what's going on ? we're fine. we just figured since it's taking forever to pay off our mortgage, we might as well slow our whole life down. touch the ball. get rid of your mortgage faster. get an easy orange mortgage from ing direct. pay less interest, pay more principal, pay it off sooner. yes ! >> reporter: the situation remains dire inside of the wreckage zone. national weather officials say the massive tornado which hit joplin sunday is one for the record books. >> it is now a ef5 rating. this is the 8th deadliest single tornado on record. >> officials say 8,000 -- map. we are still in the search and rescue mode, why want to emphasize that. >> reporter: rescue work areses -- in joplin, missouri, craig bosswell. >> there are 1,001 stories coming out of the tornado zone. many of them touching lives in our area. >> tough to see the images, hear the stories and at times to get in touch with family and friends whose lives have been shattered. >> oh, no, it's worse than yesterday. >> from her home in columbia, maryland, donna walking speaks with her sister. a regional manager with the home depot in joplin. a few blocks away, there are neighborhoods that are flatten. >> reporter: it's one of joplin's wal-mart stores. >> it's a pile of mangled twisted metal and you think there were actually people in there? >> this family friend rushed to the store minutes after the tornado left. >> i believe i was standing on top of wal-mart. i have never seen anything like this. >> we spoke to bill by phone in joplin. >> a friend of mine, his girlfriend was killed and his baby boy has been -- her arms are up around the baby. >> one more grim story from the storm ravaged city reduced den den. >> and it's a small enough place that you would know everybody was touched on it. you will know somebody has been touched by it. >> donna said her sister doesn't know where she is half the time because many of joplin's trees and landmarks are gone. it will be a long time building back. >> take a look at this, incredible images coming out of the area. a tornado killed four people. you can see sue is down in the weather center. this part just keeps getting hammered. >> especially hard hit -- we. a little bit north or a little south of oklahoma city, so they did not hit areas heavily- populated, but this is the damage that was done tonight. these were monster storms. you mentioned the death count. that is expected to rise and many, many reports of homes destroyed. this is what is called a particularly dangerous situation. it was all up and down the i-35 corridor. want you to see what is going on right now out there. we will take you to viper because we want you to see this huge line of storms, including dallas texas, now warned for a tornado very close to the center of the city there, joplin is now under a tornado watch. we have a big line coming toward them. they will be under that watch until 3:00 in the morning. i just want to show you in addition to the ongoing -- two major developments in the story we have been telling you about continues since the week. two metro transit officers have been put -- the video shows them picking dwight harris out of his chair and one of the officers sticks his leg out of his chair -- harris was drinking alcohol outside of the station and refused to leave when asked. he was charged with resisting arrest and other minor offenses. the assault charge has been dropped. the rest are still under consideration. >> police who are investigating a deadly accident on the bw parkway. the accident happened at 6:00 p.m. near good luck road. another driver was hospitalized. right now, all northbound lanes are shut down north of route 410. drivers looking to get on the bw parkway from north avenue can use route 50 to the pelt way as an alternate. >> we have new details about a deadly pedestrian accident in wheaton maryland. a resource at the national zoo is charged with trying to kill wildcats -- the suspect as name is nico and she has impeccable credentials. city officials say she was trying to until vero katz. >> this is about cats and birds, the people who love them. f eric kirschner ral cats, it is estimated, kill 40 birds a year and have actually caused 33 species of birds to become extinct? investigative officers with the washington humane society were called to the apartment building someone added yellow crumbles to the cat food. at that point, the officer who was investigating, we ended up having it checked and it was rat poison. >> it happened to be very close to where the camera was located. >> you can see an imaage of a person going up to the cat food bowl. >> nico telephone, also a resident is the woman who set out the poison, charged with attempted cruelty to animal. she's a researcher at the national zoo, specializing in migratory birds. in this video posted earlier, she discusses the birds versus cats controversy. >> it comes up, i want to present photographic evidence that i like cats. this is not about cat lovers or cat laters. >> nico telephone has pleaded "not guilty" to the charge. he did not respond to our request for an interview and the zoo said since she's not working with the basic animal population, she remains on the job until the legal process plays itself out. >> still a very bizarre case. thank you very much. brian? coming up, citizens on patrol. it's lowering our crime rate and saving us money because in some ways, our citizens are acting as adjunc- t. how a few dollars is going a long way to fighting crime in a small time. >> residents upset over a plan to redistrict dc. i'll explain when "fox 5" news continues.  >> reporter: we are talking about 40 portable police radios that have been given to residents all over town so they could speak directly to police officers if they see something suspicious. this outside of the box thinking is what keeps crime out of their community and residents say this is about taking an active role in keeping cheverly safe. in this small town, communication is key when it up cans to fighting crime. that's why the police chief asked a group of citizens to key them up on police issued raid he yo's. >> because this is really the project more so than it is reacting to crimes in progress. >> reporter: the radios are part of the watch program. we made 48 arrests. >> the people with the radios are kept a secret. police don't want the bad guys to know who is watching them. >> i had the radio on. i heard the lieutenant talking to one ofousers. they had someone involved in a a break in and they were chasing him through town and i happened to look out outside and low and behold, i saw the person running across the street. >> there may be something coming down in a bicycle episode description -- and so you are able to relay that information if they come past your home. >> chasing the suspects on foot and we are joined by a number of cheverly residents and allow other responding cars to catch these guys. >> reporter: in a town of 17,000 people, every eye and ear -- >> people come, happy, feel safe and they stay longer. >> police take credit for a lot of things in this community. not in this community, i'll tell you without any doubt it's the citizens who are responsible for the crime rate in this town. the police are an adjunct and that's why things work so well. >> the cost of each radio is $350. the city is looking to possibly expand the program next year with 10 more radios. wisdom martin, tonight. >> now to a "fox 5" news alert, a huge reward is being offered to involve an armoured truck -- dunbar is now offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the stolen money. if you have any information, call police. >> dc public school system is investigating a middle school principal accused of fighting with two students. police have decided not a press charges against johnson middle school principal. parents of two girls accused her of punching a 12-year-old girl and fighting with an 11- year-old girl, causing that child to hit her head against the wall. >> dc city hall has been flooded with calls from residents angry over a redistricting plan. to do that, some residents will be in new wards, meaning they would have new leaders representing them. "fox 5"'s matt aclund attended a big rally. >> by law, this really has to happen. the issue, a recent census report shows downtown dc has grown in the last decade and two wards east of the river have not been able to keep up. it's the people in the middle. ward 3, capital hill, worried they would be pulled apart. they don't like it. >> reporter: some of these he res departments have worked for decades to turn their neighborhood around. they are a team and they want to stay that way. >> what has happened is that the people over the years have made it safer. we have had a unified community, we have built a strong diverse community, a lot of successes with the schools, with fighting crime. >> reporter: although a redistricting map has not been released, some worry because of the location, ward 6 could be pulled into other wards. eastern senior high school, the pride of ward 6 could go if the new lines come down 17th street. >> if you split our neighborhood down the middle, in a sense, we'll have representation in both. >> kingdom park is a perfect example of redistricting gone wrong. >> a lot going on in ward 6, i called the office and i get a prompt response, unlike other offices. >> michael brown chairs the committee in terms of drawing the lines. brown said he has no other choice. federal law requires leaders to draw new lines depending on how the population is spread out. >> no one likes to be moved or cut out after a particular neighborhood. but some things have to be done and we'll have to make the tough decision to do it. >> the new map being put together should be released to the public sometime tomorrow and it will be voted on by the committee on thursday. the public will have a chance to speak out before a full council vote, brian? >> there is a lot of deliberate ambiguity. it used to be done in private, now, it's being done in public. i spoke to joseph lieberman, loyal people who said the president should not have said what he said. in the end, there would be negotiations, but in some ways, it was dictating toen a ally and that's what some democratic party people are worried about. i talked to nancy pelosi. how is that for name dropping and she said to me, look, the republicans would exploit this whatever happened. they want to strip away jewish support, political in swing states like florida and ohio and michigan and instead of obama getting 78% of the jewish vote in those big states, maybe he gets 65, their hope, she said as he drops down to carter where only 40% of jewish americans voted for the democrats, so there are a lot of cross winds and everybody is trying to exploit this for their own political gain. >> i'll drop one more name so you don't have to. where was eleanor holmes? >> i'm so glad you asked that question because i'm like the hall monitor and donna edwards from prince george's in montgomery, who has been questioned for her lack of support of the state of israel was there in gleaming peak to draw attention to herself. eleanor holmes thornton was nowhere to be found. i called her and she called me back saying "i don't have to he show up to show my support." that's a nice rhetorical statement. >> democracy seems to be gaining a foot hold in the mideast and now this very public crack in our strongest aleanance in the region, it seems at odds with what is going on globally, doesn't it? >> yes, it does and i think the prime minister made a good statement saying "look, it's not in their interest to delay the peace process." he says "i don't know what is going to happen tomorrow." and he meant literally and even with countries they have peace treaties with. i thought he hit a homerun. he went to high school here. mit for college and he knows the id yom of america and he probably got a better reception here than he would get in his own lens lay tour. everybody who is anybody from mccain to kerry all of the entire republican and democratic leadership there. in terms of accomplishing a political objective in america, he did very well. >> great as always to he 150 you, mark. >> courtroom drama in the casey anthony trial. the suspect's attorney makes a bombshell revelation during opening statements. >> map . . o hus . >> family of a san francisco giants fan, brutally beaten at dodger's stadium is suing the l.a. team. brian stowe was repeatedly kicked and punched in the head for wearing his giants jersey. the suit claims that the franchise was negligent. a violent attack at the in donuts. greenwich village. the latest in a string of similar incidents. police are exmany inning the footage, but so far, no arrests were made. >> we are working a story caught on camera. a water rescue in the potomoc river. >> a transgendered woman afraid for her life after being beaten by a a mob. >> tonight, she tells us what went down. plus, more from the neighbor that rescued her. ow it started as a missing child case, then her body was found, now, the death of kaylee anthony -- >> a bombshell revelation from casey anthony's lead attorney who now claims two-year-old kaylee anthony drowned in her family's swimming pool in 200, weeks before she was reported missing. the child's body was event actually found stashed in the grass. >> how in the world can a mother wait 30-days before reporting her child missing? it's insane. it's bizarre. something is just not right about that. well, the answer is actually relatively simple. she never was missing. kaylee anthony died on june 16th. 200 when she drowned in her family's swimming pool. >> reporter: casey anthony, the child's 28-year-old mother, cried in court repeatedly, listening to her attorney. the defense team claimed that the child's grandfather, journal anthony, helped to cover up the child's drowning and casey did not report the child missing for 31 days because she abused by her father as a child. >> you will hear about ugly things, secret things, things people don't speak about. things that casey never spoke about. >> reporter: but prosecutors maintain casey anthony told lie after lie after lie about her missing daughter. >> the dispatcher tried to get information from cindy anthony that her daughter casey would not tell her where kaylee was. >> casey anthony is facing several charges, but the most important one, the most serious, 1st degree murder. if the jury finds her guilty, she could get the death penalty. >> it has certainly been a very busy weather season. we knew this would be a bad night because the storm predickion center said they were at a high risk. we understand that the tornado sirens are blairing in joplin, missouri. they have a tornado warning and we want to show you pictures from dallas because they did have to evacuate the stadium, there, actually, we don't have that now. we'll get back to that in a little bit if we can. around here, it has been quiet in texas. they have a tornado warning as well. people are being warned to watch the north side of the city as these crazy and violent storms are moving through. we are quiet in comparison. i wanted to show you one thing. we have had a little shower weakening, built up awhile ago, you can see this moving out into prince william county, so, you are getting a little downpour here and a few showers. they will be spotty, maybe a rumble of thunder in a few spots and that will be about it. we'll put everything in motion with our satellite and radar. you can see the last little bit of energy coming through. today for awhile, a severe thunderstorm watch posted for the city. other than one posted for howard county, we didn't get too much. different story to our south. we had a tornado watch through southern virginia and reports of large hail down there. we kind of got out of it, today, but central and southern virginia feeling the effects of that. want to show you where the greatest risk is, along this i- 35 corridor from wichita to oklahoma city. it has moved east and the line is right here. you can see it when we go over to our viper weather center. the storms as they are moving through. if you look closely, you can see some of the flashing boxes. those are the tornado warnings active right now. it includes dallas and you can follow that line up into eastern oklahoma and moving into joplin and kansas city. we'll have a number of other reports of damage coming. we already know we probably have ef4 tornado damage in the suburbs of oklahoma city tonight with more reports to come. >> back that the greatest risk map because we showed you what is going on with the high risk into the white. tomorrow, this moves into the mississippi valley and more populated areas. the only reason with the types of storms that we are not seeing a bigger death toll is because it didn't hit the biggest populated areas so far. the risk includes cities like st. louis and nashville and the slight risk doesn't get into dc, but it bumps into western portions of virginia, so there is a slight chance we could see a storm, but the theme will be heat and storms as we go through the next several days. tomorrow in particular might not be that storm iny dc, but it will feature temperatures close to these. as we go through our temperature trend, it's a steam bag. 85 tomorrow, probably not as widespread, but we'll pick up the activity on thursday again and friday, a hot day at 89, saturday, 87 degrees. now, your forecast tonight, we may have an isolated showers and thunderstorms. we just showed you that on radar. mild and muggy, 67 degrees. sunny, a hot day, slight chance of a storm in the afternoon, but not a great chance. we'll watch radar for you. at 8:00 in the morning. some clouds, 71 by noon. by 5:00, perhaps spotty storms around at 84 degrees. here's your five-day forecast and it's kind of a broken record as we lead up into big memorial day weekend. we'll keep it hot on saturday and sunday with temperatures in the upper 80s. we'll keep a close eye on the memorial day weekend trend and keep you posted as we roll through the week. >> of course, a big night for "glee" fans. sara is here -- i know you have been talking to fans ought night on the "glee" chat. what was the reaction to tonight's finale?
