showers and earlier, even embedded were a few thunderstorms. it looks like those are falling apart. you get the idea here. we are likely to see some rain showers across much of the area in the next hour or so. i think parts of the morning commute will likely be on the wet side. we'll get it out of here and we should get some clearing by afternoon. temperatures are mild. 61degrees in washington. 59 at dulles. get ready for a very warm day. the humidity will believe the enclose for the next few days as a warm front punching through. high temperatures in the low 80s. maybe 82 degrees by 5:00 good morning. right now, police activity is what is closing a portion of florida avenue at rhode island avenue. they've got the intersection blocked off right now. ongoing investigation there. new york avenue open for business. no problems to report leaving northeast to northwest. you will find lanes are open on the top stretch of the beltway trying to get past university boulevard and around towards georgia avenue. southbound 59 in good shape. no problems to report out of laurel. 29 traffic behaving nicely leaving randolph road headed back down towards the beltway. you will find lanes are open if you are traveling in virginia along 395 working your way past the pentagon and across the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. we are following some breaking news out of the district this morning. search is on for the suspects involved in two fatal stabbings. >> the first happened around 1:20 this morning in the 4500 block of coral street northeast. just an hour later in northwest d.c. another fatal stabbing took place. that is where melanie alnwick is live with the details. >> reporter: good morning. florida avenue remains shut down. we are here at florida and it looks like sixth street. it is also closed down at fifth street as well. d.c. police or district police starting to wrap up their investigation just a little bit. what we are told is that this was a stabbing scene. but when we arrived, take a look at what we found. we found a lamppost on the ground right in front of shaw's tavern. if you look a little further back under the street light. you will see that is the black bmw sedan that is crashed into the side of shaw's tavern. we don't know exactly what transpired here when the alert went out from d.c. police, we know that we were told the victim was found with a stab wound in the neck. it was an adult male victim. he was transported to howard university hospital and then d.c. police sources tell us that victim was pronounced dead so this is a fatal stabbing. we don't know exactly what transpired that led to the bmw being crashed into the side of shaw's tavern there. some sources tell us that they believe, again, not confirmed at this point, that they believe that the victim may have been trying to transport himself. may have been trying to drive to the hospital and at some point you can only assume was not able to maintain control of the vehicle. that is what we are hearing at this point. we are waiting for d.c. police command ers here on the scene to talk to us. all the tv stations here are waiting for them to come and talk to us to give us more information. at this point, it certainly looks like this part of florida avenue is going to be shut for some time. that is the latest we have here from northwest. back to you. back to you. other stories making headlines this morning, the search is on for two armed robbers who officials say staged fake car crashes to trap their victims. now, police have just released these surveillance pictures. the two separate incidents happened last month on jones lane at potomac, maryland. in one of them, the driver was allegedly assaulted, placed in the trunk of his car and taken to atms to get money. >> d.c. employees may soon see a little extra cash. d.c. workers were forced to take four unpaid days off raft year and the city council would like to pay back the employees for the lost time. e lost time. more details now on the battle between montgomery county schools and an atlanta newspaper. the atlanta journal constitution recently reported on several blue ribbon schools across the country where test scores got remarkably better in a short time. the article implied that there may have been sanctioned cheating at the highland elementary school in silver spring. that school went from the verge of a takeover to blue ribbon status in just three years. the montgomery county school superintendent is calling it irresponsible journalism. e jou national security becoming a campaign issue on the eve of the anniversary of the killing of osama bin laden. republicans and democrats are ciewtion etch other of d.c. council member could be on his way to federal prison. we are talking about harry thomas, jr. who will be sentenced on thursday for embezzling. >> the mayor still has not put forth any nominees to replace him. as matt ackland explains, one councilmember is done waiting. >> reporter: some believe, if there had been more oversight when it comes to ethics enforcement, hairy thomas' scam to steal hundreds of thousands of city dollars would have been cut off earlier. there was legislation drafted to put in place stricter ethical rules and a new board to enforce them. so far, she hasn't received a list of nominees from mayor gray to introduce emergency legislation to give the power to the council to nominate one person without delay. >> i will talk to my colleagues about how strongly they feel about having -- moving forward with some urgency and being able to have one of the appointments. >> council chairman kwame brown is also concerned about the delay but seemed to give the mayor a little slack on timing. >> leer i, you are always concerned that things aren't moving as quickly as possible. but at the same time, the executive has been reaching out trying to make sure that they have qualified after cants but more importantly that they are properly vetted. >> reporter: mayor gray's office says a list of strong nominees should be sent to the council soon but would not be this will roll through here for the next couple of hours. some sunshine and mild temperatures this afternoon. we are expecting highs about 80 degrees. a few flashes of lightning. cull and are some a -- culpeper had a thunderstorm. forecast for today, if you like summertime weather, you will love the forecast. 81 this affect and once way get the showers and thunderstorms out of here this morning, problems getting along new york avenue working your way past florida. however, there is an ongoing investigation which melanie alnwick has been reporting live from this morning. you will find that the eastbound lanes of florida remain closed off between fifth and sixth street. westbound open, eastbound remains closed. we'll hear live from melanie in just a few moments. lanes are open, no problems to report on the beltway leave being college park trying to get past university boulevard. traffic flowing freely now on the beltway between annandale and merrifield. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. we are following some breaking news out of the district this morning. police are investigating two overnight deadly stabbings. >> one happened on coral street northeast around 1:20 this morning. the other, an hour later at fifth and florida northwest. that is where we find fox 5's melanie alnwick. she is live there this morning with the details. good morning. at this point, police tell us they have no reason to believe that those two stabbings are related. here on florida avenue, police are starting to wrap up the investigate into the stabbing here. they have reopened the lanes, the majority of the lane here on florida avenue between sixth and -- fisk and sixth street here except for this area where police cars are still parked blocking off the scene where they had this incident. let's go to some of of the tape we shot earlier. the vehicle that you see there, we didn't realize when we first got on the scene. when we arrived, we found a light post that had been upended, and a vehicle that was crashed into the side of shaw's staff he were here at fifth and florida. police sources tell us that the victim was indeed deceased but he was transported to howard university hospital first where he then died. unconscious when he was first transported. it appears at this point, we're not sure, but d.c. police are telling us they believe that the victim was trying to drive himself to howard university hospital, the hospital and howard university hospital is just maybe half a block from right where i am standing. we don't have any information right now as far as a suspect lookout. we don't know if this part of the street was indeed the scene of the stabbing, if the vehicle was the scene of the stabbing but we just know that an adult male with a stab wound to the neck found dead -- found with a stab wound inside that black bmw that. car was just recently towed away by d.c. police and now they are working to -- we are seeing them -- they did go up and down the street with flash lights looking for bits of evidence and they ever a been with a shovel shoveling up what debris there is left over from the vehicle accident and putting that into a d.c. police car presumably to comb through that for evidence. now that they are starting to wrap up the scene, we believe that we should hopefully be hearing something from d.c. police in the never future that will fill in a little bit more of those details and questions for us. that is the latest here from northwest d.c. we'll get back to you as soon as we have updated information. >> a lot of think it is a good thing to know that, when you get hit in the middle of the night or when it is very dark and nobody is around, not to stop. >> crimesolvers is offering a $1,000 reward no information on either of these incidents. some good news for d.c. employees. they may soon see a little extra cash in their paychecks. in a meeting today, the city council is expected to discuss the possibility of paying back d.c. workers who were forced to take four up paid days off last year. the furloughs were ordered because the city thought it was facing a serious budget shortfall. but now, since times are better, some heeders want to return the money. >> -- some leaders want to return the money. >> clearly, i want it repay everyone. we taxed income on people. we had the municipal bond tax. we furloughed our employees. we cut human services. we put more red lights and speed cameras all over the place. we found a way because we had a deficit that we needed to take care of. i would love to give that money back. >> now, it will cost about $22 million to pay back the employees for the lost time. a former maryland gubernatorial campaign worker is on trial accused of voter suppression. prosecutors say julius henson was behind the robo calls targeting democratic voters telling them that governor mart martin o'malley had already won and they didn't need to go and vote. president obama says today's anniversary of the terrorist leader's death is time for reflection. the president pushed back on charges he is politicizing osama bin laden's death. he denied that his campaign is using
