he was there this weekend not once, not twice, not thee times, but four times. Four times students say they saw him driving around campus and they wont forget this for as long as they live. Back to you lucy and iain. Dave kinchen the first, second, third and fourth time all the charm g dave thank you very much. Speaking of st. Joes lets take look this was tweeted out today from st. Josephs thats father dan who you saw here on fox 29 this weekend helping with the crowd control today. Ahead of the popes visit. Father dan of course a professor at the university. Look at him there directing everybody. Get down. Get down from the trees. Tweet was saying father dan was telling guys to back up or the pope would not be able to stop by. Secret service didnt want people up in trees. You can understand that here. Bishops applauded pope francis as he walk out of Saint CharlesBorromeo Seminary this morning. Of course, the holy fathers first stop. After a few moments of song on the seminary steps, the pontiff was whisked away in golf cart to awaiting helicopter had the president been on this chopper it would have been marine one so it was on loan from the secret service. He was on his way to curranfromhold Correctional Institution and steve keeley was there and shows us what it was like this morning. Reporter if someone had no clue who has been in town, you would have thought curranfromhold prison was under siege. By land, sea and air, flying in before driving in is now familiar funny but cool little fiat, pope francis not for some big prison break, but a break in the old traditions of just visiting parishes and politicians. This pope cares for prisoners, too. Being confined during this time is not the same, will never be the same as being cast out. Reporter if preach and prayer are tops on priest to do lists prison preaching is not too far down the popes list hes gone to prisons in many countries hes visited in his two and a half years as pope and not just to hang out with white collar non violent types but some of the most violent, here nine accused killers and 15 accused rapists, sat among the group of 80 men and 20 women he talk to in philadelphia. This time in your life can have but one purpose torque give you a helping hand to get back on the right path. To give you a hand to help you rejoin society. All of us are invited to encourage, help and enable your rehabilitation, your rehabilitation which everyone seeks and desires. Reporter rehabilitation skills were on display for him. This ornate chair custom made for him by two dozen prisoners here at the prisons vocation programs. Hand carving wood, carpet tree and up poultry. His popularity skills still on display outside the prison even a mile away. That was the closest anyone from the public was allowed to show and they showed up any way. With the crowd heard he done just before made them love him any more. Aft his talk in the prison he spent time and met with five families of prisons and went down each aisle to prisoner shaking each hasnt. One by one holding some, hug something. Just after telling all jesus comes to save us from the lie that says no one can change. In northeast philly, steve keeley, fox 29 news. Such a powerful, such a beautiful moment there at curranfromhold. You know today lives were most definitely touched if not changed. Absolutely. Great story there. Of course the great story that pope francis reaches out and touches and blesses a lot of kids. Look at this he actually blessed a kid here today who has a miter on. Is that a miter. It is a popes hat. Its a miter exactly. This little kid was kind of dressed up in papal costume and has the miter on. You never know. It could be a pope of the future. You never know. Amazing the Little Things like making eye contact which is a big thing when its the pope. All right. Lets check in with mocks fox 29s kathy orr. We were a little bit worried a few days ago we were going get rain today. But twenty eight beautiful out here today. It certainly was. They used umbrellas only for the priest so you can see him giving out holy communion. Right now were looking at dry conditions. We have a super moon Lunar Eclipse going on and the clouds are clearing but a little bit later on this week, were tal talking about Stormy Weather again that could bring significant rain talk more about that with the seven day forecast coming up. Well as kathy just mentioned, there were about 1500 priests and ukee chris tick ministers with those umbrellas that so many could find them. It was an incredible sight. Were back with more from the ben franklin parkway aft this. The special interests in trthreatening to move ournos casinos and jobs away. This move would harm the local economy, cost thousands of jobs and spike rising property taxes. But, democrats vince mazzeo and colin bell are fighting the special interests to keep Atlantic County jobs, grow the local economy and keep property taxes affordable. Vince mazzeo and colin bell fighting to protect our jobs. And send the north jersey interests home packing. The news just keeps Getting Better as we take live look at the ben franklin parkway. The ben franklin bridge is going to open at 4 00 a. M. And the traffic box mayor nutter says it is lifting should be three quarters open right now. Theres some people trying to get over that bridge. Anything to get in to see the pope. True. Our coverage continues out here to the ben franklin parkway tonight. Weve got Team Coverage for you. Chris oconnell has been out on the parkway but we start with Dave Schratwieser whose in center city for us tonight. Dave. Reporter iain, in the throws of the cleanup here im told its cleaned up near city hall and logan square. So theyre making quick of this. Let me tell you something with 860,000 people on the parkway today to see the pope and see the mass, everyone came here with both motivation and determination. We came in from willow grove but we rode our bicycles so it was about 12 miles. Redirected 18 million times but we ended up on the parkway among the electric crowd. Very exciting. Reporter why was this important to you. The pope pope message is so valuable and important to everyone. Family, individuals for inspiration and hope for the future. Reporter im guessing youre hoping to get up real close . Of course. I dont know about that. Just like to be actually our family. Our family is on the other side and just get close to the area for the mass. I mean we came all the way down of course wed like to see him. On the way in we encountered franciscan father whos blessed, blessed our marriage and blessed the rosary she brought down. It was enough to make me tear up. Former homicide detective he had owed rocks came to the papal mass. All three of his children were working the papal detail. Mass every morning. My oldest son was injured making arrest. Hes on dissable but three of them were out working right now down here. Reporter your thoughts about that . Theyre at work doing public safety. Youre going to mass. Are you going to mass for them, too . Yes. Yes. Just like my mother went to mass for me. Its my turn. Reporter you heard it much its his turn. Let me tell you something the pros out here on the parkway cleaning this place up theyre moving quick. Well libel to have this all cleaned up reasoned to go by the morning, guys. Back to you. All right, dave, massive cleanup job much that is good news. Thank you so much. You know during the popes visit he made several stops including one outside the basilica where he stopped to take a look at the grotto art piece includes 30,000 strips of woven cloth. Not just any cloth each cloth inscribed with prayers of real life struggles faced by members of the Philadelphia Community and beyond. The pope blessed the grotto got back into the pope mobile and on his way to the parkway. And thrilled the crowds one of those people is our very own kathy orr. Kathy you got to come to the mass today. It was absolutely amazing. It was quite a crusade. Quite a journey just to get in. Many people who had standing tickets didnt get in because they had to wait so long. That was unfortunate. But fortunately the weather held out. The skies were cloudy. Little bit of sun i noticed right over pope francis during part of the mass. It was amazing. So true. There was. Just little bit of sun. So tonight, we have a whole different story weather wise. Take look at this. This is a super moon Lunar Eclipse its going on right now. So good outside after the broadcast, see if you can see it. The moon will appear brighter and larger thats super part of it. Lunar eclipse has gun and it will be in totality until about 11 00 oclock and then ending at about 1 00 a. M. So there you have it. A super moon Lunar Eclipse as the pope departs philadelphia. Right now youre seeing the cloud cover give way especially in new jersey, parts of pennsylvania. Thats the best viewing tonight for the Lunar Eclipse just need to get away from the city lights and youll have perfect view. Temperature 67 very comfortable. Winds out of the east northeast at 9 miles an hour. And that Lunar Eclipse will be until 1 00 a. M. So you still have time to see it. Right now in philadelphia, were at mild sometime temperatures in the poconos 58 degrees. 66 through dover and wildwood. 64 degrees in lancaster. Its going to be dry for the next couple of days but then well watch a frontal boundary tuesday approach from the west an area of low pressure offsho offshore. And well see these two merge to provide a lot of moisture. Tuesday night into wednesday. That is going to be the time to watch. Were not just talking about an inch of rain. It could be inches of rain. So between wednesday evening or i should say tuesday peek into wednesday afternoon possibly up to 2inches in philadelphia. And higher accumulations as you head towards south jersey one to 3inches of rain not out of the question early this week. So overnight in the city, parly cloudy, 6063. In our suburbs 56. Partly cloudy skies, a light breeze with winds out of the northeast. On the exclusive seven day forecast, monday 83, tuesday warm again. But you get the rain moving in. That lingers into wednesday. Thursday a cool breeze and the same goes for friday. Look at this. Were back into the 60s hopefully not staying there for good. But those rain chances continue into next week with another weather maker. I want to leave you with this. This is a tweet that i sent out. This picture came to me from is man that fleming pope francis reacts to a Radnor High School students sign which said pope francis, we will pray for you. That was something that the pope had said at the very end of ma mass. Remember, pray for me. Lucy and iain i want to leave you with this. We captured the flight plan from pope francis so leaving philadelphia you can see hes over the ocean en route to italia and there you have it. What an amazing weekend. Well zen it back to you on the parkway. Kathy, thank you so much. So pope francis is over the ocean and you know that a lot of people are over the super moon tonight over this one because its just been amazing day. So many people packing into the parkway. The estimate is 860,000 or so. Exactly. They were expecting a million and a half. Nonetheless there were a lot. Some people had difficulty getting in. But nonetheless it was a happy experience. Mayor nutter had talk about that leading into one of the challenges of this weekend was going to be getting all these people through security but overall it was a Job Well Done according to mayor nutter. Folks were tremendously cooperative. I heard nothing but positive reviews from visitors and Law Enforcement especially the Pennsylvania National guard i just talk to one of their commanders and said that the citizens treated them very very nicely. I talk to people who were from other parts of the United States all around the world. They told me philadelphians were tremendously kind. They were warm. They were helpful. Which is a wonderful thing. However my heart goes out to all the people that got on the
