hopefully you had a great thanksgiving and that is not over yet. happy thanksgiving to you. the high pressure is in control and gave us all of the sunshine. there is more sunny days ahead, i'm happy to say, and the temperatures are going to be above average and continue to be into the course of today as well. wait until you see our highs. a cold front is on the way and we have some changes and unsolved weather that we're going have to deal with. in the meantime, today's high, 61 degrees at national airport; 61 at dulles and 60 at baltimore and these temperatures, 6 to 7 degrees higher than the average norm for the day and we did well. and this was windy today. the winds got gusty at some point and right now, it's 54 at national airport; winds from the southwest at 3 miles an hour and the winds have cammed down and considering what they were earlier. forty degrees at baltimore; to the south, 50 at fredericksburg; 54 at hagerstown. 52, martinsburg. chillier at winchester and 46 degrees. up the eastern seaboard, chillier in boston. 41 degrees there and 52, however, for new york city and a big macy's thanksgiving parade there today and 52 degrees to the south in raleigh. now, winds are calm, as i said, we have some gusty wins earlier and that -- winds earlier and that has improved. if you know anyone who travelled across the country for thanksgiving day, the weather was not too bad. there were a few showers on the west coast. other than that, not bad at all. temperaturewise, in the upper midwest to the south, we have the warmers and cooler to the areas of the northwest. we're benefiting from the southerly wind flow and that helped to keep our temperatures up into the course of today and the next couple of days. we're going to see the temperatures on the rise and not bad at all. so the conditions as i mentioned, anyone traveling to the west coast had to deal with some rainfall and not much and leave all, things are not bad. a few clyde clouds here and there. other than that, a rim of hundred dollars had for us on the east coast and we benefit from this ridge. if you look, we don't have any clouds to speak about and very, very clear skies and there was no shortage of sunshine. that room is going to hold, instead, as we move into tomorrow and that is continuing. the jet stream to the north of us, allowing for a south- southwesterly flow. the temperatures are going to be into the 60s and we're going to be above the seasonal average and have dry conditions. the next thing we have to keep an eye on, though, is an approaching cold front and that will have associated low pressure system with it and that is going to bring us wet weather in through sunday and later into monday. we're going to have to deal with it as well. we'll have unsettled weather and in terms of the weekend, we're starting tomorrow and we're still back with nice conditions. look at this. plenty of sunshine for tomorrow by midday and 63 degrees. not bad at all. the umbrellas shouldn't have been there. the clear skies and lows in the 30s, low 30s in the burbs. upper 30s into the city with some nice conditions and tomorrow, once again, excuse me, we have plenty of sunshine and temperatures are going to be up there. so, double sixs for your high tomorrow, get out and enjoy the rest of your holiday. saturday, we're back to another nice day. wet weather sunday and monday, and then we get back to drier conditions on tuesday. overall, not bad. just chill net burbs for tonight. >> i'm really happy turkey day turned out this way. >> yes. beautiful. >> originally said a gas leak may have caused the blast on wisconsin avenue, but they're not sure. the explosion blew out windows and brought down a wall. a special task force and a canine unit are there thanksgiving? it was absolutely beautiful. i think you're going to like what is in store the rest of the week. gwen is here with the check of our weather. >> hi, gwenn, happy thanksgiving maureen. it was a fabulous gift from mother nature. light look at the maps and we'll show you where we hit temperaturewise. temperatures from 6-7 degrees above the seasonal average; 61 degrees at national airport. the same at dulles and 60 degrees at battlemore. right now, it's 54 degrees in the nation's capital. humidity at 51% with a light southerly wind. the winds were gusty earlier and they had definitely improved and are much, much calmer now. right now, it's 50 degrees at baltimore. >> 48 at dulles; 46, win chester and cooler there. fifty to the south at fredericksburg and 54 degrees at hagerstown. as a mentioned, the winds are calm and a far cry from the 20 miles per hour wind gusts we had earlier today. the things are improving and as we head into tonight, the skies remain very clear. by the 10:00 hour, cooling down to 47 degrees. the winds will be light huffing in from the southwest and actually, it's not going to bring the realm there. i did change that graphic and we have nice weather ahead. we have some changes coming, though. i'll have that later for you. maureen. >> thank you, gwenn. we're six hours or four hours away, depending on where you go from the start of black friday and some shoppers have been lined up all day and some stores are opening earlier this year as many of you already know. paul rafael is talking to shoppers in fairfax. how's it looking out there? >> reporter: the question is when are we going to start? that is a new question. the sacred black friday deals are out and they're opening on thursday like this store here. kmart in fairfax, virginia, and this opens at 6 a.m. there are people outside waiting and a rush in, right as they open to get the black friday deals. it's working, them opening on thursday. because we have seen a stream of shoppers all the time we have been here and have asked them why they come. some saying they're getting out of the house for the weather and maybe they escape the in- laws. for the most part, people are searching for deals. electronics are the big sellers. we talked to one of the managers to find out if they found out if opening on thanksgiving was a success. >> i was busy this morning, you know, and some people waiting outside and the deals on the electronics and the tv from which one and we were out of that one already. and most of the day. >> things are selling out. the sleet time. and they expect another rush later this evening after a people eat their dinner and maybe want to go hunt for some bargains and this store is open until 9. back home at 5:00 a.m. for black friday. so, this is pretty busy. going to continue to be. >> deed it is. thank you for that. we see the folks streaming in and out. black friday, the perfect opportunity for the thieves to break into parked cars. we have a warning for you. aaa said thieves are known to move through parking garages and lots looking for valuables out in the open. aware around them and lock their cars. lock their cell phones, spare change, and gps devices. struck in a horrific accident in a home depot parking lot. one person is dead, five others in serious or critical condition. the police say something happened to the driver to make him lose control and hit the crowd. a passenger grabbed the wheel but it was too late. no word on the driver's condition tonight. congresswoman gabby giffords is giving back by serving meals to service members and retores in tucson, arizona. she's on the road to recovery after being shot last january. here at home, we met soldiers happy to be back in the state. fox 5s tom fitzgerald reports from fort meade, maryland. >> reporter: if you think you have a small army to feed at your house, well, meet u.s. army colonel ed ralstein. >> happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: just back from afghanistan, he's the garrison commander of fort meade in maryland. he said leave seas or here on base serving a first-class thanksgiving is a major mission for an army at war. >> there is a lot of stress put on our soldiers and service members being away from family and friends. but, in truth, the resiliency of being there with my comrades, you do the best can you. >> reporter: the army, like any family, has its traditions. one of the oldest is having the entire senior leadership dawn their dress uniforms to serve the soldiers. >> it's a great opportunity when we had the opportunity to give back to the soldiers and come out and sib them. >> it was -- i was intimidated. not by the peopley ising food but i was. >> this was the best thanksgiving away from home. this is good food. >> reporter: even for the united states average, serving -- army, serving thanksgiving dinner for 750 people is a big job and that comes with an equally big shopping list. fort meade won the award as the top dining facility in the army this year. >> had to get 400 pounds of turkey, 200 pounds of ham, 140 pounds of roast beef. about 150 pies. >> reporter: and while many would rather be closer to hope, they know many of their fellow soldiers are even further away in harm's way. >> it's a tradition of my family, to be in the service. i wanted to join myself. when it comes to the food, it's good. >> i still have the longing to be with my family and i am just graduated from bct. i am here for ait training. so, i'm not used to all of this moving around and stuff. >> reporter: a reminder how even in the army a small taste of turkey can bring a small taste of home. at fort meade, tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. the georgetown university students arrested in egypt could be headed home as early as tomorrow. sweeny and two others are being released today. that were accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces fighting with protestors in cairo. a judge ordered the release this morning. sweeney's mother tells fox 5 as long as her son can find the passport when he gets back to his dorm in egypt, he will be on the flight home tomorrow. speople are dead after a small plane crashed in arizona last night. the pilot hit three young children and two other adults were on board the plane when it slammed into the supersuspicious mountains east of fix and exploded. the pilot just picked up the kids for thanksgiving. two business associates were with him and there is no word on the cause of the crash. a high school senior is in trouble after the kansas governor's office tattled on her for one of her the 22s during a school trip to the state capital. emma sullivan tweeted the quotes, just made mean comments of the governor and told him he sucked in person. someone in governor brownbecome eck's office saw it and forwarded it to the school. the principal schooled her for embarrassing the school and she now has to write a letter of apology. just a moment a if you want to have that after dinner walk, well, the weather is cooperating for you. we do have a couple of days of rainfall and that got out of the way in time for thanksgiving today. the high pressure is in control and that gave us the sunshine we had and we have more sunny days in my forecast, temperatures are above average and that will be the trend for a bit and a cold front on the way that is going to give us some changes. today, we reached 61 degrees at national airport; the same at dulles and 60 degrees at baltimore and some temperatures not bad. a light southwesterly wind and that is important because it was gusty today and with some winds. the wins are very much on the calm side and we're seeing some good changes there and 48 degrees at gaithersburg this hour. we have 50 at baltimore; 52 at quantico; 46 degrees to the south at fredericksburg and 43 at culpeper and to that west, 50 degrees at cumberland and that is the same at gaithersburg and this is what is going on with our clouds. absolutely nothing. the ridge of high pressure is keeping all of the clouds at bay and a few here to the far northwest. other than that, the ridge of high pressure is going to stay in control over the course of the next day or so before it starts to gradually slide out and we get to deal with the frontal system. in the meantime, if you have family anywhere else celebrating thanksgiving, a few clouds in the upper mid-west and more of those over the areas toward the northwest and where they have some rainfall. the same to the southwest and along the east coast
