Reporter his own political stock, albeit small, soared during the International Custody fight for elian gonzalez. When the u. S. Returned his little prince, castro called the moment a moral victory over impermist america. The man who would lead the small caribbean island to communism was educated by jesuit preach and earned his law degree by the university of revolution in 1953 while 30 of his followingers were killed attacking the barracks. Castro was in prison, then deported, but made his way back on an overloaded power boat. After a decade of coups, riots and political rebellion, the people despaired of the government of baa ecstacies at that. He stepped down, left the country and castro seized power on january 1, 1959. He held on for nearly 50 years. Cuba opened its island doors to Pope John Paul ii, the holy father and the man that chained down cubas churches shared words before the world. Critic s would call the historic meeting little more than a Public Relations campaign. In the summer of 2006, castro underwent surgery for intestinal bleeding and quietly succeeded power to his younger brother, a rule. In february 2008, castro announced we no longer serves in chief. A surprising move few thought they would live to see. By the end of the month, the countrys National Assembly formally elected raul to succeed his brother fidel. When president obama announced the softening of u. S. Sankings against cuba in 2014, president raul castro spoke to the american president by telephone welcoming the announcement. But the man who brought Public Comment on the ending of the cold war freeze he would usher in more than half century earlier. In washington, brett bahr, fox news. Alcides there are a lot of questions moving forward. Does this change americas relationship with cuba. We have a new president elect with donald trump. Sass stroh was sick in recent years and many say he played a factor on government decisions, but it will be interesting to see how his brother leads the island nation and what that means for folks in the bay area and we will hear local reaction coming up in about a minute. But first check in with jim with a look at your forecast. Hey, jim. Jim a pretty mild start to the day with temperatures running in the mid60s. The northern gulf of mexico. We actually have a cold front that is lined up back to the north and west moving down the state as we go through the afternoon and what it will do is continue with some scattered clouds but also bring some degrees as we go through the next couple of days. Outside right now 67 degrees. That dew point, that has been creeping up the past couple of days. At 60 and giving us humidity at 79 and winds are out of the north at 9 miles per hour. Mild temperatures through the middle of the state. Do you see the cooler temperatures once you get moot panhandle with temperatures in the lower 50s. That is some of that cooler their will continue to sink down the state, dropping our temperatures by just degree as we go throughout next couple of days and the big things are the lower humidity. For today, mix of sun and clouds and daytime high back up into the upper 70s, a little bit above where we expect to be for this time of the year. We will talk about that next cold front, and yet another front which looks like it will give us some rain coming up in a little bit, alcides. Lets go back to that developing story we first told you back if he beginning of the castro has died at the age of 90 years old. A large cuban population here in tampa bay. Kellie cowan is live to get local reaction on this historic day. Kelly, are people saying out there . Reporter a lot quieter than the scene in miami at this point. But people that are that i have been able to speak to so far. There has been some mixed reaction but overall it seems positive. People are happy with this news that finally this might signal i am joined by tampa city councilman and son of a cuban refugee. And i guess if could you just start with your reaction and your familys reaction to the news overnight. Well, this is something very interesting for a dictator to last this long in power. My family left in 1961 and here we are 55 years later finally getting this news so my first my mother in 1961, how she feels today. Reporter how is she fee feeling . I will see her in a little bit to get her reaction, but, you know, it comes it comes at a time when most of her relatives are already gone. Everybody has left cuba years ago so what will she go back to, not at all. At this point, she is an american and she has been here for for over 50 years and a sigh of relief because she witnessed first hand what this communist redeem did taking over in 1959 and what came afterwards. And off camera you were kind of telling me about the hope she originally had in fidel castro when he was first rising to power and then how quickly that shattered. Can you explain that . Well, the illusion of what they called the revolution was just a perpetual lie. Promised a free and open elections after a search period of time. Everything was going to be great. My grand mothers own words were, when castro came into power it was as if god god was on earth and, of course, very shortly after taking control, he declared himself a communist and, of course, you know, History Speaks for that. But it was it was all a lie to take that per tired of the bautista regime. The message was to oust the corruption in that current government. So castro brought this new vision of hope, which in turn was was just to spread a communist doctrine throughout the island. And you said a lot of your family went ahead and left because things started to get really bad and your family was witnessing some horrific things. The revolution took place mother who was 3 left, leaving my grandfather behind because they operated a Little Grocery store in havana just to see what was going to happen. This was before the bay of pigs. And any possible intervention that could have taken place. After nine months, my grandfather left with a s suitcase just like my mother and grandmother did and he joined them in miami for a short period of time and they came to tampa. Camera another thing that you said is that it is important to remember exactly how this regime was. Because you said i think you compared it to denials of things like atrocities from the holocaust or other atrocities around the world. You want people to be aware of exactly what this regime did. I mean, one has to understand what communism is and what a dictatorship is l like. For castro to have maintained this power from 1959 onward because it is although he public executions, no freedom of speech. No right to bear arms. You know, what our constitution allows us and protects us in our freedoms here, you couldnt have that in cuba. You know, my grandmother will tell me stories of people on the street corners listening to everything that you said. Listening to the radio at night and having to listen to it at such low volume. Putting it right to your ear to make sure nobody else heard what they were listening to. Whatever it was. Granted here in the United States. The freedom of speech. The right to bear arms. The first and second amendment. In cuba you dont have it and thats how you control the people. First in overthrowing the government. Back then would you take over the radio stations and media and then you control the message. Then you would take away their weapons so people cant defend themselves against the government. I believe under castro the spanish] which is arms for what. Why do we i need guns when the government will protect us and that is the lie and how they maintain control. Reporter wick before we go because we are running out of time here, but i want to ask yu, do you see this as more symbolic, castro passing away, or do you think might be the beginning of change in cuba. The face or the image of the illusion of what they call the revolution which is a lie dies with fidel castro cegavara was a factor in it as one of the original people in the revolution, but fidel being the key person in power for so long symbolically is the end of an era. We see what happens with raul moving forward with the country and their government. Reporter thank you so much for joining us and hopefully you will stick around with us a little bit more. We will be talking. Guido himself the great historian will be talking about coming up. Alcides fidel castro for apart millions of families including my own. I know a lot of people are happy about it, but again mixed reaction overall here in the bay area. Kellie, thank you so much for your time. Reporter absolutely. The time is 8 11. Jim well, we really had a lot of warm weather this past couple of days after the brief cooldown at the beginning of the week and we have a cool front working its way down the state for today and by tom tomorrow, our temperatures are a little bit cooler but the big thing is lower humidity working its way down the state and then yet another cold front that will be working its way we get into the middle of next week. That front looks like it could bring some pretty big storms across much of the southeast by the time it gets over us. It will weaken substantially and there will be enough moisture around to give us some rain, and you know what, we need the rain because so far this month, we have only had 100th of an inch of rain. November is typically our driest month of the year, but to say we only had 100 for the 67 degrees ride now up in westchase, 63. New tampa at 65. We are going to see these topping out in the upper 70s. There is the cold front back to the north that will be swinging down the state as we go through a lot of drier air working its way down the state. The cold air is all locked up to the north and this time around no mechanism to really push a lot of that colder air down over us. Partly cloudy skies for today. Daytime high, 78 degrees in for tonight as the front moves through, we are clearing out the skies and an overnight low of 58 degrees for tomorrow. From tampa bays number one news station, this is good day tampa bay. Alcides welcome back. The sometime 8 30. Nine days of National Mourning death of former cuban president fidel castro. He died late last night at the age of 90. Castro handed over power to his younger brother raul back in 2008. Castros death had thousands in miami on the streets even celebrating right now. And tampa has a huge cuban population as well, and this morning people are waking up of the news of the longtime dictators death and kellie cowan is live in ybor city with more on local reaction for us good morning, kellie. Reporter good morning to you, alcides. A lot more of a subdued reaction here in tampa so far as people wake up to the news. I am joined by tampa city councilman, greedo manscalco the son of a cuban refugee. You said one of the things that popped up on your phone this morning, but fidel castro has a legacy here of sorts in tampa. And last night we were kind of talking about the history. Your your grandparents being in c cuba. Your mother being in cuba during his rise to power but a lot of that started right here in tampa. Not that castro has a legacy here in tampa or ybor city. The island of cuba with the city of tampa have a long history going back to the late 1800s with cigars and vicente yb or, and being the cigar capital, tampa cigars with i know thats could stroh was here in the 1950s promoting his agenda. 1955 or so i believe. Maybe at the cuban club, you know, coming down here back then. This is before the revolution, before the embargo, but, you know, the cuban club itself has the history of past cuban leaders that have walked through the doors up until up until the 1960s or the embargo and revolution. And speeches here in the 19 50s. He did a lot of fund raising here in ybor city. But you mentioned kind of the betrayal and that he felt once he took power in cuba. Can you explain what your parents have told you . Well, i mean, just looking it up, you know, with an interview with meet the press in 1959, castro said he is no the a communist. He declared over and over how but then very quickly that changed with his rise to power and his control. And, of course, cuba turned to that. That to communist set of ideas or whatever it was, but remember in the 40s and 1950s, after china, after korea, you know, the spread of communism and the containment of communism was a very serious and very real threat, so having cuba so close to the United States, here in the western hemisphere, i know president eisenhower at the time was much opposed and aware of what could possibly happen. And with castros rise to power saying he was not a communist and then moving toward that, you know, it posed a real threat, especially with the soviets at the time in collaboration with the cubans. Reporter you were saying in our last hit how quickly the country changed after after his rise to power and that eventually prompted your grandparents to leave, take your mother with them to leave, i just want to ask you very quickly, you know, with the thawing relations we have had over the years, now a lot of people are able to travel back to cuba. You yourself havent gone yet, but what are your feelings of going back to cuba . Well see. One day i would like to visit. I would like to visit for the fact i want to see where my mother was born. Where my grand mother was born. Where my grandfather had his Little Grocery store in havana for family historys sake. I know it is country. And i want to witness it for myself before, you know just looking at videos or watching or seeing photographs of it. But because my family was from there would make me want to go. Reporter sounds like you have conflicted feelings about it. Well see, i mean, a lot of my friends that want to go, they picture cuba as a cuba of pre1959. They think it is all this this big beautiful playground, communist rule, what has been destroyed there in that cou country. Really how poor that country is. It is not the the romanticism that we give it. You have the reality when off failed infrastructure when you have people that are hungry and food that is rationed. So many rules in place that have harmed the people, you know, it is not what you see from professors of the 1950s. The reality sets in. Reporter Council Perspective this morning. And we will be out here live. We will check in with you about 9 oclock, alcides. Alcides all right, kellie, thank you so much. A mild start to the morning 37 a lot of cloud cover throughout the morning, but starting to see at least a few breaks in these clouds throughout the interior, places like lakeland have quite a bit of cloud cover. 64 degrees right now. And along the coastline, we are seeing a bit more sun. 66. Notice the winds are primarily currently out the westnorthwest at 6 miles per hour. The satellite view over the state continues to show more of the clouds working their way down the state, and we will continue to deal with these as we go into the rest of the morning into the afternoon. A cold front which is moving down the state. That is going to bring a little bit of drier air and little bit of cooler air as well. So you are not going to see a dramatic change but at least get rid of some of this humidity that sort of built back up over the past few days. Outside right now at 67 degrees. That dew point has climbed up to 60 making the humidity at 79 . Currently our winds are out of the north at 9 miles per hour. So another warm one for today. We will see a mix of sun and clouds. And these daytime highs into the upper 70s. Another cold front headed our way that could give us some rain into the middle of next week and that is coming up in a little bit, alcides. Jim, thank you. In jacksonville, a cruise ship crashes into a bridge there. Somehow became wedged undernooelt jacksonvilles main street bridge. The coast guard says the boat is not damaged. Inspection officers are trying to figure out how it happened. The bridge will remain closed until inspection. And an alligator attack in south florida lands a man in the hospital. Rescue crews say he was hundred hundred dollarsing for ducks near the everglades yesterday afternoon when an alligator bit him on the thigh. It appears to be a flesh wound. The 50yearold is expected to be okay turn in central florida. A man is facing attempted murder charges after stabbing both of his parents, that is according to officers there. Deputies found 34yearold Edwin Doherty walking down the street. They believe he and his mother got into an argument. Some sort of a fight. Edwin placed her in a headlock. When his father started to intervene, he put anymore a headlock and he grabbed a steak knife and stabbed his father to his mother. I happened to look out and see ambulances and police and fire trucks and the next thing i know, i found out there had been a stabbing. Witnesses who were sitting at the dinner table saw the entire thing unfold. They say they saw edwin stab his parents before leaving that house. So no matter how Different Things become, were always here. Its the story welcome back. The story we have been following all morning long on good day tampa bay. Fidel castro has died at the age of 90. His brother, raul, made the announcement on cuban state Television Late last night and castros death could have a big impact when it comes to international poti live by phone. Craig, are you there . [inaudible] all right, craig is not there. Nina, what are we going to do, toss to break and maybe get back to it caller hello. Alcides craig, can you hear me. Caller i can hear you, alcides can you hear me. Alcides i can. I appreciate it. In the world of politics is his death more symbolic or of an impact. Caller we think it will be more symbolic, when he became ill he passed his powers to his brother, a cool you castro. He had a contentious rel relationship with the United States dating back to 11 president s. And because raul is running the country and the u. S. Is normalizing relations with cuba normalizing relations with cuba. The transition of power in washington will have a much impact of the passing of fidel. Alcides i want to talk about the president elect donald trump in just a second, but first information that is being released from cuba. Here is what we know. Nine days of National Mourning. The government is not allowing any Public Events or shows in the entire country. Flags are flying at halfstaff. Radio and tv shows can only play patriotic news and information. On tuesday, there is a massive revolution. And december 4, which is the 9th day here, next sunday, the dictators ashes will be placed at church there, and apparently it will be placed near jose marti which obviously marti has a very a big impact on cuban cuban politics as well and what he has been able to do for that country. What do you think the local reaction snrb we spoke to a city councilman earlier i mean for representatives like kathy castor. Caller people with connections to cuba will not mourn the passing of fidel castro. Very different. Jose mart hi an impact on cuba and the connection to tampa. But fidel castro by many in this country was seen as the as the tyrant that he was. He brought the world to the brink of nuclear war going back something that many in our government have been hoping f for, a passing of the torch, but not passing it the way that he has several years ago. There certainly wont be the type of mourning in the United States that you will see in cuba, and the fact that the staterun television and the government is dick taiingt the terms as dictating the terms of the government as it is are telling the current climate of cuba which is quite oppressive. We were in cuba earlier this year with president obama you saw to what extent is the government controlled messaging and with that, it is very interesting to see the president of the United States try to speak correctly to the cuban people of which he did. And in this case, you are going to see the cuban government clamp down of course and be very, very careful in terms of what is communicated of the passing of its former dictator. Alcides craig, we are seeing video from miami. Its streets holding cuban flags and celebrating and this it continuing this morning. We are interested in see what the local reaction is going to be. About what does this mean for cubau. S. Relations. Will that change at all, do you think . Caller yes, i suspect it will change. I expect it will change with the new administration of President Trump because several days, five or six days before the election, mr. Trump traveled to miami and promised an end cuban thaw that we have seen play out since 2014. We have the new administration as it is coming together in washington that takes a far different approach to our relationship with cuba. The Obama Administration has long held the belief that if you open the door to cuba and you help the people who are struggling by no fault of their own, due to the fault of the government that they will become more you will have revolution or change from Trump Administration taking a very different perspective. Alcides very interesting to see how all of this will play out. Craig patrick, we are running out of time. Easily we can talk about this for another 15, 20 minutes. Hopefully grab you again at 9 00 this morning. Great to see and hear your perspective as well. Craig patrick. Thank you very carrabbas new meatball magnifico. You went outside and, boy, what a change we had, and again on monday morning, we had those 20s across the area. Well, we warmed up quickly past couple of days, 83 degrees both on thanksgiving and on black friday. For today, a little bit cooler than that, and we are still looking for abovenormal temperatures. The normal high for today is 76 degrees. Already we are at 67 here in tampa. Westchase, 66 degrees along with new tampa. Brandon at 70 degrees and downtown st. Petersburg. Pinellas park has a 69. Week key watch key at 60 degrees. Dade city at 63 degrees. Lakewood ranch, 63. Sarasota, venice, 68. Into southern sarasota, englewood, you are at 66 degrees and throughout the interior we have seen these temperatures now sitting in the mid60s with lakeland, bartow at 64 degrees. In wauchula you are currently sitting at 67. We had this warming trend over the past few days, and we are still continuing that running, we are slowing that down some. Extra cloud cover across the state and the cold fronted up to the north and west and this front will be working its way down the state as ge throughout day, and what it is going to do is bring just slightly cooler temperatures and tend to dry things out as we go throughout next day or so because we have seen that dew point creeping back up into the 60s. And dont have that nice refreshing feel to the air and through. Clear out the front somewhere somewhat, High Pressure builds back in and nice quiet weather with that lower humidity as we work our way into the first part of week and you see the next front headed our way toward the middle of next week and that one looks like it will bring us some rain.
