in the gay rights movement has died. he launched some of the first protests by gays and lesbians in front of the white house in 1965 his family says he died of natural causes he was 86 now the president of the human rights campaign released this statement last night, it says frank led an extraordinary life, marked by heroic act simple. from his early days fighting institutionalized discrimination in the federal work force he taught us gay is good. joe joins us now with more reaction and reflection. nice to see you. in fact, he came up with the phrase, gay is good back in the time when a lot of people didn't think that was true. >> true. true. yeah, you know he was a harvard educated, phd in as electron my worked in -- astronomy and worked in the u.s. army map office and was fired for being gay he lunched a one man crusade to right that injustice here we are so many years later, accomplished so much but standing on his shoulders. in fact i was reading he thought it was ironic the same government who let him go all those years ago honors and holds him up and sees what a pioneer he is. absolutely on the day that the president signed the bill to repeal don't ask don't tell frank was right in the front row in a seat reserved for him i notice you showed earlier footage of the president signing the executive order that extended benefits for lgbt federal workers frank was by his side when he signed that order as well. >> for those not familiar with his life's work can you tell us about his characters? how hard he fought the fought. >> harder than anyone i know he really taught all of us that the greatest tool, greatest resource we have in terms of moving the hearts and minds of the american people is to live our lives out and open and proud and celebrate who we are, tell the stories of our lives, to stand tall and to make sure that people know us for who we are, and in that, people come to understand the circumstances of our lives and as you said, in -- as you mentioned the phrase, gay is good, that we not just be tolerated but come to embrace the diverse fabric that is america. >> divine plan he died on national coming out day. >> appropriate. >> he might be happy with that timing. i saw him last week at the hue happen rights campaign annual -- human rights campaign annual dipper where the president spoke he was right there headlines going into a political year about things the community would like to see changed or maybe put on the forefront perhaps. >> it is interesting as most people know we are moving in the direction of full marriage equality, state by state across this country and yet, as we reflect on frank and his act simple and hero imp and the fact he was fired all those years ago simply for being gay it is important to remember in 29 states across this country it is legal to be fired from your job for being gay or lesbian we have a lot more work to do in these elections we want to hold on to as many supportive elected officials as we have and perhaps add to those ranks to continue the work frank spear headed so many years ago. the president of the human rights campaign thank you so much. the live shot moments ago, not a bad start to the day >> i would agree with you. >> thank you take a look we will show you what is going on start with sentinel radar, with this you can see scattered showers here and there areas in green you know how it works by now, seeing showers across eastern maryland and also seeing showers off to our west not much happening around the washington area currently, regan national not reporting rain at the hour. district, belt way, nothing here, a few showers across chesapeake bay east of maryland and seeing rain this morning around the front royal and points south ward as well. let's pull this out, this will be a day long event, as we will continue to see areas of rain push through, got an area of low pressure bringing a lot of precipitation to the eastern united states ohio where we will see areas of heavy rain, ohio, west virginia, in the mountains of virginia where the heaviest rainfall will be from this system and down to our south, more of this in as the morning and day progresses. >> let me show you a surface map, i mentioned low pressure, going to move along a frontal boundary pretty much a stationary front out to our east as it does it brings us reinforcing rains to our region the other thing it does do is bring us breezy conditions winds out of the east, 15, 16 miles an hour be aware of that and partially because of that a coastal flood advisory in effect for parts of the region. >> forecast washington for today, cloudy skies, rain showers likely, 67 degrees for your high today, tonight more clouds, more rain showers georgia avenue a 25 minute ride for those coming southbound 270, you can see nothing but brake lights nothing but red on the map coming from erbana to montrose road an hour and twenty minute commute, you will find in virginia accident activity northbound 7100 as you travel under 66 that is what is tieing up the left side of the roadway. that accident we mentioned before eastbound 66 pulled over to the shoulder before 23, at nutly street. julie thank you very much eight leading gop candidates trying to out do one another this time in new hampshire. for me ditails let's -- details, let's debate it. jim and also peter is away we are happy to welcome david brown welcome jim always a pleasure to see you what did you think last night jim who stood out? >> i thought romney stood out, gingrich, in the huntsman but cain stood out. >> you've named ever one but rick santorum. >> okay so rick santorum said some nice things too if you look at them it was a great debate to watch i like the format they sat around the table. when they are sitting close to each other they don't call each other as many names, you have an intelligent discussion and i thought it was a pretty good debate if you watched it. it was bloomberg tv on the channel list, couldn't find that, but i thought it was a good format and good debate hope we see more of those. >> david what are your thoughts when you look at all these gop candidates together, civilly or not what did you thing about what you saw last night. >> i thought romney ran away with it and perry just reminded me of bush another textbook -- he butchered words a couple times. i think it is similar, republicans going through, it is similar to what the democrats did in 2004 where no body inspired debate so we went with the safe guy kerry. all right jim you got to get your guys to step it up and find some body to inspire. is there anybody in the gop field that can be as inspiring? >> everybody does at certain times, you know, michelle bachmann was inspiring and she crashed and burned and perry was inspiring and he crashed and burned, the thing about perry everybody is saying well, it is done he has $17 million in the bank an ability to raise money any time you have an ability to raise money you can do somethings, herman cane is inspiring, newt can be inspiring. >> if you can take gingrich's brain and put it in bachmann. right and perry's leadership of the state of texas. >> yes, perry's leadership of the state of texas and make romney governor of texas instead of massachusetts. >> except for the obama care thing. >> what is the bigger challenge for president obama in 2012, will it be whoever emerges from the field of gop candidates? >> it will be -- >> or whitman. >> i think it will be a weak challenger, you may end up with with republicans don't have a nominee that excites anyone but they want to win. obama will have to get those people to register, to come out again. that is a challenge a lot of them that was the first time they cared about anything. i don't thing they are as inspired right now we will see what happens. >> you know, i think you are seeing that with the president the president is going back to the basics, he is going to college towns going to places where he feels he needs to get people enthused again it is a heck of a challenge especially when there isn't any perception or reality of fixing the problems we have now. >> do you think jim, does herman cain have a shot at this? last night he was tested the more attention he gets the more scrutiny he will be under. >> if he can raise money yes. the big question always is money in these things because especially, you have a compressed calendar now talking end of december you know, january, february, march and a lot of states come into play quickly you can't build on momentum and hope the money comes in the money has to come in now that is why perry is a legitimate contender. >> if you look at average polls, romney is on top 22% of support cain at 15%, perry slipped down to 14.7 we will ' where things go after that -- see where things go after that. let's tack about the alleged terror plot and get your take on what you thing the administration's response should be to this alleged attempted assassination or plot to assassinate the saudi ambassador here in dc. >> i am no expert on foreign policy, but i think that they have to be careful, you don't want the rile iran. i don't think it is a good idea i think they have to take it slowly and figure it out an emotional response will be a very bad thing. what do you think? i guess when they do something like iran has done here, i think we have to rethink our whole policy, like david i am not an expert in foreign policy but i do know politically, when they do something like this on -- they planned on killing an ambassador here in the united states, in the capitol and they don't care whether or not civilians are hurt we need a tougher stand that is easy for me to say but i think the president needs to have to show a little more leadership. >> also they have got to get other nations, in the world behind them. they have to. >> no question. the president needs to address it a little bit. >> before we wrap things up capitol hill the jobs bill which never got the full debate in the senate, david what is your take on this? what can be done i guess seems like this roadblock between what the president wants to do and what at least the senate is blocking him from doing seems to grow >> all policy. i mean there were certain senators, three or fourer if they were not up for re- election they would have passed it. they are democrats too. that is why it didn't pass. they have to be able to say look i am breaking from the president. it is not an election year yet but election is starting. >> david is right it is all politics the president is now blaming the republicans, democrats control the senate. 51 is that the new 60. there is a lot of things going on right now the president a couple weeks ago said all or nothing on this stimulus package now they are talking about breaking it up. gain if you go back to the bigger picture where is the leadership and lack of leadership is where i think they are driving some of these numbers. think how exciting the next 12 months will be. thanks for joining us. to y 7:40 a.m., 65 degrees. japan out you do a lot of important good work here first and foremost why is it important for the county to have this here? >> agriculture is virginia's number one industry it is just good business sense agriculture has been regarded as a liability for a long time and that is not a very healthy way to look at it. then there is agriculture and then agriculture done the right way which is the mission here at air shire, the first certified humane organic farm in virginia for people who don't understand what that means can you explain that? >> this is traditional farming unless you regard the last 50 years of industrialized chemical agriculture as tradition the rest of human existence isn't. we have an integrated farm all kinds of animals lots of crops we raise and it is an integrated whole we put the land back better every year than we found it no chemical fertilizers, the the animals aren't fed growth hormones, anti biotics, everything is as it was in my grand fathers times the healthier every year for the food and for the people. >> do you find people are wanting that more, requesting it more, maybe because they are becoming more knowledgeable about it themselves? >> absolutely is down if congress, house, senate want to become involved in dc law enforcement affairs, i welcome them. we have much bigger issues, we are down 400 police officers, come in, bring us resources and property in district of columbia, we have to know where that vehicle came from and be able to track it if we can't we don't have all the resources legislature made a decision to protect the residents of the district of columbia. now i think there is a fair argument should it be -- should there be better public knowledge about this, sure but again it is very difficult when you have people not paid attention to the registration laws in their state or the district, for 90 plus states that is a quarter of a year. let me ask you this question the law had been amended there is a grace period for
