bp protests in 50 cities today. a growing call if a boycott. trouble is experts say boycotting your local bp station is about as effective as those failed efforts to plug the massive oil leak. >> what do we want? >> reporter: outside bp's government affairs office in downtown d.c., a handful of protesters call on the federal government to seize bp's assets to pay for both the massive oil spill and its economic impact. >> we can't wait for 20 years of litigation. >> that company must pay all of the damages caused by their criminal negligence. >> reporter: and this isn't by far the only protest. there are growing calls around the country for a boycott of bp. we found customers split on the issue. >> i'm boycotting bp right now. i'm not going to their gas station. i don't think we should support the mess they made. >> reporter: others say the boycott misses the mark. >> i think that the boycott is not a good idea because it will affect the local retailers and not bp. i mean, they're not -- it's not really their fault what's happening. >> reporter: in fact that's the message from the service station trade association. bp like most major oil companies got out of the business years ago so most of the stations you see are mom and pop local owners. >> the stations look like the face of bp but they're just selling a brand of gas. and unfortunately in many cases they're taking the brunt of consumer frustration. they're just as frustrated as consumers are. >> reporter: and owners say the oil giant has many more outlets and markets to sell its product. >> it's quite possible that you could actually go down the street, not buy the gas at the bp, go buy from another station selling a different brand and that gas was actually produced and refined by bp. >> reporter: that's a hard argument to make when there's so much emotion around this oil crisis. there is even a facebook page asking for a boycott of bp. last we checked it had more than 300,000 members. >> a lot of emotion. roz plater live in the newsroom. thank you. bp is now trying to literally put a cap on the gushing oil pipe in the gulf of mexico. workers managed to cut the main pipe or the riser pipe today but it was a more jagged cut than they wanted. that means the cap will have to be a little looser than planned. the cap will still have a rubber seal to try to keep the oil from leaking but it won't be a watertight seal. >> we're not sparing any resources in terms of the amounts of effort, people and equipment we have to prevent oil getting to the shore. >> if the cap works, the oil will be siphoned to a tanker on the surface of the water but in the meantime the oil flow has increased an additional 20% as expected. that's because when they cut the pipe, they removed a cimpg that previously -- kink that previously slowed the link. we move on to breaking news out of northeast washington. a boy has been hit and killed by a car. police tell us it happened on montello avenue in trinidad
