Coming up next at 10, our fox5 unfiltered conversation, a fascinating topic. Its all about cal states decision to introduce dorms exclusively for black students. Dr. Gregory car and rabbi rachel gardener from georgetownwn university are here to break it all dun. This was a pretty cool day for an annapolis restaurant that is him right there, dick wrenn ohio, the owner of boatt yard bar and grill. Ll. Thats jimmy buffet. He is going to tell us all about his chance encounter with jimmyy buffet today and its something he will remember forever. Well be right back. A University Housing decision is sparking conversationsve nationwide. Ars portion of a student dorm complex at Cal University campus has been reserved exclusively for black students. Tonight we are going unfiltered and taking a closer look at bott sides of this issue. So far there are 4 students living in the dorms and thems school says theres a waiting list to get in. Critics are calling it sell segregation or separatism, buter not everyon here to join the conversationon with us tonight, dr. Gregory car, associate professor of africanamerican american studies and dr. Rachel gash inner. Thank you so much for being here. Rabbi. Mr. Connors ill im going to start with you. What do youm think of h idea. I believe you guys have experienced something similar at georgetown. Ge you implicated implemented a program for jewish students, right. Correct. Im not interested or i dont find it interesting oror appropriate to try to judge this decision. I do think its really interesting that it has happenes and really appropriate and compelling to ask why. And for me, i think it has to do with two things that im certainly seeing in my my community. The first i would call sort of f the ever shifting challenges of pluralism and the other one iss exhaustion. So in our community, at georgetown we have something Living Learning communities which are interest housed arounn cultural identities and the like. And a few years ago we announced that we were going to start a Jewish Cultural Center called bite which means home. Ome. The students requested this andd we were thrilled to announce to this. T days after we announced this i get a twopage letter from an alum that essentially said rabbi we worked so hard to geto ourselves out of the ghetto andt now youre putting us back in. So for this guy, for the young people, what was forward fo thinking and empowering was fors him threatening and regressive. Thats what i mean by the shifting in dynamics. I think the other significant thing that may be happening here and that may be relevance. Living in a plurallest world feel can be thrilling but for people who are marginalized in terms of power or access at allt or people who are minorities inn numbers, they can be exhausting. What do you think about the whole i separate dorms. Before you answer, let me make it clear in case we didnt. The students at cal did request this like some of your studentse at georgetown university. Etow they requested this because thei saws it as a place of community for them and kind of a safe space, if you will. We hear that term being thrown h around a lot now where they dont have to encounter some of the daily frustrations that they might encounter if they werent living in that kind of environment. To hear about the cal la develop the that list i house is a great tribute to him. Cal state has made it clear that is not segregated by raise. That anyone of any raise canan apply and live there. Likewise at georgetown. That follows in a thet traditio. There is nearly a 50year tradition of this stuff. Cornell has a house. I lived at the due boys house. Again, theyre not segregated by raise. Am of these places are culturally themed. American indians and so are the to. I thinkris an its a good initie in part because most of these spaces, white students live wite might students. Mr. At fraternity and Sorority Think row and theyre segregated by raise. In some cases, for example, in n this cal state example isnt that segregation by raisin im not saying its the university segregating but its a group ofu students saying this is where we want to live with our own people, our own kind, isnt that segregation by raise . To . T express the desir to live in aoi space where you can have an enhanced experience, but live more comfortable, thats not segregation by raise. Ion i think thats a construction that the premise. Its not all black people live in there. In listen to reaction from some asked about this out at southern cal. Take a listen. When youre ready to go to bed you can be yourself and not have to worry about explain because ofabou your skin color. Do you worry about thehe perception because of thehe perception issue. Yeah theres rumor around the campus. They just want to be alone. Every time i go somewhere imm always the only africanamerican and sometimes it o would be nice to be able to see people from my own ethnicity or cull your t. Its kind of ivy if i i. We need to focus on all minorities, not only blacks. Nobody should be separate because its only a few that f feel that they should be separated, you know. Now. I think everybody should just be together. Let me ask you both, both,ot, rachel im going to start with you. To mean this feels like coddling. In this is not the real word. Ord in our real world we dont work at an environment where therese just black people or just white people. Isnt that what this is essentially . The students need this, lets make them feeleel better in this bubble . Ubbl i think thats an interesting question. Its about seeking balance. I really believe in home spaces. Thats why we call bite home. I think we have to seek out heterogeneous and you go home to recover and rejuvenate and relax, but the real meaning in the work and the justice is in those tough places of speaking across differencesment i have empathy for that. Desire, i hope it is balanceds with a continued commitment entering into those more difficult. Dr. Car, 400 years is a long time in carrying the burden. Bu when we look at residential housing, segregation, this country is extremely segregated by choice. Would you say its by choice . It might be government sort of trickled down. Dow its a limited opportunity to live its externally imposed. I would say this about this White College campuses, nonampu whites have been forced to carry the burden of quote, unquote, diversity at white schools. I thinkhite its interesting bee the real world is majority area non white. By the time these kids get to go to college when you talkhen about the real world, what world are you talking about . Number one, isnt college supposed to be exposing yourself partly exposing yourself to different cultures, to different percentage a Free Exchange of ideas and dont you get that better when youre all mixed in together t and not separated. For six to eight hours a day i think its okay to lay down when youre feeling a little and nobody is complaining aboutl all the athletes. Hl theyre in the dorms becauses b theyre athletes. And theyre at the schools because theyre athletes. They count toward the minority population. If you take them out of thathat once that sing to zero. How do you respond to the the folks who say we fought foroug civil rights, we fought so wewe wouldnt have these certain situations. The Civil Rights Movement wam about authority under the law. It was not it was about equality under the law. Aw. I think that something thatsha out of the conversation is for many people safe place is everyy where. They dont have to think aboutau it, my age, my gender, my raise. And so they dont have to experience that exhaustion. Xhau and that those that have toave experience it, id feel comfortl lable saying its good to have a home space. We do need i can speak to myo community only really encourageu resilience and not avoidance ani courage i also think self care is important as well. E i think we could continue thists forever but i want to bring up reel quick, ca is not the onlyte place that does this. Read college in portland, oregon, they not only do it on whether youre asian or black, but also gender neutral. Theres all sorts of communities. Can we take one more minute . We got to get out. Wellell continue this. Well keep it going anywhere. Thank you very much. Thank you both for joining bt us. We do appreciate it. Well be back right after this. New at 10, an annapolisanna Restaurant Owner has somesome serious bragging rights tonight.
