And 1241 and watch online with t the abc11 app. Barbara we will go to weather and traffic for the latest on schwenneker. Don that is great. In the past we couldnt offer that. Around here we have this nasty winter storm we are in the early stages of it. The winter storm warning is in effect until 6 00 tomorrow night. So that is 36 hours from now before it ends because the potential is there to see wintry weather today, tonight, into tomorrow. As far as radar we are seeing a break in some of the radar detection out to the south and west. Toward siler city, southern pines, at the moment you may see it lightning not lightning but the precipitation not as heavy. Then in fayetteville we have the mixed precipitation mainly rain but a little bit of sleet in northern Cumberland County. Durham to granville. Vance and person counties. This is tracking to the northnortheast. You will see that heavier band lifting toward henderson, louisburg and roxboro. That will work out of here the next couple hours. Right now temperatures in the 20s. We have gone down another degree. We are at 26. Sleet and freezing rain reported. By lunchtime 30 degrees and wintry mix and late day we see the wintry mix and 33 degrees. We will talk more about this potential for ice that has been increased and we have seen increases up to a quarter it a half inch that. Will be in the full team coverage. Now weather and traffic we go to amber rupinta. Amber the ice is the problem because a lot of people say i have fourwheel drive. You cant drive on ice. You saw the other day even the president s motorcade in d. C. When they had like an inch of ice they were sliding. Everybody that is warning that is the threat. That means power lines could come down and be careful walking on the ice. The e. R. s have enough emergency visits with people going to get something out of my front yard. Major injuries can occur. 40 and white oak and we are seeing white conditions as the snow is changing and sticking to surfaces and roads. That is how it looks at 40 and white oak. We have a second camera due Durham County. Boulevard. Obviously it is starting to stick there. Many roads have been pretreated, which is great but the d. O. T. Is asking everybody to stay off the roads. You see all the purple and white. That is snow and ice mix. As of now the carolina hushes game is on for 7 00. Canceled. Northbound rogers lane around the knightdale area. As uyou step out acceptedsend us pics. This is Gloria Rodriguez in breaking news one and conditions roxboro their dash board. John i have asked on my Facebook Page whether you have to go into work today or is there a delay, a lot of fox still have to a lot of folks still have to work. Barbara Anthony Wilson is in chapel hill on 15 501. Anthony right before you came to us this truck and another one were going very slowly down a ramp. From 15 501 to 54. Anthony we cannot see that because the truck is in front of us. He got out and made an adjustment possibly to his plow because of the snow. It is accumulating extremely fast. We will look at the video we shot earlier when it first began it fall. Now it is coming down so quickly that we are looking at potentially slippery conditions and that is the reason why these trucks have been waiting to deploy and they are indeed out here doing what they can to stay ahead of the accumulation. It is coming down thick, it is pretty, but it could be pretty dangerous. So, please bear in mind, we have been saying this all morning if you dont have to drive, folks like us and d. O. T. Guys and contractors working for them are out here because we have to be. If you have the option to stay home our advice is watch it on the guys in front of us, back live, they were checking something on their distribution there and it appears they are about to get rolling again. We will follow them for a few minutes because looking at this truck and conditions of the road in front of us will give you the best idea of what you are facing. I see the spreader is starting to crank up now and we are about to get rolling. He when you see the flashing lights thats the first sign if you are coming down the road that there are crews that are out here working and looks like hes rolling. We will give you appear idea of what hes looking at. You see the other truck in front of him. They are about to go on 54. This is a ramp going on to 54. Earlier we could see that the salt had taken effect on the street. But as you see. We get off the ramp which is now we are on 54. A big change. The salt has been taking effect, the road surface is village visible and they are putting on more salt to make sure the snow doesnt accumulate and become icy. They have already brine edd roads like this and it looks passable. But if you are out driving what may look like it is just wet could be icy. This that we are looking at is wet. But, depending on when or if you go out if you have any reason to go out, bear in mind that wet spots could be slick spots. Another reason we say please dont go out unless you have to. We are going on slush right now. Eventually there will be treatment of this area, this is 54, by those trucks. Thats what we can show you for now. To go to school so if you let them go outside bundle up. The reason im wearing this is to remind you even though we are in a warm vehicle, outside it is in the 30s and the kids could get out this and get into playing and not realize how cold it is. So, if you have kids and they are going outside make sure they are dressed warmly, have soup or oatmeal ready for them when they come in and adults who are driving take it easy and avoid the roads and let these guys do their job. We are on highway 54 in durham in breaking news one, Anthony Wilson, abc 11 eyewitness news. John lets move on. Caitlin knute is live in another one of our mobile news rooms an joins us from apex. What is going on this, caitlin . Bag so far. It started with sleet, turned to and then back to sleet so we are seeing a glaze on roads here. I will switch the camera so you can see what we are seeing. It may look faster than what we are going. We are only do about 35. This is on u. S. 64. The good news we have to report, i think people are listening to the warnings. If you travel this from apex to 40 to head toward raleigh or durham you know this is usually very busy this time of morning and very few people on the roads so far. We are grateful for that. Makes our job easier and the job of the d. O. T. Easier. Now this sis the camera from our roof a couple people behind us but this is nothing like you would normally see. A lot of people heeding the washing to not be on the road. What we are worried about is ice. That is the beg story everybody has big story everybody has been talking about and warning you about the dangers. A quarter inch to a half inch for the roads but power lines. From what we are seeing in the western part of wake county it seems like we are getting more ice than snow right now. It is not that much now but if it keeps up this pace im not sure. We were hoping for nice fat fluffy white flax. At one point we got out at a gas station and then 15 minutes it was harder crystals. That is what is on the road now. That the is why we are going slowly, 35 miles an hour in the zone where it is normally 55 to 60. We are not taking chances and we dont want you to take chances. D. O. T. Vehicles are out and they started two days ago. We knew the storm was coming so they could prepare. They had the fleet outputting the roads. Now at this point we know from checking in with d. O. T. This morning their plan of attack includes putting down a saltsand mixture and they get something they can plow they will do so. But right now theres not much to scrape. It is just the thin glaze. That is why we want people to stay off the roads if they k. We are watching it and we will let you know if the precipitation changes. If you look on the windshields again you can hear it, it sounds kind of like ice but goes back and forth between freezing rain and sleet. Hoping it with turn to great. Another look from the rearfacing camera others going slowly and we appreciate that. If you see anything out there hopefully from the safety of, say, the living room. Send us pictures and videos but dont get out in the car if it is dangerous. We dont want you out on the roads. Anthony was saying and we cant say it enough we are only doing i was telling my photographier my sisterinlaw who works with raleigh her boss was kind enough to say if you do not feel safe to come in dont. I warned my sisterinlaw i dont think we are going to be wrong about this storm. I said we are praying that we were not right that it wouldnt be this severe but it looks like we are in for the long haul so hopefully you have bosses that are understanding like she did and can stay home this will passes. If you see troubled spots and know of anything we need to know let us know. We are going to get on the ramp and head toward 40 and check things there. But look at this traffic, not fp much to speak of. Amber watching traffic and as i pass it back to you, if you could ask don what it looks like in Johnston County one viewer Maggie Sanders asked me on facebook what it looks like there. We have not ventured that far east. Know what driving conditions are there. John caitlin, don is listening and he will have an update. Don we will call up our radar picture for the director back there. If you want to go to weather 3, Johnston County is in a very light pocket right now. You have had light rain and snowflakes and sleet. We can adjust the radar picture. I will switch the radar mode a little bit. Let me call it up. It takes a moment. We will lighten some of this back. Some of this is not hitting the ground with the low humidity. Right now southeast of clayton is the best chance of anything falling. It is not heavy. We have had reports in the goldsboro area i know that is not Johnston County but freezing rain reported about 6 30 and they are seeing overpasses glaze. County and wayne county both. Wake county we have a mixture of sleet and snow and sleet in apex. There you go, caitlyn as we check on Johnston County. Now back to john and barbara. Barbara we have a program note. We said if you want to watch Good Morning America you could on another channel. But there was an issue with one of the channels. John i dont know if we can put it on the screen now but 1240 and 1241. One is h. D. So, 1240 and 1241. It may be listed on the grid as Living Well Network but we are running Good Morning America. Barbara you can watch it on 11 11. 2. Or stick with us. It is 7 15 and 27 degrees. For some of you this is not the first snow of the year. John the folks in the northern we will check back with our california transplant Gloria Rodriguez. Gloria it is not the first snow of the year but it is my first snowstorm. Im having a good time looking now, but it can get messy on the roads so we have to be very careful. I want to show you the roof camera. We are in roxboro on madison boulevard boulevard. You can see the vehicle behind us. Everybody is going slow, which is what you want to do. Sometimes the camera that we have here seems like we are going faster than we are. But the photographer is only going about 30 miles an hour right now. So we are going very slow as is the vehicle behind us. Now you will show you the vehicle in front of us. You can see some kind of issue with the vehicle. We are looking at any accidents. Luckily we have not come across any accidents. As you see, that truck in front it slow, which is what you want to do. You can see some snow compiling on the roads but d. O. T. Did a great job treating the roads with the brine so we are not seeing too many issues right now. Hopeful that i will continue. Roxboro, we are told, could get between six to eight inches of snow, could be more. We are watching the roads. As it gets later in the morning we are see more cars because again we are urging people to stay home if you can but the reality is a lot of people do have to work. So, if you are hitting the roads make sure you keep it extra slow and keep enough distance between your vehicle and one in front in case you need to stop quickly you have extra space and you can see a couple of vehicles on the road but nothing the way it usually is on madison boulevard. This is one of the busiest now is a hit quieter and, of course, kids home because schools canceled. We will bring you the hittest and let you know what is going on. There is enough snow to make snowballs so maybe kids will enjoy that. But stay off the roads if you dont have to be out there. We are here so you dont have to be out here. Now back to you in the studio. Barbara as some people said on facebook they have to get out. John the sand hills were added to the winter storm warning overnight. Barbara nicole carr is there. Are you still seeing rain . Nicole no, it is high and dry. We are fine right now. Earlier this morning we had rain when we came in. And 5 00. This is iced over. That is what has happened to what did fall overnight. For that reason we have folks who are just making sure that whatever falls windshield wipers dont get stuck. We have been on again and off again with the rain. But we love twitter. Casey out fof st. Paul says we have been having steady freezing rain and sleet in robco. Robinson county seeing it, moore county. All around us we have seen that. And what has fallen here is frozen over in the flower pots. So we are on again and off again. But business as usual around the Metro Fayetteville area. Just watching for that under a enjoying the day off. All the schools around here and fort bragg closed with a couple of delays to the p. X. And groceries or things for the house. We will keep an eye on it and see what happens in the next hfr hour. Half hour. Barbara thank you. John we will turn to meteorologist Don Schwenneker and meteorologist Steve Stewart. I dont like the fact you updated the ice totals. Don it looks like a little more possibly in moore county. I get that if you are at a job where you have to work and you are going to head out, remember why dont you head to work earlier. Give yourself an extra hour or two. It would be better to get this and wait. And, two, dont go over 20 miles an hour if you can. And fourwheel drive doesnt mean fourwheel stop. Just because you can get it and go fast it doesnt mean it will slow down easily. Those three things to remember if you have to go out of we will talk about that winter storm the viewing area running until 6 00 tomorrow night. We have about 35 hours left of the winter storm warning and Winter Weather advisory. Lets talk about the impact around the region. The pink area greatest impact is tree damage and possible Power Outages and prolonged travel impact. Through wake county in the middle of the viewing area we have a transition zone where you see snow, sleet, freezing rain changing it rain. It will worsen north and west and way south and east in sampson or nash county, least impact but you may see icy roads and trees come down with high wind. Lets go to fayetteville where nicole car wasr and not seeing anything in the way of precipitation right now. That is because my radar is going crazy. But in that area in fayetteville we have dry spots in northern Cumberland County and up into portions of harnett county. We go from there to heavy snow in person, granville and western warren and wake county you have a few dry spots working through. We will zoom down into that area and that purple area means you may see snow with sleet or freezing rain. Raleigh there the lens freezing over. 27, dew point 21. That is still as the moisture falls through we have ivana rative sa school evaporative cooling and you see the temperature go down a little bit more. Live look at a very wet r. D. U. , 26, southeast wind gusting up to we could see gusts today up to 35 miles an hour. From there to a live look into durham on an iced over lens, 25, 76 humidity. East wind nine. Fayetteville dry at the moment but you will see more working through the next several hours. 29, northeast wind at 11. North hills not much on the camera, 26, east wind five miles an hour. Checking the ground temperatures, anywhere from 36 to 38 degrees at the moment. That is good news. That along with the salt should keep the roads relatively clear for a while. As that builds up on the road we will see the ground temperatures drop. We will talk more about the air temperature and what we are seeing as far as Severe Weather possibilities. For that we go to Steve Stewart. Steve the rainsnow line is the key factor and that could be across a highly populated area. Basically we are talking between sleet and snow. Around r. D. U. The amounts will be less because sleet will stack differently than snow. Instead of three to six we are talking more one to three. I dont think that will be much impact the start north. I think it will be more snow in Person County. How much freezing rain is a big question mark. We would like to see more sleet but if we have freezing rain we will be dealing with phourpblgs because the wind will be a factor. A lot fof times bust potential is high. We are talking about warm air aloft. Not so much at the surface. We could stay below freezing is he surface. It is what is happening above our heads. We call this the warm nose and we will see a change in the precipitation. If it is all cold back here, all snow pretty easy to forecast. When we have the mid level to be warm per se, just above 32 the snow melts and rain and it has time to refreeze into sleet. This is the least impact considering the worst is freezing rain. That is when it is so shallow the, raindrop doesnt have time to refreeze and hits the grounded a liquid. It hits the branches, power lines, car and it will ice over. That is the major problem. We would rather it be more sleet event. So we will go back and forth between these from the triangle south. Farther north better chance of mainly snow event. If we talk about the amounts of snow at r. D. U. , likely we feel more confident it will be in the one to three tkarbinch range. Once we get hare higher amounts it is different because of how the sleet stacks up. Likely there is already dropping. A huge s srm. If you look at it from space stretching from south of florida up to the great lakes and in that we are seek that we are seeing plenty of apprentice tags. If you have travel plans today pack your patience. Most of the major hubs at this hour not showing weather delays but that will change the next 12 hours as this lifts north into some major hubs. So, north of fayetteville mainly snow. There is the low pressure that will spawn a surface low along the coast laureate on today keeping us in that went precipitation that winter apprentice attention. We have the warnings up to d. C. Up to long island where we we are talking potential gusts of 50 to 60 up there. Here is the low transferring the energy to the coast. This is the low that is really going to intensify as it moves along the coast. The question is how much wraparound snow we get. Typically we do not see much of it here. I think there will be some light snow on the back side. The predict perspective shows that now. Here is the sleet and freezing rain and all snow to the north. Even later in the afternoon by 3 30 we are seeing sleet make it all the way up to Person County. And down east this is all rain. We are talking surface category. Then another issue is the wind. If we get gusts this high Power Outages are looking more likely. Don unfortunately we could see wind gusts as high as 35 miles an hour this afternoon. Will cause problems. We will see the forecast and wintry mix continuing and high temperatures topping out in the mid 30s. Potential and snowfall totals our crews are on the roads as the storm ramps up. It is 7 30 and 27 degrees. John d. O. T. Has been gearing up for the worst of it their trucks loaded with salt and plows ready it hit the ground. Welcome on friday january 22, 7 31 and we are preempting Good Morning America it bring you special coverage of weather. Barbara we go to Don Schwenneker in the First Alert Storm Center because away know the ice chances have been increased. Don unfortunately we have had to bump up the amount of Ice Accumulation possibility more especially to the south and west west. This is the latest forecast from the Weather Center the toward moore cut the moore county the potential is a half inch or more. It is this area im worried about. Once you see a half inch of ice that is when you could see power lines coming into play and you this high wind gusts and we see the quarter inch to the half inch in the triangle. We will show you what we are talking about. You see that quarter inch to half inch up through i85 corridor and extending that potential for more ice. Unfortunately that is up into Warren County and vance county. We will have to watch that. As far as the snowfall totals we have adjusted this a little bit, too. We have not made big adjustments. Again more warm air means more rain, less snow. More cold air means bigger snowfall totals. Roxboro and northern Person County and triad could see over 10 inches in spots. We will continue to see that working through as we head through the day. I think the day ahead is a lot of the same thing. There will be times you look out and nothing is happening and you will say organizations oh, it is done. By late day 33 with wintry mix. We will talk about the roads and problems we are seeing with amber rupinta. Amber thankfully the problems are minimal at this hour because so many people are heeding the warnings and staying off the road. We were on the air at 4 00 and it was very quiet and places very dry. But very different now. You can see all of this white and pink. That is the ice and snow mixture that is blanketing north carolina. I was just reading an article from abc news, 75 Million People from arkansas to new york are going to be impacted by this storm. Thats a lot of people. Those people driving sometimes it is not you but the other person you have to deal with. That is why they are saying stay off the roads. Want to do a round robin of d. O. T. Cameras because we have switched to snow in many areas. This is 40 and i believe lake like wheeler that is lake wheeler. There are a number of cars. John clark asked if you have to go to work and a lot of people do are to work. It will be a tough ride home because this will continue. Durham freeway and you see where it was definitely pretreated with the brine solution because it melts but there is snow sticking and our parking lot is covered. There are a couple of accidents coming with at 7 34. 495 eastbound near exit 420 the right lane blocked due to an accident and zooming in closer into southern wake county Holly Springs area, a stalled vehicle on n. C. 55 bypass and old smithfield road. We will go to some social pictures. This is the quickest way to connect with us. It is a great way for us to see use the hash tag abc11 eyewitness. This is running out of potty spots by the minute as the snow is coming down. I think that is raleigh. A lot of team, people in front of the camera, so many working behind the camera. This is one of them. Laurie was tweeting walking to the office and this is what i see. You see a lot of snow there. Is that durham or raleigh . It is hard for me to tell. Durham. This is butner, north carolina, snow coming down from a witness. And this is west raleigh a neighborhood. These conditions are changing quickly. Laurie, was that durham or raleigh . Durham. If you need to keep track from this standpoint we are tracking it all and we will keep you connected so stay with us. Well be here all day. Barbara thank you, amber. Breaking news one on rock quarry road. Caitlin glaze is what we are seeing. It appears to be sleeting right now and again back and forth between sleet and freezing rain, then snow and sleet. We are going pretty slowly. We have been watching our speed and slowing down as we approach intersections because it appears to be slick. When you have a chance pass along to amber, we have been cruising around wake county and going by downtown on 40 and an entrance hatch i believe hammond a car has stalled out, had the flashers on right there blocking that ramp as we passed by. If she can watch that, that could be a problem spt. We have not seen the volume on the roads that we normally do this time of morning. That is fantastic. That is excellent. We have been warning people it we want them to do so. Just because conditions are constantly changing. The direction we are head something walnut creak amphitheatre because this is the staging area of duke energy so the biggest concern with the storm is ice. You are watching us right now pulling into the parking lot to see if we see vehicles. We knew they were bringing in crews to be at standby. We we hear water talks talking about a quarter inch to a half inch ice that is enough to down power lines. So were pulling into the parking lot. Can you see the trucks just persist here . There are a just past here . There a ton. We can show you how many vehicles they have here justine if that is doable. We want to turn this so show people all of the vehicles that they have standing by and all the crews they have ready it respond to outages. If you lose power you could be this may not be a quick fix unfortunately unfortunately we have to move along but we will get pictures on twitter and facebook to show you and bring you an update in a little bit. Now back to you. Caitlin knute, abc 11 eyewitness news. John lets move now to the Highway Patrol. Joining us on the telephone is lieutenant jeff gordon who drove in i understand from Johnston County into raleigh. What are you seeing out there, lieutenant gordon . I came out probably around 5 00 and, as you stated the roads that i was traveling on at the time were not that bad. However, that has changed in the last couple of hours. Our troopers have been pretty fortunate since midnight only investigating five collisions in the greater triangle area. But we did anticipate that number to start to increase as people get out and start to travel travel. Just as you were telling viewers today to not travel, then by all means dont. It appears from what i have been given is a lot of people are heeding the warning. But the roadways with this type of precipitation with sleet, freezing rain, snow, will cause issues on the roads and particularly the overpasses and intersections. So people need to be cautious when they get out as well. Another thing we need to keep in mind is d. O. T. Is working as diligently as they can to keep these roads clear and sometimes the motoring public impedes. So be wary of those guys and girls who are out there trying to clear the roads. Barbara you know as well as i do some have to get out and they get stuck and they just need know if they need it abandon a vehicle or have some problems on the roads. If you are going to be traveling take a cell phone. Pretty much nowadays everyone has one. That is the number one thing. So if you get in a situation that you need assistance then call the Highway Patrol and other Law Enforcement agencies, National Guard and other agencies. We will be checking on stranded motorists, abandoned vehicles and so forth to ensure nobody is left in those vehicles. We have the quick clearance law that was enacted that was put into miss yesterday with the d. O. T. Where vehicles will be removed from the shoulder of the road if they are causing a hazard. That is for the safety of the mortgaging public and the motoring public and d. O. T. Works. We dont want to leave anybody behind. If you are in a situation pick up the phone and call star h. P. And we will try get somebody to but be cautious today. If you dont have to go out, get a cup of coffee and watch it on the news. Barbara that is what im talking about. John lieutenant gordon, if your vehicle is towed how do you know who towed it and where it went . If it is towed in city limits you need to contact your Law Enforcement agency, Police Department in the city limits. If it is outside the city limits the Highway Patrols that a website on the nc website and they can phaeubgmake barbara that is ncdps. Gov. John he said only five collisions since midnight in the greater triangle area that. Is good. We go to Anthony Wilson in breaking news one. We now have freezing rain. I will be quiet for a second. You can probably hear that falling outside break break. Here is our view as we travel along the high. We have freezing rain. What you are looking at in front of us used to be snow. We have seen some salt trucks passing through, some with the plows in front as they are trying to melt the snow before it got too much on the ground. And with the conditions weve now since it is cold it is potentially icy. We are not having any problems at the moment going through there portion of chapel hill. That said, we were told by someone on my facebook that there was a slippery situation on 86 near the Police Department in chapel hill. It out to milwaukee sure things are all right. To make sure things are all right. Im on twitter at anthony abc11 and facebook at Anthony Wilson wtvd. We have been giving you some behind the scenes video and answering questions and thats a good time to let us know what conditions are like where you are. That said we see flashing blue lets ahead of us. I will see if we can show what you is going on. It is on the lefthand side of the road. Looks like a spinout in the median. This is an example of what can happen. We have been telling you because conditions are changing so quickly and we now have wet potentially icy conditions here, this is what can happen. We dont know if anybody is injured but you see that car right there had a problem. Looks like the Highway Patrolman we will give you a closer look. We will stay inside breaking news one because there is still traffic going back and forth. But look at that. I think that is a prius. I dont know if the driver is still in the car but you see the state trooper with the lights on making sure no one else has a problem. It appears to me like it may have spun out on this side and wound up over there on the median stopped by the cables there. Once again, the picture tells you everything. It is worth more than a thousand words. I dont know what the situation was but that person could have been traveling along this road and all of a sudden thats what happens and you see the result. A word to the wise, we will try to show you hopefully some more pleasant things than that. We hope no one was hurt but it happened when conditions go south. We have freezing rain on top of the slush and when they put the salt down the conditions on the ground get a little iffy until they clear it with the plow. They are trying to get to this today. It will take a while because theres a lot of road and limited number of kraus. Crews. We have been following trucks and we will so you what is happening. Meantime, keep that image of that car that spun out in mind. It can get dangerous and we dont want to talk about you on the news. Live in chapel hill. Anthony wilson, abc 11 eyewitness news. Barbara lets go to downtown raleigh now and anna laurel is giving as you look there. Good morning. Anna [no response can you hear me . Anna it is nasty out here. I was trying to i was wind chill factor i could tell you what a wind wonderland but ice pellets are bouncing around. It is disgusting. Thankfully aware not seeing a lot of traffic downtown. This time of morning it is busy. The city of raleigh technically never they said if you can work from home please do so. They are trying to keep people off the roads. We just saw a sky crew drive through city crew. I just talked with chris mcgee. He is over the City Operations today so clearing the streets, keeping you safe if you have to get out. He said there are 80 crews working from 6 00 a. M. To 6 00 p. M. Then the next crew is 6 00 p. M. To 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow. About 26 trucks are out there now. They are starting to put out the salt and sand mixture. Check out a little bit. You can see this is what is accumulating on the roads. It is nasty, slushy right now. We are expecting there again to turn into just an ilesy mess out here. We have not seen people yet throwing fresh salt on the sidewalks and a guy just walked by and said he slipped down here. So, it is slick and that is can i and icy. Bus service is running still. The regular bus routes are running. I just got off the phone with my brother around he has to go to work in about an hour. People still have to go to work. So maybe the bus is a good alternate. If you are home and hoping the trash would get your stuff today, it is suspended. If today is your day they will glenwood and wade and capital are state roads and so they are cleaning those up except inside the beltline. The city of raleigh they know the state is busy with the 440, 540. So once those big roads are inside the beltline that is when they start cleaning them up. The city takes over and helps with that. Right now chris mcgee said the one trouble spot hes heard about is going to be inbound wade avenue. They were dispatching crews and getting reports of a slick spofrplt if you are coming from cary into downtown, inside the beltline, right there at wade avenue slick spots. We encourage you to be safe. It is not fun to be out in this. It is nasty. This is not we you want to theres no reason to be out. If you have to be out, be safe and accepted us pictures if you you are at home. Maybe that will be look better than downtown. I will throw it back to you because it is getting cold feel john we understand. Anna laurel in downtown raleigh. Barbara a lot of people had Flights Canceled but some dont. We go live to r. D. U. On the phone with Andrew Sawyer. How is it there . Good morning. Well. Our run whichways are wet. We have planes taking off and landing with no issues. John tell us about the Flights Canceled in and out of r. Tkfpltd. U. Dont list them but how many are we talking about. If i listed them it would probably be to the noon forecast. We have over 200 cancellationless. A vast majority. We have a few flights from antithat are allegiant. Dont want to say much other than have passengers contact the airlines to doublecheck flight status before coming out. If your flight is scheduled and you are trying to come out drive carefully. That is one of our big messages today. Barbara something unusual happened the last couple of days in advance of this storm. The Airlines Offering vouchers for people to change flights earlier or later or later at a better time to travel, right . Thats something we have been seeing the past few years ahead of major weather events and we have seen it with hurricanes they will relax their policies on changing tickets to make it easier to rebook the flight, whether it is out of r. D. U. Or you are affected by another airport. We encourage passengers to check with airlines and most of the times they are on the website the policies. That is a great way it raceway book and not rebook the flight. John that is Andrew Sawyer from from the airport. Barbara lets go to meteorologist Don Schwenneker. Looks like we will have the potential for more ice than we had initially thought we would, right . Don we will continue to see more ice southwest of the triangle. We have the winter storm warning for another 34 hours for most of the viewing area. This is tonight in tomorrow and the potential is there for off and on precipitation. If you are watching in northern harnett cut you are going hey, where did it go in it stopped. We will see breaks in this. There will be times we wont see anything then you will see bursts come back and put down a quick coating. On the radar if we go in the pink which is freezing rain or rain mixing, purpose sexual freezing rain it sleet and blue and white is snow and look at vance county, all three colors so you can have anything there. Maybe liquid rain there. We will go to the sand hills. Same thing, breaks in the action. Southern Johnston County. Southern wake county in a dry slot and it stopped and it will stop then bursts will come back. Away tkpw we go to we go to wake county and right now the biggest threat of heavier precipitation is toward wake forest and northern part of wake county and light precipitation there. This is normally a live look into downtown raleigh but cant see it because the ice has lensed over. We are 27 and dewpoint 21, 80 humidity. When we see that dew point the air is more moist and we will see the change over to tpraeupgs. That is the live picture we we were talking to the gentleman at r. D. we have gusts up to 20 to 25 and the potential is to 35. You can see the frozen precipitation on the camera. 25 there. Fayetteville even though theres not much happening at the surface this is on top of the Hardware Store 50 to 60 feet up and icing is occurring there. North hills the camera is clear there, 26 degrees right now in the north hills area. Lets talk more about what we are seeing as far as precipitation and what can be heading our way with Steve Stewart. Steve one of the main challenges with this will be snow versus sleet. We are seeing a lot of that change over. Again you take that with a grain of salt but up to the virginia border we are seeing signs of getting sleet. If we have more sleet than snow the amounts of snow in the forecast will be way off. Where is that rainsnow line and how often will it jog up and down. If it is over our area across wake county that makes the numbers very challenging. The amount of freezing rain. Theres a challenge between freezing ran and sleet so theres the bust pension as far as amounts. Not as far as whether it will happen but the amounts and types. If the entire column is at or below 32 it is all snow. But what we are seeing ahrofrlt. All surface temperatures are below freezing. So were all frozen in some form. But when you go up into the atmosphere around 5,000 to 7,000 feet we are seeing above 32. It takes for for to melt into rain and then if it has time it will refreeze. That is better than freezing rain. What happened with freezing rain the warm layer is closer to the surface so it melts and when it hits the cold layer again it doesnt have time to freeze into a sleet pellet so it gets to the surface as liquid. Then some say it instantly freezes. Typically thats in the the case but it freezes. The ground is cold and things it hits are below freezing so it will ice up. This is what we dont want to see. The question is will we be shifting between the two and if that is the case our snow total forecast, the confidence is very high on the lower end of one to three. We are talking r. D. U. , not north. North you will be more than that. Lets say r. D. U. One to three. To get higher amounts of going down drastically because of this shift to more sleet and potential for freezing rain. One of the issues is our ground temperatures, i updated, were coming down by a couple of degrees. Again, that pellet hitting the ground is getting colder with the very large storm system stretching from the great lakes down to florida right now and it marches up the east coast quite a bit of precipitation, the northern is frozen, southern is rain and thunderstorms and Severe Weather with even tornadoes reported this morning in parts of florida. It was all snow but you see the color changes don was showing you. That is the computer suggesting we are seeing some phase shifting and warmer air aloft nosing in allowing for precipitation to change. But notice the feeder bands off the coast continues to pump in moisture. When that develops winds will turn more from the southeast and winter storm warnings and look at the blizzard warnings to the north. The rain r main the main reason for that we will be dealing with strong winds, gusts to 50 or 60 miles an hour. We talked to the airport and ao lot of cancellations. But most airports not showing anything. That will change quickly as the day goes on. First alert predictor forecast model has the transition to sleet and freezing rain. Snow continues in the Northern Counties then a swath of us albeit light precipitation will be in the freezing rain or she had r sleet. East of 95 could be all rain overnight and that will help things out. Then a break overnight into tomorrow but notice tomorrow on the back side we would have cold air and winds from the north and west and potential for snow. Maybe an inch or two inches and thats about it. The majority of this is today. Don the rest of this afternoon we will have to wait the. We will do the Snowfall Forecast and how much ice and i have had panthers game barbara a powerful winter storm we are here with extended coverage. 8 00 right now. John our mobile units are on the road. We are looking at what conditions are like. We are watching snow as it sticks to the ground. The chance for ice is increasing. Barbara crews are out treating the roads. All of the officials are saying that if you do not have to get out, stay on the roads stay off the roads. Let those people do their jobs. John welcome on this friday. 27 degrees. Barbara thank you for being with us. A state of emergency issued for the entire state. As you know by now, in our viewing area is closed today. John officials are urging people to stay home if they can. We are preempting Good Morning America in order to keep you uptodate on this potentially dangerous weather situation. We are gma available for those who might want to see it here it Time Warner Cable customers can find it on channel table channel 1240 and 1241. Barbour we want to show you everything around the area. As go to Don Schwenneker starting with the forecast. Don good morning. Ice forecast. We have the potential for eyes. Youll see the darker area on the lefthand side. We have more in the counties and points is get towards charlotte. They could get up to one half of an inch or more. You will notice the quarter inch works its way up all the way around wake county. Now, as we get more sleet and snow it will knock it down. That is what we are hoping for because the passage of ice is when youll start to see major Snowfall Forecast. Fayetteville. We could see the potential for Durham County. Tomorrow afternoon. Look at the forecast for the rest of today. Those temperatures hovering about where they are. They will pick up this afternoon. Climbing into the low 30s. They will hit 31 and roxboro. Snow and a wintry mix possible all day long. This afternoon well get more freezing rain south and east of i95. I have had this question 100 times. What does it look like for the panthers . Cardinals, panthers, bank of america stadium. We will see a kick off temperatures around 30 degrees. It will be in the 40s most of the day on charlotte. Off across the region. Then come as a go towards the fourth quarter, heavy jackets will be needed as temperatures night. It could be potentially very lower 20s. Winter storm warning in effect wind chill weathered visor he south and east of i95. We will check radar and a live look. We go through wake county. That goes down to northern harding county. We will see this through the day or pockets of showers worked through and we see a break. That will continue off and on all day long. We not have much going on. It could change quickly. That is why the winter storm warning is in effect. Will check on the roads right now. For that come we go to amber. Amber it has gotten very busy since last time. We have been on the air since 4 00. I will tell you what. What a difference the next few hours makes. Nice and dry. We have a lot of snow in some spots. Here are conditions. We do have several accidents to get through. You can see it sticking through as we have been telling you, this is going to be a storm that will really stick around for a long time. Again. Obviously i think the big problem is that nobody can drive on ice. Even if you have a fourwheel drive, you cannot drive on ice. Is when accident start to pick up. Morning. Be careful of your walking anywhere, because we do get a big uptick with icy conditions. 448 u. S. 64 we have some rain. We are seeing snow especially in durham in durham and pearson county getting a lot of snow coverage. I will get to the accidents one at new bern avenue. Lake waters drive at trailer road. The shoulder is blocked very slow. It is 95 northbound. 95 is such a major artery at exit 87. That is where the accident is. Also very slow with an accident at u. S. 70 south congress weve been tracking this one for 95 near exit for 20 due to next in there. Seal the pink and white . That is the pink and white or we have the snow. Well be tracking conditions changing very rapidly this morning. Well keep you up to date. John thank you. Well continue our Live Team Coverage now. We are joined live now from the Emergency Operations center in raleigh. Im sure that is a beehive of activity. It is. We do not know for sure when we will hear from the governor. We are confident we will hear from him. He said yesterday that he will be back again today and likely on saturday. We have not received an official word on when that will be. We will have a news conference. Well bring that to you live later this morning. Again, we are here at the Emergency Operations center. West raleigh. If you know early state art road from that. The Emergency Operations center is in the basement of this building. That is where they not only to all of their work, but they hold news conferences. We are seeing the highway coordinating her all agencies dealing with this are correlating. They have insisted that they were prepared. By the way, i live not too far from here. I only had to drive a mile and a half to two hours to get here. We have a clearing. This is one thing we talk about the roads. People remember hospitals are often flooding. We have people with broken bones and head injuries just from slipping. What we can see is out here on the roads. There are somewhat spots. There are some spots very icy. In my neighborhood, i went out at 4 45 this morning. I was concerned because we had a rain. We can see both hitting the car. It concerned me greatly. At one point, it turns to pretty good sized snowflakes. What you will find on the roads in this section of the triangle is that underneath whatever is on top is going to be likely and icy layer. A mixture of sleet and freezing rain. We have better traction, if you have a dire emergency. What i did in my neighborhood is that as soon as i pulled out of my driveway, i accelerated really hard, i have new tires on my car, of a car with allwheel drive, all the tires spun. I also grew up in an area that had a fair amount of whether Winter Weather. I am accustomed to this. I could tell you that when you feel the slipping under there, i do not care how good of a driver you are, i dont care how much kinds of conditions. People who do that know that as amber said, fourwheel drive will not help you driver well. Many of the people in this got a coating of ice with whatever is on top or so, you need to be extremely careful. Slippery. My next test got up to 20 Miles Per Hour. It was still before daylight. I hit the brakes as hard as i could, my car slid. I was only going 20 Miles Per Hour. I was told that even if youre going 40 Miles Per Hour. Youre probably not be able to control your car. You will likely get some slipping and sliding. So, i think we are already at that stage. We are in a emergency only travel. I would imagine most work paces a Specialist School being close that most places have their workers not come in. If anybody is on the way in, hopefully the boss will figure out this is probably not a good day for that. Hopefully with all of the telecommuting that people can do, they can get a lot of work done from home. John and barbara, the one thing i have to say is that i do not mind anything we have seen. Only if the freezing rain will stop. We can miss one day of work. We can miss one day of school. We have the weekend to take it we do not need to go out. If we have to deal with the storm with no power, it will be painful. We will be watching the forecast closely. Our Meteorology Team is second to none. I trust them immensely. We will be watching it closely. My guess is that it just depends on where you live as to what you will end up with. The more freezing rain we get, we have the absolute on the we have the power on the trees. We will not the mower. We had the power line, that is where the transformer start to go. Keep your fingers crossed. I hope you have, if you have potentially natural gas and water heaters in your house a natural gas grill or an lp grill. You might be ok at least a little bit of the power goes out. Other than that, the power being out is going to be a nightmare john a barber, i will stand out here across my fingers and hope that this does not slow a wrench like that. We will see what happens during the day. So far so good. John thank you. If you have been through it, it is miserable. Barbara just to react to that. Nobody wants that ice. Diane wilson is live for us from Durham County. Diane, that does not look like a pretty picture. Diane good morning. If im on, hopefully you guys can see what is going on. We are on the durham freeway. We are heading towards a right now. As you can see, the windchill is with sleet and freezing rain. This is what is very difficult. It is definitely not that busy. This is the stuff when you get outside. As we are heading out here on 147. Im surprised how many people are out on the roads. Considering the conditions and how it will only get worse. This morning, i came prepared. Our neighborhood roads werent huge device. I was i got on the tollway in then went into durham, we had a wintry mix. Wherein rolle trying to see the big conditions in the overpass. Those are the freeze first. That is where you need to exercise extreme caution. The good news is that we have not seen many crazy drivers. Some are little impatient and try to go faster than others. We are going 35 Miles Per Hour right now. The windshield wipers are going. The freezing rain with ice coming. Definitely use caution. You want to have their room and the distance between so that you brakes and run into the car. That is what we are doing 147. Up to the fire. Enjoy the warmth if you can do that. It is not fun to be out there. Barbara thank you. John lets continue. Lets talk about the situation in durham. Out of the Durham County sheriffs office, can you hear me . Tell us what the situation is like in the county. That is what we think you gift take your time. John any wrecks since midnight . We are crossing our fingers. Barbara you have any extra staffing for commuters in the area . We have increased our staffing by 100 . Barbara we hope you stay safe. John 8 15. 27 degrees. We will get an update on our don good morning. Thank you for staying with us on this friday. Buts talk about the latest on this winter storm warning. Youll notice the western two thirds of the state although it to charlotte and boone, all the way up, have a Winter Weather advisory the east. Those because we will see less and the potential vice and rainfall. That is as you get out around the coast. We have a live look at first alert doppler. With pockets of light precipitation working through rain. We can see is that we have freezing rain mixing in. When you get up into sanford county and southern pines, we see freezing rain changeover to sleep possibly. We go north toward the blue and white is. We starting to see some and south rosemary. That is on down toward spring hope. Will slide down into wake county. Wake forest, you will notice we still have like precipitation. On the eastern side of the county, it is actually shut off. We will see times today when youre not seeing anything. We was a big burst of Winter Weather. We will continue to go through the morning. 26 degrees. The dew point has gone up another degree. It really tells us the air is 84 humidity. East wind gusting into the upper teens. Later on today. Lets go to Steve Stewart. Steve the biggest challenge is the sleet versus the snow. That will change our numbers as the totals for snow. We wonder how far north it will creep. How much freezing rain are going to get. The impacts will be significant because if we have freezing rain , will get some Power Outages. We have the phase shifting going on. We will explain through the surface we have several thousand feet. We have freezing rain with snow. It will move in the midlevels of the atmosphere. If it has time, it will refreeze. The warm layer closer to the surface. The raindrops do not have time to refreeze. They make it to the ground in liquid form. Whatever they hit, they will eventually freeze. They have the overpasses, the branches, the power lines, that will hold a lot of weight. It will increase the weight by 30 times. When you factor wind income of branches will snap easily. Again, this is for the triangle. It is pretty high. Our confidence goes down quickly. Snow will be higher. Sleet does not. The equipment precipitation here will be around two inches. Regardless, this is a mess of a again, it is not going to be hard to get the roadways covered. We have snow for that matter. It does not take long for that matter. It is a huge storm. The northern fringe is pushing up to the great lakes. South of texas as well. We can see on the radar here. To the south, we have the transfer of energy to the coastal lows. It will ramp up over the next 24 hours. We have blowing snow with a major issue. This will keep sneaking the moisture in. We might have brakes. The winter storm warning look from d. C. To new york were the blizzard warning is in effect. Gus could be as high 60 Miles Per Hour. As a go through the next few hours, that will continue. All the way into 5 00, were still dealing with sleep. We have a rain event. It will help things out. We have rain and temperatures. That means surface temperatures should go above freezing. In the overnight hours, a nice low in the activity. We are on the backside. It is off to the north and east. Whatever moisture is left will all be snow. The question is how much. Maybe an inch. Maybe upwards of two in the northern county. The wind is a bigger issue. If we have gus like this, i think it is a little overdone. More towards 25 to 30. Gus like this with the ice on Power Outages. The model depicts that. We have some ice accretion and when gus. It is suggesting that we are chances of Power Outages along the coast. For us, we are mainly in the low category. We have this category here to see the median category for potential Power Outages. When you go north, look at this. It is a good conclusion that we will be seeing major Power Outages. That is through metropolitan cities. What a mess. John how are outages of their can impact other parts of the country. Especially for all the air travel going to the region. Buts talk about our friday storm risk. We have heavy storm potentials. Medium to a high risk. Especially through the virginia border. When it hits, it could turn very quickly. We will have Power Outages. Where Power Outages on this point. I do not know if it will be widespread, we have the potential to see some. The best chance for will be to the south and west. A half inches the magic number. We will really start to see Power Outages. I hope the forecast is not correct. We have rain and sleet. You can see it in the southwestern county. We also have our snow forecast. We have rain is southeastern county. Stanford county, on into southeastern waynes county. I know i had a young man who was in middle school and wanted to know if he would be out. I do not know. I think wayne county will not get a lot of flooding. Roxboro may. It through tonight and into tomorrow. The forecast looks like this. Temperatures in the 30s. Often, our winter he makes lasts all day long. Winds gusting 25. Powered by accuweather tomorrow, temperatures power by accuweather. By the afternoon, we see it moving out. I think on sunday we will get above freezing. We will go to 40 and clear things off. The problem is that sunday night into monday, we have low 20s. We could see black eyes forming is some of the bridges and overpasses. Tuesday, wednesday, thursday we actually see more precipitation in the forecast. At this point, it looks like rain in the 50s and 40s. Again, off and on throughout the day. It will continue through the evening hours. Lets check on traffic. For that, we go to first alert traffic. Amber from where we said gaylussac we are in one of those off pattern. Now, it has started to stop. It is holding off for now. That does not mean that roads are safe to go out on. It cant come back very quickly. It is at 40. I believe this is that 5 40. At any rate, taking it slow. Taking it easy. We have many people who have to go work today. If you do, that is what you need to do as you go out on these roads. Conditions are changing very quickly. Now, we will see around off with some of the other cameras. See some snow coming down. This is by durham freeway. For the time being. There. The ice is the biggest concern. In fayetteville, we have been reporting since we have been live at 4 00 this morning. They are dealing with some rainy conditions around brandon street on this friday morning. It is friday. Happy friday. Here is the storm down across northcentral carolina. A lot of these could be vehicles off to the side, because we were scanning our cameras in many of it really was not an issue. The major when i want to tell 495 northbound. Avonex it reported there. We have an accident eastbound. Some pictures. They were seeing a lot of snow. Glenwood avenue in the parkway, there is an accident. If you have any interesting pictures you want to send our way, please do so. Use the hashtag abc 11 eyewitness. You might see some of those and put them on the air. These are the conditions. This is an melvin from one of our viewers. Our friends on social media. Then come away forced conditions. We have sleet and ice coming down. Anthony wilson, everybody here is busy on social media keeping you connected and updated. On nc 86 we have troopers there. Be careful. One of the other reasons all these emergency crews are warning you to stay off the road. These state troopers and emergency workers, when they are responding to accidents, they are also in harms way. There was a snow plow in d. C. They are doing work as well that can be dangerous. If your people on the roads, the better. We need their help and we thank them. John when we come back, we will barbara welcome back. We look at live pictures and radar of the weather we are getting. John this morning, we are preempting Good Morning America to keep you up to date. We are making it available. Goodman america for those of you who want to see it, for you Time Warner Cable companies, we can find on channel 1240 and 1241. Barbara we have crews across the area seen a variety of precipitation. Of course, all of the authorities are asking you to stay off the road if possible, so they can get their job done and make sure the roads are clear. Also, people have a big job. John camden is live the staging area. John, good morning. John good morning. I was earnest far across as i can on this. We are very icy grounds. Cruise down there, they just came in from florida. Here at the walnut creek amphitheater, i will take around so you can see what we are looking at. We have 150 trucks here. Most of them are up from florida. They put up 250 workers last night. These folks ready to jump in and help out. Theyre still getting new trucks and. Theyre waiting for the hotspots so they can know where they will be. I know this all morning long will be shown you this. It does get a little bit better. When youre out on it, this is solid ice. When youre out on this stuff, it is startling. This should be bridle road. You cannot move any of this around. We are really looking at solid ice on the ground. These folks know it. I do not have to pointed out. I ask of course, is that because you are concerned about them freezing echoed that is a component. I also learned that they keep all of their tools in the bucket. Close of the bucket, and that way if it were to rain, it will fall down. They are tools will stay dry. Why they dont keep it inside the truck, i do not know. We will send it back to you. Well get another update and find out if they are starting to locate the spots where they will have the cruise. Four times being, they are on standby. We will know where we are getting the cruise that. We will send it back to you. Live from the amphitheater. Barbara thank you. They had to come up. Snow. John hopefully, we will not have to use them. As continue on. Lets go to Gloria Rodriguez. She is check out the situation roxboro. Gloria the snow has been following for the last couple of hours. I can take that being from california, it is no so beautiful. This snow is beautiful. Especially in residential areas. We have this beautiful site as a snow continues to fall here. You could see this is one of the residential areas on long avenue where there are several homes here. Now, the other thing about this note is that it is beautiful. It looks like some of the images you see on a christmas card. We do a to point out that it can get dangerous out there. So, if youre inside right now, it is a nice idea to go out and take a look at the beautiful snow. However, if you do not have to be on the road, we are advising you that you try to stay home. A lot of schools are canceled. So, if you do not live need to leave your home. If youre able to work from home or if youre able to not go to work, it is a good idea to stay we have seen some trucks out in full force. They have been putting salt on some major roads. That has been helping things. So far, no accident. That is good news. If you take a look, you can see snow here on the yard and ground. We are expecting to get 68 inches of snow here in rocks are a. No, the snow cant continue to fall. It will continue to stay out here and we bring you the latest on the snow. Back to you. Barbara thank you. Lets go to anthony live. He has been there all throughout the morning. He has seen all of the precipitation out there. How are you doing . Anthony we are called, but we are ok. We want to shady contrast here. We are in durham. We are at 5501. As you can see, we have a lot of it is something we have seen. It is a lefthand side is green. It is one of the dot trucks trying to get out of here and trying to make a difference along the spot of the interstate, however, as you can see, as cold as it has been. This could be i see. People are doing what they can to get this off the roads. We want to give a look in case you just joined us be. Back in chapel hill, we shot some video along franklin street. This is the nice part. This is where his first coming down before a got crazy. Because, after the snow, we have freezing rain. Back live, ill take you a give you look at what is behind us. It does not look like much has been done. The problem has been apparently what we have been able to see. It is not enough traffic to make the slush go away. It has gotten part of what people are asking for safety wise. Some other areas have seen more traffic. You can actually see the blacktop. That being said, they are working to clear off this area. We are in durham right now. In orange county, we did see a lot more blacktop. We hope to see more here soon. This is from breaking news one. Again, with more traffic out here. People are heeding the morning we are getting from authorities to try to stay off the road and give these crews working hard to get this away. We want to give them space to do their job. But, like i said what we have learned over in chapel hill is that the few cars that are out there in the beginning of this, apparently, we have got enough of this out of the way. We are preparing to clear the blacktop. Now, this could be a factor or a result of the freezing temperatures and cold temperatures. There are number of things that could because in this. They do not want you out here until they get it cleared up. Unless you have a good reason to be on the road, they ask you to stay clear. Let the cruise do their job. We are live on i 85. And her, Anthony Wilson, abc 11, eyewitness news. Barbara thank you. John lets continue in fayetteville. The call is downtown. Nicole . Things have changed. We have sleet falling. Here on the ground, you can see the sidewalk in front of our office that is very slick. It will go over to our car. We are all iced over, which is why ever parks out here behind me left their windshield wipers up a few hours ago. That was smart. And, we cannot see what is on the sidewalk, but this you can see. Everything is iced over. This is why schools were closed. We are not seen a lot of snow on the roads, but we definitely have some slick spots. We havent been seeing this lead for a few hours. It is out here, it is slick. What a difference 45 minutes makes. It was not like this when we were out. The freezing rain and sleet is all here. So, take it easy on the roadways. John thank you. Take it slow. Barbara is go to caitlin now. She is live from breaking news one. Caitlin i am hanging in there. It has been a long morning. We are doing what we can to help keep people safe. We pulled over to the side of the road to had a get a vehicle pulled over. They are waiting the next round of weather to come in so they know where to go next. They were out here earlier. We have crews out here. Right now, looks like most of the pavement with a little bit of ice and a glaze. For those joining us, in terms of what we saw was morning, it started out as we had some sleep. We had some freezing rain and totals. Were not seeing the kind of typically see. It was when these situations only have the ice on the roads. It does not matter if you have a fourwheel drive vehicle. There is not much you can do. We are not doing much right now, but we did see some eyes earlier. We have the staging area with the duke energy. We saw a glaze of ice on the trees already. Hopefully, we do not add to that. We do not want more of them coming down from the power lines. A lot of our facebook friends some sleet and and neighborhoods. There are slick spots out there, not just on the roads, but if you are to go out and take some pictures, be careful even going out to your front door step. It is not light or fluffy. What you are seeing out your window is hard, crusty eyes that has accumulated. You can see some of it here. We are only going 3539 Miles Per Hour. Max is 40. If you do have to go out, i would advise you to do the same. Really slow down your speed so youre prepared. Giving the vehicles plenty of room. We know from talking to them earlier they want you to do the same. They need us to get out of their way as they try to keep a say. You can go to our website. We have all of this on there. Just to recap, as a sherry the roads again, they have crews out for two days. Today, their big plan of attack is to out with salt and sand. If it is snow that they can physically push out, they will do so. There waiting and watching much like we are. They have all their crews in on standby. Energy cruise all in on standby. The good news is that we knew the storm was coming. Everybody is prepared with their fingers crossed. It is not as bad as it could possibly be. The best thing you can do is stay home. Again, if you see anything, make sure to let us know if you can do so. Take pictures and video. We do not want you risking yourself. We have been in a pax. We are cruising around the county, looking for some travel spots. Much of the same. What we are seeing is a glaze on the roads. Nothing major. That could change. We will let you know what we find. In the meantime, reporting live, i am caitlin,. Back to you. Barbara thank you. John lets get an update on the weather situation. We have Don Schwenneker and Steve Stewart working on it. Don we will get started with a look on the winter storm warning. If youre looking outside your winter your window now, nothing has started. Through 6 00 tomorrow night we could get wind and ice. I think the potential is there to see some snow. We will talk more about that coming up in a little bit. Was take a live look at the radar. The most powerful radar in the carolinas showing a few breaks. Some of the colors may be off. Stations reporting. Sometimes the computer can get a little frozen. We will go north where we see spots. Lets look and see what they are actually getting. We can go on screen to roxboro. At 8 40, a storm spot and snow accumulation. We will go south and get a report from wilson. The storm spotter is saying an hour ago, lows were covered. We have intense accumulation. We saw the cold down in that means freezing rain or sleet. That will continue to fall off and on. Back in to wake county, we get a few spots to report. We will check on those. We have freezing rain. We have one quarter of an inch. That is reported at the top of the hour. Also come out here, snow is at about one half of an inch. That is from the certified storm spotter. We will look on our social media around here. This one comes to us from heather. Check that out. Heather sent that in from clarksville. Looking towards carls lake. That is in the background area. This is what it looks like with abc eyewitness. Robert, we thank you for that. We will check in you can see on the deck, we can see a coating of snow and sleet. We have some particular to precipitation to say the least. For more, we go to Steve Stewart. Steve again, the biggest challenge will be the rain and snow line. We are seen sleet over taking this as a snow event. This is for the majority of the area getting some sleet and freezing rain. The question is how much freezing rain will we get . We still have a potential for that type of precipitation. Also, the snow totals. They will be greatly reduced. We are dealing with more sleet. Due to the calm in the freezing. It is simple. It will be snow. We are not seeing that right now. We go on the atmosphere. It is above freezing. It will fall below 32 degrees. We are also getting it at times for freezing rain. It means the raindrop will not have enough time before it reaches the ground to freeze back. That is the actual freezing rain. This is now liquid. This is something below freezing. Power lines, trees, cars. Even the roads. Even those low temperatures are still above freezing. We are overwhelmed. Especially in the entry road. We are confident that will be in the 13 and train. This is not only today but into tomorrows well. Tomorrow, snow be a half inch of two upwards of two inches. The chances will go down quickly. I might even lower them more because we see the sleet turning over. Ground temperatures in the mid30s. That is definitely colder. Once that happens, ground temperatures will go down quickly. This is a large storm system. We have a severe thunderstorm. The low will break apart the energy will transfer to a new low pressure along the coast. It will really intensify. That is why to our north we are expecting blizzard conditions. Our winds will be noticeable also. We could have some wind gusts satellite and radar composite. This will suggest all snow and the Northern Counties. We are seeing that transition over to some sleet. We do have pockets of drier air. That tells us we might see breaks in the air. It is coming off the ocean come a giving us a good supply of ocean. We have a long way to go. That is a blizzard warning to our north. It is not because well get more snow. We have a wind factor. The wind may even hit 6070 Miles Per Hour. We will continue watching the pink shade drifting north. You will notice where we see the green, that is an all rain event. It could be from fayetteville to wilson. That continues to the evening hours. That is good news. In the ice from the triangle make it to the north yakker . North . Now, heres the question i am talking about. By this point, the low will be way up to the north. Whatever moisture is left, it should be light, it will all be snow. Where of light snow showers tomorrow. For a lot of us, we could see up to an inch of snow. Freezing rain. Then, we have a wind gust. We have when gusting to 30 Miles Per Hour. We back in with the potential for little bit of eyes. We could be doing with some Power Outages. Most of us in the low category. Some areas, especially along the coast where the winds could be stronger, the potential for as we go north, this is where we are really expecting a mess. That is especially to the west. Be ultrahigh category is expecting plenty of Power Outages. The wind will bring us significant issues. What a mess. John it is a what a lot of people might not realize is that when you look outside your window, this is a storm that will last several hours. Some snowstorms we get come through and we get a hit and then it moves on. This will be off and on. It will last through today and tonight. Then, the snowfall is tomorrow. Lower snowfall totals, we put wake county at two inches. We still have the potential to see some storms. Especially tomorrow. By the time this is all done, even if it is in spots right now, we still have a shot at it. We have temperatures gradual climbing gradually climbing to the lower 30s. 6 00 this afternoon. Wintry mix possible all day long. Your sevenday forecast para by accuweather. The crowd cheering, because i think we will get the game in over at bank of america stadium. The only problem is that going towards charlotte, they have the potential for more eyes than we do. With Power Outages between here in charlotte that could cause problems. Not be a factor. Upper 30s at kickoff. The temperatures fall into the upper evening. Sevenday forecast is showing temperatures here in the mid 30s. Again, the potential for snow 40 degrees. Skies clear. We will be freezing around the region. Night into monday. Temperatures falling to around 20. Could reform and refreeze. Spots. Tuesday come we go back in the 50s as rain showers return. Lets check on the roads. Social media out there. She will be there with some of what we are seeing. Amber we want to go through some of the pictures that you are sending in. We have a slideshow being curated. It is on the home page. We love pet photos. A lot of pets are out and enjoined as quickly. Please send us your pictures using the abc 11 eyewitness. This looks like an 18 wheeler off to the side. This is how we keep a close eye on conditions. They are changing quickly. We are on and off. Right now, it seems like we are in an off phase. This morning, when the sleet was coming down, we had people sending us pictures. You can see the ice hanging off of this chair here. We would love to see the conditions where you are. If you have a quick video, send them into the hashtag abc 11 eyewitness. You might see them on the air. Some people get creative. It looks like it was written. John and barbara, will of to see that. Keep sending them in. Barbara thank you. John we have new video just in. This was salary drive and durham. Where come you can see the vehicle has slipped off of the road. With meters on the side. We do not know of any injuries. It certainly is a mess. It is one of those situations where maybe people were going to fast. Settler drive and durham just in. Barbara this is i 85 southbound. On the way to hillsboro. You can see the dod trucks. They have the solution there. Theyre trying to stay safe as precipitation comes down. We want you to staff the road, that is so those people can do their job. Speaking of getting the job done , diane wilson is in the newsroom. She is on the way to an accident in the durham area. Diane hello. Right now, where on high 40. We are coming up on the edwards exit. I have to tell you, wouldnt we first got out on these roads come without they were wet, of course you know, whats that means, once precipitation his the roads, it will freeze. We have seen a couple accidents over off to the airport. The airport area at aviation parkway was all iced over. Once you get off the main roads, then you are aware of the ice freezing on the roads. We have seen a lot of dot crews. We have to give them major props. They have been out here helping. We have seen several trucks along 40 trying to tackle these roads. That was pretty good going in. Again, it is deceiving, because it is wet and cold. Right now, we are heading towards johnson county. We have actually heard there is county. That is along 40 at the meadow exit. There is that accident. We are heading in that you have to use caution on these roadways as they are so slick. Right now, when it snows come we also say stay in the groove. The ice and slush is all mixing around. Group. People is when he gets dangerous. Were seeing several cars along the side of the road veered off. Was out here. And i will give you the psa i time. If you have to abandon your car, on the side of the road, or any have to tell it. Those. They are trying to get to a safe area as far off the roads as you possibly can. Of course come the plows will be later on today. Right now, very slick. The sleet continues to come down. Even though the windchill freeze over, we had to go the car a few times. My photographer had to get out and scrape that off. Be careful if you have to get out. This is one date you just want to stay inside. Stay warm and do not get out. Barbara thank you. We want to let you know what she is talking about. If you have to abandon your car, stager metellus that there is a place a dps. Gov where they have a website for that. John you need to call the
