lee has been upgraded and it looks like new orleans may really get dumped on. >> right in the crosshairs of this tropical storm, such that officials have already issued a state of emergency down there. rain is already falling in parts of the south as tropical storm lee heads towards the gulf coast. this slow moving storm could drop up to 20 inches or more of rain in some areas in the next few days. tropical storm warnings are in effect now from mississippi to texas, a state of emergency already declared in louisiana. people in new orleans, much of which sits below sea level, getting anxious about a possible repeat of hurricane katrina. >> most of this is gravity drained. you know, this is an old section of town and the water used to just run off and when it runs off, it collects has -- irene, okay? even before the storm has made landfall there will be several inches of rain already and i mentioned in the story maybe as much as 10, 20 inches of rain. i think there will be spots up in louisiana, some of the southern patients could be isolated up to 2 -- parrishs there could be isolated up to 2 feet. this is satellite images, not radar. those are the highest cloud tops where the convection is, the thunderstorms, the red there and you look at that and have a hard time even trying to figure out where this storm is located since it's taking up so much of the gulf of mexico, but you might be surprised to find out this storm now is just offshore from southern section of the shoreline of louisiana there and it is very slowly tracking north. the latest information that we have on this, it's moving now to the north at 3 miles an hour. last time we got the report from the hurricane center it was moving 2 miles an hour, very, very slow obviously. there's no steering currents down in the gulf of mexico to push it around one way or the other. top sustained winds and some of those thunderstorms around the center 45 miles per hour. now one of the unique things about this storm we'll he see for the next several days, not -- we'll see for the next several days, not only how slow it is, but how erratic. these lines represent what we look at in terms of modeling information. they are all over the place with this storm. not only can they not decide when it will make landfall, but they can't decide how long it actually sits out over the warm waters of the gulf of mexico. brian, the longer it sits, the more it's going to intensify, but one thing is for sure. look at the consensus of those lines, those models. several days from now they bring what's left of lee right up into the midwest and i think eventually we're going to get rain from that and any time it's tropical rain we could get good rain and we also have, of course, hurricane katia out there. don't think it's going to be a problem for the east coast, but if it is, it will be compounded because of the rain we'll have from what's left of lee. >> a little later in full weather i want to talk about is it katia or katia? >> i don't know, katia probably. i think i've called it three or four different things at this point. >> i think shawn calls it caught ya. we want to keep it as -- place on there, temperatures all around the area in the lower 70s. showers today and most of it now is well down into eastern or pardon me, we were sections of north carolina and filling up over south carolina where there is a lot of rain tonight. down through new orleans here this is all moisture streaming ahead of what is tropical storm lee. look at this storm. the center of circulation is right up here, but it's tapping moisture back down to the south. so it looks like at least in the last few images here a satellite picture there's dry air here and it's trying to pull on in and that might try and separate things just a little bit, but if it splits the storm here, this could get a bit stronger a little faster because again large storms have a hard time getting stronger quickly, but if they get a little smaller, this could spin up a bit. there's a lot of warm air over the gulf of mexico. right now the storm hurricane center is still showing winds of 45 miles per hour, movement very slow to the north. look at this, all the way up. this takes you a track up to wednesday and it's only up in alabama as a depression and it looks like most of that moisture eventually will be able to stream up to the north, get caught in the west/east flow. so by the time we get to tuesday, wednesday, thursday, maybe lingering even into friday, we'll have that moisture from tropical storm lee up here into the midwest in the mid-atlantic. this is hurricane katia. winds right now back up to hurricane strength, 75 miles per hour, gusts to 90. look at the track over the next several days. we will be talking about katia through the weekend and into next week as she gets closer to the coast. right now it looks like she'll turn before she gets to the east coast. 87 tomorrow, a few showers possible, a few thunderstorms sunday and showers and thunderstorms in here by labor day. just some clouds overnight tonight, temperatures upper 60s here in town, mid- to low 60s in the suburbs. we selected the site near the oak tree. more than 100 million visitors have walked past that tree since 1963. from the new jobless numbers to former vice president cheney's new book, just some of the topics chris wallace and i talked about today. i asked him about the impact of that jobs report we talked about earlier ahead of president obama's job speech. >> there's no way to spin it, the recovery has absolutely stalled out at least when it comes to producing jobs. i think it was 150,000 jobs a month on average in the first quarter of this year. now we're talking something like 28,000 a he month and as you say -- a month and as zer august. there's no way you can spin it or try to play this. the economy just isn't creating jobs. you would say what could be greater, the president is going to deliver a big speech and this will be a call to arms, but after what we just went through on the debt crisis, i don't know anybody believes that the president can propose something, either one, that will work or two, if it will work that the republican majority in the house will pass it. so we got a big problem and not much of a solution. >> for the everyday american the debt ceiling argument not a how does this impact me now kind of topic, but jobs impact every single person. every single person can relate to that. do you feel like this debate can be different because if this gets too political and it's a lot of bickering and even the fight over what day president obama could speak, if it starts delving down into that minutia in the political realm, do you think the american public will get fed up? >> oh, absolutely. we saw in the polls the ratings for the both the president and congress went way down. there was a thing about throw all the bums out. the problem is i agree with you that jobs are certainly more instantly relatable to people than what the debt is going to be a decade from now, but the solutions aren't any clearer and there's two very different approaches. the president i think in a speech will call for extending some tax cuts for some stimulus spending and republicans are going to say that's exactly the wrong way, that what you got to do is cut spending, get rid of the debt and a lot of the regulation, repeal obamacare, repeal financial regulation. so, you know, it may be a more accessible issue, but i'm not sure the solution is going to be any easier to arrive at or a compromise. >> before i let you go on fox news sunday final on sunday morning here on fox 5 you also have somebody who has been kind of setting inside the beltway circles on fire a bit, condoleezza rice upset, colin powell upset, dick cheney's new book out. >> that's right. we'll talk to him sunday about some of the comments he made and we'll also ask things he hasn't been asked like what about jobs and the economy, what can be done? the 2012 race and we'll talk to him in depth about his health. he has had a real tough patch of it and our sunday panel will
