brian, the effects of child sex abuse last a lifetime. nobody knows that more than the victims. people who have lived with the nightmare for years, some suffering in silence. tonight, we talked with a man who said the university can still do good. he said they should react like hunes and less -- humans and less like lawyers. when the catholic priest sex abuse scandal support the church into a tailspin, mark sorano was one of the victims to speak out. when he heard about the allegations against jerry sandusky. >> immediately my thoughts went to the victims. up fortunately, a crisis like this and a scandal that surrounds a coverup, victims can get lost in the process. we have seen that already with what happened with coach paterno. there is so much focus on him and sympathy for him and that is misplaced. >> reporter: wednesday night in state college, that sympathy grow louder. students shook lampposts and leave turned the media truck, frustrated over the firing of legendary coach joe paterno. he understands the student reaction but there is something they need to know. >> coach paterno helped create this crisis because he and the other officials at the university shows -- chose grand image over the welfare of the victims of abuse. >> reporter: he knows from experience what sex abuse can do to the per. >> they're probably currently struggling with drug addiction, substance abuse, alcohol addiction and emotional problems, problems with raps and authority figures. the list goes on and on and on and these are already at-risk youths and dishandled kids. >> reporter: he spent years working with s.n.a.p. >> so far, penn state university is acting more like catholic bishops in simply minimizing or obfuscating the truth. they need to reach out to the victims right now. >> reporter: he said the university and paterno have a chance to create an environment where people feel safe coming forward, the first step toward healing. >> once you stop being a victim, you can become a survivor. seeking the help, the support of family and professional help, if that is what you require, there is absolutely hope. there is a better day ahead. >> the pokeswoman for the u.s. department of education told me they will be doing site visits and interviews investigating whether penn state may have violated the cleary act, a law that requiresollens -- colleges and universities that get federal financial aid to disclose information about comb -- crime on or near campus. the school can be fined 27,500 per violation. this saturday, punxsutawney phil state will know what it was. matt ackland was there when the memorial was rededicated. >> reporter: in november 1931, president hoover dedicated the memorial. john phillips souza can be seen in the old picture conducting the marine band. 499 names of men and women arep scribed on the memorial. all of them district residents, including the name of phillip bailey, the unkill monica bailey -- uncle monica bailey came to honor. >> lived in the district for many years. >> reporter: for years it was upsetting to monica and many others to see the memorial in such disrepair. trees were overgrown, the marble discolored and yards from the reflecting pool, few knew what it represented. >> for several years, it was worrisome. what is going to happen with this memorial? is it going to stay or, you know, what will happen to it? >> reporter: finally, after years of ignoring the memorial, the federal government agreed to spend millions to restore it. it now stands as beautiful as it was 80 years ago and is the focus of conflict. the district leaders say they will fight it. >> and today, we in the district of columbia, intend to make sure that this memorial remains dedicated solely to those veterans of the district of columbia. >> although the memorial was built on district land, the money to raise it was raised by district residents. those on the memorial, it was their mothers who spearheaded the investigators found the vehicle used by the armed men in the kidnapping abandoned in a nearby up to and they're currently gathering evident that will hopefully lead them to wilson ramos. no contact is made between the abductors or family and authorities. the authorities confirmed he is alive early this afternoon. he was in his home country preparing for the winter season with the team when he was kidnapped. this is the first known kidnapping of a major league baseball player. the relatives of players have been previously held captive for ransom and it shocked the country. >> in the headlines head coach the the first order of business is leading the 12th-ranked nittany lions against nebraska on saturday. it won't be easy for the coach nicknamed scrap for scrappy as in the way he played on special teams. paterno has been and was and is his role model, coach, menitor and boss since arriving on campus in the late '70s. paterno is one of the rare people in sports who is synonymous with his
