We have rain coming straight down, freezing rain, sleet in some areas as we take a live look outside. We see what you are going to experience as you head out for your morning commute on this monday, january 28th. Im sarah simmons. Im wisdom martin. Welcome to fox 5 morning news. That does not look good out there. Causing all kinds of problems. Lets get you caught up with the major weather delays. We begin with the federal government. Federal offices in the d. C. Area will open at noon today. Opm has asked federal workers to stay off the roads until 10 00 a. M. Federal employees have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework. D. C. Public schools an offices will be open two hours late today. Essential personnel must report on time. In maryland, Allegany County schools are closed today. Frederick county, Maryland Public School are delayed two hours. Also, garrett county, Montgomery County and Prince Georges County Public Schools are all on twohour delays today. In virginia, Arlington County schools and loud coup county schools are close you had t alexandria city and fredericksburg city schools are on a twohour delay. Also a twohour delay for page county, Prince William county, Stafford County and Warren County schools. There are a number of private schools and local governments and businesses that have changed their status for today. You can see those along the bottom of the screen. Now, it is your turn. You can tell us how long well be experiencing this. Throughout the course of the Morning Hours with the freezing rain and sleet and then well see it change to rain. We have some fog oarkted with it later as well. Lets take a look right now at what were seeing here. And weve got mainly a mixture of some freezing rain and some light snow and even a pocket of rainfall you can see near fredericksburg along the i95 corridor there. This is widespread. It will continue to do so into the course of the morning. Definitely making for some very slick conditions and dont be fooled by a little bit of rain here and there. As we move into the Morning Hours, well still see the freezing rain and sleet continue. Lets go to our weather maps. Winter weather advisory in effect for the areas you see shaded in the light purple there. Garrett county, maryland, in the bright pink, they are under a winter storm wning. Up to an inch of snowfall expected there. We arent expecting any of that across the d. C. Metro region at all or our neighbors. 32 at dulles. 31 at bwi thurgood marshall. By about midday, well be about 36 degrees. The 5 00 hour, ive put some spotty showers in there. I am anticipating a chance of some of that fog starting to develop as well. Visibility certainly impacted. But mainly all rain as we do progress. Morning slick spots, that is an understatement, right, julie . Lets get to julie right now. A lot of folk talking about icy conditions coming out of waldorf. Allow extra time out there on the roads. Watch your speeds. Craig hit me up and said that the ramps are very slippery, like a sheet of ice coming offer the beltway to head outbound along route 4. If it looks wet out there at this hour, it could be black ice so be very careful. Icy conditions reported coming in out of manassas. Problems right now out at 29 gainesville. The Railroad Crossing gates are stuck in the down position. Police are there to help direct you around. This happens to be 66 coming inbound out of manassas leaving business 234. Lanes are open so far without incident as you continue inbound towards fair oaks and 123. Outer loop of the beltway again deal with the wet pavement as you travel west of 495 and head over towards connecticut avenue. Connecticut avenue, that is where we had the water main break at knowles avenue and that was tying up the southbound drive. The lanes are open with no robs to report coming in out of frederick no problems to report coming in out of frederick. Delays are now starting to build out of woodbridge as you continue across the occoquan. Thats a check of your fox 5 ontime traffic. Thank you. You heard julie. You will want to be extra cautious when heading out on the roads today. Things are pretty slippery out there right now t could get a lot worse. Melanie alnwick is live in sterling, virginia with an update. Good morning. The best i can tell you is things hook pretty good out here on route 7 in sterling. Really just rain at this point and it seems like it has let up for a little bit. Earlier today when we were heading out here, there was some changes over from sleet to freezing rain and then back to plain rain. But at this point, it looks like traffic is moving quite well. Lots of people out here on the roads perhaps trying to get to work. Hoping that the road temperatures will still stay warm enough for them to be able to get there in just wet conditions at this point. We have to know that vd. O. T. Crews and m High Pressure d. O. T. Crews and dd. O. T. Crews all out there standing by at the ready. They said they pretreated the slick spots, the thins they know are prone to icing over. Parts of springfield interchange, some of those brings an overpasses that we talk about so much. We are not seeing anything, whether it is on the grass or on the power lines or on the bushes, we havent seeing anything pleasing over at this point. I did a quick check also over on the Road Conditions on the road temperatures in maryland. Can you do that by going to their web site and it looks like the road temperatures were coming up just a little bit, in some cases, 3 , 33 degrees here around the d. C. Area. Wow coming down out there as weve been talking about all morning long create something mess on the roads. So be careful if you are out and about this morning. It will be a very interesting day. Im trying to look pretty closely. What do you think . It depends on where that is. Some areas have freezing rain and will continue to get it this morning. There is more freezing rain than rain out there right now. Well get right to it. Lets begin with a look at our fox 5 accuweather radar and show you what is happening here. Pink you see is the widespread freezing rain across the area. A little bit of light snow across the area. A lot of that is right over here towards delmarva towards the east. All of this pink is the freezing rain and sleet. We have this Little Pocket of rainfall along the i95 corridor from fredericksburg to manassas. You want to anticipate the fact that all of this freezing rain and sleep still has to move east. So i know melanie mentioned in some areas it seemed like it was raining a little bit where she was and it got freezing rain and back to rain again. This will continue to move east so be prepared. We have a Winter Weather advisory in this entire area. This is in effect until 10 00 this morning. A winter storm warning for garrett county, maryland. Up to an inch of snowfall is anticipated there. D. C. At 34 degrees. 32 at frederick. 30 at hagerstown. Cumberland at 30. Weve got dulles at 32. To the south, fredericksburg at 35 degrees. Well see this all change into rain a little bit later o the temperature playing a big part. It is currently 34 at d. C. The surface temperatures are expected to be at freezing and below. So weve got this low pressure system moving in associated warm front with it and that is bringing in all of this active weather were dealing with. Well be a far cry as we move through into the next couple of days where well see drier conditions and a big boost in our temperatures as we get a strong southerly flow kicking in. In the meantime, still some colder air lingering through into the course of tonight. Later on today, when it does change for rain, well see the chance of fog. Future raft, still some mix, a lot of rainfall to the south. Same story for the 9 00 hour and then we get a little bit of a break starting to kick in and by 1 00, more rain. It is not a total washout for the day. There will somebody periods where you will see some breaks. As we move through into the later party of the died, maybe some spotty showers by the 5 00, 6 00 hour and then the rain stays mainly to the west into the course of tonight. I cant rule out maybe a passing shower or two. Tuesday, dry conditions at 55. Big warmoccupy wednesday, 61 degrees but with it, rain and the chance of seeing a thunderstorm pop up in the afternoon then we get back to dry conditions. We are back to reality, back to the 40s and 30s before it is all said and done right through to the end of the week. Lets check some with traffic nowant julie wright. We had some problems out here. The weather not helping our commute for those along Marc Brunswick line. We are told you can anticipate at least an hour delay on Marc Brunswick trains. Metro will honor your tickets. Out here on the roads behind me, this is 395 at duke street. For the most part, just anticipating some precipitation here. Weve had two separate accidents before and after quantico so already delays are forming at 610 head north up towards dumfries. This is northbound i95 here in wood brim. This is that delay in the main line that i just mentioned headed out of woodbridge. Brings, ramps and overpasses, that is what were concerned with. I got a number of tweets coming in talking about how the ramp to and from the beltway are still slippery. I saw a number of truck on my drive in this morning on stand by to help give you some traction. If you get behind a play train or salt truck rain, allow them to do their job. It will give you some traction. Looking through the rain, this is like a nice little icicle here, southbound 270, lanes are open but the pace is slow moving from frederick headed southbound in the direction of clarksburg. You will find your lanes are open at the wilson bridge and over at the American Legion bridge with veryling incidents to report. We do have the problem with the water main break tying up a portion of connecticut avenue southbound at knowles. Thats a check of your fox 5 ontime traffic. Traffic. Wet roadways out there as well as throughout the area this morning as beam deal with rain, phrase freeing rain, sleet, just changing back and forth throughout the area. We have that pink which is all your freezing rain and sleet and then there is a pocket of rainfall in there stretching along the i95 corridor through to the south towards fredericksburg. This will be the pattern into the course of the day. It is all moving east. It will start to fill in even more as we progress and then well see some fog a little bit later on as well which will just make things worse into the evening hours. Lets go to our weather maps. Winter weather advisory in effect until 10 00 this morning for the sleet and freezing rain. That encompasses pretty much everywhere. That bright pink you see is garrett county, maryland where theyre under a winter storm warning up to about an inch there expected in terms of accumulation. Ice accumulation for the sleet and freezing rain is not expected to be very much. Current temperatures, 34degree degrees at reagan national. And were talking a high today of 41 degrees. It will get a little breeze you. The wind will pick up from the south 10 to 15 Miles Per Hour. You want to do a little comparison, yesterday, our high was 38degree. Today, we are headed to 41. This will all turn to rain eventually but well also have some fog to deal with. Morning slick spots, that is what were dealing with. Be careful on the sidewalks as well as you are heading out and hopefully our seniors, if they dont have to go out, they will just stay in. It will be really dicey for them. Very good idea. A lot of people saying the roads didnt seem to be that bad but the sidewalks are quite slippery. Keep an eye out for pedestrians walking to the metro stop. Metro will honor your Marc Brunswick passes this morning. Marc brunswick says at least an hour delay there. We started out with the freezing precipitation headed into the area. Accident activity before and after quantico now cleared. Average speed down to about 38 Miles Per Hour headed north up into dale city. Woodbridge only at 41 Miles Per Hour continuing out towards the capital beltway. Lets pop up the cameras. Depending on where you are traveling in from, you could be encount are august mix of freezing rain. It is quite complicated out here. So far on 66, wet pavement only for those continuing from fair oaks inbound towards the capital beltway. Melanie alnwick out in sterling, it appears to be just wet pavement at this point. You will find if you are traveling into the district dupont circle, dd. O. T. Just tweeted that they are monitoring the roads and so far just waking up to wet pavement downtown. Back out into Montgomery County. Out are loop of the beltway starting to show that slowdown forming at university boulevard headed around towards colesville road. Thats a check of your fox 5 ontime traffic. E traffic. Many. Roads across our region have been treated ahead of todays weather alert too. But drivers will still need to be extra careful when they head out this morning. Fox 5s Melanie Alwin is live in sterling, virginia with the latest on the conditions. Good morning. It looks like the precipitation has start to the pick up a little bit here out in sterling, virginia. But at this point, it is still all rain but the rain is getting a the bit heavier. We are seeing out here on route 7 just wet pavement and very steady traffic. Look like a little low right here as people get between the lights. As they come through the lights, i would say they are moving at a pretty good clip. No slowdowns on route 7. The good news is that, for the most part, the pavement temperatures are hovering. They are just below freezing but they are not so cold that it would prevent vd. O. T. From using their full complement of tools to fight the icing. They are able to use magnesium chloride and also abrasives and sand to get to the areas that might ice up. Basically, where the air kind of circulates around and you dont get the warming from the ground underneath. We know they have their full complements out. They were out around midnight pretreating the roadways because the road temperatures stayed high enough that they were able to do that. So, so far, so good out here in fairfax county. Back to you. The Washington Post says one attempt happened around 3 00 a. M. Near baltimore avenue and another happened around 1 00 that afternoon in the same area. Police arrested three suspects in the first case but say the suspect involved in the second incident has not been arrested yet. A murder in Anne Arundel County is under investigation this morning. Early sunday morning, police say they noticed suspicious activity on tan yard cove road in glen burnie. Police checked the wooded area nearby and found a dead man with a gunshot wound. Police took three people into custody for question. Later this week, i asenate Judiciary Committee meeting begins hearing on posthumouslys gun control proposals. Today, antigun advocates plan to rally in front of the white house to increase discourse on the gun laws. The president and secretary of state lawmaker sat down if a joint interview as she prepares to step down as americas top diplomat. What a way to start off our week with that wintry mix out there. Very messy commute this morning and we have a whole mixture of things going on out there. A little bit of light snow in some areas, freezing rain, sleet and rain. So lets get right to t well be in with a look at our fox aaccuweather radar and show you the area that are being impacted and with what right now. A little bit of light snow some of you saw earlier. Most of that now is to the east over delmarva but then all this pink that you see is a mixture ever sleet rand freezing rain. Some of you seeing that order just some rainfall. You can see here through fredericksburg along the i95 corridor. This will all change over to rain but just the same, it is make tailing inconvenient out there this morning as you head through with the morning commute. A lot of sidewalk and side roads may not be treated. This will all eventually change over to rain and well have to deal with some fog a little bit later as well. So lets go to our weather maps. Winter weather advisory currently in effect. This entire area shaded here. That until 10 00 this morning. Garrett county, maryland, this is where the pink is. They are under a winter storm warning. Theyve got some snowfall there anticipating about an inch of accumulation. I want to mention that the ice we are seeing through here, we are not talking a lot of accumulation here at all for that. It is just making it a little bit slick. 32degrees this hour at tull less. 30 at gaithersburg. 32 at baltimore. D. C. At 34. 35 to the south at fredericksburg and weve got 30 degree at cumberland while metroburg and winchester are at 32 degrees. So todays high, well slip a little bit into the low 40s. Yesterday, we were 38 degrees. Not much warmer than that. A ridge of High Pressure will slide its way off the coast. Low pressure system with associated warm front slides its way in. This is going to actually stall out into tuesday. But this is bringing us ahead of it all of this precipitation. Well end up seeing a drier day for your tuesday. Wednesday get even better in term of our temperature but in term of sky conditions, we are talking rain and a chance of some thunderstorms. Weve got a stronger frontal system headed our way by then. We are getting a little bit of it all. Here is a look at futurecast. This is particular model showing us by the time we hit the 7 00 hour, we are still dealing with the mixed precipitation to the south, a little bit more rainfall. Some of it heavy at time. By the time we get to 10 00, it is starting to push its way out a bit. Still some lange aring showers at the 11 00 hour. Not a total washout for the afternoon. You will see a few breaks here and there. By the time you get to 6 00, could have say spotty shower or so. Here is a look at your fox aaccuweather sevenday forecast. 55degrees for your tuesday. Big jemaah islamiyahen in those temperatures with the southerly wind flow. Gets even better temperature wise at 61. Chaps of some thunderstorms on wednesday afternoon. We get back to dry and sunshine as far as conditions are concerned as we move through thursday to the end of the week. The reality is back to where we should be temperaturewise as we dip right back to the 30s. This is just a little brief treat in terms of the temperature from Mother Nature but the freezing rain and sleet today. Lets check in now with julie wright. We have a problem with Railroad Crossing gates this time around in Montgomery County. While gwen was doing weather, i watched few cars coming eastbound onto randolph road. They are making a uturn in the middle of of the street and headed back in the web direction. It looks like they are under Police Direction and working your way around signifile file there. This is blacked off because the Railroad Track are stuck in the down position. Out in gainesville, we are told those Railroad Crossing gates are working again. Dealing with the wet past at this point. The bridges, ramps and overpasses freeze before anything. It is something to consider as you make your way into work this morning. A number of tweets coming in saying roads may be wet but the sidewalk are ice so keep an eye out for pedestrians as well working that you are way out to the metro stop. 395 at the pentagon, no issues reported as you continue across the 14th street bridge. They are monitoring the roads and simply doling with wet pavement but they are prepared in case things start to ice up for you. Beltway outer loop at nam ham avenue flowing closer to university boulevard headed over. Beltway outer loop as New Hampshire avenue flowing closer to university boulevard headed over. I can just hear people going look, my life is busy. Way only ask of you to commit for one year and you get an opportunity to spend at least see the child twice a month. Twice a month for how long . For a couple of hours. And for people who are like i dont have the skills, what contactually would they be doing . With casa, dont feel like because youve never volunteered before you dont need specific skills. We train you on whatever you need. Whatever your background is, you can always be an asset to casa.
