office. the boy was playing with the gun and it went off shooting him in the chest. this was the scene off west franklin street and hagerstown early this morning. we now know the gun was a .22 caliber semiautomatic baretta. police say it only contained 1 bullet and the gun was not stolen. now we're trying to find the gun's owner. we talked to a volunteer firefighter who was across the street when the shooting occurred. he said accidents like this aren't common for that community. >> it's a shocker for this town and i know it's going to send this town for take loop for a few days, but i -- a loop for a few days, but i believe the town is resilient enough to bounce back. i just hope there's a lot of support for the parents and child and i hope we find an answer to what happened really fast. this is a place to raise your family and for this to happen it kind of pumps your brakes a bit. >> just a few hours ago we got word the little 3-year-old boy has been upgraded to stable condition. his sister was not hurt. in fact, she ran to get help when the gun went off. police are still looking for the person who threw a loaded gun into a bush where anyone could fine it. fine-- find it. a news edge exclusive, city kids sent off to summer camp. some remember it as an ugly experience, one that has law enforcement investigating. tonight we're hearing from a man who saw our story and just had to reach out. fox 5's beth parker shows us, he says it's time for a change. >> i said oh, no. >> reporter: oh, no. that was vernon woods' reaction when he saw his old summer camp on the news. >> it gave me the chills. i was shaken a little bit because i can remember how terrified i was then and it just brought that back and it took me right back there. >> reporter: the story on fox 5 took him back to being a 13- year-old boy. >> up until i saw your story i thought my experience may have been an isolated deal. >> reporter: camp brown in st. mary's county was shut down. it's run by the boys and girls clubs of greater washington. last week the club sent a letter to parents acknowledging inappropriate fight club behavior instigated by counselors. vernon woods says that was going on back when he attended camp brown in the late '70s. >> part of their entertainment had gladiator fights, you know. they would pick two guys, youth, take around the side of the cabin and let you go for it and occasionally the counselors would fight one of the kids. >> reporter: woods says counselors cheered. what if you didn't want to fight? >> you got beat up. that's. it you don't have to fight. you got beat up. >> reporter: he says fights went on for hours. >> it was just like another activity as if it was a scheduled camp activity. >> reporter: woods said he didn't get much sleep at camp because he was always waiting for that creek of the cabin door. >> it was like the door would open and it's like here we go. >> reporter: once he says he tried to escape. >> i was terrified. i wasn't much of a fighter as a kid. all i wanted to do was just get out of there. i even attempted to run away one time. >> reporter: he got caught. >> bloody noses were common. busted lips were common. >> reporter: over the years woods would still think about it time to time. >> over the years i just tell people don't send your kids down there. it was like my first time out of the city and, you know, it ruined it. >> reporter: a spokesman for the boys and girls clubs of greater washington declined our repeated requests for an interview. woods says he doesn't want to see the camp shut down. he says it just needs better management and counselors who are not teenagers. he says it's basically kids watching kids. in washington beth parker, fox 5 news. the edge on d.c. tonight, d.c. police on the lookout for a man who may be trying to lure young boys. in april a man was distributing flyers in an american university park neighborhood to offer tutoring. this week a number of other incidents have occurred. >> on monday, august 6th, a complaint was received. this was an anonymous complaint in the mt. pleasant neighborhood of a resident who was allegedly in possession of child pornography. on august 7th a nude adult male reportedly made overtures to three juveniles in the swimming pool locker room at wilson high school. >> wednesday a boy was walking on 36th street northwest when a driver offered him a ride. the suspect may be driving a blue four-door chevrolet. d.c. police also searching for two gunmen who robbed a d.c. superior court judge. judge ronna beck was held up near 17th and crittendon street last friday. beck was walking with two people when the gunmen announced the robbery. no one was hurt. beck had her purse, car keys and judge's gang stolen. they were later recovered. police are learning more of the allegations of abuse against a man accused of molesting a girl at a home daycare center. fairfax county police arrested elwood thomas june 7th after a 14-year-old girl said he touched her inappropriately when she attended happy land daycare in annandale when she was apparently between the ages of 11 and 12. the daycare is closed now. police believe there may be more victims and ask anyone with information to come forward. a manassas man will spend the next 23 years behind bars for his role in a prostitution business run by a local gang that recruited and trafficked high school girls. daniel dove found out his sentence. besides being punished for gang involvement he was sentenced for committing two armed robberies and manassas and gun possession in fairfax during a burglary even though he was a convicted felon. martin o'malley is raking in the winnings tonight after his gambling expansion bill gets the green light. fox 5's maureen umeh is everywhere at 11:00. >> maryland lawmakers passed the gambling extension bill during the second day of the special session making the way for a sixth casino to be built in national harbor and will allow table games. the maryland senate voted to change the state law to create a strict liability standard for owners of all dogs, not just pitbulls. authorities at dulles international airport say two planes clipped each other on the taxiway this afternoon. a jet and express commuter plane suffered minor damages. it's estimated the planes were traveling only a few miles an hour when they made contact. authorities say it happened as one plane was preparing for departure and the other was arriving. the army private accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of government secrets has tried to get his case thrown out. private bradley manning says he's endured harsh treatment the past nine months warranting a dismissal of the entire case against him. manning says he was forced to sleep in poor conditions. manning could take the stand in his defense during a hearing in october. a news alert from l.a. tonight, a small plane crashed into a neighborhood near westwood. the pilot was killed, no one hurt on the ground. an faa spokesman tells the los angeles times the pilot declared an emergency shortly after leaving the santa monica airport. we're following a developing story out of afghanistan. for the third time this week an afghan security officer turned his gun on american troops and opened fire. fox's conner powell has more from kabul. >> reporter: they are supposed to be participates, afghan and american troops -- partners, afghan and american troops fighting side by side rooting out the taliban, but once again afghan security forces turn their weapons on their u.s. mentors. three special u.s. force were killed today after a commander in helmand province attacked the american troops reportedly luring them into the ambush with the offer of dinner. a taliban spokesman said the afghan policeman escaped and is now hiding with insurgents. these so-called green on blue attacks are on the rise, this the third of its kind this week alone. >> those isolated indents will have no effect on transition and on the quality of our forces. >> reporter: but this year alone more than 30 u.s. and international troops have been killed by members of the afghan security forces including two who were shot in the halls of the afghan ministry of interior this past winter. these attacks have seriously damaged the relationship between afghan and american troops and raise alarming questions about the capability of the afghan security forces. for now u.s. commanders insist they must press on and continue training the afghans. in kabul conner five. >> getting into the weekend, got a lot of big events. in annapolis got a big concert tomorrow. the ravens are practicing at navy stadium. >> i think you'll be kind of right there. showers possible east of i-95 tomorrow. it's not an all day rain. don't worry about. that you may have a couple passing showers. we'll go from there. we were supposed to have more than thunderstorms this evening than what we have had. earlier this morning when the showers and thunderstorms went through, they may have called down the atmosphere a little. we're trying to get some in here. we need the rain. we're not talking about severe weather, but we do need some rain to come across. a look at sentinel radar down south and west there's a little shower so you can see just up around hagerstown. that's really no big deal at this point. we'll get closer in here. here's culpeper and fauquier county and spotsylvania county up to prince william county. this is all kind of coming up from the southwest. it's hard a hard time staying together once it's crossed over the mountains there, but it looks like it may try to reenergize a bit farther down to the south and west. you can see it tracking up to northeast, a little lightning in place here, not much, but if it keeps coming on this trajectory, if it holds together, it should at least stay together to bring some rain to prince william county back up maybe as far north as fairfax county. who knows? if it stays together and it's forecast to stay together, could bring rain into the district. overnight tonight there's a chance we could have more showers and maybe even thunderstorms, certainly still possible till this frontal system gets closer to us and tries to push through overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning. otherwise temperatures in town will make it down to about 72 degrees or so, perhaps a little cooler in the suburbs. some showers tomorrow, high 86, but again most of the shower activity tomorrow will be i-95 to the east. that means in the city you're hit and miss. maybe there's a shower or two, better chances out towards the bay and shore. farther east you go, greater chance for rain. sunday is looking good, warmer, less humid, lots of sunshine out there. this is the rain we're tracking this evening now. frontal system is way back out to the west. all of this is happening ahead of the front. 72 tonight, 69 gaithersburg, upper 60s north and west. tomorrow with some sunshine, temperatures back up into the middle 80s, again east of town, better chance for rain. showers east tomorrow, a few clouds, looks really good sunday, real good monday, more storms coming in tuesday afternoon and evening, mid-week of next week we dry out, maybe a little cooler, little less humidity. have a great
