crossed the median and slammed into her truck. the impact was so great it pushed that metro bus off the road and it then slammed into a tree. we saw some of the cleanup crew here removing shattered pieces of windshield. parts of the buses that was tangled around the fencing here and around the tree are quite an impact here. and also, in the worlds of one neighbor, the skid marks across this median perhaps tells a story of what happened here. witnesses do tell us that the truck collided with the bus as it was headed to lake forest mall. there were ten passengers on the bus, nearly everybody on the bus was hurt. most of the injuries were minor. but the bus driver had to be cut from the bus. fire officials tell me that she was conscious when they finally were able to extricate her from the metro bus and she was air lifted to a hospital for treatment. the pickup driver, however, did not survive. >> we are confirming one fa fatality at this time. we have approximately ten patients that were treated. >> reporter: and once again, that 13 year veteran of metro, the bus driver, is the most seriously hurt of everybody who was on that bus. and if you can see, the graphic remains of that metro bus. you can understand why she was so badly hurt in this collision. now it's been nearly seven hours and rockville pike, the northbound lanes are still shut down. they have released traffic to two of the southbound lanes, but there's an interior lane is shut down as well. now, the metro bus is hooked up to the tow tracks and they have a caravan of vehicles. we expect redskins. not for the hearts and minds of their fans, but for the team itself. it's corporate headquarters and one day perhaps a new stadium. fox 5 is live now with our newsroom with more about this developing story. bob. >> wisdom, it's no secret the redskins want a state of the art training complex with an indoor practice field. many of the team's fans less than thrilled making the trek on game days. that's why some area officials are planning ways to lure the skins away from ashburn. >> today's military bowl at rfk, the only big time football game in the nation's capital this year. d.c. mayor, vincent gray, on the sidelines dreaming about the days the washington redskins played on this field. >> we want to bring them back to the city. this is where they belong. they are the washington redskins and they should be in washington. >> not just to play, but to practice as well. mayor gray and two d.c. council members recently going to florida to visit the tampa bay buccaneers new training complex. >> and by the way, they are only 500 yards or so from the stadium. raymond james stadium. they have it all right there together. we had a wonderful time viewing their facilities. it's a facility i would love to see us have in the city. >> what are the chances to have it here? >> we need to work with the team's ownership and work to make it happen. it's a long ways out to ash bourn. >> training facility since jack kent cook owned the team. >> a little rfk. >> this is where district officials want the redskins to move to, but prince georges county also want them. as county land available near bowie state university is conducting a feasibility study right now. >> i'm sure our good friends in washington and virginia are eager to attract them or keep them and prince georges county is eager for the game. >> we met with the redskins and the team from the state of authority met with the redskins, interviewed them. had a tour of their facility. >> the deal to bring the redskins to landover 14 years ago had important strings attached. >> under the 30 year lease the redskins have of prince georges county. prince georges county owned the right of first refusal. and the county has essentially said we intend to exercise that right. >> what about it mr. mayor? >> we have to be the only professional team that has the name of one place, practices in another state and plays in a third one. we want to rectify that and bring them home. >> the ball rests squarely in the redskins hands. they have 16 years to go on their lease to play in landover, but could leave ashburn at any time. officials in the district and prince georges county admit there's no public money available to dangle as bait. wisdom. >> it's a good thing to talk about. maybe a change of scenery will get them back to their old winning ways. a news alert in d.c. tonight. police looking for two people who robbed a 7-eleven store in northeast. it happened shortly after midnight on maryland avenue. no one was hurt. investigators are checking to see if this robbery is related to other 7-eleven robberies that happened in the district in the last week. police believe they are closing in on a man wanted for slashing the rear ends of women at area mals earlier this year. shawn yancy is everywhere at 11:00. >> wisdom, fairfax county police say they believe the suspect left the country, but they have a good idea of where he may be. johnny is the man accused of cutting women's bottoms as they shopped. nine slashings were reported between february and july. he is from peru. fairfax county police say they received information a few weeks ago that he was possibly spotted there. they are working with officials to determine if he can be arrested and brought back to the u.s. it is no secret the park enforcement in the district is aggressive, but a new report shows the district is writing about 5300 tickets a day. that means d.c. brought in more than $80 million last year on parking tickets alone. recently added new speed cameras, which raised $10 million every year. skate boarding on frederick city property could be a crime. police are asking to make it a criminal offense. right now, it is only a civil. wisdom. a major development on the virginia gop presidential primary tonight. according to cnn, newt gingrich says fraud is a reason he's not on the virginia ballot. gingrich said 1500 of the signatures he turned in were voided after being fraudulently collected by a paid campaign worker. candidates need to submit 10,000 signatures to get on the ballot. only ron paul and mitt romney made it on the ballot. >> well tonight, the focus is on iowa with just success days to go before the first caucus of 2012 presidential race. a new war opened up on the air waves. fox 5's tom fitz germ fitzgerald has the story. >> no republican should speak ill of another republican. but with no clear national front runner in the iowa caucuses up for grabs. the gop candidates are throwing new money and energy that going after voters and each other. >> less than a week until iowa's caucus and republicans are going negative. >> it's about serial hypocrisy. >> ron paul went after newt gingrich, but he's not alone. >> to have somebody that was a massachusetts moderate. >> mitt romney didn't like that description of him, so he is firing back. >> together, american university professor says with romney leading in new hampshire, iowa's first caucus could be some candidate's last chance. >> there are five or six candidates, all who have dreams that lightning could strike and they could be the nominee. but they realize it's not likely to strike in new hampshire. so it's got to strike out there on the great plains in iowa. >> and without a strong national front runner, the campaigns are betting the big dollars they are spending on ads pay off in big numbers at the iowa polls. for all the spending one candidate has decided to avoid iowa all retailers. americans spent more than $35 billion online this year. but are they spending too much? the fox business networks adam shapiro has more. >> it's yet another sign that the american consumer is returning in full force and once again, the online retailers are cashing in. >> it's very good news that they are feeling better. you have to remember that this is consumer confidence index up from the depths. >> according to.com score, u.s. consumers spent more than $35 billion online over the holidays. that's after consumer confidence reached an 8 month high in december. in all, internet sales for november 1 through the day after christmas were up 15% year over year. and according to analysts, we can expect more consumers to start turning to the internet to shop. >> it tells me one is simply a transformation in the retail sector from brick and morter to online retail. >> while a jump in retail sales is usually good for the economy, another report suggested that americans could be over spending. according to first data, a company that follows consumer payments, credit card spending was up 7% in november. in december, another increase. consumer report says that on average, people plan to charge $768 this holiday season and that spending could be a double edged sword. heavy borrowing during the housing boom triggered the meltdown and plunged the u.s. into recession. in new york, i'm adam shapiro. you know, for some people earning extra cash is as easy as dropping a few pounds. starletted a program in colorado that pays adults up to $150 every three months for losing weight. 8500 people are taking part in the program called weigh and win. each week, they go to one of 12kiosks and step on the scale. they receive a gift card based on how much less they weigh. and the insurance company actually saves money in the long run. >> weight loss is as effective as million grams or colon cancer screening or blood pressure control when you speak about the amount of dollars you spend. >> plans to add another 10kiosks indication year. they are located many medical facilities. no word on if they plan to expand this program outside of colorado. time now to chat about a little weather action. see what's going on outside. gary is here now to break it down for us. >> it's not as windy. what it was earlier. it's still breezy out there. temperatures are quite cold and will continue to drop over night tonight and i think all things considered, tomorrow will be more comfortable than today because it's not going to be windy out there. i don't think we're going to have as much sunshine tomorrow than what we had today. so you new york , this evening has been nice. i wanted to show you that we had the winds calm down quite a bit in terms of gustiness. they really dropped off. no more gusts being reported across the region here. you have to jump the bay to get to the eastern shore. stevensville, 21-mile per hour wind gust. cambridge 21-mile per hour wind gust and overall, the winds are lightening up and the temperatures out there are really dropping off. we are sitting at 36 degrees here in town. manassas down to 27 degrees. culpeper 28. you have relatively clear skies, which is what we have now. we have a few clouds out there. it's not enough cloud cover to keep the temperatures up. about 5 to 7 miles per hour. that's what is happening. especially in the suburbs. cold up in pittsburgh at 24 degrees. finally some cold stuff up here in new york. they are at 16 degrees right now. chicago is 29. so it's cold, but it's not bitterly cold. you'll have to wait until next week before we have bitterly cold air coming into the eastern sections of the united states. we have these lited l snow streamers. these are lake effect showers coming off of lake erie. but again, the winds are calming down, not only here, but up there, too. this calls down the lake effect snow. as it comes here, it will thicken the clouds a little bit. a breezy evening is turning into a very cold overnight. again, easily down in the 20s for lows in the suburbs. already out there in most cases. 30 degrees here in town. winds only out of the west at 5 to about 15 miles per hour. the way it's looking now, winds are calm and below 10 miles per hour. some clouds tomorrow morning, but some sunshine, too, as we progress through the day tomorrow, we should be more and more cloudy as we go on through. temperatures will get into the mid 40s and late in the day as the clouds thicken up, it will cool off. this is future cast. we start off, you see some sunshine. watch through the day, we progress with the increasing in clouds and then the snow stays back out to the west of us. it tries to bring a sprinkle through here late tomorrow night, which wouldn't surprise me with the disturbance moving through. it looks like on friday, we city dry, but contend with clouds. temperatures will be warmer on friday. going into new year's day, it looks gorgeous. loads of sunshine. we'll have temperatures actually getting up into the lower 50s and then for new year's eve and into sunday morning, temperatures will only fall into the upper 30s to low 40s and if you look through the holiday weekend, it looks better on new year's day. lots of sunshine and temperatures in the middle 50s. next week, first week of january. first week of 2012, it looks
