>> it was looking at me growling. i could see it was chewing down a little bit on the dog. i fired one more round and it seemed to put it down. >> at first it didn't look like the dog angel was actually breathing. then all of a sudden she just started moving. the first thing she did was run over to austin to make sure he was okay. the news keeps coming. brian bolter now with the news edge at 11:00. two stories dominating the d.c. area tonight. mike shanahan officially the new head coach of the washington redskins. today we heard from him for the very first time. but we're going to begin with gilbert arenas suspended indefinitely. it's the latest blow to the wizards star. the nba's decision coming after he brought guns to the verizon center. en appeared to joke about it with his teammates. fox 5's sports director dave feldman working both those stories tonight. >> when you're under investigation, there's a right way to act and then there's how gilbert arenas has handled this. today the commissioner suspended the star indefinitely saying arenas is until fit to play in the game and adding the punishment could get a lot worse. arenas admitted to bringing four guns to the verzon center last month and last night perhaps the last true. prior to a -- straw. prior to a game, he pretended his hands were guns a his teammates were laughing. today no one is laughing. he said while i intended no harm or disrespect to the nba or anyone else, my gun possession at verizon center and my attempts at humor showed terrible judgment. i take full responsibility for my conduct. arenas will lose about $147,000 a game. he's scheduled to earn $16.2 million this season, the second year of a $111 million contract. speaking of money, our other big story tonight, the redskins just paid $35 million over five years to mike shanahan, their new head football coach and v.p. of football operations. he made his formal debut today, one day after signing his contract and two days after jim zorn was fired. shanahan was formally introduced at a 2:00 p.m. press conference, carried live right here on fox 5. he said that even though he has final say on all football matters, he was looking forward to working with g.m. bruce allen because allen wouldn't always agree with him. dan snyder did not speak at the press conference. perhaps a sign he's taking more of a back seat now, that more powerful football men are in place but snyder certainly was on the mind of his new head coach. >> you look at all the jobs in the league, coach. a lot of people threw your name around. why the redskins in. >> i think i explained it out there. anytime that you have an owner committed to the community, committed to bripg the siewp wowl to -- to bringing the super bowl to this town, that doesn't happen in a lot of organizations. dan has made that commitment. iknow what it means tom. as a head coach who could ask for anything more than that. when a guy is committed, he believes it and not everybody does. >> under dan snyder's wat, the redskins are 82-99. they missed the playoffs in eight of 11 seasons. shanahan made the playoffs in half of his 14 seasons in denver and has only two losing seasons. what are the players saying about their new coach. lindsay murphy went to find out. >> reporter: on monday afternoon as redskins players emptied out their lockers, they were hoping a new coach would be in place tonighter rather than -- place sooner rather than later. their wishes were granted. standing room only at today's press conference to introduce mike shanahan as the redskins new head coach. >> ladies and gentlemen, we got our man. [ applause ] >> reporter: along with members of the media and redskins front office staff, current coaches joe bugel and danny smith joined hall of famer sonny jurgensen and sam huff and current players watching shanahan with optimism. >> they brought him here to win. they didn't bring him here to sell redskins helmets or sell redskins shirts. they didn't bring him here to park cars at fed ex field. they brought him here to run this football team. strike up the music. we're starting again. >> reporter: for a franchises that has gone 82 and 99 on snyder's watch, shanahan's miring is a major step toward rebuilding the glory days. >> i think if you get a g.m. and head coach that wanted to work together, i think you're moving in a positive direction. i mean, it's huge for a coach to be able to go to his g.m. and owner and say these are the guys i need specifically because this is how i want to run things. >> we never had the right pieces. i think the rote coaching staff will bring -- right coaching staff will bring it to light good having a guy come in ith that type of caliber of coaching and winning behind him should be great for us. all we want to do is win. >> to have a coach this way. sue palka is keeping an eye on it in the weather center. >> reporter: one thing we don't have to wor about is whether or not this will be rain or snow. it's cold enough that this will be snow and in fact with temperatures so cold on the pavement, it may stick initially as well. the timing is mostly after tomorrow evening's rush hour. let's take a look at it on satellite and radar. nothing to see around the region now. a few clouds out there. it's still cold. it's still breezy. i know you know that we're watching a disturbance. it's sort of like one of those clipper systems that moves quickly out of alberta, canada. it has a frontal system with it. a lot of cold air behind it. the cold is what we'll remember more than the snow. we are seeing temperatures running 25 degrees below zero in casper. 7 degrees below zero in great falls and the push of cold air will be in here late they are week. overnight the clouds break up. suburbs will drop down into the teens. we'll be about 26 degrees. you do not have to worry about snow for the morning rush hour but it will be around tomorrow night. i'll show you the accumulations and we'll run the new models coming up. the suspect in last year's attack at the holocaust museum is dead. laura evans everywhere at 11:00. >> the 89-year-old man died today in a north carolina prison hospital. prison officials say james von brunn had a history of poor health. he was in the hospital awaiting trial. officer steven johns was killed in that shootout last june. a new report on the virginia tech massacre out tonight. it's the third version of that report. officials from the university say there are errors in the previous report. the new one or the old one said that the school president's office was locked after the april 16, 2007 shootings. a new report says the doors were open. it also provides other new details. defense contractor lockheed- martin looking to lower costs. they are planning to cut 1200 jobs by early april. the company based in bethesda announced in november they're combining two units in a money- saving move. multimillion dollar lawsuit in the wake of a terrible metro bus crash. tonight why the victim's family said the driver should never have been behind that wheel. plus, three police officers hailed as heroes. wait until you hear what they did to save a man's life. and later check out this critically injured is suing the transit agency for $30 million. it happened last september on florida avenue. the lawyer claims the driver of the bus should never have been behind that wheel because he sad a history of accidents. every single witness who saw some portion of this ?entses said she was speeding and running the light. >> metro says the driver received remedial training aft previous accidents. she was fired after hitting the jogger in september. the attorney believes the driver that face criminal charges. four d.c. police officers honored tonight t. all began with a gruesome display in the middle of street. the man stabbed in the head and bleeding badly. bob barnard tells us how the officers helped save his life. >> reporter: it happened around 7:30 tuesday night here at alabama avenue and g street southeast. a man stabbed with a steak knife during -- owe during an argument. police worked to save the life of 51-year-old richard thomas. >> the victim was bleeding from the side of his face. there was blood everywhere. there was blood all in the street, all on the sidewalk. >> reporter: anthony wilson says his girlfriend witnessed the mayhem from her apartment window. >> she thought the guy was dead but apparently they saved his life. i know he's gteful for the police. >> reporter: and so is d.c. police chief cathy lanier who stopped by roll call at 6d tonight to award the department's life-saving medal to the four officers seen in this photograph. >> i just thought this is something that is above and beyond what your duty expects of you and there's no question in my mind or anybody else's that you did save somebody's life and that's really what our job is all about. >> reporter: some officers stopped the bleeding with their bare hands. >> initially you're not thinking about any of that you just go in and dot job you have to do. -- do the job you have to do. after that you start thinking about the circumstances about it. >> possible night. it was about an ad campaign highlighting metro bus drivers who had driven a million miles without an accident. the poster showed a group of about 60 drivers. some drivers were photo shopped in the poster more than once. in our report we said we contacted metro for a comment and hadn't heard back. in fact we had heard back who told us metro is pulling the ads. we apologize for reporting incomplete information. metro has 115 so-called million milers and all are accident free. congratulations to them all. metro bus drivers, all drivers alike have to watch ourselves a little bit tomorrow after the evening rush. >> i think the timing, it has been slower and slower and that's good for getting our commutes out of the way. one thing i am worried about is this might be a small amount of snow but could have an impact because temperatures will be cold enough for it to stick. we're talking about an inch for spots but it might get a little slick tomorrow night. we'll keep you posted as we're watching all of this come through. i suspect we will have some snow falling during our 10:00 news and 11:00 news tomorrow night as well. on to the weather maps. want to talk about temperatures tonight. we look over a quiet d.c. and a snow free d.c. although some of you did see some flurries during the day today and also last night. it's going to be a cold one tonight. these clouds aren't going to hang around for very long. 19 for germantown. 18 for martinsburg. 26 for washington. 22 for bowie. a cold start in the morning. it will still be a little bit of sunshine out there in the morning. temperatures will be in the 20s. most areas. might be a few upper teens west of town. clouds begin to ticken up -- thicken up a bit after noon. should still be flurry free for the evening commute. we're going to jump ahead and talk about the weekend because you probably need to know it's going to be a cold one we. may not get to the freezing point on either ever the weekend days. 19 at night. windchills will be in the teens. unfortunately the breeze is going to be back coming from the same system that passes us by tomorrow. it will deepen as it gets out over the atlantic and pull in the winds and it will pull in more mountain snows on the order of 6 to 12 inches for the mountains. the ski resorts will be happy about that. max hd satellite and radar, we're just seeing a few clouds out here now. fly out to our storm and the leading edge of that has already come across illinois and into indiana. these do tend to be fast moving systems. not with a lot of moisture available. our system is moving across central iowa now and they're getting a lot of snow in illinois but even out there it's only amounting to a couple of inches. up through western pennsylvania it might be two to four. pausing this tomorrow night at 9:00 and we begin to see it moving in here on max hd futurecast. it will begin along interstate 81 probably about 7:00 or so. maybe a little bit earlier. we'll get that timing down for you certainly during our newscast. 11:00 tomorrow night we also see our light snow but what we also see is it's not really very solid and a bit of a dry slot begins to develop. by the time we get into 7:00 a.m. on friday, it is just about out of here. you might have some flurries left across the bay and eastern shore. it will continue to snow in the mountains that's for sure. but this is going to be a very minor amount of snow that we get. but again with the temperatures the way they are, it could produce some slippery spots tomorrow night. so it's calling for a dusting to an inch in the light blue colors which is most of the area. in the darker blue you could get a couple, maybe two to four inches in some spots along the mason-dixon line and certainly we'll see that out in the mountains and then some as this will not cut off for the mountains friday morning. it will continue. here's your five-day forecast. 37 on thursday. again the late snow which will likely be one by friday morning unless you're far east of town. 35 degrees. blustery and cold for the weekend as we've talked about. monday mostly sunny and 36 degrees. we still
