This is fox5 local news at 10. Right now at 10, hes sitting in isolation at this county jail. Tonight the exclusive jail house interview with the man allegedld behind a child pornography scandal that has rock Prince Georges County schools. s concerned parents confront school p leader. Der. What change are being made to protect the children. Fox ass Team Coverage begins right now. And we begin with our fox55 exclusive for the first time were hearing from the man at the center of the appalling school child porn investigationi in Prince Georges County. E ge im tony perkins and im shawn yancy. This man, did i and take you tak care way is the volunteer school aid accused of making videos of children engaged in sex acts. Last thursday one of the alleged vic i ams uncles went to the t school and spoke with the principal about his concernsabou about the suspec you care way. According to the uncle, the principal told him to circle back in a few days, but instead he went to police. On friday, Police Arrested care way. On monday they held a news conference. They revealed that as am as 12 children were involved in the videos. On tuesday, school offeringsings sent home a letter informing parents about what was going on. Then wednesday, one of the alleged victims families filed a lawsuit and for the first time Prince Georges County schoole leaders spoke publicly about the case. They also announced the schools principal had been placed on administrative leave. Fox5s Marina Maracco met exclusively with care way tonight at the prince georgesgs county department of corrections in upper marlboro, what did he have to say. O reporter we did. Rter i went in with my photographer. We went in for roughly about ano hour here. We showed up and of course when you walk in you have to leave everything we only had our ids and our jackets basically with us. We went inside. He was already waiting for us at the medical ward of the jail. He was sitting on the other side of a glass partition. Of course, a an orange jumpsuit. He was not handcuffed. He was not shackled when we showed up. Both my photographer than aintroduced ourselves. He had accepted our request to see him and then when wen saturday down with him one of my first questions was were you involved in the child pornography charges and accusations and he said, he was very candid with us and said, yes, that he did partake in these videos. He said that he believed himself to be one of the children. He was just another big kid sharing with these children that hes known for quite sometime as hes been a teachers aid at that Elementary School as well as most recently a volunteer. He told us that he never engaged in any sort of interactions with any of those children, but he says that he was privy to all these videos,s, that he was watching them as they performed these acts on camera. Now i sass that a lot of these videos were taken on the childrens cellphones and then the videos were sent to his cellphone via the social media app that we know as kik where you can remain anonymous and send pictures through that app. He says that is how he received the videos on his phone. Let me ask you, it sounds like he thought that what he was doing was okay . What was your sense . Did he understand theert graft of the charges against aga him . Does he know that he was wrong. I did ask him, i said you you understand that you are facing very serious charges. There are at least now ten felony charges and you could potentially be spending the rest your life behind bars. As soon as i said, he began to cry. He says he understands what he did was wrong, and he was sorry, but he said he neverr sexually interacted with these children. He said he was just watching. He felt as though he was one of them. Sean, ill tell you speakingou with him you dont get the sense that this is a 22 year old adult. Speaking with him it seems likes rather youre speaking with a younger child, if you will. A big question, of course, rises how, in fact was he then allowlw to actually act as a volunteerue at this school with any sort of responsibility with these children. Marina, can i ask, is he claiming that he didnt shoot any of these videos, that they e were essentially just sent to him . Is he trying to make somee differentiation there. Ffer reporter no, hes not tony. He says that he was participating as far as taking r some of these videos, even atn times directing some of thesese videos and being a part of thehe scene of this video of these videos. But he says he was never in anyn of the videos, so he was never in front of the camera, if you he says a lot of the things toot place before his eyes, but he he didnt physically participate p with these children. I will tell you that he says that this all started as fun and times. It started as hide and go seekk games or even as truth or dare. It would start innocently, he says, as kissing and then from there evolve into of course much more serious physical actions, including sexual intercourse. You would. Wou im curious, did he ever explain how he was able to get the kids by themselves and shoot these videos . So, from what i gather fromhr our interview, sean, the majority of these videos weree actually shot at the rec center. Of course youll know that thert are no teachers. The employees there are volunteers like did i and take you. So he was there many times with these children by himself as their parents were working. He actually told us that the t night that he was picked up on friday, he was at the home one of the victims and he considers the mother of one of those 10 year old children to be his mentor. He looks up to that woman. He says i just cant believeieve that this happened as i leaving her house. Obviously this is a very serious situation involving children. A lot of people very upset, concerned about this. Er do you have a sense of why hef h talked to you about this . And a talked so openly about all of this . Reporter tony, i think my sense was that he wanted to share that he considers himself to be a troubled person. He says that when he was about 10 years old, third, fourth grade he wouldnt really give me a definitive timeline or age he was raped in Elementary School. He says that yet again when he was in high l school, some High School Students attempted to remove his clothing and that he was nearly raped at due val high school. He did mention this to Police Officers. Its because of his troubled up special education classes, hes had a lot of trouble. Ble. Hes been raped. This is why he sympathized witha these children. Ldre these children saw him as another child and he was just one more part of that group. He did not see himself as an adult, if you will. He did see himself as a superior to have responsibility over them, but just one more of the group. That was kind of frank scary to see that a 22 year old man man considered himself h at the at level of a 10 year old. Marina, you said he now understands that what he did was wrong. Did he display any signs of remorse since hes now admittedd to these acts . Reporter he did, sean. He says hes sorry. We asked him, you say yourere troubled. You say you were rained when you were young. What about these children moving forward . Do you understand what this means for their lives and how theyll live likely also a troubled life. Bled he would just put his head downd and then start to cry and wouldnt it was hard for him to elaborata on that subject. He did say a couple of timesf t that he was sorry but he never went more into detail as to how this all could affect thesethes children moving forward. But it did seem like he realized that this was seer yourself s serious enough that, in fact, hes in jail now. The first thing he said to me was i cant believe im behind bars. I would never have imagined i would have found myself in this situation. Ive never been arrested before. I know this question has come ue a lot, are there background checks at prince georges counte Public Schools for anyone that works there. Yes, there are because nothing would have shown up because he has no criminal past. I certainly appreciate the candor in giving us your insighr from talking to him today. Thank you very much. We do point out of course that deand take you care way is in jail and the things that hes saying is what he said to our reporter. We dont know what the factsts said. Joining us tonight to talk a little bit more about this, an expert in forensic mental health. Jay. We thank you for being here. Just based on what youve heard right now, give me reaction toco the things that this man told t our reporter. Ter. Its a pleasure to be here with you, sean and tony. Y. Certainly based on what we just heard from marina. Ina. There are certain numbers that need to be consideration intoo consideration. Certainly a tragic situation and one of the things hes talkingkg about is his own situation of abuse. Approximately one in every fivef girls under the age of 18 and approximately one in every 20 boys under the age of 18 in thei United States is the victim of childhood sexual abuse. However, when it comes to individuals who then go onto perpetrate these inappropriaterr sexual actions that we find that only 30 percent of them have had a history of sexual aby. Its certainly not something when it comes to the trajectory of as children that they necessarily go onto commit these kinds of acts as adults. That said, its not so much a question of where the guilt falls but the mitigating factors. It seems to speaking to thehe public at this time that shouldt have been one consideration to t be able to begin the process in talking about the mitigating factor. Let me ask you, marina said whed she talked to him she sort of got a sense that he wasnt a 23 mentally. He even told her that he feltha like he was one of the kids. What is your take away from what he told her and her sense of actually seeing that. Sure, shawn yancy. S i thinkur a lot can be said abot this. Obviously further investigationh needs to beer done, particularly an evaluation of his competency. Something that was very illuminating to me is hearing from marina that he had been in special education throughout his lifetime. Me. There are am reasons why individuals are in special education courses, but certainly one thing to be able to take a look at there based on specifically his history of of abuse as well as history of being bullied and having some very negative lifetime experiences its also very aluminating that he seems to have beneficial eighted in somee way, shape or form on his own childhood, not being able to mature. Having an individual who mentally may be a child,d, however, has the body of a grown man of course in am cases can be dangerous for a variety ofiety purposes. Jay, let me just ask you one quick question. It seems odd to me that hes able to perhaps start to layout this ground work, as you said, i was aabused as a child. I was raped as a child, but then to not be able to acknowledge that what he was doing, if it was done to him it seems to me he would understand that its wrong to be dog it to others. Oh is that odd be a difference there. Not particularly, tony. Weari refer to this as a theory of mind or basically a victim empathy and oftentimes individuals who have gone through these very difficult and traumatic life circumstances, cr when it comes to them perpetrating that abuse havese difficulty identifying withdent their victims as individuals who will actually likely exactly as marina said go through some very difficult times themselves intie the future. Ure. Its certainly something wherehg we on the same page we need to take care of our children but also recognize that this kind of abuse as was noted likely was very, very difficult to be able to predict. Its simply tragic that it t happened in one of our community schools. Such a disturbing case. Jay, the founder of the Global Research for of institute foray bus. These arent wind chills, thesel are the actual air temperatures that were going to be seeing as we go forward. Orwa into the Holiday Weekend were continuing to much what thet possibility of some light snowt on monday and the change here as i take you to the seven day forecast is that it now looks, l the models look like they want to get rid of the cold air in a hurry on tuesday and it would be more rain than snow or maybe a little bit of mix that end the snow. I kind of have a hard time believing that all of this cold air is gone in time to be rain on tuesday. Either way it will be a small accumulation.
