Kind of suspicious vehicle. The investigation is going to have to go as to why the officers opened fire. Ed we are going to show you someow video of a police cruiser. There was a Capitol Police ca officer who tried to chase the woman and he hit one the barricades that is installed on the lower end of constitutiontii avenue near first street northwest. Those barricades are used for major events like the state of the union. Those barricades came up as thee officer was in pursuit. The vehicle was practicallyticly destroyed. The officer was trapped. Apped. The rescue and department had to come were going to the press conference now. We are looking again at the u. S. Capitol. This is an area where the press conference is about to begin. You can see officials walkinging over. As paul mentioned the u. S. U. S. Capitol squad car was so damagea when it clipped one of the barricades from the United States st secret was. Et i want to talk about the about incident today. At 1412 hours, today a black sedan struck temporary securityu fencing and one of our uniformom officers at the checkpoint affidavit white house at 15 street northwest. No the vehicle fled east of pennsylvania avenue. Av there were multiple crime scene as a result of the vehiclescles fleeing. There were multiple shots firedi at several different locations. This case is under investigation bit metropolitan policetroli department with assistance fromh the u. S. Capitol police, secreti service and thec federal b bureu of investigations. Of that is all i have, but i will take a few questions. [ inaudible ] this is under investigation,t but at this point an unauthorized vehicle attempted to gain access at a very outer perimeter checkpoint. Ter this is an outer perimeter checkpoint of the white house. Beyond that checkpoint, theres multiple other checkpoints thatn someone would have to go through, but theres this, this unauthorized vehicle, approachee the checkpoint. Our officers acted appropriately. The vehicle then fled, and instantly struck one of our officers as it departmente depad initial scene. The name. Deceased . That is not being released as this point. In is terrorism ruled out . That is under investigation but uniformed, Police Officers examine Capitol Police officers. There were no shots fired att white house. Good evening, chief of thee u. S. Capitol police. L you heard the preliminarylimina information regarding what ga happened at the white house. E subsequent to that, our officerf attempted to make a stop at garfield circle. The vehicle eluded them and continued up behind us at constitution avenue. Co it appears our officer in an in attempt to pursue the vehicle struck a barricade. Ultimately the vehicle stoppedle at second and maryland northeast where we were able to capture the suspect. Su you have the status was officer . I personally spoke with the officer and he is doing well. He is a 23 year veteran of the unitedve states state Capitol Police and he is doing very well. Thank you for asking. [ inaudible ]naib he was at the hospital when n spoke with him. Sp but he is going to be fine. How was he injured . I dont have the specific injuries. His vehicle apparently strucu the barricades behind us. It appears all around the capitol, the security worked exceptionally well. Ex we had a brief lockdown of the capitol and we were able to lock things down and clear the event extremely quickly keeping everybody safe, notifying everybody of what was going on,g and we actually cleared the scene rather quickly. As you know, we had a briefing probably within the hour of whaf was going on. We obviously, are investigatinge the incident. I mean, multiple Law Enforcement agencies and this appears to be an isolated singular matter. At this point no nexus to terrorism. [ inaudible ] ] pardon me . How can you rule out terrorism. From the facts and circumstances that we have thus far, it appears theres no relationship. The s somali defense. The suspect. He we are not talking about thet suspect. Where were the plates from . We are not releasing any information on that. How did you how did she get past the first barricade . The child in the car . My understanding is there wae a oneyearold child in the car. I believe that actually one of our officers initially rescued the child and took the child tod initial medical care in the the vicinity here and then the child was taken to the hospital. [ inaudible ] pardon me . The barricades were they upey when she came through them . We are obviously still investigating that. Gating let me turn it over to chief lanier with the metropolitan police department. I do not that information. [ inaudible ] let me try on answer a couple of questions real quick. S real i will tell you up front that. Theres some video that has been released. I would caution you that that video only catches the incident, a small part of this incident, i theres things that were notgs t captured on video before and after, obviously. As of right now, we do know that there were shots fired in at least two locations in thisth pursuit. The pursuit was from 15 and garland avenue, the United States secret service and Unitee StatesCapitol Police. Lice. Right now the suspect in the vehicle, we do know was struck w by gunfire. At this point has been pronounced. The suspect has been pronounced at this point. At the child is approximately a year old and is in Good Condition and in protective custody. Right now its all very preliminary. We dont know which officersfics fired, how many rounds were fired. I will say that both at white wt house and at the capitol. The security per me tier rs per. They did what they were supposed to do, and they stopped aped suspect from breaching the perimeters in a vehicle at both locations. Both of the United States secre service, and Capitol Police officers from what i have seen so far in this investigationtion acted heroically in trying to stop this suspect from entering the security perimeters at botho locations. Tions. We have two officers who injured, one from capitol and ci one from secret service. Both of them will be okay. Two officers injured doing their job. Im not going to answer any questions about the investigation thatti pertains tt evidence or theai suspect at ths time. The suspect, the last gunfirf was and 100 block of maryland avenue. Was pronounced some time later. Chief do you think this could have been [ inaudible ] ] our information we have righe now is this does not appear in anyway an accident. An this was a lengthy pursuit. Uit. There were multiple vehicles that were rammed. There was officers that were struck and two security pr meter rs that werme perimeters thatd to be breached. It doesnt appear this this is an accident. Ac we dont know that yet. That were not going to release information about the suspect or anybody else. We first notify next of keene kn before we lease tha release that information. We are not going to comment on any information with regard tord evidence attitude this point. [ inaudible ]. The shots fired . I can tell that you there was two places where shots are fire that were aware of at this point. Its still preliminary. The pursuit started 15 and e street. It came down pennsylvaniasylva avenue, the guardfiel guardfiel garfield circle should were shots fired and then the vehicle continued on first street, constitution avenue, up constitution, around the barriers, and then on to 100 block of maryland avenue where the vehicle crashed and additional shots were fired there. Did the vehicles go aroundhie the barrier . We are not sure. We ar there was contact with the the barrier by one vehicle. We dont know if there was othes vehicles, but we know that the barriers did go up and we know that at least one vehicle struce the barriers. We dont know that yet until wel finish the reconstruction. The metropolitan policetan department will be investigatinw this case. Il we are getting support from fbi, Capitol Police, and secretet service. I cannot comment on that at had point. Int. 1 more question. The crash at the 100 block at maryland avenue. At that point its close to the security booth. The Security Officers from the capitol there was another roundd gunfire, that is where [ inaudible ] all we are giving you the the facts we know of what has happened. I am not ruling anything out at this point. Im pretty confident this is not an accident. Thank you. What i say is it does not appear to be. I wantap to reiterate the heroic work of the United StatesCapitol Police officers at multiple locations in additionti to rescuing the child out of vehicle. Shots were fired at this location as well. Ll. Finally when they boxed herbo around the 100 block of maryland that is where shots were fired d second time and the suspect was killed. Whenever the president is in the white house, they have Sharp Shooters on the roof of the white house. They extended the perimeter across pennsylvania avenue. The many tourists that were here were not allowed to go beyond Lafayette Square as they normally can, walk across pennsylvania avenue to the gatet there, the north fence, iron fence arn the white house, but that is not the case. It wasnt earlier, it still is not now. The perimeter, the security perimeter around the white house has been extended some as this investigation continues. Io earlier there were a number of f detectives from several law enforce the agencies here at this 15 and e, the East Entrance to the white house. The w the Police Presence has backed off considerably. As we mentioned earlier we never saw evidence markers that shots this been fired here. He along the way, we found a team, a co Capitol Police officer, gof in the direction we were, heading more toward the mall and the capitol complex. One Capitol Police officer i i asked him what is going on, wha has happened and he turned to mo we got someone. What does that mean. We got somebody. So he kept going on ang althougl thalong theway.
