Our campaign was never about one person or even one election. It was love. And about building an america thats hopeful, inclusive and big hearted. We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought. But i still believe in america. And i always will. And if you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald trump is going to be our president. Chance to lead. Our constitution up democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power. And we dont just respect that, we cherish it. It also enshrines other things. The rule of law, the principle that we are all equal in rights and dignity. Freedom of worship and expression. We respect and cherish these values too. All right lets bring in fox 13 Political Editor craig patrick. What else struck you about clintons concession speech . Obviously struck me it took some time. She did not speak overnight or last night. And it was a little later than originally planned this morning. Part of that is because well, wednesday morning when you lose is a lonely place to be for any candidate. Let alone when youre running for president. On internal polling and most public polling that they had this race in the bag. You combine that with a candidate who surely went without maybe a lick of sleep overnight. They want to make sure she has her thoughts together and shes strikes the right tone. That will naturally take some time to figure out and with this, i think Hillary Clinton did a great deal of effort in trying to strike a tone of conciliation. She spoke of ranker and divide in this nation. And need for all americans to have ver respect and understand that we have a new president elect that is not Hillary Clinton and that it is donald trump. It also i suspect took some time for Clinton Campaign to acknowledge and accept the map here. In some places it was very close. Surprising to them good example of that would be state of pennsylvania. That has gone reliably democrat. Time and time again here Hillary Clinton loses by a mere 70,000 million, 4, 5 million, 5 and a half million cast. With this they wanted to make sure they are absolutely right on that. Chen you look other states wisconsin even closer. Here they are separated by less than 30,000 votes. Out of more than 2. 7 million votes cast. My goodness they want to make sure there are no anomalies here. That took some time. Why john came out and said please give them a little more time to take look. Then you have maybe the Biggest Surprise of all to clinton state of michigan. 16 electoral votes they thought they had it in bag perhaps in waning hours when they did stump there maybe took it for granted. Here you have look at this 2. 4 plus million votes cast separated by a mere 14,000 votes. Nearly all i think Clinton Campaign needed a little more time to let that sink in. And make sure that the math is what it showed. Liked. Maybe it took more tomb than Clinton Campaign may have liked. They wanted to make sure they got this right Hillary Clinton had clear head when she spoke at least as clear as it can given the loss she sustained and surprise she must be dealing with. Walk us through that and how you were able to reach that conclusion earlier than most. Comes down to matter of math. Its understanding florida. When you look at the map in florida, first off it looks strikingly similar to 2014 map in Gubernatorial Election between governor rick scott and Charlie Crist almost to the t. So what we found right around 10 00 p. M. That is there was one county that is was still out nearly all precincts reporting in Broward County. We thought maybe there was some votes here. Where Hillary Clinton could conceivably quite long shot. Catch up to donald trump. But at the point that she crossed threshold of nearly all votes in Broward County and shes trailing by 1. 4 percent. We knew that could tighten a little bit. Surely it would as more returns from southeast florida came in math wans there i look total number of votes that could go to Hillary Clinton at that point in night. If she got every single vote it was still out standing in that area. Well she was behind a that point by 138,000. And with that, the math just wasnt there for her. So as we said, in 2014, we called in first governor rick scott, it is close. But it is over. Once more when turn out was much higher the same effect it was carbon copy of 2014, just in higher numbers. It was in radar indeed close florida always is. 1. 29 percent in the end. But it was over nonetheless and no recount scenario at that point, because presuming every vote would go to Hillary Clinton, of course it wouldnt and it didnt, there still would not enough to bring it within one half of 1 percent. So at that point not necessarily going on limb looking numbers and math and number votes still out there what Hillary Clinton would need and just realizing her returns and her strong holds of orlando area and southeast florida just were not enough to deliver what she nice job. To acknowledge challenge that we face to ask all americans, those who did not support donald trump, he being one of them, the president , that they all get on the same page, rally behind though our differences are steep that in that sense we have short memory and resiliency time and time again. First 100 days of Trump Administration what can we expect . You look cabinet first off. Who will it be . Will there be a secretary of health and Human Services he has to get through the transition first from there i suspect there will be a focus on immigration reform. That will be a tall order. I think that with congress, that is, President Trump will also surely focus on trade. Matters of trade, trade deals, i think those will be his two key points. But keep in mind, we now know that merritt garland will not be appointed to u. S. Sproert court. President trump would have to justice scalia. With that that would tip the balance of power on sprourt Supreme Court for the duration of our lifetime. Thats very big decision he will be facing and surely something he will have to arrive at within first 100 days. We know you will have more font tonight a 5. It happened near Mount Vernon Elementary School 21 years chars walton hit and killed 72 year david roundtree. Walton charge with dui manslaughter and will make his first appearance in court this afternoon. Friends, family and School Children remember a man would worked to keep kids safe. Fox 13s Shayla Reeves spoke with those who knew him. Some described him a gentle giant with a smile they will not forgot. Grow for 72yearold daid roundtree a beloved crossing guard and member of suspect community. Right now youre look thing some of the flowers and candles and a cards, mementos left hinted by those who had a chance to meet and to know the crossing guard. He lost his life tuesday afternoon just before Mount Vernon Elementary School ended the day. Authorities say control and struck the crossing guard just before he began his afternoon shift. And today are not only family members remembering him but some of the students who saw him every day. Listen to this. He was always smiling. And he would always give us a hug or ooern just a high 5 and make us smile. I want to remember him as a good man, a good crossing guard for the kids. That was his life with the children out there. And everybody know it wave. Among messages left for mr. Roundtree, is this one left by unioning girl who stopped with her grandfather to the intersection of ninth avenue north and 45th street north where he worked every day to make sure kids were safe. In the message she says he was a great man with great by all. The special twinkle in his eyes was great. He will be very missed. More importantly a great man. He loved his kids, and we love him. But remember, eight years ago, president bush and i had but president bushs team could not have been more professional or more gracious in making sure we had a smooth transition so that we could hit the ground running. And one thing you realize quickly in this job is that the presidency and the vice presidency is bigger than any of us. I have instructed my team to follow the example that president bushs team set eight years ago and work as hard as we Successful Transition for the president elect. Because were now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country. The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy. And over the next few months we are going to show that to the world. I also had chance last night to speak with secretary clinton and i just had a chance to hear her remarks. I could n she has lived an extraordinary life of public service. She was a great first lady. She was an outstanding senator for state of new york. And she could not have been a better secretary of state. Im proud of her. Lot of americans look up to her. Her candidacy and nomination was historic and sends a message to our daughters all across the and im absolutely confident that she and president clinton will continue to do great work for people here in the United States and all around the world. Now everybody is sad when their side loses an election. But the day after we have to remember that were actually all on one team. This is an intermural scrimmage. Were not not republicans first. We are americans first. Were patriots first. We all want whats best for this country. Thats what i heard in mr. Trumps remarks last night. Thats what i heard when i spoke to him directly. And i was heartened by that. Thats what the country needs. Inclusion, a respect for our institutions, our way of life, rule of law, and a respect for each other. I hope that he maintains that spirit through the this transition. And i certainly hope thats how his presidency has chance to begin. I also told my team today to keep because the remarkable work that they have done day in day out, often without a lot of fan fare, often with lot of attention, work in agencies work in obscure areas of policy that make government run better and make it more responsive and make it actually helping more people, that remarkable work has left the next president with a stronger, better country than the one that existed eight years ago. So win or lose in this election, that was always our mission. That was our mission from day one. And everyone on my team should be extraordinarily proud of everything that they have done. And so should all to meet all across this country who do the hard work of building on that progress every single day. Teachers and schools, doctors and er clinics. Small businesses putting their all into starting something up, making sure they are treating their employees well. All the important work thats done by moms and dads and every state. The work of perfecting this union. So this was a long and hard fought campaign. A lot of our fellow americans are exalted today. Lot of americans are less so. But thats the nature of campaigns. Thats nature of democracy. It is hard. And sometimes contentious and noisy. Its not but to the young people who got into politics for the first time, and maybe disappointed by the results i just want you to know you have to stay encouraged. Dont get cynical. Dont ever think you cant make a difference. Right is worth it. Sometimes you lose an argument. Sometimes you lose an election. Now the path this country has taken has every ab straight line. We zig and zag and sometimes we move in ways that some people think is forward and others think is moving back. And ive lost elections before. Joe hasnt [ laughter ] but you know, so ive been you beat me badly. [ laughter ] but thats way politics works sometimes. We try really hard to persuade people that were right. And then people vote. Reflection, we lick our wounds. We brush ourselves off and we get back in arena away go at it. We try even harder the next time. The point though is we all go forward. With presumption of good faith in our fellow citizens. Because that presumption of good faith is essential to vibrant and functioning de moved forward for 240 years. How we pushed boundary and promoted freedom around the world. Thats how weve expanding rights of our founding to reach all of our citizens. Its how weve come this far. Thats why im confident that this incredible journey that were on as americans will go on. President is successful in that. Ive said before, i think of this job as being relay runner. You take the baton, you run your best race, and hopefully by time you hand it off youre a little further ahead. You made a little progress. And i can say that weve done that. Got this weak boundary, this little upper level low spinning out across the gulf of mexico. The southeast we go through next 24 hours. Not going to bring any changes, what it will help to really do is just kind of clear out the skies and maybe dry the atmosphere back out. So until we get back to mostly sunny skies and nice temperatures in nice weather as we go through the remainder of the work week. Watch it play out on future cast, because youve got rain across the gulf of mexico. Watch the front to our north, and that kind of works its way down to the south. So that dry air starts to build in.
