for being with us. >> i'm sarah simmons. let's get to this. rescueers in missouri continue their search for any survivors from the massive tornado that hit on sunday night. seven teen people were pulled out alive yesterday from the rubble in joplin. right now, the death toll stands at 116. the state's governor expects that number to climb. little was spared. thousands of homes, churches and businesses were destroyed during this. a major hospital also saw a lot of damage. six people there were killed, five patients and one visitor. residents say they cannot believe what the twister did. >> it is a disaster. i never seen anything like it so i really can't describe it. >> i was planning on helping where it was really torn up but there is nothing really to help. it is just flattened. >> the tornado hit with winds close to 200 miles per hour. forecasts are say more severe weather is expected throughout the week and we have just heard from president obama overseas in england who calls the disaster devastating and heart- breaking. the white house announced the president will visit missouri on sunday. here, a little unsettling weather but not too much that we can't deal with at least. >> our main issue is it is humid out there. we could see a couple of scattered showers and thunderstorms. that who be about it. let me show you what is going on. we'll start with a look at the raid or on max 2. you can see the precipitation -- i'm sorry. there is no precipitation coming through. what is coming through is some virga. i don't believe it is hitting the ground. it is showing up on this particular radar image. on hd radar, it is not showing up. as we pull out, there is some activity in west virginia now. some showers and some thunderstorms early this morning moving across west virginia. they are moving eastward. i don't believe they will stay intact and get into our area but we will watch it during the course of the next couple of hours. temperatures across the region, 69 degrees right now in the nation's capital. 72 in baltimore and at patuxent naval air station. dulles airport is at 68 degrees. your day planner for today, it is going to be hot and humid. not as humid later today as it was yesterday in the afternoon. possible storms here and there during the course of the afternoon and evening. some thunderstorms and high temperatures today in the upper 80s. yeah, the upper 80s, almost 10 degrees above normal today. more details on the forecast coming up in just a little bit. >> getting hot out there. also heating up on the roadways as well this morning. let's check in with julie wright. >> i hope you like blueberries because we've got a lot of them out there. an accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer around 1:30 this morning dumping out a load of blueberries across the highway as well as a fuel spill involved. the outer loop from 4959 to # 95 national harbor, this overturned tractor-trailer remains on the side. the change? we now have some traffic getting by single file to the right on the ramp. on the ramp from the outer loop of the beltway to exit onto 295, you squeeze by single file to the right. they did try to upright that tractor-trailer hurricane gabrielleer this -- that tractor-trailer earlier this morning but when they did, we are told it ripped apart. as of right now, traffic squeezes by on the ramp from the outer loop to # 95 national harbor single file to the right. -- to 295 national harbor single file to the right. finding some delays, unexpected delays at this hour because of that incident. southbound 270, lanes are open out of hyattstown. you will find lanes are open inbound on 66. below speed fair oaks to 123 and again at the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. a developing story out of montgomery county where police are talking now with the driver involved in a deadly hit and run accident. the accident last night just before 10:00 near veirs mill and center hill street in wheaton. police say a husband and wife were struck by a white bmw after they got off the bus. the woman died. man is in critical condition. police say the driver initially stopped, then left the scene. the vehicle was found a short time later in a nearby neighborhood. the 29-year-old driver and a passenger were also found nearby. >> we are monitoring metro this morning. anden terrible investigation has been launched by the metro transit police department after a disturbing video was posted on the internet. this is it right here in what appears to show two officers throwing a man in the wheelchair to the ground. police say they were trying to arrest dwight harris for drinking in public. they claim harris was resisting arrest and it resulted in him falling out of his whale chair. he tells a very different story. >> they picked me up out of my chair and forced me to the ground. >> it is very advertise turning video, causes me great concern and it is not how i want metro police, d.c. police or anyone to be with one of our residents. >> harris, as you can see, did suffer a minor injury. the investigate into all aspects of this arrest could take several days. the two officers without bond. rodney mcuntire was in court yesterday. the body of his daughter was found in a trash can last november. police say forensic and electronic evidence led to her father's arrest and there was evidence of a sexual relationship between the two. president obama and the first lady continue their european visit in london today. a formal arrival ceremony will take place at buckingham palace, justify over an hour from now. they will meet with the queen along with newlyweds prince william and kate middleton. the president what in ireland yesterday where he met with ireland appear president people are but they are older than me. there you go. the times, they are achanging but not enough show. we are stuck in a weather pattern where it will be hot, humid and scattered storms. here is the difference between yesterday and today. today, not quite as humid as yesterday. let's take a look at the temperatures. yesterday's high temperatures across the area, no records but it got quite warm. now, look at these highs and believe it or not, today will be hotter than this. dulles international, 82 yesterday. bwi marshall, 84 for the high today. we've dropped off to 68 degrees. this is some fog, some mist out there as we have the humid conditions across the region. our dew points are in the upper 60s. that is in the uncomfortable range. 72degrees is the current palmetto temperature. 68 in manassas. 69 at dulles. learn arrestedtown is at 70 degrees. satellite raid -- leonardtown is at 70 degrees. this is virga, not hitting the ground. what is probably hoeing up is some of that moisture that we have in the -- what is probably showing up as some of that moisture that we have in the area. we don't think the showers and thunderstorms will work that you are way in here this morning but we'll keep watching it. arkansas, tennessee, they were seeing some strong storms. that area of rain is now diminishing. particularly humid this morning and then i think some drier air work its way in here. not quite as humid this afternoon. scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. high today, 87 degrees. that is nine degrees above normal. for tonight, mostly cloudy, scattered evening showers and thunderstorms. 68-degree for your overnight low in -- 68-degree for your overnight lows in town. 9 # on friday and saturday, another chance of showers and on the outer loop of the beltway to go 295 national harbor. this overturned tractor-trailer flipped over around 1:30 this morning. it was loaded with blueberries. they made an attempt to up right the vehicle and when they did, it tore apart and more blueberries were spilled out on the highway. i love this shot. they've got one lane it the right getting by the scene of the overturned tractor-trailer. m-d.o.t. tells me after 9:00 this morning, they will come back to retrieve the vehicle. coming out of virginia, across the wilson bridge, traffic now lined up to the far left side of your screen here. can you squeeze by single file to the left to exit at national harbor. we'll take it back inside. you will fine the lanes are open if you are continuing your trip on the outer loop coming out of virginia. no problems to report right now as you continue to work your way across the bridge span and head over towards oxon hill. that portion of the beltway remains open at this time. traveling northbound 395, this is where we have the wreck tying up the right lane at this point. we'll say good morning to the crew in sky fox. they were above an accident which owe coward on i-70 the dow down 130. all three major averages slumping more than 1% thanks to europe and a bunch of debt woes popping up. there is a rebound this morning so hopefully things will be a little bit better today. >> we look at what has been happening across the country, specifically in the midwest. there is a financial toll when it comes to mother nature and her wrath. are we able to put a price ago on what is happening. >> up until the month of may, the record-setting month of april with 875 different tornadoes wreaking economic havoc worth $5 billion in damages according to a risk reinsurer. then you have the joplin, missouri damage and that will only take that number high are and then you have the mississippi river flooding and all of that damage as well rediverting the waters to the rural areas to spare the big cities like baton rouge and new orleans expected to cost $2.2 bill wrong in property damage and hurt more than 21,000 homes. so billions of losses because of mother nature. >> staggering numbers all around. we'll leave it there for now. we'll see you tomorrow morning though. we continue to follow developments out of missouri this morning as lauren was just talking about. rescue and search crews in joplin finding some survivors in the rubble. but officials are fearing that that death toll will continue to rise. the latest on the ground this morning. also, locally, police investigating a hit and run that happened near a bus stop that killed a woman late last night. the driver has been found. there are still questions this morning. we'll update that story as people that are watching it as well as it hit missouri with winds close to 200 miles per hour. it left behind a destructive path. it was a half mile wide. little was spared out of. this the together now, people in joplin, missouri are holding onto each other because they have nothing to go home to. it's race against the clock to find survivors and authorities are fearful that the death toll will continue to climb. >> it is always difficult. in fact, it is the first thing that red cross deals with in a disaster like this. >> i can't imagine what it is like not knowing. >> sunday appear tornado was half a mile wide and those would lived there through it say it is nothing like they had ever heard or witnessed before. >> we ran to the bathroom. i got the kids in. i put a mattress over us and held it down. >> it was bringing the debris with t we just all got in the house, got in the shower. stayed there. rode it out. >> on monday, a as city officials and teams of rescuers kept nonessential people out of the danger zone, an ominous black cloud spun over the rubble. this blue collar see of 50,000 is vowing to pull itself up by the bootstraps. >> we have a great community in joplin. recently, it was recognized as the number one community to live in in the state of missouri and we're about to show the rest of the world why. >> nearly 500 people have now been killed in tornadoes this year alone. now, normally, it is around 60 or 70. coming up at 8:00, we are talking with a noaa meteorologist to find out if these are just random occurrences or if storm are growing even stronger. -- if storms are growing even stronger. the driver involved in a deadly hit and run in montgomery county now being questioned by police. stacy cohan live in wheaton with the latest here. >> reporter: this accident happened last evening. a couple, a man and woman, had gotten off the bus at a bus stop just a few yards behind me back there on veirs mill road. that is when they were hit just before 10:00 p.m. it was dark outside. a white bmw was traveling eastbound. the husband and wife had stepped off into the middle of the street when they were struck. the car did not stop. it kept going. the car was found within the hour, just in the very same area not too far away. two people that were in the car had split up. they were both found and the driver submitted to a breathalyzer test. the female involved in this crash, the one that was hit, unfortunately died and the male is in critical but stable condition. this is one of far too many pedestrian fatalities here in montgomery county. >> many times, it is tough to find a place to cross the street and i don't want to place blame in this case but pedestrians sometimes take the easiest route. here was a bus shelter. they live in the neighborhood directly across from the the bus shelter. it is natural that anyone who cross the street the bus shelter is. >> the driver of the bpw is 29- year-old pierre michelle. this investigation continues. before one woman dead and another man in stable condition in the hospital. i'm stacy cohan being back to you. >> thank you. we are monitoring metro this morning. an internal hurting recovery budgets at a time when money was already tight. next, a look at what lawmakers are doing now to help get money where it is needed most. am it is quite a challenge and it is always fun devastating tornadoes in the south, flooding, clean-up and a deluge along the mississippi river and now joplin, missouri dealing with the deadliest single tornado in nearly 60 years, people's' federal money is in demand. >> no way you can ever anticipate tragedies like we've seen in missouri and in alabama and throughout the whole mississippi gulf region with the flooding. >> one of our biggest concerns with fema during thissen tour process is make sure they have the money. >> reporter: lawmaker on board wanted to make sure fema has enough money to pay for the people would really need it. this trying to add more money to the homeland security spending bill for fiscal year 2012 and they will do it with what is called a supplemental. >> it could be for things that are out of the ordinary and that is exactly what a supplemental is. >> we want to make sure that everybody who needs help is going to get help. gentleman an admittedly tough challenge is yet ahead and years that the gop is trying to clamp down on spending. with americans suffering in so many regions, these lawmaker say haar mission is clear. >> we'll make sure they have the funding that they need. we'll do it in a response wrubl way. >> we're faced with this huge difficult age. in my opinion, you help the people first and you help the communities first and then we try to come up with some way to pay for it later. >> the house appropriation committee will mark up the spending bill on tuesday. it is not clear just how much money they are trueing to inject into the new physician -- trying to uninject into the new fiscal -- they are trying to inject into the new fiscal year. let's talk to tony about the forecast. >> it is steamy out there. warm temperatures and humidity over 90%. let's take a look at our temperatures across the region. we are in the 60s and 70s already. 68degrees here in the nation appear capital. annapolis, maryland, is at 72 degrees. so is baltimore. we have 68-degree in manassas and in quantico. fredericksburg is at 72. cull and are, 70 degrees and up in maryland, it is 70 degrees. here is a look at the satellite- radar. i told you a few minutes ago, we are continuing to watch this system making its way eastward. it is doing two things. it is showing some signs of breaking up but yet still, portions of it hanging together enough that i would not be shocked if some of our viewers get some showers out of this. i don't know about the thunderstorms. we could see some showers come out of this during the morning hour as it continues to track directly eastward towards washington, d.c. we have known there is a chance of rain but we could see some of those showers even this morning. stormy conditions in arkansas into tennessee, portions of mississippi this morning. our forecast for today looks like this. partly sunny, warm and humid. scattered showers and thunderstorms, high today about 87 degrees. a warm one, folk. it will be warm all hagerstown, maryland and to the volvo powertrain north america facility. this is where they make heavy- duty engines and transmissions for trucks. there is about 1300 people that work here and they've been around for quite sometime. they are celebrating their 50th anniversary so that goes to show you we can still discover new things in our own backyard and this morning the discovery process is cool. we're going to learn how they assemble and design the engines. they just recently designed the cleanest engine out there and we'll talk about that anniversary celebration. that's a chance for
