block of cold street in fairmont heights. investigators are not telling us exactly what led to the shooting. the man's injuries are said to be nonlife-threatening. now to breaking news overseas. taliban fighters attack a hotel in afghanistan. police say 17 people were killed in the 12-hour siege. five taliban insurgents stormed the hotel north of kabul armed with machine guns, rocket- propelled grenades and explosive vests. twelve of the dead are civilians including several hotel guards. all of the attackers were killed. university of virginia president theresa sullivan is calling for civility in the ongoing saga surrounding her forced resignation. sullivan announced she was stepping down about two weeks ago after leaders of the uva board told her they had enough votes to force her out. since then, the campus has been in an uproar. sullivan yesterday asked that people stop abusive behavior toward the interim president, members. the board and building on campus. members of the board will meet next tuesday to consider reinstating sullivan as president. jury deliberation are under way in the sex abuse trial against former penn state football coach jerry sandusky. day two is expected to begin later on this morning. shortly after jurors got the case yesterday, we learned shocking evidence. matthew sandusky, the former coach's adopted son, came forward saying his father sexually abused him years ago. because the evidence surfaced after the jurors got the case yesterday, they will not be able to respond to it. it was the deadliest crash in metro's history. >> three years ago today, nine people were killed when a red line train heading for the fort totten metro station collided with another train. fox 5's lauren demarco is live in northeast with details on how people are marking this anniversary. >> reporter: good morning. this mark the third anniversary of metro's deadliest crash, as you said. today, d.c. mayor vincent gray will come out to unveil a new memorial plaque to honor both the victims and the first responders. it is just over my shoulder here at the new hampshire avenue bridge which overlooks the crash site. following the crash, loved ones create a makeshift shrine but everyone acknowledges that was not a proper memorial. the plaque has already been placed inside the fort totten metro station but you need to pay to get inside to see that up close. mayor vincent gray is also manning a memorial park and garden for the future. you will recall two red line trains crashed on june 22nd, 2009 between fort totten and takoma park. the nine people killed included one train operator, 08 were also injured. the spokesperson for the national transportation safety board has said that since the accident, metro has been more receptive to its recommendations. we all know there are still problems from time to time. nothing like we saw back in 2009. metro has increased safety measures and staff since then. after that memorial park and garden, the plans are in the works. the family members were disagreeing with community members here because they wanted to create a park and guard innocent woods here behind the bridge. community member were concerned about crime and also issues with prostitution in the area and didn't want to encourage that. the city administrator has released a statement. he said: he said: we are hoping to hear whether mayor vincent gray has an update on that when he speaks later this morning at 10:00 a.m. metro has spent millions of dollars and several years working to make the fixes recommended by the released. what do they reveal about george zimmerman's story to police. we are checking more headlines coming up.  a mount rainier national park ranger dies while trying to rescue four injured climbers who fell on a glacier. yesterday afternoon, ranger nick hall was preparing the climbs are to be taken off the cascade range peak when they slid more than 300 feet. hall was unresponsive when rangers tried to contact him. when they reached him several hours later, he had already died. three of the four climbers were lifted off the mountain. one had to wait overnight while waiting out a severe storm. we are hearing george zimmerman's account of what happened on the night he shot trayvon martin. he spoke with police on the day after the shooting and told them his version of events. he says he saw martin walking around the sanford, florida neighborhood in the rain and that martin looked suspicious. after zimmerman called police, he says martin confronted him. >> then, when i got to peterson companies and m tb. m resorts to build a destination gambling center at national harbor in prince george's county still draws mixed reactions from county residents. >> i believe that most of to the area. >> reporter: if you would talk to the maryland legislature, what would you tell them? >> i would tell them to go for the casino. >> reporter: some members of the maryland house are also balking at the plan to expand gambling in the free state. the owners of the huge new maryland live casino at arundel mills who have invested hundreds of millions of dollars vigorously object it a plan that would draw some of their customers away. three members of a special study panel are balking at moving forward now with gaming expansion. prince george's county executive rushern baker is urging governor marten o'malley to ignore the dissenters and called a special session of the state legislature to pass a bill allowing voters statewide to decide gaming expansion at the ballot box in november. >> help us find new revenue. there is no way i don't think anybody can explain to the people of prince george's county why can't you decide on your open whether you want to get $69 million a year into your jurisdiction and why can't the citizens of the state decide what happens to revenue in terms of the gaming revenues that would be able to come in. >> reporter: there are a lot of moving parts to this picture. part of the deal to add a sixth casino in maryland is this. attacks get lowered on the other five and maybe all six casinos to compensate them for customer difficult use. some members of the house have said publicly after raising taxes on wealthy americans no way are they going to vote for giving a tax break to casinos. it is complicated. the governor hasn't yet said shooting of a man by one of their officers. this happened shortly after 1:00 this morning on cold street in fairmont heights. police say there were originally -- they were originally called to the scene for reports of gunfire. somehow, the officer and the man got into an altercation which led to the shooting. the man is expected to survive. the board of the university of virginia plans to meet tuesday to consider reinstating ousted president theresa sullivan. about two week ago, she was forced to resign creating a huge uproar from the uva faculty. yesterday, she got the support of former governor tim kaine who said it would be justice if sullivan got her job back. and the deans of ten of uv a's eleven schools road to the board urging sullivan to be reinstate. still, helen dragas doesn't appear to be backing down. jury deliberations are now under way in the child sex abuse trial against jerry sandusky. shortly after the jury got the case yesterday, some shocking evidence was released. matthew sandusky, one of jerry sandusky's adopted sons, came forward saying he was also sexually abused by his father. but because the case had already wrapped up, jurors will probably never hear about the new allegations. the georgetown man charged with killing his elderly wife will remain at st. elizabeth's hospital. a union ruled albreath muth is still mentally incompetent for stand examiner is trying to put a name with a face. they have unveiled facial approximations of three unknown people. here they are. all three were found dead in separate northern virginia locations between 2003 and 2011. their deaths are not related. now, in all, virginia has 220 sets of remains that are unidentified. some are dating back to the 1970s. medical examiner hopes releasing these fable models will prompt family members of missing people to come forward. >> well, our hope is that somebody will see these and say, you know, that looks like my uncle johnny or my brother john or whoever and that they will call us, either the medical examiners or the investigators working the case and they will come in and supply the buccal swab and allow us to match the dna. >> if family members do come forward, it will take less time to process the dna test. in the past, dna samples had to be sent to a lab in texas. and now they have the if he can knowledge here. i guess it would help solve a lot of three notches. mary ann rafferty explains the ropes behind moody's decision. >> reporter: moody's has lower the credit ratings of morning a dozen of the world's largest banks. >> these banks have been downgraded by another agencies. it has been expected. >> reporter: the move means it will now become more costly for banks to raise money by selling debt. >> goldman sachs, j. p. morgan chase, citigroup all got a two- notch downgrade. batch of america got a one- notch downgrade. >> some of the largest european banks were also downgraded. if i have teen batchs in all are seeing their ratings slashed. one financial analyst says the downgrades are not as bad as some people may think. >> some of these were not as deep as had been feared. we find that certain bank stock price were now moving
