you heard about this one at d.c. schools. were teachers fired needlessly? don't miss this war of words. that's next.  a war of words at a special d.c. council hearing today and a key player wasn't even there. council members are calling out d.c. school's chancellor michele rhee over a budget dispute. it is a disprepare peans that could -- discrepancy that could amount to millions of dollars. fox 5's john henrehan explains. >> reporter: even though d.c. school chancellor michele rhee was not present at a saturday hearing on budgetary needs for the public school system, her name kept coming up and it was rarely complimentary. >> you must -- [ indiscernible ] -- in this case a very dangerously reckless person to dismantle public education and destroy livelihood in the name of reform. this is not reform. chancellor rhee must go. >> reporter: defenders of michele rhee point to test scores in d.c. public schools that are rising. but one teacher has analyzed the test scores and concluded among 16 cities with large minority populations, the achievement gap in d.c. is worse and the gap has grown under michele rhee's tenure. >> from 2005 to 2007, we were narrowing the gap. then in 2007 to 2009, we increased that gap. >> reporter: chancellor rhee this week has also gotten into a very public argument with the city's chief financial officer. rhee said on tuesday the school system is running a surplus, and that can help pay for teacher's raises. cfoghandi disagrees and subjects the school system is running in the red. councilman vincent gray says he's exasperated by the event. >> it makes constituent look ridiculous. >> reporter: it should be pointed out vincent gray is running for mayor against fen- phen who hired michele rhee as chancellor. the d.c. council has scheduled a hearing for next thursday to discuss the proposed budget for the city's public school system for next year. meanwhile the city council and the rank and file of the teachers union are holding off contract ratification votes until it's clear whether the city can afford to raise teachers' pay by the promised 20%. john henrehan, fox 5 news. >> that school budget hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on thursday. $12 million in scholarship money on the line at this competition. it's machine against machine at the 19th annual nasa robotics championship in atlanta. more than 500 robots are competing. teams of students from all over the country designed them and act as pit crews. nasa gives away the money to the best teams. some kids in new york got a chance to play surgeon for a day. these fifth graders spent the entire week at a mini medical school. they built their own human body with paper, sponges and candy. the surgery they practiced was a heart transplant. >> i learned that if you smoke, your lungs could turn black and cue have a short life. >> we learned about the human body and all the different parts of it. i kind of like that. because you save people's lives. >> the school says it plans to continue teaching and may expand it to include third and fourth graders. it's sponsored by the nyu school of medicine. he too was once an idol wannabe. now adam lambert is putting this experience to good use. we had sunshine today but some strong winds and it was cool outside. take a look at the temperatures. for tonight right now 48 degrees at d.c. 47 at dulles. 45 at frederick. how low will those temperatures dip tonight?
