ball lands a lot of folks going to be unhappy. we will see about that i am sure. governor o'malley gave another spin to the issue when he called the topic of gambling a silly bomb thrown into the final hours of general assembly's 2012 session, prince georges county executive, baker, good morning. good morning allison. >> would you say the issue is dead in prince georges county? >> no, what i hope is the governor will call a special session which i am sure he will to deal with the budget and other revenue issues and gaming is a revenue issue not only for prince georges county where we are looking to get $69 million a year from gaming but also the state. it is a matter of how the state and county deal with revenue deficits this is what i said to the governor and speaker of the house it is a legitimate issue we need to deal with, one of the best sites on the east coast, generate jobs and revenues for the county, and the state >> what was reaction to the choice of words from the governor saying it was a silly bomb being thrown around >> i think everybody was frustrated the last day of session i was down there trying to talk to people, we had come up with what i thought was a deal for all sides clearly there is an individual, in anne arundel county that didn't want a fixed site but i don't think one person should stop the state and county from bringing in revenue. if we are not going to put table games on the referendum and let the votes decide this is millions of jobs, millions of dollars for county and state i think it is an issue i will push them to put on the table when they go back into special session that way prince georges county doesn't have to make some of the critical decisions about people cutting jobs and cutting back on programs desperately needed. >> which leads to my bigger question, that doomsday budget if a special session is not called marylanders might see come this summer how does that effect your county in particular. >> we are the hardest hit, we will lose somewhere around $62 million a year. just imagine we just closed $126 million budget deficit, if we get any more costs to the county we have to start cutting people's jobs this is very critical to us, it also could have us lose our triple-a bond rating which we desperately need, to continue to have and worked hard to keep, so must be a special session but must include revenue coming back to county. now is it just a waiting game until the governor makes that call? >> it is i think it is what i've called on the delegation from prince georges county, to pressure the governor speaker and president of the senate to come back into session, include everything on the table the budget, certainly we have to deal with but also revenue issues, this is very important. >> let's switch gears i apologize we have so much to get to, you need to come in more often so we can take time with these issues we reported on the neighbourhood initiative this is targeting specific areas in the county can you tell us about this initiative. >> we are excited about the transforming neighbourhood initiative. six areas in prince georges county where we will focus, not only police and public safety health care, education, all of the government -- all of the things we have to bare in government will be in these areas to turn them around we will stand in these neighbourhoods until they are turned around that way all of prince georges county is lifted up economic development, like i said health care, infrastructure, improvement, targeting but that has never been done before on a consistent basis this is a policy. >> viewers are seeing at home the spots that the county executive looks to improve. one more thing to get to, triple 911 accreditation what does that mean for the county >> only five jurisdictions in the entire world, have triple accreditation and prince georges county is one of those and it means our 911 system, is the highest it could be in both fire, homeland security and police it means our men and women at the 911 center do it better than anybody else we are proud to have it only five in the nation, or in the world that have it, and we are one of them, people from japan, and across the world will be coming to prince georges county, to look at our 911 system we are very very proud. >> what can residents do to help. >> one thing they can do is we are about to start a 311 call where we can direct some of those calls that now go to 911 to the 311 call, and that way free up the lines for these men and women so they can take urgent calls and get them out as quickly as possible. that would help also in our limited time i would like to say thank you for showing our children at flowers high school in their production. >> aren't they fantastic. >> they are. so we are very excited. >> lots of good things happening in prince georges county and with the initiative program you are looking to make sure that continues. >> yes, i am. >> please come back and talk to us especially on the budget issue as it progresses. >> we will thank you for covering it. >> indeed, prince georges county executive baker tony over to you. last year was one of weather extremes a deadly tornado outbreak and east coast earth cake, now key government agencies are teaming top make sure you have a plan in case it happened again joining us now from the headquarters of federal emergency management agency, craig and jack hayes director of noasas national weather service we are talking to you on a day where we are seeing wealth extremes yet again with snowfalling in portions of the mid-atlantic, tell us first jack, tell us a little bit about what this event is all about. i understand it is the first time although it seemed to me i have heard of these preparedness weeks happening before am i wrong? >> no, this is the first national preparedness weather week. in the wake of last week's deadly tornado outbreaks our forecasters did a pretty good job detecting and warning americans but we still lost over a thousand americans due to severe weather last year we decided to get together with fema and other parts of the federal government, state and local communities to see if we could effect a better outcome, significantly, reduce the loss of life. this severe weather awareness week is designed to get people to recognize the threat and prepare in advance, effective plans to protect themselves. >> we did see just two weeks ago again how the warnings helped save lives with another tornado outbreak, craig can you tell us what are mistakes most people make when weather emergency of some type of emergency is occurring. >> things such as driving in severe weather, not getting out of cars and going somewhere safe, not being ready and you know, very common tornado warnings issued people are going outside to see if they can see the tornado we want people to take steps now to get ready make sure you know what your risks are have a plan, and then when warnings are issued you know what to do again, a lot of times people -- how many times have we heard even in this area, flash flood warning, people driving through the water and rescue has to get them out of that stream. stay out of your vehicle get off the road. >> we see it time and time again you gentlemen have items in front of you i guess for an emergency kit, can you tell us what you've got. >> sure my end i will let jack talk about radios again make sure you have the things you will need if power goes out home is damaged more importantly you need to evacuate, probably one tip we really know, with everybody all their mobile communication devices trying to stay in contact make sure you have your chargers in your emergency kit, to ings charged. >> i might just demonstrate this is a noa weather radio one of the ways we get warnings out within seconds of a forecaster pushing a button on the warning it covered 98% of america, every school across the united states is outfitted with one of these it will get the warning to you at night, daytime an alarm system for your county, that you can tune and it gets word to you there are various other methods, weather.gov, crawlers on tv, radio, cell phone technology has various ways that it is getting the word out. i think back to the results that we produced in january, 2008 when a f-3 tornado hit a school with 2,000 teachers and school children in it and that warning through noa weather radio got there 40 minutes in advance as a result there was not one loss of life, three minor injuries. >> that is extraordinary we are showing on screen some weather preparation tips people should have including, have a plan not just for yourself but for the neighbourhood, school and office and you recommend people conduct family or even office severe weather drills, right? >> absolutely. i think be a force of nature by that we mean not only prepare yourself and monitor and act yourself, but motivate others to do the same thing to recognize risks to have plans and then monitor and be prepared to act immediately when that warning comes out. >> we thank you for your time to talk about this it is very important we can certainly see emergency situations, at any given moment. jack hayes, director of noas national weather service and greg, director of fema. should mention quickly, we also have our ap, our weather ap now, and you can sign up for alerts as well. so that for your smart phone or your ipad or what have you, tablet you can get that too. >> more information the better. >> yep. >> all right holly morris at charles herbert flowers high school in spring dale maryland this morning. >> they are having a two day encore performance of their music production, soul train to mo town this weekend holly good morning. >> okay, tony, ask and you shall receive. i've got, two tickets for friday s two tickets for saturday, which night do you want. >> i will take saturday. >> all right. they have yours. >> thank you. >> and we will talk about my processing fee later. let me tell you, these are going fast, and this is actually an encore production, they have done two weekends already but they have been so successful people wanted more and they are getting it and that makes someone really happy, if you happen to be sanding to me right now, -- standing next to me right now the principal of this school. >> how proud of you of these kids are you. >> words cannot explain it. >> we got these two tickets for tony you told me after the last hour phones were ringing off the hook. >> off the hook thank you channel 5. thank you fox 5. >> thank you for letting them share their talent with us. let's talk about when you first saw this show what did you think. >> there she goes again i have a fantastic drama director. absolutely dedicated, passionate, what can i say. >> and beautiful kids. they give their all they have been doing this since october it is fantastic to see it coming together. you know, unfortunately it seems when things get cut in schools, it is the arts program you've seen what arts does for these children. >> i have music, dance drama our kids are so talented they are really talented and this is the way to keep them interested. to just let them use that talent. academic absolutely necessary. but they have talents they must be able to display. this gives them an audience, this gives them the opportunity and with parent involvement, and community involvement what can you say. >> a little birdie told me you are retiring this year. >> the little birdie sang the right song i will be you know, there comes a time 45 years you know what i mean. >> no way you have been in this 45 years. >> i have been in this business 45 years. >> wow what are you going to miss the most?
