she says her daughter is the victim of cyber bullying, but instead of helping her daughter, the school gave her detention. fox 5's will thomas sorting this out for us tonight. >> it's certainly not the first time we've talked about cyber bullying and there appears to be an element in this case, but we think you may agree once you see our story, there were missed signs that could have prevented violence. >> i want montgomery county public schools to do something with their side on how to deal with cyber bullying and bullying. >> reporter: and here's why this germantown mother wants changes. her 11-year-old daughter tasia attends roberta clemente middle school. last wednesday morning this status message appeared on a classmate's facebook page. it appeared to be a threat. dasia douglas, don't worry. i got her. i got the hands. she about to get punished. translation, dasia believed her classmate wanted to beat her up. >> my daughter saw the warning, so she went to the office and asked to speak to the assistant principal which handles her grade level. the front desk receptionist said he was in a meeting. >> and then i said okay, i'll come back, came back, he still isn't there and then they weren't really paying attention to me, so i just left. >> reporter: later that same day. >> i was walking home and then i turned around because i heard like noises and then i saw like 50 kids coming down the stairs. >> reporter: dasia said those kids heard about a fight on facebook and came to watch just off campus. she claims another girl from school who posted that threatening status message wanted to fight and and got one. some of the kids captured the video with their cell phones. >> it was posted on facebook. everybody was asking where they could see the video, send it to me, i have it on my ipod. >> reporter: her mom printed some of the facebook messages from the students. anybody got the video? i got it on my ipod. i got the video. in the days that followed this frustrated mother made a police report, complained to the school and the board of education. now the videos have been taken down, but jackie reed said the damage to her daughter is lasting. >> with the facebook, the myspace i feel as though the schools these days do not know how to handle these things. we didn't have that before. i think that they need to take classes. they need to do something. they need to learn how to deal with this. >> reporter: a federal privacy law prevents montgomery county schools from talking about specific incidents involving students due to privacy, but a spokesperson told me all cases of bullying at any school given to any staff member or administrator are certainly investigated. we can also tell you the initial reaction from the school principal at daisha's school was she got detention along with the other girl. the mother called the school and was told from the principal we can't discipline one child and not the other. >> well, a lot of layers to this. where do the police stand here? >> the official word, it's under investigation. the protocol with cases involving minors is that the information was turned over to the department of juvenile justice. >> will thomas tonight. shocking developments in the death of a local teenager, rodney mcintyre was arrested over the weekend charged in the death of his 17-year-old daughter ebony franklin. according to court documents, mcintyre's phone record show he was in the vicinity where franklin's body was dumped. she had been stabbed and raped. dna evidence showed evidence of a sexual relationship between mcintyre and his daughter. he is being held without bond. maryland's flag is flying half staff to honor trooper first class shaft hunter who died in a crash on i-95 and laurel saturday. he was chasing after a speeding motorcycle when his vehicle was hit by a tractor trailer. trooper hunter was an 11 year veteran of the force, leaves behind six children. his funeral is friday. metro transit police want answers in a dramatic arrest outside the u street metro station last week. metro police were seen arresting a man in a wheelchair after he ended up on the ground, the whole scene caught on cell phone camera. fox 5's matt ackland has the news edge on this one now. >> we know tonight that an investigation is being conducted by the chief of the metro transit police department. the results of that investigation could still be days away, but one metro board member told me tonight he is wanting some answers after seeing the video. so many people have been talking about this video of two metro transit police officers arresting dwight harris. metro claims harris was resisting arrest and that is why he fell out of his chair, but the question is did he fall or was he yanked out of his chair and thrown to the ground? we did catch up with dwight harris today at the same spot where he was arrested. he had stitches and bandages on one side of his face. >> i did not resist any type of arrest. i'm disabled, as you can see. how can i resist arrest? >> reporter: council member tommy wells who sits on the metro board says he received an e-mails from administrators of metro telling him this arrest is being closely looked at. also we made contact with the american association of people with disabilities today. the acting director said officers should use more care when interacting with a disabled resident. >> you're not giving him a complete pass? >> absolutely not. if he broke the law, then absolutely. it was a citation, we're again no preferential treatment because you have a disability, but it's the way you treat the individual. >> reporter: all right. dwight harris wouldn't say if he planned to seek legal action in the case. we expect the results from that internal investigation to be released in the next couple of days. >> we'll pass them along as soon as we get them. are you sick and tired of the broken escalators in metro stations? you'll have to wait a while before they get fixed. right now nearly one in five escalators in the system isn't working according to a new report. metro expects to take nearly twice as many escalators out of service this year compared to last year to complete overhauls. the agency says it will be months before the escalators at dupont circle, fair but north and the square are -- farragut north and the square are moving again. >> it's washington d.c., the nation's capital. shouldn't we be able to keep our escalators running? >> yes. it's an inconvenience, but it has to be done. they will stop working at some point. >> escalators are no longer made which makes parts harder to find and as the transit agency increases inspections, they're finding more problems which leads to more outages. a developing story in the heartland, incredible images coming out of missouri where a monster tornado killed at least 116 people. tonight survivors are sorting through the rubble. the worst may not be over. fox's mike tobin has the latest. >> reporter: storm chasers caught video of the devastating tornado possibly at its strongest point. >> gosh, that is a monster tornado. >> reporter: 1/2-mile wide or larger where the base met the earth moving slowly 6 miles through the center of joplin. the town is effectively now cut in half. >> it was just crazy. it was like a jumbo jet was landing on your house. >> reporter: this video shot inside a joplin convenience store. [ screaming ] >> i love you. >> jesus, jesus, jesus. >> reporter: 30% of the buildings in the town were either obliterated or received damage. >> there's nothing really to help. it's just flattened. >> i really was not prepared for what i saw when i got down here. >> reporter: power is out. so is water. natural gas leaks threaten to ignite fires. search and rescue crews sift through the rubble trying to locate missing loved ones and the death toll moves past 100. >> i anticipate that number will climb. >> reporter: the same storm system that produced the joplin tornado spawned other severe weather, even more twisters across the nation. one tornado touched down in minneapolis leaving at least one person dead as it bull toed through the city. -- bulldozed through the city. with the rain and hail coming down once again the national weather service now says it was an e-f4 tornado that hit this town, the second most powerful category. to make matters worse, meteorologists are predicting the midwest is brewing more storms through the week, the kind that produce tornadoes. >> hoping for the best for them out there. . were you starting to think about planning your summer vacation? be news right off the top tonight. someone in our community is running scared after hitting a man and woman in the street and taking off. it happened at veers mill road and center hill street. fox 5's wisdom martin is on the phone now trying to gather more details. what do you know? >> reporter: we just talked to police and know it was a couple either in their 30s that had just gotten off a bus in the eastbound lane in the veers mill and center hill. they had gotten off the bus and were crossing the street when they were hit by someone driving a white bmw. witnesses say that bmw hit them and left the scene. now the update is that investigators do have that white bmw in their possession. they're working on identifying the driver of that car. as far as the condition of the couple that was hit, the wife has succombed to her injuries. she has died. the husband has nonlife threatening injuries. right now parts of this road shut down while the collision reconstruction team is on the way. so again we have a couple crossing the street hit by a white bmw. they do have the bmw in their possession. they're working on identifying ththat bmw. the wife has died. the husband nonlife the room, the gym, the pool not quite as amazing as the photos made it look online? from review sites to hotel websites themselves how do you know who to trust before booking a vacation on the internet? fox's matt alvarez went looking for answers. >> online the pictures looked nice and when i got there, i was completely fooled. >> the pictures are always better than when you actually get there. >> vacations are a big ticket item. they can be expensive. so you save money by doing thorough research before you go and you usually have a better vacation, too. >> reporter: checking out photos are a big part of that reserve, but the question is can you -- research, but the question is can you trust them? what could be more relaxing than laying out on a secluded sun splashed beach, but is this hotel throwing sand in your face? >> it was a little more hectic. >> i have been fooled once in a while. >> reporter: what about this hotel's pool? looks nice. what the brochure fails to photo online. the hotel said it's not a fake- out, just shot with a special lens. >> on the beach means it's a 10 minute walk. >> reporter: lesson for the savvy traveler, know what you're diving into. hotel pools like this can be strategically cropped to look a lot larger. the uncropped photo shows the entire pool and it really doesn't look that big anymore. the other pool trick, photos with pretty don't get burned at the buffet. the onlike pick of the fancy feast served at this hotel is a stark contrast to the mess that was uncovered in this photo fake-out. >> i read a lot of the reviews. >> reporter: websites like e- pinions and trip advisor have reviews written by real people. >> when you read those, you have to outweigh okay, this has this many bad reviews compared to this many good reviews. >> reading reviews online is much trickier than most people think. >> reporter: traffic expert pauline frommer says be leery when reading reviews. >> when you go online, try and sift out if what you're reading is actual opinion or just marketing. it's really hard to tell sometimes. >> reporter: but you can always trust reviews from friends and family, right? >> sure. that can be a great way to find places, although that person will have only gone to one hotel. so they may not know that right up the street there's a place that's 10 times nicer and half as expensive. >> reporter: not everyone online is trying to fake you out. >> who are the names you can trust? the big names that you know, frommer's, lonely planet, the travel magazines, newspaper travel sections. all of those are off i thought i'd show you some temperatures. today we got into the low 80s, officially 83 in the district, but check out raleigh at 91 degrees. there is an awful lot of big heat on the weather map and this area kind of stands out with st. louis coming in at 74 because they were in the storm zone today, but a lot of heat building and we will be tapping into that this week, our temperature now still 72 degrees. it will be mild overnight and you probably will at some point need to click on that ac. wanted to show you we still have tornado watches tone just south of joplin, missouri, that got -- tonight just south of joplin, missouri, that got hit so hard today. this entire region has to watch tomorrow because they are under moderate risk for more thunderstorms that could have tornadoes in them. tonight what we're watching here as this clicks off again -- i hate it when it does that -- watch this line coming through ohio. it's going to blink off. we could see a couple of those showers if it holds together around here in the early morning or very late tonight. that won't be a big deal. i don't think it will last long. i think the sun will come back out and then we have to watch the afternoon because that could be a whole different story. it does appear we could see some strong to possibly severe thunderstorm tomorrow and we follow that whole zone out to the midwest, the central plains where we find a moderate risk. that's a lot more dangerous and it does include joplin. we'll watch for the possibility of tornadoes in our region and watch for the possibility of strong storms that could have some hail and also could have gusty winds with them. here is your five-day forecast. our temperature tomorrow about 87 degrees, so it's definitely going to be a warm one. on wednesday we're at 85. now we do think it's possible that in the afternoon tomorrow and maybe a little later, maybe between 5:00 and 7:00, we'll watch a line of strong thunderstorms moving through. on thursday 87 degrees. we keep it going even into friday at 90 and saturday also some evening storms, a stalled out boundary. feels like the week leading up to memorial day, which it is. dave feldman is next
