I want to show you weve had rain or a wintry mix breaking out across the area in the past couple of hours. Punk you see is indicating our radar is doing the best it can to indicate where were likely getting that mix of sleet and freezing rain, even some snow mixing in and then snow out to the west and right through the district and points east, it is literally along 95 there and east. It looks like it is just all rain but even rain doesnt make for a pleasant morning commute. This will be with us for the next several hours. Temperatures are very marginal. Were right there close to the freezing mark. So it is possible you can encounter some slippery spots particularly if you are coming in from the west. Ill let julie talk more about the traffic here in just a moment. 34 at reagan national. 33 at dulles and bwi marshall. Parts of the area are below freezing. Do be wary that you could encounter some icy spots particularly north and west of town. Those are your advisories. All the pink you see is a winter storm warning. The red, blizzard warning. We have a couple of tweets coming in there talking about the cars that have been parked overnight getting a light dusting of snow at this point. No issues to report on the top stretch of the beltway leaving college park headed around past colville road. Eastbound 66 coming in from front royal, haymarket headed in towards manassas. Waking up to the wintry mix. The closer you get to the capital beltway the more you will find its just rain. Thats a check of your fox 5 ontime traffic. Our big story this morning, that major winter storm we are talking about. Luckily, the d. C. Region will scrape by on this one. Our neighbors to the north will not be so lucky. States from new york to maine are getting ready for the worst Case Scenario with forecasters predicting record breaking accumulations in some areas. People stocked up on food and gas while snow crews got ready with their plows with sand and salt. New york city could see a foot or more but areas like boston could get more than two feet. The storm is already causing big travel headaches at last word, more than 3,000 flights nationwide had been canceled. Officials warn people to stay off the roads. Com to find out more about that. A maryland mother is facing charges that she murdered her 2 yearold. Police say chelsea boot has confessed to smothering her daughter. They believe she put the toddlers body in a dumpster at their apartment complex in annapolis but investigators have not found it. Her friends say she has a 4 yearold daughter. Secret information in the chandra levy case is going to stay secret for a while. A d. C. Judge ruled that the information will remain sealed until at least april. Prosecutors apparently learned new information in the case and met with the judge on december 18th but little of that hearing was on the record. Lawyers for Ingmar Guandique are privy to the information and want it released to the public. Their appeal was denied yesterday. He is serving a 60year sentence for killing levy. A strong aftershock measuring 6. 6 rattled the sole mob islands overnight and it is slowing the relief efforts to villages that were destroyed by a fivefoot tsunami. We are just getting pictures of the damage from wednesdays powerful 8. 0 earthquake. It affected 6,000 people in 15 villages. Most are now homeless. And it killed nine people including a small child. Now to the developing manhunt in california where police are searching for one of their open. After they say 33yearold Christopher Dorner shot and killed three people including a Police Officer and a former officers daughter. Detectives say he wrote in a facebook posting that he wanted to kill cops because he was fired from the force back in 2008. Dorner is a former navy marks man who says he will use his training to avoid capture. Dorner is to be considered armed and extremely dangerous. He knows what he is doing. We trained him. He was also a member of the armed forces. Dorner was dishonorably discharged. Investigators think he may be hiding in the mountains outside of los angeles but the search has expanded to several other states and even mexico. Allege the prank phone calls led to serious charges for a 12yearold boy in california. Police say he called 911 in october claiming armed men were inside the home of ashton kutcher, the actor. Now, a week later, a call reporting an emergency at a Los Angeles Bank proved to be a hoax. Police say the practice of making hoax calls which often target celebrities has become popular. Setting up pretty much as we thought here way wintry mix literally to the north and west of 95. That is the pink and white you see. The white indicating some snow falling. The pink that wintry mix that is occurring just to our west here. So as you get out towards potomac, great falls, were getting that mix and then a little further west out toward leesburg, dulles reporting some light snow at this hour. Winchester reporting light snow. For the rest of us, generally just rain although there are likely some pockets of sleet. See the yellow you see here down towards la plata pushing up through southern maryland. That is likely some sleet. So what is happening is were getting some cold air mixing in with our storm and at least temporarily, you will see some sleet fall. Just because youre south or south and east of the city doesnt mean you wont see a bit of a wintry mick this morning. Primarily for you, it will be rain. This whole system will be with us for the next several hours whats happening, a onetwo combination. We have some storminess off to the north and west. This will move into the coastal low and energize it. That is why were expecting the big explosive low here off the eastern seaboard of the United States later this afternoon and tonight. Still taking shape. Can i see the parts havent come yet together but we call this phasing. Once that takes place, well have this big blizzard which is going to take place from new york up to boston so close call for us although we are not going to be dealing with the brunt of it. For us today, wintry mix eventually transitioning over to rain for methamphetamine of us with the exception. Our viewers well out to the west. Well stay a wintry mix for a good part of the day. I think by late this afternoon, we may get a bit of a break and we might see a few snow showers or snow flowers later tonight as we get the wrap around moisture as the storm really winds up off to the north and west. Again, that wintry mick is what is going to be accompanying you on your drive in to work. So depending on how far south you are coming in from stafford, it is definitely snow covered. We are getting reports of that snow covering the park cars an even some of the overhead signs out in the area of leesburg. So allow extra time there as well. Especially nurse out on route 7. That long and winding road gets slick if it is just rain out there. Cannot encourage you enough to slow down and tack on extra time to that drive. This looks wet as you continue inbound towards the capital beltway. Sound on 270, incidentfree leaving germantown headed south past 118. So far, no issues reported on the top stretch of the beltway between New Hampshire avenue and colesville road. Northbound at gower house road, authorities tell me they are checking identify stalled car in the right lane. Thats a check of your fox 5 ontime traffic. A dad in georgia has a special story to share. He helped deliver his baby girl in the parking lot of a gas station. Ive been in the delivery room three times and that is a huge deal. Its miracle. Foxs reporter with no final to wait, they jumped into the familys suv to go to the hospital. But they only made it two miles down the road. I told him to call 911. Reporter the 911 operator told them to pull into the shell station and paramedics with meet them here. The ambulance was on the way to the shell station to meet the family. But the baby had no plans to wait. So it was up to the dad and a 911 operator on the phone to deliver this baby. The baby is coming. Okay. When you have your wife screaming and your 3yearold next to you and you are trying to listen on the phone outside and you look around and youre like im in a shell parking lot. Brandon followed the instructions of the 911 operator. Bran dork im here to help you. Do you see any part of the baby. The head is out. Seconds later, the ambulance pulled up to take care of christy and baby bryn. Congratulations. Days later, as brandon listened to the 91 tape, he was overcome with emotion. It was really intense. I dont think well get much of a break until 11 00 this morning whether we start to see warm air surge up. Heavy rain down into salisbury and ocean city. That heavy rain will continue for you. You could be looking at several inches of rain as this storm cranks up over the next several hours over the lower eastern shore. Blizzard conditions off to the north and east. Connecticut, rhode island, eastern massachusetts, they are hearty up there but not sure they can handle 2 feet any better than we will. There is the Winter Weather advisory locally. Now includes Montgomery County, Howard County, maryland, Loudoun County in virginia. We are looking at perhaps an inch, perhaps 2 inches of snow. We know everybody is experiencing Different Things in different parts of the region. So just want to make sure we do know that. Rain closer in way little bit more of a mick as you head further out west, right, tucker in this one is kind ever hard. It is different in all parts of our region. Yeah, it is coming together pretty much as we expected here. Generally, as you get north and west of 95, you will experience more and more of a wintry mix weve been forecasting here. Some accumulations now starting to be reported for our friends out on the west. One inch, maybe a slushy 2 inches in some spots. I think parts of the region particularly to the west, not talking about washington or south and east but out to the west where it is snowing, you might see 2, 3rbgs maybe up 3, maybe up to 4 inches. For all of us, it will be a miserable morning. You can see a live look. And we want to point out a couple of features here. Ping you see, that is this particular radars indication of where were getting the mix. So across Montgomery County here, much of Howard County, pushing down into virginia, the wintry mix is taking place and that is a combination of snow, sleet, temperatures here in some spots are at or below 32 so you could be dealing with freezing rain out on your windshield as well. And then snow out to the west. And the snow is coming down and it is enough to accumulate out on the roads. We are getting reports of lots of viewers that we have snow out to the west. The yellows you see, that likely indicating some sleet mixing in. You are not completely out of the woods of getting the wintry mix here early as the atmosphere is very tumultuous at this hour and it is being mixed up and that is why were getting reports of wintry mix even here south and east. The bottom line on the forecast today is eventually enough warm air will surge up to the north that most of the our local viewers should get just a light rain here by afternoon. But in the next several hours, a wintry mix and the snow will continue out to the west. Lets take a look at our next map. A lot going on here. Here will be our coastal low. Here is a secondary low. When this piece of energy gets slammed into our low here off the eastern seaboard and east of ocean city later this afternoon, a process called bombogenesis will take place. This will explode intensity and that is why were talking blizzard conditions from new york to boston later this afternoon to tonight. If you are traveling in that direction, you want to do it now. Later this afternoon, i dont think youll be able to get out there on the roadways up in new york and boston. 34 in the city. 33 in baltimore. But parts of the area still at or below freezing. Frederick, 32. The last hour, gaithersburg was 32 as well. Likely some slippery spots here out to the west. Particularly where weve got the snow covered roadways. Rain showers for us early. I think by the noon hour, it will be the east. Well probably be looking at just some clouds this afternoon. Here that is area of low pressure and it will continue to develop there. Very intense later this afternoon and tonight. Blizzard conditions expected up into new england and as that system winds down, a little wraparound snow for parts of the area here late tonight and winds really pick up. The wind are really going to howl later tonight and during the day tomorrow. Wintry mix, transitioning gradually to rain. Cold and breezy your daytime high. Much. Already had two separate accidents out here. Traffic is very heavy at this point because of the reduced speeds because of the visibility and because of the weather conditions affecting the roadway.
