Jessie wants to know the history behind the lock keepers house on constitution avenue. If you dont know what were talking about, offhand being well show you a picture of it in just a moment. What exactly does or did it lock . Ive noticed the building before. Lets take a look. We have a picture of the building. Want to take a picture of the building. It is the lock keepers house located you have aseen this before. It is located on constitution avenue at the corner of constitution and 17th. Right down at the mall. By the world war ii memorial. Close to it. Constitution and 17th. It is between the world war ii memorial and the white house, right . There is not much around it. I think i know which one you are talking about. It is a historic building. Well, you want me to start this . Ill start t back in the 1800s first of all of course the first of all, this city was the most different looking. Wash was not the prettiest city in the world. The Washington Monument was only half done. The capitol was being constructed during and after the civil war, the capitol dome, the new dome, i should say. What we know as constitution avenue. These are historic pictures of it, it was a canal. Really . It was the Washington Canal. There is a good picture of it. It was an extension of the c o canal. What happened is transportation back in the day, it was horses and canals. This is in the early 1800s. Cant remember which president it was. You keep talking and ill find it for you. Commissioned he dropped 100,000 of federal money. James madison. James madison dropped 100,000 of federal money to build this Washington Canal which would link up with the c o canal. This was to bring more commerce into the growing city of washington. They dug the canal. They only dug it three feet deep. Why i dont know. It was never really successful. First of all, during high tide, it overflowed. During low tide, it was impassable, not usable. The lock keeper used to stay there. The lock keeper would collect tolls and kept records of passing commerce. They believe the house was built around 1835. The canal never really worked. It eventually became an open sewer. In the 1860s. That didnt work either so they then filled it in but they kept the house here to this day. Can you tour it, right into. There is nothing to tour. That is it. I thought can you go in. The National ParkService Still maintains t i think they keep it basically as a storage facility. But it does still sit there. Eventually, railroads and the like surpassed the importance of the can ams. It became an open sewer. It was a storm drain and finally boss shepherd, he was the head of public works here in washington, he ordered the canal filled in beginning in 1871. It then, after it was filled in became b street, b as in boy and that was changed into constitution avenue. That is why there is no b street downtown. Oh fascinating. Isnt that cool . I love this. Thank you, guys. Im glad that question came in. I noticed it like many people have. You dont think much about it. So there you go. Jessie, we hope you answered it. We did answer it.
