presume it is her. police say they have contacted her family and have assumed corol of the investigation. it's now being treated as a homicide. state police found the body about 5:00 this evening in story at 10:00, shattered glass marks te spot where bullets pierced right through a woman's d.c. home. just outside, three people shot. now, we have learned a 16-year- old boy died in that gunfire. the violence comes as a battle rages overall hands on deck, a d.c. police department initiative, meant to prevent crimes like this one. matt is live with the story. >> reporter: this weekend has been a rough one when it omes to violent crime in the district. two people were killed, a total of four shot. although that was not an all hands on deck weekend, when there is one of those operations in place, we're told crime takes a deep dip. tonight we met up with a woman who has lived in the district over 50 years. after what happened to her last night, she'd like to have an all hands on deck operation every weekend. >> i'd be sitting right there like that. >> reporter: benny bellinger and her nephew spend most of their evenings right here in the living room. for some reason last night they decided turn in early and it's a good thing they did. a bullet came flying right through their living room window. >> and i heard the gunshots and i told her, i said, get away from the window. i thought somebody was shooting in the window or stairs. >> reporter: outside three people had been shot. 16-year-old antonio ward killed. so many bullets fired, even benny's car was hit twice. >> it did, right in the front. it went right through it. >> we're trying to stop the crime from occurring. >> reporter: on friday the chief told us she's doing everything possible to reduce violent crime in the district, although the police union is giving her heat about her all hands on deck operation. she says this targeted enforcement works. >> every all hands on deck, we have anywhere between a and 35% reduction in crime. >> reporter: but the police union disagrees with the chief and they also say the chief is bending the rules by not paying officers overtime during the all hands on deck. >> we can't tell the public we're reducing types with ahod because we know that's not true. >> reporter: meantime benny bellinger doesn't care how the chief and union battle it out. all she wants is to sit in her living room in peace. >> last week an arbitrator did rule in favor of the police union saying the chief did violate the union contract. that same arbitrator ordered the chief to pay officers overtime for the time worked during those operations, but the chief is appealing that decision and believes it will be overturned. >> and in the meantime residents just want some protection, matt. thank you. meantime a d.c. cop is under investigation after police say he shot a man in hyattsville this morning. he was off duty at the time and says he saw a man tampering with his personal car. it happened on nicholson street. the man shot is expected to be okay. so far no one has been arrested or charged with any crime in this case. preseason is over, now it really counts. the redskins got the regular season underway today against division rivals from new york. it was a struggle from early on, but there were redskin highlights, it just took a while to get to them and there weren't enough. system. washington hosted a weekend of protests. saturday thousands took to the streets to show their opposition to president obama's plan. today, a much smaller crowd rallied at the capitol in support of the president's plan for reform. the group called americans united for health care and insurance reform say they want to let congress know all americans need health care and insurance now. meanwle, president obama is on a full court press campaigning for his health care plan, but if the president is to succeed, analysts say he's got to put a stop to the skepticism from both parties surrounding the so-called public option. president obama left it to congress to craft health care bills and democrats had to defend the legislation in angry town halls during their summer break. now the president seems ready to lead the battle himself. he was at campaign mode in a rally in minnesota saturday and he plans more events later this week. mr. obama tells "60 mites" in an interview sunday he is taking full ownership of health care legislation. if it doesn't work, he says, he could be the one held responsible. but on the sunday talk shows, top white house aides continue to take a middle ground on the central question of a government-run insurance option. >> i'm not willing to accept that it's not going to be in the final package, but what he also said and what we've all said is that this is not the whole of health insurance reform. we should not let the whole debate evolve into this one question. >> reporter: 12 senators appeared on sunday shows to talk about health care. democrats for the most part echoing the white house line, expressing support for a public option, but indicating it's not a deal breaker. republicans standing firmly against the government option. >> the house bill is dead because politics apparently matter and the public option is unacceptable. so that's a good start if we can kill the house bill. >> reporter: republicans also raised questions about overall cost, expressing skepticism that cutting wasted medicare can generate hundreds of billions in savings. a family tragedy after a virginia toddler drowned in a backyard fish pond. it happened today in burke. he fell into the pond and later died at the hospital. police are now trying to figure out how he fell in. swine flu fears are spreading and fast. new hope that a vaccine may this burning boat off the coast of corpus christi over the weekend. crews first noticed the smoke billowing into the sky and then saw the fishing boat engulfed in flames. the men were forced to ditch the boat for a life raft. one of the men was burned over 20% of his body. both are expected to be okay. drugs found in a vehicle and now investigators want to know if that led to the death of a former advisor to former illinois governor rod blagojevich. christopher kelly was found early saturday morning in his home. just days ago he pleaded guilty to being involved in an illegal kickback scheme with o'hare airport and his booking company. kelly was under pressure from prosecutors to cooperate in the blagojevich investigation. experts think his death, though, is unlikely to affect the case. >> i don't know that he was the lynch pin to this case. that's probably what's somewhat ironic about this whole thing. they have john harris signed up, they have these wire taps. they have john weima. i don't know they needed chris kelly to flip to bolster thei case. >> blagojevich says he is deeply saddened by the death and his heart goes out to the family. an official cause of death has not been determined. a personal gesture between two kennedys now at the center of a federal investigation. the fbi is investigating a stolen condolence letter written by jackie kennedy to ethel kennedy after bobby kennedy's assassination. investigators believe someone stole it. the note has changed hands several times selling for as much as $25,000. in 2006 it showed up at a dallas auction house. no more apologies. that is the word tonight from congressman joe wilson. the south carolina republican found himself in the hot seat after he shouted "you lie" during president obama's speech to congress. now get federal money for health insurance and wilson yelled out -- >> you lie! >> reporter: you lie. wilson told fox his son called his outburst a town hall moment. the congressman also maintained it wasn't his intention but he thinks because of the attention he's brought to the issue the senate finance committee and the president have now said they'll make sure it includes verification provisions to make sure illegal aliens don't get government money for health care insurance. meanwhile hackers are attacking his website using phantom computers to overload the site and crash it. a person close to willson says it was down five hours. that could hurt his campaign financially because people wanting to donate can't while the site is down. overall he is not hurting. he has raised more than a million dollars since his outburst on wednesday but so has his democratic opponent, rob miller. cpare that to just $67,000 miller brought in the first six months of the year. house democrats are preparing aures st. louis formally rebuke wilson in the chamber next week. you heard wilson, he says no more i'm sorries. >> congressman wilson says a resolution against him only shows the democrats want to play potics. speaker nancy pelosi has said it is time to stop talking about wilson and stay focused on heal care. it has been one year, if you can believe it, since hurricane ike barreled brain tumor because of a cell phone. >> we were friends in high school, believe it or not, so we've kown each other over 40 years. >> reporter: ellie came to d.c. alone because her husband, alan, is notoo sick to travel. >> unfortunately this brain tumor has changed his personality drastically. i still love him dearly but he's a different person now so understand that. >> reporter: he has the same type of malignant brain tumor as ted kennedy and was diagnosed the same week the senator learned about his tumor. like the late senator, alan is not expected to survive. >> it was caused by his long- term mobile phone use. >> reporter: his doctors now blame his cell phone, which alan used several hours a day, every day, for more than 20 years. >> that thing was glued to is right ear and the tumor is on the right side of the head. >> reporter: she has an unusual situation in that her husband used a phone for an extraordinary amount of time. while it's difficult to be certain what the causes were of his brain tumor, the likelihood is quite great hat his hours and hours of being on the cell phone contributed to his brain tumor. >> reporter: dr. deborah davis helped diagnose alan and is one of dozens of international doctors gathering here in d.c. this week for a conference on the problem. she says people shouldn't be afraid to use their phones if thy take simple precautions. >> then the recession hit. >> so my income went down as the economy started tting iffy. our mortgage payment went up. and those two things, the collision of those two things caused the crisis. >> reporter: after six years of marriage, rufus and sara took in a roommate to save their home from foreclosure. the number of homeowners that are looking to rent out rooms is on the rise across the country. in fact one nationwide roommate referral service we spoke to said their listings of homeowners that are looking to share expenses are up as much as 25% over just the last year alone. renee drell of new jersey's home sharing, ink, says her business is doing even better. >> there's been a 44% increase in homeowners calling us, wanting somebody to come in so that they could have additional income. >> reporter: rufus and sara turned to craigslist, where roommate postings have doubled in the past two years. they found katrina allen. strapped with their ballooning mortgage and student loans, the $650 a month katrina pays is all the couple needs to keep their three-story home. >> if you were in their situation, what would you want to know about the person you were considering moving in? >> everything. i'd want to know that they weren't crazy. >> reporter: the couple went on instinct and no background check. >> we were really trusting. >> reporter: renee's organization does more homework, even asking... >> does this person get angry easily? how much alcohol does the person person use? >> reporter: it's been a year, and? >> being able to fully pay the mortgage each month, it's it's a day to get out and enjoy it. mother nature was very kind to us today. take a look at the skies tonight. not bad either. we've got clear conditions, maybe a cloud here or there, but really not too much to write home about at all. very, re nice conditions across the area and a little cool. a little on the nippy side in some of the neighborhoods. a clear, cool night outside. if you're heading out at this hour of the night make sure you dress warm. sunny start to the week, however. that's good news. temperatures are going to take a dip again, so be prepared for that. elsewhere as far as we're talking about the week, we are talking about a chance of some showers by the time we hit the middle portion of the week. no showers today, though. 83 degrees officially at national airport. 84 at dulles and 80 degrees at baltimore. warmer than yesterday, but we even have a little bit of a rise in the temperatures that will be heading our way as well. 72 right now at national airport, 57 at dulles. 64 at fredericksburg and 65 at baltimore. so it's not too bad outside. 70 at roanoke and 72 at charlotte along the mid- atlantic. in new york right now, 73 degrees. for tonight our overnight lows in the burbs will be a little cooler. temperatures into the upper 50s, even mid to low 50s in some of our neighborhoods. but overall some areas closer to the city will be actually into the low 60s. here's a look at our national satellite-radar composite. take a look at all this moisture here to the southeast. this is something we're tching very closely. as we move into the middle and later part of the week, some of this will edge its way a little more to the north along the mid- atlantic so we'll keep a close eye on that. a look at true view will show you we've got pretty clear skies right across the board. a ridge of high pressure in control and that's keeping us in control for tonight and gave us all the sunshine earlier today. that sunshine is going to be very evident again as we move through into tomorrow. take a look at the jetstream to the north of us. we're still going to be in the warm sectors. temperatures tomorrow warmer today than they were -- warmer tomorrow, i could say, than they were yesterday. then we'll see a little bit of a shift and temperatures will start to dip. we've got a back door cold front to keep an eye on and that will give us a big change in our temperatures. in the meantime for tomorrow, though, temperatures still into the 80s. pleasant day. we've got all kinds of sunshine to talk about and i'm happy to say that because things are going to change in the long term. we're going to see a temperature drop. wednesday, thursday, we'll head 10 degrees cooler than we are going to be in the monday, tuesday period. that's also when the clouds will start to roll in and we've got a chance of seeing some showers. a clear night in the meantime. cool wih light winds for tonight at 63 degrees. and then for tomorrow 85 degrees, once again warm and pleasant. the five-day forecast showing you that we've got a chance of some showers by the time we hit possibly wednesday. a 30% chance. thursday and friday it increases to a 40% chance so we'll keep an eye on that for you. back to our cold front moving in from the north, that moisture heading in from the south. that will set us up a little bit. the by the end of the week, though, we're back close to 80 degrees. not quite there by friday but almost. >> i like this time of the year but it also is the time of the year you feel like you need two changes of clothes. >> and an umbrella in the
