let's go to the satellite-radar and we'll take a look at current conditions and you will be able to see that, as we get into the morning hours, we have lost the rain showers and the thunderstorm activity is now well north and east of the city. it is out of here. we are dealing just with winds. we'll have a lot of wind today. we could see gusts in the order of 40, 45 miles per hour here during the course of the afternoon so very windy conditions expected. 56 at reagan national. wind out of the south and west at 14 miles per hour. generally, you know, if you just look out the window, it will be a good-looking day with a lot of sunshine and warmer temperatures. it will be very windy out there at times. >> let's check in with julie wright and find out what is happening on the roads with all the water. >> we are dealing with water. we are dealing with traffic lights that aren't working. we've got utility poles down, trees down, leaves, debris, you name it. we got a lot going on. sarah simmons has been reporting live from the scene along george mason drive. it remains closed right now between 15th and 16th streets with a pole down and wires that need to be restrung and that sort of thing. we are told from authorities out in arlington, this will be the closure for quite some time. there is a lot to clean up right now. this tree hanging down across the highway and that sort of thing is what we're waking up to this morning because of all the storm we had last night. this is just one intersection we are talking about. we've got 50 out in goshen tied up right now because of a tree down across the roadway. massachusetts avenue over near observatory circle. river road headed inbound towards the d.c. line. a portion of that blocked off again because of trees and wires down across the highway just to name a few of the intersections. if you are making the trip along 355, we have problems with signal lights that are not working. major roads, not so bad right now. it is getting there that will be the trouble spot. once you make your way out to the interstates, you are dealing with road spray. a portion of the dulles toll road still tied up at the beulah rooted overpass. the right side of the road remained blocked in the direction of the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. the latest in the chandra levy murder trial now. in just a few hours, a jury will begin deliberating to decide if ingmar guandique killed chandra levy in rock creek park nine years ago. jurors have to make a decision with very little evidence. there are no dna and no eyewitnesses. attorneys made their closing arguments yesterday in that trial. prosecutor amanda haines got upset guard the end while holding up a picture of chandra levy. her voice cracked. she said justice is what needs to happen. chandra has been waiting nine years. on capitol hill, one of the most powerful men in congress is now guilty of 11 ethics violations. a house ethics panel convicted long-time democrat representative charlie rangel yesterday. the new york congressman is denouncing the decision and says he was deprived of due process. the panel is now deciding his punishment. new details in the prince george's county corruption scandal that has so far resulted in the arrest of county executive jack johnson, his wife and nine others. prosecutors told the court that two of the suspects, a prominent businessman and his wife were heard on wiretaps discussing millions of dollars in laundered money, bribe to public officials and an immigrant smuggling allegation. >> that is the government's course that they seem to be taking that there was extortion and bribes. >> johnson and his wife are charged with witness tampering and destroying evidence for allegedly taking payments from developers so she could get federal money from a federal housing program. maryland authorities are waiting for results from an autopsy on a body found near mile marker 48 near braddock mountain. police are not saying whether the victim is a man or woman or the cause of death, only that the body is an adult. police are investigating this as a homicide. >> it is certainly an unusual circumstance we are feeling with, fining the body any box on a rural highway. it was something our state highway administration working crews came across and immediately called police because they knew something was not right our homicide investigators are definitely looking into missing persons reports in all neighboring states. >> anybody who may have any information is being asked to call the frederick county law enforcement center. also, new developments in the case of a murder american university professor, 5 #-year- old sue ann -- 52-year-old sue ann marcum was found dead. police have arrested a potential suspect. a hollywood heavy weight is gunned down just a few hours after takenning a movie premiere. we'll have that full -- after attending a movie premiere. we'll have that full story straight ahead. as making headlines at 10 minutes after 6:00 be a controlled burn gone out of control. firefighters in florida are still trying to put out a massive wildfire. so far, it has burned 500 acres in bravard county actually bright land owner did have a burn permit but unexpected wind picked up and fanned the flames which jumped several fire lines. police had to close i-95 for several hours as a result. in hollywood, there is shock at the shooting death of a popular publicist. ronnie chasen was killed after attending at movie of the new movie burlesque. police found her in her mercedes. she is been shot several times in the chest. investigators say they don't have any suspects right now and they say they don't know of any threats against chasen. the makers of four loko say they are pulling the property prod uct off the market and will no longer put caffeine in the popular alcoholic drink. food and drug administering was set -- administration was set to ban four loko today. there is more bad news for bp. a new report says the company and its contractors missed or ignored warning signs on that doomed well. a group of technical experts put out a 28-page report last say bp failed to learn from near misses. that report also says we may never know the exact cause of that the oil well explosion because most of the evidence was lost in the april explosion. we'll have more on the severe weather that moved through the area overnight straight head and what you can expect as you head out the door this morning. stay overnight storms flipped small planes. we are told roofs were ripped off some buildings in the trenton mercer airport. >> big thunderstorms rolling right through the carolinas up through the mid-atlantic and now north and east of new york city and lots of lightning along the way. very impressive line of storms, severe thunderstorm warnings, possible tornado northeast into baltimore. >> gosh! >> hard to believe it is the middle of november. not typical weather for this time of year as we all know. later today, good weather in the form of southern and warmer temperatures. let me give you the heads up we will have more winds around here later today. we have a wind advisory. i'll show that to you in just a second. temperature are mild. when you step out the door, you will say it feels great out here, feels kind of tropical. mid-50s to start the morning. 56 at reagan national. 55 in quantico. the mountains, not so bad. 5 # in martinsburg, 53 in hagerstown. nice start, temperature-wise. that is part of the good news in this forecast. another part of the good news, we'll get more sunshine. i'll show you why in just a second. wind will be gusting around here, 40, 45 miles per hour here in washington. out to the west, it is possible we could have 50-mile per hour wind gusts later today. we just got a wind gust in hagerstown of 33 miles per hour. because of that, we have a wind advisory that goes into effect at 9:00 this morning. most of the area, it looks like central virginia and southern eastern virginia not under the wind advisory but most of the north central maryland including the district and points out to the west under this wind advisory. gusts expected to be 40, 45, maybe 50 miles per hour on some of the ridge tops later today. the reason why, area of low pressure off to our north and west is responsible for not only the thunderstorm activity. there you go, you could see it rolling through the washington area. watch it develop, that line during the evening hours and off to the north and east it goes. now north and east of new york city. the apparent area of low pressure right here now. you can kind of see it there spinning. even with the mild temperatures, not sure it is going to feel that warm. 63 the forecast high. becoming sunny, windy and warm out there. i mentioned the winds gusting to about 45 miles per hour this afternoon. tomorrow looks like a mostly cloudy day. high temperatures in the low to mid-50s. the weekend looks good. lots of sunshine for a second weekend in a row. a little cooler with high abouts 60 saturday helped cause a lot of the mess that we've got out on the roads. a lot of area wakes wake -- areas waking up in the dark. southbound # 70 already 270 here. just north of university, we have trees and wires down across the highway there. eastbound 50 at goshen, we've got highways down. this is a live shot of traffic now coming inbound on the dulles toll road. we've been talking about this all morning long. there was structural damage that was done to the overpass at beulah road as a result of yesterday's accident activity in the afternoon rush hour. they are making those repairs as we speak. the right side of the road is blocked but already a slow go coming in from before hunter mill trying to work your way out towards the beulah road overpass. we have delays on 95 out of dale city and traveling downtown, massachusetts avenue at observatory circle, that is tied up with a tree down. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. take a look at this. last winter's snowmageddon that gripped the d.c. region. it turns out that word that originated here made an impact. the global language monitor announced snowmageddon was the seventh top word of 2010 in its annual survey of the english language. spill cam from the oil spill topped the list. these are other words that made the list. there is your new vernacular for the year. wall street took a tumble over the financial health of ireland and china. we'll have our business beat on the other side of the break. x let's talk a little business now, a big slum op wall street and blackberry gearing up for a battle against apple in the tablet wars. let's join ashley webster from fox business beat with our business news this morning. we can only hope that futures are up ever so slightly after what happened yesterday. >> they are but i think there will be more downward pressure. to use one of the in words ark shellacking, pretty accurate description of what he with awe yesterday. the dow off by 178 points and we saw the s&p and nasdaqing about 1.5%. it was the old one-two punch, concerns about the chinese government reining in their economy and the effect that that will have around the world but also this irish debt problem. today, the imf and eu will be meeting with irish officials to figure out whether or not a bill outis needed to help prop up the irish banking system but that is causing concern and worries about other eu economies such as portugal and spain. that put a little shiver through the spine of the markets yesterday and we saw quite a consolidated selloff. just 23 of the 500 stocks in the s&p, for example, actually managed to make head way. at the end of the day, hoped that gm may be able to generate $12 billion. the taxpayer helple bail out gm last year to the tune of $50 billion. some of this will go to pay back the taxpayer. for the government to get its money back, they would have to sell it at $43 a share. it is a good start, as they sai. -- as they say. the demand for these shares is very high. gm has had a good year. things are turning around but they have a lot of money to pay back to the taxpayer. >> remember the old days when apple and blackberry just fought about cell phones. what is going on in the tablet wars? >> the good old tablet wars. apple's ipad, we all know about that. it has been very successful. research in motion, rim, which is the maker of the blackberry will be uneventualing their tabbette probably if the first quarter of next year and it will be called the playbook. the ceo says it will be three to four times faster than the ipad. he apparently has an example of this that he posted on youtube. this is an ongoing verbal battle between these dumps. steve jobs said don't even worry about it. it will be dead on arrival. it doesn't have enough apps. rim fired back and said apps are just a poor substitute for web browsing and so on and so on. this battle goes on. they will have to go a long way because rim says apple tells people number of things. we'll be looking at freedom watch and founding out how much of the tax cuts or tax spending i should say is needed. wouldn't it be better to cut spending rather than raise taxes. today. showers and thunderstorms, that was the first part after the day-long rain yesterday. the frontal system came through and with it, some gusty winds along with the thunderstorms. you can see the showers now racing off to the north. the worst of the activity now north and east of new york city. it will be a bright and beautiful day around here. we'll have a left sunshine just with an area of low pressure off to the north and west continuing to deepen. our winds are really going to wrap up. we have to look out as mentioned for the very gusty conditions around here during the course of the day. here is the other good spot. temperatures are very mild. you will step outside. it feels kind of tropical outside. 59 in ocean city. 57 in fredericksburg. our average daytime high is only 57 degrees. we are almost there. it is not even 7:00 in the morning yet. becoming sunny and warm. that is the bright spot in the forecast. it will be windy and we do have a wind advisory that goes into few minutes. with more storm coverage now, a lot of debris left scattered across the roads this morning. >> including high water too. so you are going to want to proceed with caution this morning. sarah simmons joins us live. she is in early -- she is some arlington where we've been looking at video of a huge tree that came down over the power lines. >> we do have crews. we have seen dominion power has been out here trying to assess the situation. the tree crew has not been able to get in here quite yet. that wit be after dominion does everything it needs to do through here. this is blocked off. it is george mason drive blocked off between 15th and 16th treat. both in north and southbound lanes, it is totally closed off here because the storm that rolled through this morning with lots of wind and lots of rain, maybe a lot of people in the area heard it. it has done quite a bit of damage. they will have to get in here and do a lot of work. you can see how much damage it did do. it even snapped a power pole here. this will be quite a situation throughout the morning commute. they are telling us this is definitely going to have an impact the entire morning. so again, george mason closed between 15th and 16th street just north of washington boulevard. now, let's take a look at the numbers. there are power outages due to this storm. pepco is reporting 1500 customers without power. dominion, just in northern virginia alone, just over 3,000 customers. bge is reporting over 13,000 customers without power. that number has fluctuated throughout the morning. as they have told us, they are trying to get other neighborhoods back on that sometimes they do have to take power out to others. so they are continuing to work on it and we will keep you updated here. of course, let's see what the latest is throughout the area. we'll go to julie wright now with the latest on your on-time traffic. >> we are seeing what you are seeing in a lot of places around the area. not only there along george mason drive but 50 at goshen road, we have a utility pole down and a water main break in the same area that we are dealing with. that is tied up because of trees and wires down across the highway. we have a portion of massachusetts avenue blocked off near the observatory circle because of trees and wires down. rhode island avenue between 4th and 12th street, that is blocked off and again, because we've got a tree down across the highway. arcola avenue north of university avenue is shut down way tree. for those coming from montrose road headed out towards the traffic. the latest now on the chandra levy murder trial. fate of the man accused of killing her rests in the hands of the jury now. in just a few hours, jurors will dillwyn deliberating to see died if ingmar guandique killed chandra levy in rock creek park nine years ago. the jury must make a decision with little evidence. there is no dna connecting guandique for the murder and there are no eyewitnesses. however, prosecutors say levy's death fits the pattern of other crimes guandique committed in 2001. attorneys made their closing arguments yesterday in the trial. prosecutor amanda federal kidnapping charges and ununlawful transportation of a minor across state line. smart testified that mitchell raped her and forced her to marry him in relynna laious ceremonies. if convicted, , mitchell could spend the rest of his life in prison. new details emerging in the prince george's county corruption scandal that has resulted in the arrest of jack johnson, his wife and nine other people. it was said that wiretaps caught a prominent liquor store owner and his wife discussing bribes to public officials and even an immigrant smuggling operation. they are being detained awaiting reporter: mary hamlin is some somewhat of an expert on home funds. >> it is very flexible and it is designed intentionally to be flexible so communities can identify where their biggest needs are. so it can be used to rental housing. it can be used for home ownership. it can be used for new construction. the beauty is very little of the money is set aside for just administration and concrete dollars for housing. >> home program money has been used effectively in prince george's for renovations at places like these aging apartment buildings and $1 million was also put towards the senior citizen housing center built by the jericho church in landover. neither project is tied to the corruption case in prince george's county. however, according to the department of housing and urban development, hud, most of the federal dollars are wasted in prince george's. quote, over the past 10 years, the county has expended only 58% of the home funds it received said a hud document t continues to say that the agency met on numerous owe indications with county officials trying to sort out whatever has gone wrong with managing the program. hud goes on to say prince george's has been among the worst performers in the home program which includes over 600 jurisdictions nationwide. according to federal authorities, part of what is wrong is public officials such as the recently arrested jack johnson have been accepting favors in he favors in -- in exchange for these federal housing dollars. >> these help people living paycheck to paycheck and that the rental burden is so high that it is a decision between buying food for your kid and paying your rent on time and somebody to be misusing those funds also tragedy. marijuana possession charges have been dropped against the weather guys. tony perkins and i put our big heads together to answer your most pressing questions, weather-related or otherwise. today's question is a great earth science question. of a been fascinated by it. i knew a little bit on the subject but just good stuff. this is from donna who asks, is mount st. helens a mountain or is it a volcano? you remember mount st. helens, the anniversary of its most recent eruption was earlier this year. it was the 30th anniversary of mount st. helens so quite dramatic, traumatic event in the pacific northwest. i want to answer that question first and then we'll get on to the rest of the questions. she wants to know what is the difference and do all mountains erupt or are all mountains capable of erupting? good question. >> it is. >> do you guys know the answer? >> she seems to think it is maybe a mountain. >> you're in class. get ready. mount st. helens is both a volcano and a mountain. it is a volcanic mountain. it gets to be both. there are a lot of instances of this around the world. but, get this, many volcanos are mountains but not all mountains are volcanos. >> you are either a volcano or not. let's talk quickly plate tectonics. i remember watching mount st. helens erupt. that ash made it all the way to the east coast, by the way. we are talking plate tectonics here. as the plates on the earth's crust get pushed together, that causes upheaval, erosion. that is what forms most mountains. volcanos are formed from an entirely different process. that is tapping into the mantle of the earth, the magma, which is super heated lava when it reaches the earth's surface. that process of that lava being pushed to the earth and having a chance to cool creates volcanos. so it is an entirely different process. >> so how do you get something that is both like mount st. helens? >> what happens is the mantle escapes to the earth's surface and weak'ss in the earth's crust. it finds places where there is a weakness in the earth's crust. there is often weaknesses along mountain ranges. >> gotcha. >> so it found a weakness there at mount st. helens and therefore -- it was awe mountain first. >> it wasn't created by -- >> well, both processes created mount st. helens. >> can any mountain just blow its top and explode? >> absolutely not. that is the answer to the question. you are very safe. if you want to go to the appalachians, no problems. the last mountain to blow there, about 120 million years ago. >> that was a very good question. >> they come in many shapes and sizes. many volcanos aren't necessarily
