ring. two of the people accused of participating live here in our area. stacey cohan is live with more on the accusations and arrests. good morning. >> reporter: this is quite a story. these are a series of apartment complexes behind me known as river plex. two of the people arrested in this massive operation lived right here. their names are zottoli and patricia mills. they lived in one of these apartment buildings. there were about a dozen people in total arrested in connection with what authorities are describing as an undercover russian spy ring. the group was actually dubbed the illegals and they were tapped with coming to the united states and assuming the identities of real american families. they received extensive training. some had children and were charged with mixing into the american community. now, the people that lived here were also accused of picking up russian money that was buried underground in new york city's central park. they face additional charges of money laundering. neighbors in arlington are stunned by this intrigue. >> i guess if i was a spy i would want to live here. you aren't really in the middle of d.c. you could blend in better. why not. >> it's unfathomable. not something that -- i know it happens, but unconscionable. >> reporter: now, apparently, this was a multiyear investigation. we have no indication of how long the russian spy ring was operating in the united states. ironically we are right near the location where president obama hosted the russian president in a round of hamburgers declaring that the two counties had found a way to build better bridges to trust. >> live in arlington, stacey cohan. back to you. the lawyer for five american men convicted of plotting terrorists attacks in pakistan filed an appeal. the men have been sentenced to 10 years in jail. their attorney says the conviction should be overturned because it didn't take into account evidence provided by the defense. no sign of two missing teenagers from fairfax county. today the girl's parents are expected to talk publicly about their disappearance. tiffany ghani and tram hoang are best friend. they were last seen at an apartment complex in tysons corner. they didn't take anything with them, not even their cell owns phones. in d.c., a case four years in the making comes to a head today. in 2006, robert wone was stabbed and killed inside the home of dillon ward, joseph price and victor zaborsky. no one has been charged with the murder but prosecutors say the three men know who did it and covered up the crime scene. the judge will decide their fate today. if they are found guilty, they face 30 years in prison. the confirmation hearings for elena kagan continue today. if confirmed she would be the fourth female supreme court of the worries. at rfk police are investigating whether one or more students hired for summer jobs took two iphones from employees. at h.d. woodson high school, one student is being investigated for senate. he got good news over the weekend announcing that he is cancer free. lautenberg was hospitalized in february after falling and doctors discovered he had lymphoma. he said after six rounds of community is shocked to learn that they have been living among suspected russian spies. a man and woman living in northern virginia have been arrested accused of being part of a russian spy ring sending confidential information back to their homeland. stacey cohan is reporting live from arlington. good morning. >> reporter: these arrests are part of a larger sweep. nearly a dozen people were arrested, not only locally but in new york and boston as part of what they called a long-term russian spy mission to gather information in the united states. we are in front of the river house apartment building. that is where two of the arlington based alleged spies lived. their names were michael zottoli and patricia mills. they lived in this apartment building as a normal american couple. we are told they even had children. that is part of what happened, according to the justice department documents, throughout the russian spy operation, that these individuals were to assume american life styles so that they could develop information. they received extensive training on american life-style and languages. the arlington residents are also charged with money laundering. the court documents claim that the couple traveled to new york city to dig up money that was buried, russian money buried in new york's central park. as you might imagine, folks in arlington are stunned by the news. >> surprising to hear that. i walk by people all the time in this building. i have been here a couple of times. concerned to think that it's possible russian spies. >> reporter: in coincidence difficult to ignore, last week president obama welcomed the russian president. the two dined in arlington a few blocks from the apartment complex. when the meeting was done, mr. obama declared that the two succeeded in building trust between their two countries. several of the alleged spy operatives will be in court today for the initial hearings. live in arlington, virginia, back
