>> reporter: well, wisdom, these three commuter jets nearly collided midair here at reagan national airport and the difference was just mere seconds. the "washington post" is reporting that this happened after air traffic controllers launched two flights right into the path of another plane that was landing. the incident happened at the airport on tuesday around 2:00 p.m. it is the latest mishap for the airport where a lone air traffic control are fell asleep last year allowing two planes to land blindly n this case, three u.s. airways commuter jets with 192 passengers and crew on board were involved and it came within 12 seconds of a collision. at the time, the post reports a number of planes were lined up to land but air traffic controllers wanted to reroute the approach to the airport because of shifting wind. somehow, that information apparently did not get passed onto everyone in the tower. so, instead, a plane was cleared to land from the wrong direction and then sent head-on into two planes that were taking off. the faa tells the post it is now investigating that plane landing here at reagan national. it dland safely and the other two planes did arrive at their destination safely as well. one federal official told the post, quote, this is a pretty big screw-up. back to you. >> thank you. prince george's county police are trying to figure out how a person in fort washington, maryland died. the body was found about 8:30 last night. at the moment, there is not much information other than this is a death investigation. we'll bring you the very latest as it comes into the newsroom. new developments following an apparent hit and run near a herndon apartment complex. police searching for a person of interest in the case have discovered a man's body. this all began with a woman found dead in the parking lot early yesterday morning police said they were looking for 32- year-old fitsum gebretatios, the own are of the car involved in the hit and run and the husband of the victim. yesterday evening, officers discovered the body of a victim in a nearby river and it does resemble gebretatios. they cannot say for sure until an autopsy is done. today marks the one-year anniversary since the disappearance of robyn gardner. the 35-year-old was last seep vacationing in aruba. her relatives want anyone with information to come forward and contact police. gardner's travel companion spent months in a prison but was released because prosecutors did not have enough to hold him. tiny car, big-time police chase. they ended up at the suspect's house. somebody is having a bad day. >> another one. >> another bad day. we are checking more headlines when we come back. if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own. if you've got a business, you didn't build that. somebody else made that happen. my father's hands didn't build this company. my hands didn't build this company. through hard work and a little bit of luck, we built this business. why are you demonizing us for it? midair. it happened over at reagan national tuesday and there were apparently more than two airliners involved. let's get the latest from sherry ly live at the airport with the latest on what happened. >> reporter: good morning. nearly 200 passengers and crew were aboard those three planes. two were taking off, one was landing and they came within seconds of a mid-air collision. the information coming from the "washington post" this morning. it is the latest in a series of mishaps at the airport. this case involved three u.s. airways commuter jets on tuesday around 2:00 p.m. at reagan national airport. there was some confusion apparently in the air traffic control tower and an inbound plane was cleared to land sending it right into the path of two flights that were taking off. based on the speed of the planes, they came within 12 seconds of a collision. the confusion apparently occurred at a time when the airport was switching the landing direction for planes due to shifting winds. apparently, the information did not get passed onto everyone in the tower and the plane was given the go ahead to land from the wrong direction. the faa now says that it is investigating. this is the same airport you may remember where last year, a lone air traffic controller fell asleep during an overnight shift allowing two planes to land blindly here. in this latest incident, a federal official told the post, this is, quote, a pretty big screw-up. back to you. officials are trying to figure out how a person in fort washington died. police say the body was found of interest, 32- year-old fitsum gebretatios, the husband of the victim. police say gebretatios is the owner of the car involved in the hit and run but they can't say for sure if he used the car to kill his wife. officers discovered the body of a man in a nearby creek and it bears a close resemblance for gebretatios but police cannot confirm the identity until an autopsy is done. today mark the one-year mark since robyn gardner vanished while vacationing in aruba. last night, friends and family members held a memorial service in her hometown of frederick, maryland. they want anyone with information to come forward and contact police. her travel companion spent months in an aruban jail but was release because prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to continue holing him. a call this morning for a stronger law after news that i crofton, maryland man accused of threatening to shoot up his former workplace in largo will end be charged with a misdemeanor. police seized about two dozen weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition from neil edwin prescott's apartment. the prosecutor vows to seek stronger legislation in the future. investigators in blacksburg, virginia are trying to find out whoever planted a pipe bomb just blocks from the virginia tech campus. the bomb went off just before 3:00 a.m. yesterday near several parked cars. investigators with the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms and explosives says an suv was targeted but they don't yet have any suspects or a motive. fortunately, no one was hurt and the atf says the explosion had nothing to do
