A tradition at the national zoo on the day after easter has been mared by violence by recent years. So should the tradition be dropped. Coming up next were taking a look at both sides of this debate in a special edition of this weeks fox 5 unfiltered. The tradition of africanamerican family day at the national zoo dates back to 1819. In fact this tradition began during segregation when blacks werent allowed to participate in the White House Easter Egg Roll. Several days have been marred by violence letting some to question whether this should continue. In the past there have been chaotic scenes. There was a double shooting one year, Police Confirmed theyve had to put more officers in that area to deter young people from using the day to settle their differences. This year the zoo officially changed the name to family day because of the stigma the day has brought in the past. And the name is not the only thing thats changed. We actually increase security. We increase screening to make sure that everybody who is coming is coming to have a great family experience. Thats the way the world is moving. The world is moving into a multicultural environment. It could have happened anywhere. You cant live your life in a box and if you take away, especially when you have kids, if you take these things away from fear, i feel like the bad people win. Tonight we are going unfiltered to discuss whether this langstanding tradition of the africanamerican family day at the zoo should continue or should it be dropped because of the associated with the event to keep the peace. I think the gentleman that we talked to in the piece pointed out its multicultural, its what the world is today. Whats in a name, we go from africanamerican day to family day. Is this day necessary . I personally feel like its absolutely necessary, just given the history of the day and what it meant to native washingtonians. As weve been moving forward so much of black washington has been marginalized. I think you should stay the same and we should support anything that talks about family, right . Especially black family. Whats your response because i know you dont necessarily agree that we need to keep this longstanding tradition. Well aspect of what he said that we do need to continue having some type of event on Easter Monday because it is a National Event that weve participated in for a number of years. But i think by changing the name it has become more inclusive, because as our communities have changed over the years, all quadrants of the city, we see more diversity. If they change the name, which i think they have, then i think they should pay some type of homage to the Africanamerican Community in honor of. What do you mean . They changed the name from africanamerican family day to family day this year. Right. But because it was started as an africanamerican tradition, because we were not allowed to participate in the easter egg roll at the white house, i think they should sa well, you know, its going to be family day, but were going to recognize the contributions that the local Africanamerican Community has made in the beginning of event. Because it was because of us that it started. Thats why i think it should stay though. For that reason. And if its africanamerican family day, it doesnt necessarily mean other families cant come. And i feel like we need to hold on to that. Because if its africanamerican day that means all families can come. Why cant they come to africanamerican family day, right . I think its not something they feel like people cant come to and to be honest with you i think its a change as a result of the violence. But these kind of incidents thats been in my mind, were talking about children, its been youth, right . Were talking about dhirn and the fact that were not instead of reaching out to these young people and creating situations where theres outreach and interventions, we were at the zoo and Nothing Happened last year. It was many activists there along with mpd. My point is that i think these we could impact this and change that and you shouldnt take away something with such historic reference because of these incidents. On that note, because you talk about the sacrifices an the fact that kids need to know that theres ai reason this day had been set aside for a number of years. Is it fair to kind of erase my perception is youre erasing that part of the history if youre changing the name based upon the violence. Based upon the actions of a few youre sacrificing the events of the whole community. It could be perceived that way, but when you say family the idea behind it is were for family. It wasnt just africanamerican, it was all. Because our communities are diverse and because of the negative connotation that has been associated with by saying family day, you have more people coming and you have more participation by the families. If you think back the years where violence erupted, it was kids who were not accompanied by their parents. When you say family day, that always gives more responsibility to their family. Let me ask you this. It almost sounds like you guys are both saying we still need to keep the day. You just want to keep the name and you say change the name but pay tribute or homage to the reason we celebrate this day. So essentially you both agree we need to keep this day. We need to keep the day. What about the folks who say you know what . As long as we keep this day, were going to keep having the violence and things will keep happening. We dont feel safe bringing our children down because of what weve seen in years past. I dont think sha should be an issue. Because being a former Law Enforcement officer with the metropolitan Police Officer for at least 28 years and still being in Law Enforcement today, i think every Law Enforcement officer in the city will make sure and do their best and give 101 to make sure everybody is safe same thing. I dont think our visitors want to come and feel unsafe. So if we do what were supposed to do and include more family responsibility and more resources, as he said, there were a lot of people at the zoo a couple of years ago. As a matter of fact i was at the Second District and our officers went out and even when they werent, i worked for another Law Enforcement agency and we had people there. When you talk about violence, especially with Youth Violence as a city, we need to have a comprehensive approach. We cant mpd this away. We have to Work Together on all frents. Let me jump in. We need to keep the name the way it is, pay homage, how do we do this. Give me real quick a solution. How do we save this. Social media. All the media forms. You look at historical aspect as to why were having this and why this originated. The city needs to fund in the zoo but across the city, to be more active and be more present in their community so that we can kind of defuse a lot of issues that spill out in places like the zoo and other places around the city. But you dont shut it down because you only empower the bad people. And we want to make sure we take our own city and be responsible as parents, citizens and community leaders. We didnt get it in there but i know you were also concerned about the taxing of resources on the city, the drain of using more officers to staff the area during that time period. Its a community effort. As you said, mpd, we cant do this with any other Law Enforcement and make us the problemsolver. Its a problem that should be solved by everybody. We all hold a stake in there. I live right near the zoo and i saw the traffic going up there today. You hate to think in years past those kids wouldnt have expected to be walking into a violent scene but was quiet today. Im a native washingtonian, i can remember going as a four or five yearyearold to the zoo with my family. We are out of time. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. Well be right back. Fox 5 dc cares is our Stations Campaign to highlight the great work of nonprofit organizations in our area. All this week we are partnering with autism speaks. Our goal is to raise awareness about autism in our community and also highlight the joys and the challenges facing families living with autism, including my own. Last week i sat down with my friend and colleague Allison Seymour and shared a personal part of my familys 16year journey with autism. Tyson was always so smart. I remember tyson putting puzzles together when he was a little thing. And looking back now you say he was also reading before he was speaking. Are those indicators . I dont know that the indicators, but i do know i hear from a lot of other parents who have children who have asperger aspergers syndrome love puzzles. We would give him legos and he wouldnt use the instructions and he would have them finished in a fewer hours where it might take someone else a couple of days. In the process of trying to figure out of what was going on with tyson, there were people before the official diagnosis who mentioned your son might have autism and he should be in this program over here. And at that time i wasnt educated in what autism was. My thought was, what many people assume, is a child whos nonverbal, who sometimes there are different characteristics where we think about children who have autism, who rock, who do things with their tyson didnt have those symptoms, i was like no way. Because i didnt understand it. Maybe a year went by and my pediatrician mentioned the word as pergers syndrome. It described him perfectly so he came in and reread it and there was a huge sort of relief because i knew now what was going on. Aspergers is on the autism spectrum and tyson is very high functioning. Its more characterized by socializing. After that we went and had an official diagnosis done at Childrens Hospital and there was just a certain amount of release because now we knew. We knew how to or what we were supposed to do instead of just trying to figure out whats going on with our kid. As a mom, what do you want other parents to know about children with autism . Theyre just like every other kid. Children who have aspergers or who are on the autism spectrum, theyre special. I dont mean special as in special needs. I mean theyre brilliant. They can do things that you and i cant do. Sometimes you may need to be a little more patient and understanding, which i think we all need to do in this world. There are so many different kinds of people, that instead of taking the time to understand or learn, we just lump them into a group. And i wish people were more patience and they took the time to understand and appreciate that. When tyson was old enough to understand, we determined he was old enough to understand, we told him, we said hey, we want you have something called aspergers syndrome. And he was like well, what is that . I said well, sometimes it makes your brain think a little bit differently and your brain is brilliant. And what we want you to know is that its not a disability. Its a gift. Because your brain can do things that most of us cant even imagine. We wanted him to know if he was in school and he was confused and if something didnt seem quite right or if his method of communication didnt seem as easy for him, now he would understand why. And it was kind of a relief for him too. Some of you have posted or commented on my testimony that my sons aspergers is a gift and not a disability. You should know, i was only talking about my familys story and the way we choose to view it. The broad. It ranges from severe and high functionings and it is different for every family. I thank all of you for your comments and your well wishes. I hope you join us as we head into april which is Autism Awareness month and we ask that you think about making a donation to autism speaks. They do so much, so many great things in our community, from research to giving grants to local organizations that work with the organization and the community and of course they help with the families living with autism. I have a nephew with autism. Hes very different from tyson but know what youre going through and that he is tremendously gifted. Such a genius and we love him. Thank you. Thank you. I didnt mean to cry. Lets switch gears now. We could switch to anything you want. We can talk cherry blossoms. A lot of them go kaput .
