affairs. call them for help. this earthquake makes us wonder how it compares to the quake in haiti back in january. we will take a look. on the left you see haiti. on the right today's damage in chile. scientists say today's earthquake packed 500 times more energy than the one in haiti. there was a lot of damage today but not nearly as many deaths. one difference is that many of chile's buildings are ma oto withstand earthquake. another is that the quake n chile started deeper in the earth and the location of the epicenter is a third key factor. >> if the epicenter was near a populated town, the town would be utterly destroyed. fortunately in this case the epicenter was off the coast. the people in chile have experience with earthquakes and were well prepared for this one. >> this type of earthquake has a nme. it's called a mega thrust. it happens when one plate drops down underneath the other. that type of quake creates prime conditions for dangerous tsunamis and we told you about warnings in hawaii. let's get now to gwen much you were watching this earlier and you gave us a brief explanation at 6:00 about what did happen. what is the very latest now from the weather perspective? >> reporter: we will touch on once again the explanation on that. ed good news is that hawaii is now out of dang. japan unfortunately seems to be on the radar for this. you know what? we will have a look and i will give you a little bit of an idea what is happening. this is something that really caused a lot of instability on the bot. the ocean and that is what prompted this whole thing to begin as it affected believe it or not all the way to hawaii. this raced its way across the pacific. this tsunami they can travel very quickly. just as fast as a jet airplane. 500miles per hour or more. believe it or not. only takes a few hours before it races its way to destination. once it reached the shallow coastal waters of anywhere such as hawaii, the height of the waves can crest up to 100 feet or more. that is one of the major things. other thing is that it's not the first wave that's the problem because each wave after that packs more and more of a blow and carries with it a lot more water. so as we talked about can be caused by underwater earthquakes and there are huge pieces that the ocean floor is made up of a reqest called places. as two plates collide and one pushes underneath the other, pressure starts to build up. that pressure can stand for so long before one can actually force its way on top and break free and spring forward. that in turn causes displacement of water and water is forced violently to the surface and that's what we know is a tsunami. it's a series of waves. not just one. they form and as i said they can travel quickly. they tend to get smaller as they travel from the epicenter but slow down once they get into shallow water near coastal areas. thing about it is when they are in the motion you hardly notice them. once they get on coastal areas and start to move their way through on to shore you actually get to see just how huge they are. how enormous they are and the impact that they have. as i said, each one brings more and more water with it. as it continues it will only get worse and we know the danger associated with thats in we do. good to know that hawaii is no longer in the line of fire. so many other people affected. we know you are watching it for us. thank you. as you know the internet a powerful tool in times of disaster. this is just one of the pictures we found on twitter. look at that. you
