[ music playing ] right off the top night, a shocking side effect to a routine vaccination. you heard her right. a regular flu shot gone horribly wrong. tonight the warning this woman wants everyone to hear. good evening. i'm brian bolter. >> and i'm sheila. tonight this lady was getting ready to run a marathon but tonight she is trying hard to walk, talk and eat. the vast majority of doctors say flu shots are case. in this case they said they found nothing wrong with a particular batch and that is what happened to her and now her life will never be the same. >> reporter: her she is the picture of health. she's a redskins cheerleader ambassador and an a individual avid. >> i was training for a marathon. marathon. >> reporter: ten days after receiving the shot, she came down with the flu. after that, her health spiralled downwards. she started passing out and had to be hospitalized twice. >> we went to an urgent care facility and they wouldn't even let her get out of my truck because she was seizing in the back. >> reporter: doctors diagnosed her with a rare neurological disorder. they think it was caused by a severe reaction to the flu shot. she now has difficulty speaking, walking even eating. during our interview, she had several seizures. the effects are irreversible. >> the symptoms will get worse if i use my voice or walk with these braces. >> reporter: she reported her health problems to the food and drug administration thinking there might have been something wrong with her vaccine. we also contacted the dpxt da and we were -- fda and we were told they found no problems with the particular lot of flu vaccines that she received. and the agency has not received any other reports of adverse effects from this lot. health experts stress that overall extreme side effects are rare. >> the flu shot is very safe for the majority of the public. and as i said before, your heart really goes out to someone who experiences this sort of thing thinking that they're doing something great for their wellness and their general health. but unfortunately, it does happen extremely rare cases. >> reporter: for her, she just happened to be one of those rare cases. >> i don't want this to happen to anyone else. >> reporter: desiree and her husband plan to visit the mayo clinic hoping to get more answers about this disease and how they can live with it. patients hospitalized with the swine flu were healthy people who did not have a chronic illness before they got sick. the cdc had previously said the majority of patients hospitalized by the virus had other health issues. another new report puts the average age of a patient hospitalized with m1 n1 at just -- h1n1 at just 32 years old. the average age of a person who dies is 40. it shows how serious the swine flu can really be. >> i think it is sobering that some totally healthy people suffered this very rapid deterioration from the h1n1. that is not the usual presentation, but it can happen. and as this strain spreads around the country, the numbers of people suffering from that have been increasing. >> the cdc says the best way to prevent getting the swine flu is to get the vaccine. they should arrive in doctor's offices and clinics sometime this week. we know that many of you still have question about the swine flu and the seasonal flu vaccines, and we have the answers. tune in to and killed two people and injuring three others. it happened at an apartment complex in northeast. witnesses say the courtyard was full of kids when someone pulled up in an suv and opened fire. we're live at police headquarters with the latest. bob, what do you know? >> reporter: brian, as far as we know, there is not a lot of information about the killers. this was apparently a drive-by shooting at 4:00 in the afternoon. part of an ongoing battle between rival neighborhoods. >> you have to sit down. >> reporter: bullets were flying and young victims dropping in this courtyard at clay terrace in northeast washington. we and dozens of others, including young children, could see the uncovered body of one of the victims at the bottom of a hill next to some steps. his mother and relatives standing by, nothing to do but grieve. >> it's very upsetting to have that many people get shot with all of the young kids around here. >> reporter: the five young men shot were all teenagers, gunned down in the middle of the afternoon. >> were there some witnesses to this? >> i guarantee there is witnesses. it's 4:00 in the afternoon. there is a couple hundred people out here. there is definitely witnesses. and it's somebody's child today. it's somebody else's child tomorrow. >> reporter: police are calling this a drive-by shooting. they're looking for a black suv with tinted windows. they're not sure if there was an exchange of gunfire but they have found different shell indications. >> this is like -- casings. >> this is like the third or fourth time. there's a lot of tension going on and a lot of stuff going on. >> reporter: she says her three young children are now in counseling because of all of the violence in her neighborhood. coming up on the news at 11:00, you'll hear what businessman beaten to death inside of his pizza shop. a man pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death. he was killed inside his pizza restaurant back in august. he is cooperating with prosecutors. prosecutors say the pizza shop owner was paying robinson $500 a week to stay married to his brother. also today prosecutors dropped murder charges against leon robinson who was also charged in the killing. one step forward now in the health care battle after months of riding legislation. the senate finance committee passed a bill. it requires americans to have coverage, taxes the health care plan and cuts medicare. fox 5 laura evans is here today with investments >> during today's debate a republican senator went against the grain to support the health care reform measure. today's vote now sets up a titanic battle to combine separate reform bill into one cohesive and understandable piece of legislation. >> reporter: according to president obama, the senate finance committee's decision to go forward with its version of health care reform is a small but much needed victory. >> good afternoon. as a result of these efforts, we are now closer than ever before to passing health reform. but we're not there yet. >> reporter: on tuesday, the finance committee voted in favor of a health care reform plan sponsored by max bokus. >> reporter: and for the first time in a longruning reform battle, a republican crossed party lines. gop senator voted to support the measure but it came with a warning. >> my vote today is my vote today. it doesn't forecast what my vote will be tomorrow. >> reporter: it cost $829 billion over ten years and requires most americans to purchase premiums. the office says it will ensure 94% of eligible americans. the pro pros al does not include -- proposal does not clup the so-called -- include the so-called public auctio >> it lowers the federal ficit, expands coverage and improves quality. >> reporter: but republicans say the plan taxes too much and insurers too few. >> and when it's all said and done, 25 million people will still not have any insurance. >> reporter: republins also argue the bill makes huge costs in it medicare and will lead to health care rationing. >> hundreds of bills of dollars will be -- billions of dollars will be cut. >> this bill is not perfect and we have a lot of difficult work ahead of us. there is still signature details and disagreements to be -- significant details and disagreements to be worked out over the next several weeks as the five separate bills from the senate and the house are merged into one proposal. >> reporter: what's next. a little more about that. it's a little confusing. there are now two reform bills in the senate, three in the house. committees from each will debate and then combine their bills in the coming weeks and then the resulting bill from the house and the senate will be negotiated and combined into one for a final vote. and the speaker says that could happen by thanksgiving or christmas at the latest. first he's out of the hospital and then he's back in. they're giving dc councilman marion barry another clean bill of health. he's resting at home now but last night he went back to the hospital. he spent the last week for dehydration and an infection. he celebrated last night by having dinner with friends. he had an allergic reaction. tonight he's home and doing just fine. a violent car crash on the gw parkway killed a woman and seriously injured a woman of the u.s. national soccer team. dave feldman is here with an update. >> u.s. national team charlie daveys is in serious condition. they said the crash happened at about 3:15 this morning in the southbound lane of the george washington memorial. he underwent several hours of surgery. a hospital spokesmen says his condition was serious but offered no further details. three people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. he was a passenger. a 23-year-old starter for the national team, he has had four goals in 17 international appearances. the u.s. team was in washington for the world cup qualifying game. the players were subject to to being in early and he was in violation. they don't know his soccer future. a family pet turning into a real life saver. >> the instincts of the family dog really paid off for a local family when he alerted them to a fire. the likely saving all ten people inside. as fox 5 thomas explains, monster's good deed has earned him a second chance with the family. >> reporter: a beltsville home is being sealed up with plywood. hours earlier tuesday morning, a fire crawled up the back of the house and spread to the roof. >> i'm happy just to see them here still with me. i'm very happy. very happy. that's all that matters. my family matters. >> reporter: evelyn and nine children inside asleep as flames inch closer and smoke began to seep inside. a family dog named monster sensed danger throwing himself against the sliding glass doors. >> he kept banging real bad. you could hear. and we heard crying and roof roof. the fire started outside. >> reporter: on the other side of the wall, all of the youngest children asleep together. evelyn says she locked the basement doors behind them to protect the kids at night. in the frenzy of the fire, she struggled to find the key. >> had you not found the key to open the door, it could have been much worse? >> it could vn much worse, yes. -- have been much worse, yes. >> reporter: evelyn only decided she would have to give monster away unable to pay for all of the food. she just changed her mind. >> my husband just told me right now, it doesn't matter. we have nine kids. make it ten now. because he's worth it. he's worth it. >> reporter: the family is intact but the devastation has turned their lives upside down. >> it's hard. you have to talk to the kids and let them know we're not going to be back. >> reporter: the sense of loss while still raw doesn't overshadow her gratitude for monster and his in stijts. we never would -- instincts. >> we never would have made it out. >> reporter: so as the family prepares to start over, he will be by their side we have another day in the low 70s. it certainly won't be this week. things are going downhill. i'm not saying it's going to be frosty cold here, but it's going to be chilly enough that you're going to wonder is this october or early december. in fact, we could even see snow in the mountains over the weekend. but things are still growing in some of the gardens and we want to remind you at my fox to be fun elling into town as we sgoe -- funneling go town as we go to the weather map. high pressure is going to start that process. about 20 degrees colder tomorrow than it was today. and this cold sayre going to hang around for -- air is going to hang around for the rest of the week. we're going to be watching a little rain that i showed you on true view right before the break. that will get into town late tomorrow night. most of the day tomorrow will be dry. showers could be coming in around dark or shortly after and hacking around off and on -- hanging around off and on for the next several days. i also want to let you know it will be cold enough that a frost advisory has been posted for the mountains and washington county, parts of the panhandle of west virginia, down west of interstate 81. watch for the scrapers tonight. you could be getting frost out there. and in the white areas which go all the way up to pennsylvania, that's a freeze advisy. so you're going well below three it degrees in the -- 32 degrees in the area. so the leaves out to be changing but the growing season just about over now. especially for areas out to the west. in spite of this, we still hit 73 degrees today. a little bit breezy. and, in fact, we're still seeing breezes out there. dulles at 22. we've had a front go through. the cold air is now kind of draining into dc. and it will be a little bit on the chilly side tonight. we are in the 50s. headed for the 40s. in fact, probably 45 degrees here in the district. we're already seeing a lot of 40s and 30s now up to the north, and that's the kind of cold air that will be supplied to us over the next several days. specifically i think 39 degrees for martinsburg. west of martinsburg it could be colder. 42 for a low in gaithersburg. 44 for manassas. columbia ought to drop to about 43 degrees. and that's just the beginning of what we think will be a fairly cold week. so instead of 73, tomorrow's high only 54. thursday only 49. that's not the low. thaingz the high temperature. -- that's the high temperature. friday 50. the rain doesn't get going until thursday. the clouds around today as the frontal system was coming through, but a lot of sunshine too. a very pretty day. the clouds will thick en towards morning and later in approximate the day some of the rain we're seeing out here to our west will begin to roll into town. and will is also a huge storm affecting california. they're going toet 2-6 inches of rain. especially central and southern california. future cast, what about rain for us. showing the clouds that will be around during the day tomorrow. it looks like showers will hold off until very late but we'll have a few around at this time tomorrow night. we go into thursday and we're talking about off and on cold rain, mostly showers. not the heaviest stuff. but it's possible that this stuff could turn itself into a coastal area of low pressure and that would affect us throughout the weekend as well. and so that means we keep rain in the forecast on a daily basis. again, 54 tomorrow with any showers developing later in the day. probably after 5:00 or 6:00. but
