. fox 5 all over breaking news right off the top. a woman hit by a metro bus. >> police are on the scene right now tryinto sort it all out. metro says the woman had just stepped off a bus in northeast when another metro bus hit her. fox 5's bob barnard is on the scene with the very latest. bob? >> reporter: shawn, we have just checked and are being told the victim is in critical condition at washington hospital right now. washington hospital center. she was a metro bus rider who had just gotten off a bus right there. you see another one passing on the side of mount olivet road. she was crossing the street when she was struck by a second bus around 6:30 tonight. the collision knocked the victim down the middle of mount olivet road. she was critically injured right in front of dwayne brown's eyes. >> the lady got off the bus and she went across the street and a bus went around it. by the time she got to the second lane, that bus was right there and it hit her. she flew right there where you see the blood. >> reporter: left behind on the street a pair of red high heeled shoes. that one there is underneath the bus that hit her. that's the victim's purse and here's a wig in the middle of the street. she was taken to the hospital alive but barely. >> i don't know why she wanted to cross the street so bad. the bus was -- [ indiscernible ] like two wrongs. i us a just sorry it happened like that. >> reporter: mr. brown said the woman had just gotten off this d8 bus stopped along the curb. he says it's the second bus that hit her. did she say anything? >> as soon as the bus hit her, i ran down. she was just unconscious. >> reporter: a metro spokesman says a veteran operator was behind the wheel of the bus that struck the woman. d.c. police are heading up the investigation, but metro says it will conduct its own internal review of what happened here. mr. brown and other people who were on the scene tell us that it appears this woman was in her 40s. again we've checked with washington hospital center metro and d.c. police. they all tell us this victim is still alive, shawn, but she's in pretty bad shape. >> bob barnard reporting live from the scene. we'll stay on top of this one. thank you. this lest accident comes a little more than a month of a another metro bus crash back on september 3. a bus hit amanda monkey. she survived. the driver did not follow proper procedure in that crash but d.c. police are still investigating. now to a developing story out of fairfax county. police right now are looking for the man who attacked a woman in reston. >> 19-year-old says she was attacked at a park and ride lot t. happened late this afternoon at the herndon monroe lot. fox 5's wisdom martin live on the scene now. wisdom, what do you know? >> reporter: shawn and brian, investigators have been out here for several hours going in and out of the woods. right now they're waiting on a search warrant so they can collect evidence from the crime scene and crime -- and a crime scene that is now part of the homeless area that they are investigating. the attack happened in the woods near the her don monroe park. a 19-year-old female was walking through the wooded area when a suspect grabbed her and pulled her into the woods. >> inside those woods she was sexually assaulted by the suspect. this happened in the daytime. this happened when people were walking around this area so it is of great concern to the police department. >> reporter: inside that wooded area, there was a homeless camp. >> it's been described to me as a wide ranging camp with several people who live there on a short term and long-term basis. >> reporter: police say when the victim was sexually assaulted in the camp, there was no one there. this man says he lives in the camp and was there just before police declared it a crime scene. >> somebody knew that one tent wasn't occupied because everything was pild in the middle of it. when i opened it up there was a blanket pulled out from the pile. >> reporter: investigators don't believe the suspect was homeless. he was wearing blue jeans, a camouflage hat and riding a bicycle. >> if he's willing to do it in the daylight, we have to worry where he might striknext. >> reporter: they're also waiting on the forensics team to come here and participate in this investigation. as of right now fairfax police say they don't believe this particular crime is connected to anything else they're investigating in this area. >> wisdom martin live tonight in reston. a possible break in another abduction case. laurel police have scheduled a press conference tomorrow morning. they say they have new information in the attempted abduction of three kids at a park along thomas drive last week. the kids say to men tried to lure them into the pickup truck. police say they have found that truck and identified a suspect. a wild police chase started in prince george's county, stretched into the district and ended in a crash. a cottage city officer tried to pull over a suspicious car in prince george's county. the car rapid the officer's car and -- rammed the officer's car and sped off into the district. the suspect's car slammed into a white van, the force so strong, the van flipped over. the driver of the van was sent to the hospital. three men inside that car took off running and got away. new tonight, more fallout from the firing of hundreds of d.c. teachers. one city council member is calling for an investigation following protests like this one today. students, parents and teachers angry with the -- angry about the layoffs. maureen umeh is in the newsroom with the details on the layoffs backlash. >> reporter: brian, this one is getting ugly. council member marion barry says chancellor rhee lied about the firings. he want as probe and now we're learning the washington teachers union is planning to take legal action to get those jobs back. anger and frustration voiced loudly by students outside mckinley technical high school in northeast monday morning. they continue to be upset over the firing of more than 200 teachers last friday, some of them from mckinley beloved guidance counselor the students say were in the middle of helping them with college applications [ inaudible ] >> we don't have a counselor [ inaudible ] >> reporter: school officials say the cuts areto help meet a $44 million budget shortfall but many here believe something else is at play. >> for you to fire two counselors out of four counselors and to leave an inexperienced counselor in place who has only been a counselor in high school this school year, that tells me that this is person personality and not objection. >> reporter: friday after some teachers were escorted out by police, students staged an informal protest. police were called n. some students were pepper sprayed and two people arrested. now the teachers union is planning to file a lawsuit. >> this is wrong. we're going to have to fight it on a legal front as strongly as we can. i think the manner in which this was done it allowed principals to be arbitrary and capricious. >> reporter: students took their fight to civil hall. marion barry is calling for the inspector general's office to investigate. in a statement he says, our students deserve the very best at home and at school. they deserve adults with whom they can trust to tell the truth. chancechancellor rhee has simply lied to them. >> we're going to fight. if we have to here every day, all day, all night, we will. >> reporter: in all 388 district workers lost their jobs. 229 of them are d.c. public school teachers. those teachers have been placed on administrative leave and will be paid until november, brian. >> maureen umeh live in the newsroom. bus troubles for some anne arundel county schools this morning. vandals introinto a bus lot and -- broke into a bus lot and cut electrical lines. officials say whoever did this knew what they were doing. >> it's disgruntled employees probably. no way to prove it. hopefully fingerprints -- we'll fingerprint every bus here. >> school officials were able to get enough buses back on the roads to get students home this afternoon. an australia man accused of sexually assaulting women in the area is back in the country. one of the victims who is now 17 years old came forward in february. she claims she was abused when 7. police are looking for more possible victims. in montgomery county, police say this physical therapist sexually assaulted a patient. police arrested arne reyes after the alleged victim came forward. she claim he offered to treat her without charge and during the examination she says he inappropriately touched her. thean now is on administrative leave. all the talk about the swine flu vaccines got you a little confused? the first doses of the h1n1 vaccine were given out in tennessee andeanian today. -- and indiana today. who is getting them? health care worker and at-risk children are at the top of the list. the first doses of the vaccine are inthe nasal mist form. doctors recommend all those in high risk groups get vaccinated. some of them were among the first to get building and right into that man's bedroom. that heart pounding scene unfolded moments after the man inside that apartment got out of his bed. tonight he's tell willing his terrifying tale to fox 5. sherri ly has more on his narrow escape. >> i was sitting in the chair. >> reporter: he stairs at the gang hole in his lanham apartment amazed he survived. he just sat down for a moment when a minivan crashed through his bedroom wall. >> when i came back and looked, the front end of it was sitting on top of the bed. >> reporter: minutes earlier he had just gotten out of that bed to get ready for a doctor's appointment. witnesses at the carlton east apartment say they heard the sound ever the van accelerating and seconds later the entire building shook. >> didn't know what it was, you know what i'm saying? when it hit, it sounded like an explosion. i've got bricks coming after me. >> reporter: a man was teaching his friend to drive. they were parked across the street. police say the driver hit the accelerator too hard t. shot over the sidewalk, across the grass and slammed into the building at high speed. brenda watty lives in the apartment above. >> he evidently this is the wrong place to teach somebody how to drive. they should be in a big open field somewhere. >> reporter: he opened the back of the van to help the two men out. his wife angela who was at work at the time broke down at the sight of the destruction. >> when i saw the big hole, i was devastated because i could have been laying in that bed. >> that's blessed. that ain't luck. that's god. >> reporter: he hit the floor when he heard the crash. the van stopped just feet from hitting. >> somebody indeed looking out for him. both of the men in that van could end up facing charges. the driver did not have a permit. we're learning more details about a bribery bust involving the d.c. taxicab industry. 28 of the 39 people under indictment were arraigned today in federal court. three of them the alleged masterminds accused of handing over more than 300,000 -- $300,000 in cash in exchange for fraudulent taxicab licenses. prosecutors say one of the men was in charge of raising money for the scheme. the other prepared the documents and that third one you just saw there delivered the bribes to the chairman allegedly who was working with police. the three men pleaded not guilty. just days after dropping his late night bombshell, david letterman returned to the air tonight with a big apology. audience members at today's taping say the talk show host apologized to his staff and said his wife that he does which he does extraordinarily so. >> reporter: letterman doesn't plan to say ch more on the subject but the tabloids and other comedians are having a field day. in midtown, lisa evers, fox 5 news. the suspect was roommates with one of the women that letterman had an affair w. police say he used pages from his diary along with e-mails and over information to try and extort david letterman. a chicago man charged with secretly making nude videos of espn reporter aaron andrews has been released from jail. michael barrett is accused of videotaping andrews. prosecutors saits i' not itself first time -- say it's not the first time he's done it. a judge ordered barrett released from jail with an electronic monitoring device and barred him from using the intern. a newborn baby kidnapped in tennessee has been found safe but he won't be going home to his mother. the state is taking custody of the baby and his three siblings. sources tell the associated press a family member may have tried to sell the newborn. an alabama woman is accused of posing as an immigration agent and stabbing the mother before taking the baby. police are trying to figure out if she acted alone. taking their message to the white house. some wore black to mourn the lives lost in the conflict. thers carried banners asking for an end to the war. the white house isn't saying how many if any troops wll be added to the war zone but they do say pulling out of afghanistan is not an option. fox 5's laura evans live in the satellite center with the latest. >> reporter: this may end up being one of the most important decisions president obama makes as president, whether to send thousands of more troops into afghanistan. today he met behind closed doors with his secretary of defense to discuss how to regain control as the taliban gains strength. fierce battles have claimed more than 220 u.s. troops so far this year. compare that to 155 in all of 2008. the latest and deadliest taliban attack was during a weekend assault on a pair of u.s. outposts near the pakistan border. eight service members were killed. some say this is proof more troops are necessary. >> the security situation is going to get worse and any hope of better governance is lost and the taliban will reemerge. >> reporter: a disputed election adds an extra layer of uncertainty. a ballot recount of the august election now underway. some lawmakers question whether voter fraud will prohibit electing a president that can fight the growing taliban threat. >> that is what we have to answer. no the whether we're devoted to solving the problem but whether afghans can do their part. >> reporter: they're at odds over how many more troops to send to the region. general stan mcchrystal has warned the. more troops are needed or the war could be lost. but with 68,000 american soldiers already in afghanistan, president obama has said it's more important to look at strategy first. >> one of the mistakes we can't make is putting the resource and troop question before the strategy question. >> what general mcchrystal has done is presented his opinion -- is presenting his opinion of what he thinks his role within that strategy is. our strategy is a regional strategy. >> reporter: the. will likely get an earful tomorrow when he meets with leaders from both parties. they will talk about powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit padang last week. you see people running for their lovers as debris falls on top of them. the hotel was destroyed. about 200 staff and guests were inside at the time. many of them died. one couple did get out safely. mother nature is not helping firefighters battle this wildfire in southern california. erratic winds are making it difficult to control. so far orders from officials but some are sticking it out for as long as they can. one family watched dozens of planes and helicopters try to douse a massive wildfire threatening the mountain ski resort of wrightwood. they had just moved into the house two weeks ago and can't imagine moving out. >> we just loaded up pictures and clothes that we would be devastate fundamental they were gone basically -- devastate fundamental they were gone basically. >> reporter: so far the fire has scorched more than 7500 acres of dense brush since breaking out on saturday. the flames started in the san gabriel mountains east of los angeles. >> i turned to my house and said goodbye, house. so this is a bad fire. >> reporter: the fire destroyed three homes in remote canyons over the weekend. >> we have flame lengths over 200 feet. >> reporter: the fire reportedly killed the dogs inside these cages. area homeowners are grateful for all the efforts to save their community. >> i wish i could give them a the day. it takes long foreit evaporate -- for it to evaporate out. not evaporate out. radiate is the word i'm looking for pittsburgh 52. columbus 51. even down to rally it's 59 degrees. so all across the mid-atlantic temperatures are a bit on the chilly side. we have had some high pressure today. and that's kept us nice and sunny. some clouds to the north. some clouds to the south. so we're right here in the middle where it's been so, so nice today. but we just showed you the snow out of north dakota. this is it. there's still some flying now. you see it in the white and the pink. that's the area of low pressure driving this entire system. it doesn't look like much now but it does look like it continues to move in our direction. it does pick up a little more moisture so that by tomorrow night and into wednesday morning, we're forecasting some rain around here. cool overnight, at least in town. outside of town down right cold. 44 for germantown. winchester 43. there will be spots early, early tomorrow morning with the clear skies and the winds just about at zero or calm that will be in the upper 40s before -- the upper 30s before it's all said and done. so bundle up tomorrow morning. it will be chilly for a time. but we'll warm up nicely. lots of sunshine. 71 eventually in the city so we should equal today's temperatures. warmer to the south. fredricksburg 72. centreville 72. and winchester 68 degrees. the future cast has us nice and sunny by tomorrow at 5:00. but there will be some high clouds spilling in. notice back out to the west, though, tomorrow night the clouds thicken up a little bit. and early wednesday morning we're going to have some showers here. nothing too heavy. and it still wants to get it well east of us by lunch time on wednesday. so we will have some sunshine wednesday afternoon and actually temperatures will be very, very nice, too. looks like they'll struggle up in the middle 70s before the front comes through and cools things down just a little bit. as we head into thursday, high pressure settles in so it's going to be very, very nice. a few high clouds tomorrow. 71 for a high. more clouds on wednesday, but the showers will be early. high temperatures get to the lower to mid-70s. then thursday, thursday is absolutely gorgeous. 74 degrees there. mostly sunny conditions. and friday back to some clouds. moly cloudy there but it looks like we'll stay dry. high temperatures pushing the mid- to upper 70s there. and then we're still forecasting for cooler temperatures on saturday. again another system coming in for saturday that will bring us some more rainand some cooler temperatures. but listen, it's not eight inches of snow so everything looks good if you ask me. >> you've got that right. thank you, gary. redskins won their neighborhood. animal control officers are searching for the critters before they attack again. >> reporter: they may appear cute, cuddly and harmless but sheriff's investigators say don't be fooled. this pack of wild raccoons captured on a camera phone detectives say viciously attacked a 74-year-old woman at her front door saturday evening. neighbors herd the victim's agonize -- heard the victim's agonizing seems for help. >> i was shocked because she was covered in blood. i didn't know until i saw the raccoons what had happened. >> they got both of her legs, pretty much down to the bone. ripped her achilles tendonned off of one leg. cut her head, her mouth. there were scratches all on her back and her chest. >> reporter: 74-year-old greaten whitten of lakeland heard some rustling at the front door. when she tried to scare them away, they viciously attacked her. >> she has large gaping wounds on her legs. they got her down and continued to attack her and for unknown reasons all of a sudden they broke off and ran away. >> reporter: animal control spent most of the day searching storm drains and setting traps around the neighborhood but so far no sign of the wild pack. >> i have three little children. one is a baby. and just -- i'm just fearful they're out there and that they would get, you know, a little person. >> reporter: while the victim will undergo intense treatment for her severe injury, the focus now is to find the raccoons and test them for rabies. polk county sheriff grady judd says with so many little ones in the neighborhood, there is no room for wild animals that have already shown what kind of violent aggression they're capable off. >> we'll never be absolutely sure even if we capture a lot of raccoons tonight that they are our suspect raccoons. but they will be dealt with and tested. who here wants to take a chance? you see these children? do you want us to take a chance? we're not going to. >> reporter: in polk county, grower ya gomez -- gloria gomez, fox news. a pennsylvania woman was mauled to death by her pet bear. police say she was cleaning the bear's cage when the 350-pound animal attacked. the woman kept the animal in a concrete cage behind her home. it's unclear what provoked the attack. the bear was ought euthanized. the woman also owned a lion and a tiger. a wild chase comes to a dramatic end with a
