Hundreds of flights have been delayed because of the record winter storm that stretches from colorado to kansas. Already, it has dropped as much as 17inched of snow in places. Winter storm warnings are in if he can for parts of kansas, missouri, arkansas, nebraska, iowa and illinois and forecasters say more snow, sleet and freezing rain is on the way today. It has my husband is supposed to fly out heading to minneapolis. Already had a flight canceled trying to get on another one. Did he . A bit of a challenge. He is going right into the heart of the beast in minneapolis in the midwest. All that video we just showed you, we arent going to see anything like that. That is the real deal. We are sort of on the edge of this. We are talking bay light wintry mix across the area. Potentially, it could cause a travel issue or two were temperatures pretty cold. We wont be dealing with a lot of moisture today. The storm doesnt have a lot to work with here in the mid atlantic. There you go. You can see it is kind of patchy but we are getting some echos there with our radar off to the west and im in the sure how much is touching the ground. Temperature are cold enough to support some winterer weather and later this morning, early this afternoon, well probably see a period of light wintry mix around here, maybe snow and sleet and maybe a transition to freezing rain and eventually rain for the rest of us as we get into the late afternoon, early evening. Temperatures will gradually warm up later today and we should eventually top out in the mid30s. Reagan national has bumped just above the freezing mark, 33 degrees. So when you get in the mountains under a Winter Weather advisory until 10 00 tomorrow morning. Primarily, the concern will be freezing rain. Eventually the Winter Weather will transition to light rain around here later tonight and during the day tomorrow and ill have more details on that coming up in a couple of minutes. Was walking his dog wednesday night on wurtz drive in woodbridge. He was just step ways from his home when police say the suspect ambushed, shot and robbed him. Suspect was caught a short time later after witnesses pointed him out. Aric Alexander Smith is now facing first degree murder charges. An 11yearold maryland girl remains in Critical Condition this morning following yesterdays tragic house fire in glenarden. Fire claimed the life of a 36 yearold man and an 8yearold and a 4yearold girl. A woman and another 8yearold girl were also injured and are recovering in stable condition. Firefighters are still investigating the cause but say there were no working smoke alarms in the house. A late night session for a panel of lawmakers in maryland and they approved both. A change to sweeping gun control measures and i arepeal of the death penalty. The Senate JudicialProceedings Committee voted 65 on a bill that would ban Capital Punishment in maryland. Senators also approved an amendment to the gun bill that prohibits anyone who has been involuntarily committed for Mental Health from owning a gun. The potential is out there for a wintry mick to start to mover into the area here later this morning during the early afternoon as were dealing with what we call overrunning. Weve got a little bit of moisture over that very cold air at the surface here in the midatlantic. The High Pressure off to the north is kind of reinforcing the cold for the time being. Area of low pressure, that is falling apart up towards chicago pushing into the great lakes. Well watch a new area of low pressure develop. This will be a player in our weather tomorrow right here off the carolina coast. That will slide up the coast tomorrow. However, it will be warm enough for us jut to be dealing with chilly rain around here during the day tomorrow. So snow lovers, yeah, it just doesnt seem to be our year. Weakening storm off to the north and west and well be in that wedge here of a light wintry mix during the afternoon. Federal Officials Say the shot was only 65 effective. That is considered slightly below average and for seniors, the shot barely made a difference protecting just 9 of elderly recipients. The spokesman from the centers for Disease Control says this years flu was one of the more severe in recent years and he says the flu shot is still the best protection because even if you get sick, the vaccine will make the illness less severe. Just a very, very little bit of moisture but with temperatures below freezing for much of the area, it has the potential to cause icing areas out there. You can seat latest radar. We have very dry air here overhead in the midatlantic. The air is very dry and we have to moisten up the atmosphere before any of this can touch the ground. I think by late morning, early afternoon, some of this will be able to make it through the atmosphere and down to the surface where we could be dealing with, during the onset here, probably a little snow and late and transitioning to a little drizzle and maybe a little bit of icing could take place out to the west where temperatures will remain colder a little longer. Lawmakers have just seven days to strike a sequestration deal. Without one, the impact of billions of dollars in spending cuts will be felt across the nation especially right here in the district. March1st is the deadline before these massive cuts would kick in. In the final days, it seems like there is a lot less negotiating going on and a lot more finger pointing. Here in the d. C. Area, we could face steep job losses and cuts because of the large federal work force and got contractors. The 85 billion in cuts this career could mean less money for teachers, fewer tsa workers at airports and fewer meat inspectors just to name a few. Democrats blame republicans for not going along with their plan for higher taxes while republicans insist deeper cuts to Entitlement Program are needed, not new taxs. This will be jobs on the line for the sequester takes place. The president will call on republicans in congress to agree to avoid the sequester. Maryland, virginia and the district of columbia, we have 21 of all of the federal payroll and federal procure minneapolis that is subject to sequestration. We only have 5 of the population. We are very vulnerable. Reporter the across the board cuts are divided evenly between defense and nondefense spending which means the d. C. Areas defense industry, pentagon and other military programs would be hit. Only social security, medicaid, Veterans Benefits and some programs for low income families are spared. Even the smithsonian museums and the national could could be impacted by this. According to the washington post, the zoo could lose 10 million from its 50 million budget. They say that would impact the exhibits at the zoo, not the animal care. So clearly the sequestration would have widespread consequences. Think about it. A young woman reported being followed by a man in a minivan in friend High Pressure heights on tuesday night. Earlier that afternoon, a man drying an suv approached a 13 yearold girl and started asking questions and then there was a similar incident last friday in silver spring. Lets move on to best actress now. This once a little more up in the air. Who do you think will win and who do you think should win . There has been a lot of split awards for this particular category. You have the youngest actress ever being nominated for an Academy Award and the oldest actress from amour. The oldest actress ever nominated for an Academy Award. Her birthday is oscar evening, oscar day. She turns 86 years old. If she were to win the award, she would be the oldest acttory ever win an Academy Award. This could be i abig win. You have a lot of different categories here. This is all split. I feel like Jennifer Lawrence for avril linings playbook has the momentum after she won the sag award.
