We are going to have fun in a moment. But you just came back from a brilliant interview with michelle knight. The cleveland kidnapping victim. And tell us a little bit about that experience . Travis, thanks for asking about that. Michelle knight is one of the victims of the castro kidnapping in cleveland. She was the first taken and by all accounts was the most severely abused for 11 years wow. She has never spoken, and she decided that she wanted to tell her story and tell it to me. And i have to say, you know, there were three girls taken. There were three girls rescued. But only two girls went home, because she had no where to go. She had no family. She went to the hospital. There was nobody there. I mean, no visitors, no home to go to. [ adience oohs ] she is completely. Shes been the forgotten one. Everybody thought that she had certain incapacitations, that she wasnt mentally as equipped as others but boy, nothing could be further from the truth. This is a little firecracker. She is smart, articulate. And i think she has a will to live that is gonna sustain here. I do. [ applause ] you know, dr. Phil, one of the things that you understand, we do this on our show a lot, you have some really, really serious interviews and you have other interviews where i am sure you are sitting there thinking what in the world am i hearing right now . And in fact, rachel came up with an idea today. We will have a bit of fun. Tell dr. Phil about it. We will have fun. I see this coming. I see this coming. We will have fun, we will play a game called what is dr. Phil thinking . All right, i will play your game. What do you got . Lets look at a clip. This is of a mother of a famous family. Theyre in the news a lot for all of the wrong reasons. Why are we here . I dont know. [ laughter ] you know, tie your little shoes, like, you know, i am in my little tie and in my little shoes . What the hell does that mean. You have a mask. Its on video. You gallon back you will go back to that. Little shoes . Your feet have to be at least a size 13. At least. Theres nothing little there. I will tell you what i was thinking, honestly, i was looking at her thinking are you [ beep ] ing me . [ laughter ] [ applause ] i went to school 15 years for this . For this . Are you kidding me . [ laughter ] we have all been in that situation with patients where, someone will Say Something and we will say are they kidding . Or are they. If theyre not, are they on drugs . Are they seriously. You start looking around for ashton kutcher, am i being punked . [ laughter ] i have to say, i have to say, i actually stopped that interview half way through. She had a publicist and a lawyer there. I stopped that interview and i went and talked to them and said, guys, what are we doing here . No, no, shes good. Shes good. If thats good, what is impaired . Set will down. Set will down settle down. Inebriated on your show. At a heart level i think she is a very nice lady, i just dont think i have ever really met her yet. I dont. Who knows whether drugs, alcohol, bad day, i dont know. But you cant make sense out of nonsense. Get that thought bubble going, dr. Phil. We will take another look at a clip. This is of an angry motherinlaw. You said, she gave ty, psycho tropic drugs via his genitals. Thats how i believe she got it into his system because of the color of his urine. I think she gave him something, but the quickest way to get something into a man is through his penis. I want to be sure of this, the quickest way to get something into a man is through his penis . Because of the blood vessels. The fastest way to a mans heart maybe through the penis, but drug absorption . What were you thinking when she said that . [ laughter ] i was thinking, i didnt hear her right. [ laughter ] did you say what i just thought you said . [ laughter ] shes delivering psychotropic drugs through. What . [ laughter ] all of the things did that, did that really . Did you just say that . My mother always said it was through the stomach, feed him well. [ laughter ] nice mama [ laughter ] [ applause ] thats one way, too. And just to clarify, did you not administer psychotropic medications, through the genitals everyone. Look at this clip from dr. Phils show. You put that down. See what you are putting this kid through . Did he grow up believing that his dad would kill his mother . Yes, he did. How did he get this idea . By her saying accusations in front of him in on the phone. I was on the phone, and i said, if i did that michael would kill me. He overheard me saying that. What do you think a kid takes out of that, when hes little and hears it all of his life, cindy. What do you think a kid will take from that . I didnt say your dads gonna kill me. This is turning on me, you have no idea. You have no idea classic, what do you think . You have the blue card. You have to see this interview. This guy is a guy that wanted to talk to me so badly, that he drove from st. Louis to los angeles, to deliver me a box of evidence on his wife, because he believes shes cheating. He spied on her through the windows. He has stalked her. He got a pi, and you know what they caught her doing when they stuck up on the house . She was in the House Reading the bible [ laughter ] she was there at the house, reading the bible. 23 times during the interview i had to get up and stand between them. I said, you might bully her, but you will not bully her on my stage on my show. So you just sit down right where you are [ applause ] and that interview, actually, airs on dr. Phil, today and tomorrow whoo i think that was a case of me thinks someone might be protesting a little too much. Maybe hes the cheater . Let me tell you, you have no idea. I told him, my dad told me dont ever miss a good chance to shut up. I said, this is a good time for you to hide that. Shut up and big and tall and strong as you are, you used the blue card. Put that in front of him. Okay, so you told us all of these things you are thinking and i am wondering right now, what are you thinking right now . I am thinking that this. To me, is a great forum. I love coming here. I love the intimacy of this audience. [ applause ] we have the best audience [ crowd cheering ] [ applause ] and, um, i just, we just tape next door and you forget whats happening right next door, that theres another world over there. And i will have to say, i am very proud that my son created this show. [ applause ] by the way, you guys are doing great. I mean, you are doing great. The energy of the show is good. I watch it. Robin never misses it. She was working with you the other day, travis. Yeah. So, we are really proud of you. Two thumbs up. Two thumbs up. Dr. Phil, would you be willing to stick around . Sure. This is whats coming up. Coming up next. Aj appeared so happy to all of us, on the outside, but in reality, he was holding on to sad things inside of him. How bullying got the best of this young man. The teachers need to know what to do, educate them so they know what to do. And later. I have no hearing, clearly, so my vision is my 1 sense. It is my world. Marlee matlin and her struggle to saver had precious sense of save her precious sense of sight. Dont do what i did. Do not do what i did thats later its the doctors allnew november. Is it me or is it getting hot in here . I am having a hot flash right now. Complete with a full month much house calls nap time. Lets go, guys. Plus. After my second child, i was not able to feel anything during sex. And i am just kind of observing the walls of your vagina and cervix. Masters of sex, drs. Berman. And cancer risk is one of the biggest things and specifically skin cancer. They say doctors are the worst patients. I went for a routine skin check and my dermatologist recommended 4 moles, be removed, two years ago. And they say it for a reason. I am the worst patient because a i want to micromanage everything, and b i am a hypochondriac. I finally got the test everyones been telling me about. If you were to test positive, are you ready to hear that . See the doctors going to the doctors. You wont believe the stars participating in the celebrity gynologue. On the set of the doctors, q as. The doctors are taking over the set of et fasten your [ applause ] welcome back to the show. We are here today with dr. Phil, whos passionate about our next topic. Its an epidemic that seems to be getting worse rather than better. I am talking about bullying. Believe me its probably happening to someone you know right now. Over 3 Million Students are victims of bullying each and every year. And our next guest knows this alltoowell. Aj, was such an extraordinary child. He was so loving and caring. Aj was the most amazing son i could ever ask for. The nicest, kindest human being anybody could ever meet. At the age of 15, he confided in me he was gay. We accepted him for who he was. From that time forward, it was like the biggest weight was lifted off of his shoulders. After telling him i accept him for who he is, and it didnt make a difference, i remember begging him not to tell the children at school. He said, no, mom, its okay, my are all right with it. And for the first time in my life, i can be who i really am. And i am so happy. Aj decided to come out and let everybody know. He began to be flamboyant at school. People would walk up to him and call him gayj, and queer, and aj brushed it off like it was nothing. He appeared so happy to all of us on the outside, and in reality, he was holding on to sad things inside of him. July 27th, my husband and i left to go grab dinner. Aj decided to stay behind, we were less than 5 minutes away from the house when my 12yearold called me and said, mom, ajs hung himself in his closet. My husband said, you need to cut him down and he said, daddy. I cant do that. And he said, please, baby, you have to. You are the only one at home. You might be able to save his life. By the time i got here, he was laying on his floor, i could see in his eyes at that point that. He wasnt gonna make it. If i have any regrets in light of my sons passing its that i didnt kiss and hug my son in the last hours of his life. That i didnt grab him by the arm and tell him that hes the most important person in the world to me the worst thing a parent can go through. And sometimes even after the tragedy, the truge is even harder truth is even harder to hear. I read a js diary after he passed away, and, um, i realized he was hurting so much more than i knew. This is the entry in ajs diary from december 7th, 2012. And it starts off why me . Why is it always me . Why am i the only one . Or so it seems like i am the only one to be pissed on. Screw my life, i wanna die. End my life, leave this [ beep ]ing world, why did i get the cards i was delt . I wish i would just disappear and he even drew pictures at the bottom of the page of him hanging. This was in the months before aj took his life. It hurt so much to read this, because this does not sound like my son at all. [ sobbing ] sheryl bravely choins us today joins us today. We are sorry for your loss. Let me ask you something, have you allowed yourself time to miss your son . I cry every day, dr. Phil. Aj was my first born child and he was my only son. And i loved him more than anything [ sobbing ] but i have to be strong for my daughters and, um, you know, i found out within a few days of burying my son, they aming a baby. And that i am expecting a baby. I dont have a choice, i have to be strong for the baby and for my girls. The first person you have to take care of is yourself, you cant give away what you dont have. Thats true. If, and of course, everybody has beliefs about this, i have mine; but if there were somethig that you could say to your son right now, if he is listening to this right now, not as an activist but as a morges what would mom, what would you say to aj . I would say aj, i miss you so much and i wish you thought about this before you did it because you chose a very permanent solution to a temporary problem and these people in your high school, they wont be part of your life 10 years from now, they wont matter. And no matter how hard they hurt you, you will be happy one day do you forgive him . Oh, yes. Say that. My son was a selfless person, and despite the fact that i was shocked that he killed himself, i know it had to be very bad for him to do what he did. And he actually would never put his little sister in a position to have to cut him down from his closet. So i know it it to be very bad. Have you forgiven yourself . I am trying. I know its not my fault, dr. Phil. I know that i did everything i could for aj, and even if he hadnt done it when i went out to get dinner that he would have done it another time. But. But that baby grew inside of me. It was my job to were tect him. And i feel protect him. And i feel like i failed in a way and i cant help from feeling that way, i think its because i am his mom. You understand that was his choice. I can tell you, 35 years in this profession. Somebody decides to kill themselves, they can get it done and you cant build a fence high enough, you cant watch them long enough. If they decide thats what theyre gonna do, you gotta let him own that choice. And what do you want to see happen that hasnt happened so far . What will keep the next child from getting this result . Honestly, the first thing is i want the administrators to be held accountable. Theres no excuse for being an educator and not protecting the children in your class room. [ applause ] i want to say, we reached out to ajs school to comment on the situation and they provided this statement the district takes claims of bullying seriously and conducted an investigation into the situation regarding ms. Moores son, the claim of bullying caused ms. Moores son to commit suicide does not comport with the districts understanding of the facts. Theres a word in that statement that gets me hot. Theres a word and i bet you anybody in this audience, could guess what the word is that gets me hot and that word is at. Because it says, the claim that Student Bullying at Southeast Polk High School caused ms. Moores son to commit suicide is the problem we have here, a lot of this was cyber bullying, right . Yes. The fact that it happens among students off campus is no is not my job, is not an answer for that. Thats not an answer for that. And the fact that these teachers are gonna be held accountable, they need to be educated on what to do, what do you do . Educate them, dont just require them to do it, educate them so they know what to do. We will have a list on our website, signs to look for in your child, because there are physical symptoms of being bullied. There are things to look out for in terms of, if your child is doing the bullying, we will have a list on the website, www. Thedoctorstv. Com thank you again for sharing your story. We will be right back. Coming up next. My vision is my 1 means of access. And i need to depend on it a great deal because of the fact that i dont hear. Marlee matlin and the risky eye surgery she needs to save her sight. You are legally blind in the left eye. Later, how this father bullied his own son to stop him from bullying the kids at school. From a psychological point of view i think you were wellintended but seriously misguided. Thats later. And i have been having unexplained funky body odor, even down there, yeah. Surprising things that make you stink. As a gynecologist, i hear this all the time. [ cheers and applause ] golden globe and Academy Awardwinning actress, not to mention 4 emmy nominations for her work in television, deaf since 18 months of age, this actess actress faces the possibility of losing another sense. People know i am an actress, who happens to be deaf. I am a mom of 4, my life is really, really very, very full. My vision is my 1 means of access and i need to depend on it because of the fact that i dont hear. I knew i had problems with my vision, i procrastinated because partly, i was concerned about the procedure, because of the fact that i cant hear, i dont wannabe deaf and blind. So i am really glad that i am finally taking care of it. Hi marlee. How are you, darling . When did you start noticing the vision was going down hill in this eye . Two years ago. At night its been difficult. And walking down the street, i misstep. The cataract has formed and made the left eye, in addition to blocking a lot of the light and blurring the vision, its made the eye a lot more nearsight near sighted because as the cataract thickened, your depth perception is way off. So theyre gonna do a bunch more tests on your eyes now, in order for us to better characterize everything and verify the health of the rest of your eye. The first test, we will take a picture of the mackula, in the back part of the eye. Macula. a i will have you blink, and open your eyes wide. Blink, blink. Thats the sign you will be using for me . Yes. Blink, blink, open wide. This is taking a picture of the very front of her cornea, called endothel cell count. This is the third test. a this is one or better. Two. Two. P o g. Big cataract. This is most likely somewhat her editary. You are a good candidate for cataract surgery. Based on preliminary testing you are legally blind in that left eye . Legally blond . [ laughter ] legally blind. Will marlee move forward with the surgery . Yes, we were able to tag along. Today is surgery day, its something i have been looking forward to, simply because i have been procrastinating for so long. I think i am nervous because its about me not being able to hear during the procedure, when i could normally look at an interpreter, i cant. This is a laser station, the laser is looking of her eye and defining the anatomy of her cataract. Now, we are gonna do the ultrasound removal of the cataracts and the replacement of the new lens in its place. We will put in gel atinous material to maintain the a shape of the eye during the surgery. We are removing this mass, liquefying it a piece at a time. Having gotten the core of the cataract out, its like the pit of an avocado, we are now getting the pillp out from around pulp out from around it, it belike spaghetti behaves like spaghetti so we drag it out in strips. The only portion that remains behind is the cellophane membrane housing the lens, which will serve as a hammock for the replacement lens. Now, having taken out the whole cataract, i am cleaning the inner surface so that it cant later develop scar tissue. Next we are going to give her, her brandnew lens. We want her to look towards me, so lets see if this prompt works. Good, she picked it up. As the lens goes in, shes seeing the colors of the rainbow, and as it unfolds, her vision becomes clear. Next we seal the entry, it was tiny so i can use water pressure. No need for stitches or injections or patches. She will go home without a patch on her eye today. Marlee matlin is here, and after the break we will find out if the surgery was a success or if she needs other options, stick around announcer coming up. When he hit me, my left arm, went through his windshield. The tragic accident that left this man missing an arm. I got a new lease on life. The amazing gift that will change his life forever. And later. When he was doing what he was doing was bullying his own child. The controversial punishment this father gave to his bully son. Thats later closed caption its beginning to look a lot like Christmas Shopping is done we havent even decorated yet. Shop early with our new christmas ad match. Even if you find a lower advertised price later, well give you the difference on a gift card. Walmart. Ugh actually progressos soup has pretty bold flavor. I love bold flavors id love it if youd open the chute [ male announcer ] progresso. Surprisingly bold flavor for a heart healthy soup. Surprisingly bold flavor all november check in with the doctors on twitter and you could win 5,000, grab your phone and paper and pen, i will reveal todays check in. Tweet the doctors marlee vision 911 a lot of people know me as an actress a who happens to be deaf. My vision is my 1 means of access. Marlee, you have a big cataract. You are a good candidate for cataract surgery. Based on the preliminary testing today, you are legally blind in the left eye. Today is surgery day. You want her to look towards me . So lets see if this prompt works. Deaf since the age of 18 months, Actress Marlee Matlin has relied hugely on her vision to live her life, but recently she was at risk for losing her risk of sight. And we are here with her doctor who performed a surgery. She is here with us today, bring her out, please welcome Marlee Matlin [ crowd cheering ] [ applause ] nice to see you, welcome back nice to meet you, right . Jack is telling me. [ laughter ] nice to meet you. Jack, who we have all met before, [ applause ] so, marlee, we can assume by the fac that you just did this towards dr. Oseal, that everything went well . He is the rock god. Because of him, my vision is amazing it has 100 improved. 100 . My life is back [ applause ] my life is back marlee, you rely more on your sight than most other people, because you absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, i have no hearing. Clearly. So, my vision is my 1 sense. To be able to access the world, to be able to function, to be able to communicate, to be to be the mom, the person who works and drives to work. It is my world. My eyes. But you were delaying this. Yeah. And yet you are so dependent on it. [ laughter ] yeah. Bigtime. Big lesson was dont do what i did. Do not do and delay, which is what i did. [ applause ] you know, i heard the story, and doctor, i think more cataracts are somebody a little older. This is a young, young woman. Right . I am old. I am old. Actually , um, it runs in my family. Its her ed tarry. Is it hereditary, doctor . We used to think of cataracts occurring only in older people but a third of the patient that is we treat with cataracts are under the age of 60 and maybe a higher percentage than that. We are not exactly sure, if its environmental in the foods we eat, or if demands are greater, computers, driving cars at night, and so forth. Everyone remember, cataracts is the leading cause of blindness in the world. This is a big deal. So normally, light travels through the eye, because the contents of the eye are transparent and focus on to the retina. Someone with a healthy eye looks like this, where the lens in the eye would be transparent, such as this. But when this lens loses transparency, we develop whats referred to as a cataract and in that case, the lens starts to look more like this. And starts to blur the vision, and block a vision, causing some double vision, some loss of color saturation, and eventually can become so dense that all you can see is light traveling into the eye. We have a still. This is what you might see if you have a cataract. It depends upon the extent of that cataract. And of course it can lead to complete blindness, right doctor oseal . Yes, as it gets more and more treme, people extreme, people can have difficulty reading, difficult night vision, they turn on the lights to be able to read, they get a sense that somethings not quite right. I had the blurry vision, i had the inability to drive at night. Even to pick up kids from soccer. I mean, i had to depend on someone else to drive me. And i would trip a lot because i had problems with depth perception, too. And you know, if you feel any of these things happening go to see a doctor. Have it taken care of right away. Its really important, because what marlee said is true, if you wait a long time, you could develop other injuries, falling down the stairs, getting introa car accident. Into a car accident. Marlee, we are so glad you got it taken care of. Thank you doctor. And heres whats coming up after the break. I am glad i got a new lease on life. Thats what matters you are here. I love my family so much for having my back. I really do closed captioning provided by a calcium chew this decadent and sugar free . Closed captioning provided by new citracal sugar free chocolate chews. Giving you calcium plus d, in a tasty little package. Of course i had no idea what it was. I felt like my feet were going to sleep. It progressed from there to burning. To like 1,000 bees that were just stinging my feet. [ female announcer ] its known that diabetes damages nerves. [ cheers and applause ] when i was in nashville i made a house call to a charming couple who had a story to tell about misfortunate and faith. I wanna go back to that fateful day. You were done with work. Right. And you decided to walk home . Yes. I started out walking. And thats when i got hit. The car passed another car. And he couldnt get back in. You tried to move, he tried to get out of the way. But it was right there. And when he hit me, my left arm went through his wind shield, and it threw me 2025 feet, behind the car. When i first came to, the only thing i really wanted to see was my wife. This is my rock right here. When i saw him open his eyes, i went charlie, do you know who i am . And he went. And when he blinked and he blinked real hard, i said, you know, i love you. I said, if you do, blink your eyes and he went like this real hard. You are in the vanderbilt hospital, and you had a bad accident and you lost one of your arms. I looked at my arm, and i never freaked out. I said, okay. And she said, you are gonna be all right. I have been having unexplained funky body odor under my pits and my boobs and yeah, even down there. Surprising things that make you stink. As a gynecologist i hear it from my patients all the time. [ applause ] when one father found out his son was the bully, he assigned a controversial punishment that made headlines leaving some to say what he was doing was actually bullying his own child. Heres a picture of the punishment. See the sign . The sign says, i am a bully, honk if you hate bullies. And i welcome to the show the father who made that sign you just saw. You were called a bully for doing this . Yes, sir, i was. My whole thing is, i tried to teach my son a lesson in humility, you know, make him understand bullying is wrong. And i myself, was bullied, and in turn, i became a bully. And you know, so, you are damned if you do; damned if you dont. I would rather be damned for doing something than let my son inflict pain on someone else. From a psychological point of view, i can argue your case effectively. I really get it. I understand the logic behind it. I think you were wellintended, were seriously misguided. I think you dont ever hold a child up to public ridicule for behavior that they have done or something they havent done. And to stand that boy on a Street Corner and have people do hate honks at him standing there with a sign in front of him, is not even almost right. It is dead wrong now, if it were there or do nothing, that might be one thing but thats not the case here. There are a number of things can you do with that young man. I did everything. I did the grounding, took away the video games tv, hard labor, i had him write apology letters on top of apology letters. I have done everything, we researched and everything, we could possibly do. And the only thing that worked was this. When i grew up, i grew up in anaire when the parents would woop you era, when the parents woop you, didnt matter if you were on the street or at the house. It affected you more when it happened out in the street. When you get chastised in front of your friends it affects you more when its out in public rather than in the house. Things are not black or white, theres a shade of gray that occupies the big part of reality; which is, that, mostparents are trying to do the best they know how for their kids. Kids dont come with an owners manual. I have made tons of mistakes as a mom, because i thought at the moment i was doing the right thing for my child. I think you are clearly wellintended. You are obviously an involved dad. And i applaud you for that. [ applause ] i dont mean in any way to suggest that you are not a good father. I think this is just a bad choice. You probably made 100 good choices. He has two older brother joose. This was a bad one. Whats the best way to approach this, dr. Phil . There are a number of things that you could do to help build empathy and strength. You know, bullies act from the inside out. Not the outside in. They dont react to the kid or the circumstance; it comes from the inside out. When they are made to deal with those individuals as people, as human beings with feelings, then they tend to identify with them and theyre much less likely to do it. You know, they called aj, gayjay, and made fun of him. But i guarantee you, no one ws made to sit down to learn what was in that kids heart, nobody put them face to face, because when that happens, bullies tend to change their behavior. Thats a wellestablished pattern and fact. [ applause ] dr. Phil, thanks for joining us today. We appreciate it. We will be right back. Thank you so much. Appreciate it.
