d.c.'s mayor. the metropolitan washington air force authority has an awesome job. managing the operations of reagan national airport and dulles airport, along with the dulles toll road and the on going construction of metro rail silver line. but an audit showing some board members were reimbursed $4800 for three meals and another paid more than $9,000 for air fare to perugie at the last minute has been a distraction. >> anyone in a private organization that conducted themselves like the air force authority would be fired. >> transportation secretary, ray l ahood fired off an angry letter to the authority. expressing outrage at questionable contracts. ordering the termination of all contracts with former board members and former employees. demanding that the board tighten travel procedures to eliminate wasteful spending and be more transparent with open meetings. the head of citizen's against government waste says some important projects could be in jeopardy. >> one of the problems with the silver line has been the lack of accountability, the board abuses of power, and questionable ethical practices. >> the authority responded in a statement, saying we have revised the travel policy for board members and employees to reflect best practices of the airport industry. we are revising the authorities ethics policy to clarify regulations regarding conflicts of interest. we have ended, or in the process of ending all professional services contract with former board members and we are committed to working closely with the accountability officer appointed by the transportation secretary. >> that statement from the authority's board chairman, michael, and president and ceo, john potter, says they will discuss their progress in more detail in public board meetings on september 5 and september 19. brian. >> all right, karen tonight. developing in maryland, the haggling and training continues at this hour in annapolis. house members work on a bill to expand gambling in the state. include building another casino in prince georges county. supporters say they are confident the bill will be approved. >> it's not as chaotic as it might seem. it's a normal part of the process. >> opponents of expansion say building a casino in prince georges county will hurt casinos already approved. it was approved last week, waiting to see what the house decides. the house of delegates is giving preliminary approval. the house version differs slightly from a senate bill approved last week. the house bill would make pet owners liable for dog bites only if their dog is wandering around and not on a leash. the center version holds all dog owners responsible, whether their dog is tether ed or not. minimum wage workers rallied in support of raising the national minimum wage. they want it increased from 7:25 to $9.80 an hour. a report found more than 20,000 d.c. workers would benefit from the increase. >> what is interesting is, raising minimum wage would create jobs. 99% or poem who make minimum wage are the ones most likely to spend money. as you spend more money in the economy, the economy eventually -- >> i'm making $8.25 an hour. it's very difficult for me to get back and forth to work. >> the country can't afford to raise the minimum wage and any increase would hurt small businesses. biting remarks on the campaign trail today. the president and challenger, mitt romney, attacked each other's energy policy. romney accused president obama's bad behavior. >> firing up coal miners in eastern ohio, republican mitt romney today, unleashed an assault on president obama's energy policy. the president targeted coal country with regultions. in a pitch romney hopes will flitch this battleground into the republican column. >> you probably heard the president say he's for all of the above. and i wondered what he meant, because i see how he has been waging war on coal and i wondered how he could say that. then it came to me. he's for all the sources of energy that come from above the ground. by promoting one of those energy sources from above the ground. wind power, trying for a second straight day to paint the new republican ticket as radical. this time for opposing a tax credit that puts them at odds with key iowa republicans. senator charles grassily and governor terri branstad. >> he said let's get rid of them. he said that new sources of energy, like wind, are imaginary. his running mate calls them a fad. >> then the president took a swipe at the legendary story about romney once transporting his family dog on top of his car. by noting the republican recently mocked the wind industry. >> that's what he said about wind power. you can't drive a car with a windmill on it. i don't know if he tried that, i know he has had other things on his car. >> romney campfired back the president is trying to distract from the economy, adding in a statement, quote, after complaining about making a big election about small things, president obama continues to embarrass himself and diminish his office with his unpresidential behavior. in waterloo, iowa, ed henry, fox news. drug abuse is the biggest drug problem in the united states. according to the country's drug czar. prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic. 49 states monitor the use of prescription drugs, but missouri is the one holdout. tomorrow, he will lobby state leaders near st. louis to try to change their minds. a man is in jail after he tried to sexually assault a woman. the accident happened on sunday afternoon. investigators say frank walked up behind a woman and inappropriately touched her. police found him hours late sleeping on a bench. officers found pornography in his backpack. he later committed a sex act while he was in police custody. dry conditions continue. shawn yancy is everywhere at 11:00. >> dozens of wild fires continue to burn. a fast moving fire in central washington burned at least 60 homes. another fire in northern california is under control, but firefighters are worried about dry conditions and triple digit temperatures. one other fire is now burning about 50 miles outside san diego. a toddler was killed in a house explosion on long island, new york, today. 14 others were hurt, including five police officers, two firefighters, and neighbors. firefighters say a propane leak may have caused a blast. neighbors say they could feel the explosion up to seven blocks away. >> and a texas preteen isn't allowed to play football because he is too big. the 12-year-old is 6'3". seventh graders cannot take the field if they weigh more than 135-pounds. the boy os mother says she will fight so her son can play ball. brian. a local couple is trying to keep the memory of every years old. the edge on d.c. tonight. other violent crime is up 10% compared to last summer. according to the website, 43% since this time last year. a few percentage points, homicides are down 23%. for the last two years, a local couple has been dedicated to marking every murder case in d.c. and remembering every victim. now the future of their homicide watch project is unclear as the couple heads to massachusetts. fox 5 photo journalist met with them tonight to remember some of the murder cases that struck them the most. >> takes the approach, that we don't need to decide. >> the community built around the site is stronger than anything i ever worked on. >> people that write in every day and comments and e-mails and tell me when i'm out on the beat that the homicide watch matters. it's hard, you know. i heard about, i got news, i received a fellowship and i'm so excited for 12 hours. and then i went back to work at d.c. superior court and walked in the door and oh, i have this terrific opportunity in cambridge that i have to leave this behind in order to do it. >> mark every death, follow every case. and that makes it hard to step away. >> the cases that we covered and left on the site right now will remain on the site for ever. shortly after we started homicide watch d.c., there's a report in columbia heights of a young woman's body found in a trash can or a dumpster. and sometime later that we learned that this young woman was ebony franklin. the family and friends were talking about on twitter, on facebook, on homicide watch d.c., and that people in the neighborhood were talking about, too, because it was so horrific. >> and it wasn't so much the case that sticks out to me as one piece of evidence. this is the case where just before the murder happened, someone who was at the scene called 911 and for eight minutes, he is on that call trying to get help and it is gut wrenching, because it's, you hear him pleading with the operator, send help, send someone, and five minutes into the call, you hear gun shots. >> never been funded. the couple is trying to raise $40,000 to hire interns. if they can't raise money, the website will go dark. a major makeover for a local mall and your chance to hit it big in the lottery. up first, redeveloping a local mall and hopefully a community. number five, a ground breaking ceremony for the new laurel mall. the old mall will be torn down and a new center will be built in its place. the plans include an apartment, stores and restaurants, city leaders hope it will be a new community gathering place. number four, americans are apparently ready to hit l mall again. retail sales rose by 0.8% in july. that's better than expected and the highest number in five months. it is good news because spending is key to the u.s. economy. number three, virginia students didn't do as well on a new, more rigorous state required math test. officials say it was expected and it provides a solid foundation for future achievement. aimed at better preparing students for college approached graduation employment. >> number two, the obesity epidemic is growing. virginia ranks 15th in the nation when it comes to obesity. maryland 22nd. d.c. down near the bottom at 47. mississippi is number one, nearly 35% of the adult population is obese. and number one tonight, if you pick the right numbers, you could be a millionaire tomorrow night. the jackpot, the power ball jackpot, that is, now stands at $320 million and it may be climbing. now, power ball is played in 42 states including maryland and virginia and the district of columbia. and brian, that's tonight's fox 5 top 5. the weather has been rocking and rolling out there. we sort of, for once, dodged the bullet. >> that's right, the old d.c. split. stayed north, it's been fairly active up around baltimore with several tornado warnings up there. in terms of what's going on right now, things are beginning to calm down just a little bit. beautiful shot tonight. i love this new tower camera that we have. we can see things so clear. zoom into the capital tonight. we start again with sental radar. gives you a sense of where it is now versus, put it in a time lapse for you and we'll be able to see where all this is coming from. still active up around baltimore with thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings, but not like it was earlier with the tornado warning going across there and we have other activity down to the southwest. here in the city, we have stayed dry tonight, maybe there has been a sprinkle or two, but the storms have stayed away. we have an active situation, mostly north of the city of baltimore right now. maybe towson gets clipped and it continues to move up towards i-95 and hartford county. coming right out, a very strong storm that passed over. a lot of lightning in these thunderstorms tonight and a lot of rain, too. so there is a flash flood warning in effect for baltimore county, baltimore city, as well adds howard county. this is going to go until 11:30. they have had several storms moving over this area tonight. and we are beginning to get more popping up. this is mainly in northern sections of anne arundel county, southern sections of howard county, just north of laurel up i-95. there's fairly heavy rain and off towards the bay. so, that is basically calming down a little bit. no more active tornado warnings, we hope, and just south of culpeper, you can see still a good storm here. this is all moving east to west at 20 miles per hour. little bit north, but mainly to the east now. most of this will misspotsylvania, but it is moving up towards stafford county and southern sections of fauquier county and prince william county. that's what we are watching tonight. it looks like we are beginning to see drying back out to the west. the frontal system will move through overnight tonight and that will take away the majority of our chances for showers or storms. 81 here in the city. it's not cooling down too much. frederick 72. martinsburg 69. lows tonight, lower 70s here in town. middle 60s out in the suburbs. there could be a shower tonight. tomorrow, sun and cloud, temperature of 87. here's the deal for tomorrow. with the flood coming up to i- 95. most of the showers or the thunderstorms will stay i-95 to the east, if you recall last saturday. it was pretty much the same type of setup. 87 tomorrow. beautiful on thursday. lower humidity 89. scattered thunderstorms back in the forecast on friday and then changes for the weekend, much cooler. it does catch for 11 yards. he plans to g back to his rough teen, catching 100 balls before practice and 50 after. he said he was focused too much on blocking and understands adjustments to the position will come with time. >> i wasn't comfortable. first getting, my back was tightening up. i'm not used to being in the three point stance. now i'm feeling like i'm getting more and more comfortable and getting some real life game rep. i think it helps out a lot. i've been doing what i had to throughout camp and i have to keep getting better. they love my progress so far, at least i hope they love it
