unquote idealism within the white house and he's also interested in running for mayor in the home town of chicago. and should vice president joe biden and secretary of state hillary clinton switch jobs? the washington post sally quinn thinks so. she joins us now on the phone to tell us why. hi, sally. good morning. how are you. >> i'm good. >> talk about your editorial that you penned, talking about why they should switch positions. >> first of all it's not my idea. it's been circulating around washington for the last month or so. but i didn't want to go with it until i heard it from two people. so i -- but i put it out as my idea, just because i didn't want to reveal my sources. but the idea would be that hillary clinton has proven herself to be a team player and has done a great job as secretary of state. and that joe biden has also pulled his act together and now is being called joe cool and has proven himself as vice president. the problem for joe biden is that he's too old to run for president after obama's eight years and so he would -- and he's already said he's not going to. he would be in his mid-70s. hillary is younger, so she would be in her late 60s and she's a fantastic campaigner. she's particularly good in the south. and she's dynamite with women and would wipe out the sarah palin factor. and so the idea is they would switch jobs. joe biden was a terrific chairman of the senate foreign relations committee for years and this has always been his dream job, secretary of state. so that they would switch jobs, hillary would move into be the vice president and start campaigning immediately. she can't campaign as secretary of state. she would start campaigning immediately for obama getting out on the road, whipping up the women vote, the independent vote, the southern vote and biden would take over as secretary of state and then she would be in place once they got re-elected, and then she would have the experience and she's got more experience to run for vice president than any of the republican potential presidential candidates. and then when obama's eight years were over they would have a democrat in place to run for that office. >> you led off by saying this wasn't your idea out of the blue, this is something that you had heard being circulated. >> and let me just say that i also heard last year that rahm emanual was going to leave the white house and was interested in running for mayor of chicago and the white house shot it down and then also mentioned that desire rogers was going to leave and they shot that down too. >> so then let me ask you, how realist do you think this switch is going to happen. >> i think it's going to happen. >> how soon will we hear this so that you don't have a lame duck vice president. >> there are two scenarios. they could do it after the mid term election. they both have to be -- they both have to be voted in by the white house. they both -- i mean by the senate. they both have to be confirmed so he would have to work out some way to switch the two of them and then have the confirmation vote fairly soon after that. or he could wait and appoint hillary clinton his running mate. but my feeling is that he should just switch them as soon as the mid terms are over and let her tart campaigning, give her two years to start campaigning for the re- election. >> how much stronger in 2012 do you feel an bide-clinton ticket would be versus obama biden. >> it would be a lot stronger. she's can continue on to vice president and she got attention. and also hillary has got more experience in her little finger than all of the republican presidential candidates themselves, not to mention their running mates. and i think she pulls in a lot of people that he can't get, the south or that he has a hard time with. and that is the south and women. and not only that, but they're a very experienced team. i think they would be a dynamite -- i love joe biden. he's a great guy. and i think he's been really good as vice president. but he can't go on to be president. would be a terrific secretary of state. and i don't think he would be as powerful a running mate. just symbolically alone hillary would be an incredible running mate but i don't think biden would be. i mean, he's got the working class white vote, but hillary has those too. >> well we saw what happened with desire rogers and rahm emanual. it's good to hear from you. sally quinn with the washington post. we'll find out more in the coming weeks. it is certainly a busy time in d.c. and not just because of the looming
