the obama administration is hoping lawmakers have enough time to tackle defense issues in europe. >> we're continuing to work with our democratic and republican senators to hold that vote this year. >> reporter: and then there is the don't ask don't tell policy. mike mullen would rather see the lame duck congress address it than decide it in courts. >> at some point in time the courts could change that law and in that not give us the right amount of time to implement it. >> reporter: and these tasks are more daunting when you consider lawmakers just took off for a nine day thanksgiving break. they reconvene on monday november 29th. more on "don't ask, don't tell" is due to come out on november 30th. they are releasing the report a day early so senators can get a better understanding of the issue before taking it up in the few work days they have left. an american scientist recently visited a nuclear reactor in the north and he found centrifuges that can produce uranium. the point man encoria said the news is not a surprise. steven bosworth, the special envoy for north korea, said the u.s. is open to more talks. >> we do not at all rule out the possibility of further engagement with north korea. but we want that to take place under a proper set of conditions and in close coordination with our partners. i do not believe in engagement just for the sake of engagement. or talking just for the sake of talking. >> bosworth is holding talks in japan this morning. tomorrow he heads to china for more discussions on the nuclear program in north korea. the jurors in the chandra levy trial come back for a fourth day of deliberations today. on friday the jury of seven women and four men sent a note to the judge they wanted to know the legal definition of assault. one of the charges against the prime suspect, ingmar guandique, is first-degree murder. but for that charge to stick the jury has to decide he is guilty of assault first. the mystery of a body found in a box on the side of a highway may be solved. police arrested 33-year-old marvin palencia in connection to the murder. last week the body of jacobo vasquez was found stuffed in a box. he was shot to death. he was found missing days before. a high ranking d.c. official is under investigation. assistant chief diane grooms is accused of compromising a test given to some members of the command staff. this is part of the annual training. grooms issued a statement to fox 5 apologizing for her actions and bad judgment. she's on administrative leave pending further investigation. two separate stabbings in manassas involving two teenage victims, one of them deadly. this morning security is stepped up at metz middle school and osborne high school. grief counselors are on hand to help students through the loss of classmate miguel hernandez. he was stabbed to death on friday. two teens were arrested in connection with the death. investigators are looking for whoever is responsible for a second attack on saturday. a 19-year-old was stabbed and beaten. authorities believe both crimes are connected, possibly linked to gangs. to baltimore where police are investigating the shooting death of a maryland correctional officer. the 28-year-old was shot and killed early on sunday morning. he was at a friend's house in east baltimore when shotment officers were executing a search warrant at that home when they saw blood on the door. police are looking for a man they believe who was at one point barricaded inside the home. speaking of baltimore, they make the list of most dangerous cities. that's according to a national study by cq press. st. louis over took camden, new jersey as most dangerous city in 2009. they had more than 2,000 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. that is five times more than the national average. baltimore took the 11th spot. d.c. came in 22nd. sarah palin has another book hitting store shelves tomorrow so what can we expect in from america by heart. we'll hear from the washington post reliable source column, the writer who has seen the book and she joins us next with her review. and a former first lady is speaking out about palin. what barbara bush has to say about her presidential aspirations. we'll be back in just a minute. - hello! - ha! why don't you try a home cooked meal... with yummy hamburger helper? >> well the surprising thing about the book is there aren't a whole lot of surprises. i think people are thinking, she's a polarizing figure. people love her or hate her and they were trying to find the juicy parts and there isn't a lot. her big memoir came out about a year ago. this is sort of the second wave book where it's her reflections on america, her reflections on patriotism and family. it's kind of a feel-good book for people who can't get enough sarah palin. this is sort of similar to -- books that political figures put out which help burnish their reputations between campaigns and make some money. and the fact she was able to come out with this book so fast after the other one shows that she's in the a-list with people like rush limbaugh or arriana huffington who are able to come out with a lot of books and they sell. >> and the fact it came out so fast, begs the question did she write this book herself or is there a ghost writer. >> there are very few politicians who write books on their own. >> among the leaks she had criticism of the obamas, criticizing views on race. does she think that they are racist? >> you know, i don't think she comes up with some stuff. but there are strong words against the obama administration. this is what is to be expected in a book like this. you're going to mix the sugar and the salt. it's still filled with criticism of obama administration, but then you flip the page and it's feel- good feelings about george washington or helen keller or other historical figures or about her own family. >> was talk last week about some pop culture things and some of the movies that she actually liked, including knocked up and juneau, which juneo. and she likes these films in particular. >> they said there's are movies where they are surprising. and in the case of both knocked up and juno you have married unpregnant woman who decide to keep the baby and that is a message she applauds. and she brought up the murphy brown controversy from years ago, responding to concerns that she had been -- that she was a hypocrite because she was against -- she was proab since -- app stin ens. and she now she carries on it the message. and then her daughter becomes pregnant. and she singles out american idol because of the talentless wannabes, people who haven't done the hard work. which is all kind of delightful and ironic because right now bristol is on dancing with the stars. two different shows i guess. >> she has criticism of the obama administration. but in the book does she offer any possible solutions to some of the problems that america is facing and is there anything in there that might serve as maybe the beginning of a platform in case she does run for president? >> listen, i don't think this book really has a whole lot new. you'll have to be a much closer scholar of palinism so see it. but this reinforces anything that she said before. if you like sarah palin, this is a couple of hours spent in her presence in which she's reiterating the things you like about her. if you don't like sarah palin, this is a book that may reinforce your feelings but won't offer you a whole lot of new ammo. this is one of those between campaign books that i assume that keeps you out there. >> the book is in stores tomorrow. amy, from the washington post, thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. >> thank you. now we should mention that barbara bush is sharing her thoughts about sarah palin. in an interview with larry king, which is scheduled to air today, mrs. bush said that she set next to palin once and thought she was beautiful. she went on to say she seems very happy in alaska and adds, quote, i hope she stays there. mrs. bush congratulated their son on his recent memoir. and dave ross joins us next to talk about last night's nail- biter of a win against the titans. but that win came with a price and we'll explain that. and also she's on her way to be queen some day and with that comes security of course. a look at kate middleton's new security detail. we'll be back in a moment. it's 9:24. d fphgege [ older brother ] hey, that's the last crescent. >> i did. >> ronald mcdonald, had he been on the side line would he have been put in. because the uniforms were the same. >> oh, harsh. you didn't like that. >> look at that giant's game last night with the cuts out down here. it looks like they were wearing halter tops. >> fast and in fleece. >> i don't like that uniform. >> thank you, dave. congratulations -- we've talked about this. we do the side bar conversations. congratulations are in order. the lady terps, the 2010 ncaa national field hockey champions. she beat number two north carolina 3-2 in overtime yesterday. >> sophomore megan frazier scored the game winner in the 98th minute. they are their seventh national title and the sixth under their current head coach. that's great. congratulations to them. and so tucker is here now. and we can stop talking about uniforms and start talking about weather. >> a fog advisory until 11:00 this morning. visibility less than a quarter mile. just looking for updates. it's about a mile in places like reston. still a quarter mile out at dulles. i don't know if they're having flight delays because of that or not. hagerstown holding tough with fog and cool temperatures as well. good news is we'll lose the fog before too long. and it should gradually improve throughout the day today. we have the fog advisory down to fredericksberg and across southern maryland and the exception is toward analyst and maryland up toward baltimore no longer under a fog advisory. no fact you never had one this morning. and the teams are warming up. as long as the clouds are holding thick we won't see much in the way of temperatures budging here. 50 at reagan national. 48 in gaithersburg. 48 in annapolis. better out in the mountains. hager town now 46 and in winchester we are 50. hang in there. our winds out of the south, we're going to kick the fog out of here and our high temperature later today is back into the low to mid-60s. that won't be bad. not bad at all for this time of year. there is your satellite radar. a good-looking forecast. we had a warm front that came through late in the day yesterday. that's well north of the region now. and we're just focusing on the cold front to the west. and so for another day and a half or so, today, tonight and tomorrow, our temperatures will remain well above average. and then some rain showers return late in the day tomorrow and some cooler temperatures for the day on wednesday. but until then, not a bad looking forecast. all right, i know it's a big week for traveling. let's talk travel weather. cold out to the west. in fact temperatures like minus 9 in billings, montana. a cold chunk of air there. we'll be in the warmer quadrant. our temperatures are closer to average by wednesday and thursday but still not bad. and when i put it in motion you'll see a frontal system up across the jet stream here. so rain showers will return for the day on thursday but forgetaway day on wednesday sunshine and cooler temperatures. forecast for today, 64 and morning fog, partly sunny and mild. noticeably milder this afternoon. winds out of the south at 5-10 miles per hour and the all- important five-day forecast. tonight 50, that's nice and mild. tomorrow 68 with a few showers in the forecast. wednesday sunshine for traveling, 56. and i mentioned the showers for thanksgiving but you don't care because you'll be indoors watching football and eating turkey. and much cooler when you head out shopping on friday with highs only in the mid-40s. that's a look at the forecast. back to you at the desk. news of their royal engagement broke last week and now the future queen kate middleton has been assigned her own team of bodyguardsp you can see kate traveling with one of the members of the team. she left her parents home when she got that shot. one of the members the same detective sergeant who was formally in prince harry's protection squad. two female protection officers dubbed cagny and lacy. and prince william saved a man's life. he was involved in a military helicopter rescue to help a man stuck in the mountains. the man suffered a heart attack on the uk's tallest mountain. he guided the helicopter to the mountainside and to hospital where the man received treatment. >> good for him. a bit of history made in japan. meet mo mo, he is among 32 dogs that passed their training to become search and rescue or detection dogs. police officials hope mo mo can squeeze her tiny frame into places too narrow for the rescue dogs which tend it be german shepherds. >> and he'll be good undercover. >> because no one will expect under that exterior is a vicious dog. >> with a big heart. go move move. it was a big weekend at the box office. a little movie you might have heard of called harry potter. details coming up. and the american music awards were last night. we'll run down a list of the -- or the list of the winners and tell you about a blast from the past that wound up on stage. >> that jacket? >> did you? >> i sure did. >> for more, keep it right here. while there are some home disasters you can't avoid, there is one you can. septic system breakdowns affect 1.2 million homes in the us each year. septic backups can cost about six thousand dollars in expense, and countless hours of repair. rid-x costs only six dollars, and the advanced natural bacteria generate powerful enzymes, which accelerate the waste digestion. use rid-x once a month, and help save yourself from disaster. harry potter cast a spell this weekend. earning the biggest box office money yet. it raked in $125.1 million this weekend. >> wow. >> coming in a distant second was megamind. the action thriller unstoppable with denzel washington and chris pine rolled into third place. i saw it this weekend and it's good. wrapping up the top five is due date and the next three days. i got this opportunity really about a year and a half ago and really was embraced by a man named usher raymond. >> look at him. he's like all the way to the bank, baby. justin beiber gave a heart felt thank you to usher, the artist who helped launch his career at the american music awards. the 16-year-old is the youngest star to win the top honor, artist of the year. that is great. this was his fourth award of the evening. beiber, beat out eminem, katy perry and lady gaga. it ends with a blast from the past. >> i have this cat jabba. you can see one of our larger kitties. very gentle and looking for a new home. also came to us as a stray. and again, no one has claimed him. so he's here and ready, looking for a forever home. >> he has lost some weight, believe it or not. >> so he's almost -- well he's still a jabba for now. and i want to get that out of the way in case we couldn't keep noel on the lap. and i also wanted to talk about an event you have coming up, home for the holidays. >> home for the holidays is our annual holiday event. it will start this year on tuesday november 30th and go through right up until the last day before christmas holidays. and we're offering a special no- cost spay and neuter for any cats or dogs that still need spay and neuter. and we're hoping this year to get all of the available cats and dogs out of the shelter. >> and we hope that for you as well. we have asked our viewers to send in questions. i just want you to get a good home so i want the folks to look at you, noel. it's okay. she's okay. so, look this animal has a lot of life. let's talk about some of the viewer questions. let's get to it. first one, and my notes are on the ground, so if we could pick that up, i'd be happy to read it. i have a 7 or 8-year-old parrot, does she need to see the vet for anything. i had her since she's a baby. >> it's a good idea to get your animals checked every year just like going to the doctor. and in addition, for birds specifically we often do trims of their nails and weeks. nails caso i recommend having them looked at once a year. >> and another question came in about why do dogs chew sticks? this viewer has a 3-year-old retriever, golden retriever that came in from deanna. >> so they are retrievers by nature so they will pick things up off the ground and bring them to you. there is no rhyme or reason to it. he's still young and playful so it's normal. >> is there an answer for bad breath for dogs? >> brushing their teeth. if you can't do it, there is water additives to give them to put in the water. those are the two best things. >> all right, and the last question is why should pregnant women stay away from kitty -- noel has now escaped -- kitty litter and all that go as long with that? what is the danger for pregnant women? >> there is one parasite that causes birth defects in women. if women and have cats and have been exposed and are not at risk, you usually get tested by your doctor to see if you are positive for it, and if you are not positive for it and have a cat, it's a good idea to have your husband clean it or wear a mask. the risk is fairly low but it's better to be cautious and do those things. >> dr. laurel marley with deepwood vet clinic in centreville and dr. karen diffiny is the animal shelter director of fairfax county police department. the event is coming up. all of that will be on our website. i miss noel already. she is a lovely dog. and it's just a different environment. and jabba as well. >> he'll make a wonderful companion for someone that wants to hang and be friends. >> a pillow pet for you. >> yes. >> thank you very much, both of you. tony over to you. the first time ever that a dog has left me. i miss him so. >> he just wanted to get away. very cute. thank you, allison. have you ever wondered what it takes to be an auctioneer? fox 5's holly morris is in mt. airy, maryland, this morning to learn about antiques and to learn to you to call an auction. holly, is that something you've never done? >> well i don't think i've gotten an official lesson, believe it or not. in all of the lessons they've signed me up for. but we are going to do that in a second because i'm hanging with a professional auctioneer. this is howard parso. we've been enjoying his collection of antiques. he's put together this drug and country store museum. and we wanted to show off more of it because i understand there has been a documentary shot here, movies from here? >> yeah. they've shot a documentary here and part of a motion picture that might be out if about two years. >> so obviously when people come and scout it out, they're like this is it. we don't need to create a set, it's here for us. >> it's there for them and they can save money that wake and you've had people from the smithsonian come? >> i've had curators come and from other museums around the country that have been enamored by the collection. >> reporter: and they are enamored because he has a nickelodeon, which i thought was a channel on tv. >> this is a time period nick load yum. >> and you put in a nickel, which is a rare piece in itself these days. >> reporter: and that's how it got the name nickelodeon. how fun is that. the fact it's in such great working condition. >> we've had had restored and the people enjoy it that come in to visit the museum. >> reporter: and before we do any auction lesson, i want to show off a few more things. they swore they would get drugs for themselves and the animals. >> because there was a rural area which was too far to head into frederick, they would come in and get the veterinary cures for their animals on the farm. >> reporter: and so as we come over to the drugstore side, which i would think security would have to be tight with the drugstore back in the day? >> kind of, not like it would be today. it was just a different time period, turn-of-the-century. and the pharmacist would probably make about 12 prescriptions a day because everything had to be compounded. >> do any of these headache powers work? >> i've never tried them. >> reporter: so now you're a professional auctioneer so you go into people's estates and auction things off. so what do you look for first when you go to sea someone's wares? >> we look for items of value to guide them what items should go to auction and what items will have a good return for them and their family. >> reporter: and then you set up an auction and you kind of get a pulse for your crowd?
