right now at 10:00, tragedy on the hudson. exclusive pictures of a helicopter and plane colliding in mid-air. thousands of people below watching in horror as the aircrafts crashed into the river. tonight, investigators are searching for victims and answers. authorities have recovered three of the nine victims presumed dead. one of them is a child. a crash new york city's mayor says no one oucld chave survived. tonight as the sun went down, divers are searching. it was a beautiful noon hour in new york when the tragedy struck. a plane headed for ocean city, new jersey. a helicopter on a sight-seeing tour both colliding in the sky. >> once you heard the blast, that was it, it just went down. >> i saw the plane hit the tail of the helicpter. the helicopter started spiraling and then we saw the plane go down. >> we have to show you the haunting images again. frame by frame you can see the mid-air crash. all of this happening as many people stood and watched from the banks of the hudson river. >> we look up in the sky and saw something fall in the water. then we see a plane minus a wing. it was spiraling out of corol and smashed right into the water and sank right away. >> reporter: today, mayor bloomberg rushed to the acdent site. early on, he said publicly he didn't believe anyone could survive a collision of this force and these conditions. >> we will, over the next hurs, remove the bodies from the helicopter or airplane that we found. at this point, our paramount focus is making sure that our divers are safe. >> reporter: this are a lot of questions here. how did these aircrafts get so close to each other? was there radio contract? was one supposed to yield to the other? answering those questions could take months. the first priority is recovering the victims. the next? removing the plane and helicopter from the river, hoping the wreckage will reveal additional clues. >> they will do a complete investigation before th announce their conclusion as to what happened and whether there are any steps that should be ticken to improve safety and prevent similar tragedies such as this. >> we are learning tonight officials say a pilot watching all of this from the ground tried to use his radio to warn the plane and helicopter moments before the impact, but it's unclear if the pilots received that warning. more details now on the top story. the areas of the crash is one of the busiest airspaces in the nation. smaller aircraft in that area are not controlled by air traffic controllers. instead, they use a special radio frequency, informing other pilotsn the area about takeoff times and flight routes. this is a still-developing story. we'll have breaking information as soon as it comes in, plus new reaction on the news edge at 11:00. closer to home, investigators are looking into what caused a plane to crash in maryland killing two people. this one happened in a cornfielnear tnytown wn air t bird with the engine and propeller located in the back. the victims' names have not been released. investigators say the man flying the plane was an experienced pilot. all right. the fox five storm force is working hard on our other big story tonight. a summer scorcher is not too bad out this right now, but just wait. tomorrow's temperatures could rise to dangerous levels. how high are we talking about? gary is the man we're checking in with for the answers. how bad will it get, gary? >> wye haven't had a -- we haven't had a stretch of real, real hot weather so far this summer. we've had a day here and there. highest temperatures so far, at least this summer season, for national has been 96. i think we tie that for tomorrow. looks like we'll jump right up into the mid, possibly even the upper 90s in some places. let me show you the setup here, too. big things happen overnight tonight. that is a warm front will slowly lift through. that really will allow the real hot and especially humid air to come up from the south and southwest. high pressure is centered offshore. that allows that onshore flow to bring the humidity in. so definitely tomorrow, the first day of it being hazy, hot and humid. our temperature trend here shows you not a good trend. 96 tomorrow. it's looking like monday will be the hottest day. is there much difference between 96 and 98? a little bit. even monday, the heat index will be higher. tomorrow touching 100 on monday surpassing 100. and then we cool a little bit as we start getting into the middle part of next week. we'll talk more about it. unfortunately, that's the students quarantined in china. the high school students were visiting china when one of them got sick. several later tested positive for swine flu. after being on lockdown for over two weeks, they arrived at dulles. we now see the happy reunion, jennifer? >> reporter: absolutely. all of the students who went to china together are home safe and sound and boy do they have stories to tell. they got more than they bargained for after getting caught up in a swine flu scare. three of the four who flew home tonight were hospitalized for several days after testing positive for the h1n1 virus. >> they still have to clear customs. >> reporter: four families wait anxiously for their teens to arrive from beijing. the relief and joy bubbles out of them when they see their children looking happy and most importantly, healthy. >> i had fun there, and i could have stayed longer. >> reporter: 21 students from the university of maryland left july 13th to learn about the chien ees culture and language. all were quarantined by the chinese government and some hospitalized when half the group got sick. >> almost everyone else was sick. i felt bad for them, but at the same time, i was glad that i didn't get swine flu and didn't go to the hospital or anything. >> reporter: 11 kids went to the hospital and 9 tested positive for the virus. being alone in the hospital was scary, but the actual virus wasn't so bad. >> i thoug it was just the flu. they said it was swine flu so i had tbe quarantined and had to stay in te hospital. >> reporter: everyone agrees the ordeals with hardest on their parents in the u.s. >> for me it was like, i won't like it, but i'll get through it. for them, we had no contact. >> reporter: at least they've all got good stories to tell now that they are home. plus, olivia got an engraved survivor's gift as well. >> i survived swine flu in china 2009. >> reporter: most of the students came home a little over a week august but many of them stayed longer to get in the trips they missed while quarantined and hospitalized. >> quite a story to tell, and i'm so glad they are back safe. thank you, jennifer, for that live report. reports say 1800 americans have been quarantined in china since the outbreak began. an out-of-control water cannon injures three firefighters in newburgh, maryland. the three volunteer firefighters were hurt by a deluge gun. that is a massive water cannon that shoots out water from the top of a fire truck. officials say the gun became dislodged and hit the firefighters. all three suffered nonlife- threatening injuries. a sme scare dousing riders on the green and yellow lines just before 9:00. police reported a large amount of smoke. earlier reports claim someone heard an explosion and investigators say it did happen. the incident did explode. now, if you are going to ride the rails, pack your patience for this weekend. for the rest of the work, now is the best time because congress is out, people are on vacation and ridership is lower than usual. you can check the details on myfoxdc.com. well, it's a day to remember. the nation's first hispanic supreme court justice is sworn in. sonia sotomayor became the third woman and first hispanic to be elevated to the nation's highest court. don't expect any big changes. the new justice is not really expected to schiff the balance of power as she replaces justice suitor. car row line shively explains. >> congratulations and welcome to the court. >> reporter: with that, sonia sot mier and the supreme court made history. sotomayor becomes the court's first hispanic justice, just the third woman and first justice to take the oath live on television inside the court building. president obama nominated her in may to replace the retiring david suitor. the senate confirmed sotomayor mainly down party lines, all though nine republicans voted for her. most democrats say her 17-year career shows she's a moderate well within the main treem while conservatives say she is a liberal that will bring her comments to the court. they will check everything she does in a month from now when the court takes a campaign finance case. a rare early hearing before the usual october start. most justices take at least one of these oaths in a big public ceremony at the white house. instead, sotomayor will have a reception there in her honor next week. >> we're learning more about the deadly shooting inside a gym near pittsburgh. surveillance video shows several women running for their lives. we learned the shooter first paused to shut off the lights before opening fire. meanwhile, the community is coming together to remember thvictims. mourners held a vigil friday night in collier township. family and friends comforted one another. a memorial of sting was to protect minors who had been using social networking sites to engage in prostitution either by choice or against their will. mees say because of those sites, the problem is much bigger than montgomery county. >> one of the things we he did learn is that it's not just a county problem. we had people responding here from ohio, new jersey, and then other regions around the beltway. so i don't think it's just montgomery county. i think it's more common than people might believe. >> the lieutenant will appear next week in court to answer to the charges. right now, he is on paid of my house. >> reporter: there it was on craigslist. a stranger claiming he owned pollard's house and wanted to rent it out. >> this is my house for sure. i mean, when i saw it, i was in shock. what is going on here? i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: pretending to be a potential renter, pollard e- mailed the stranger. he wrote back saying he was from nigeria and wanted $1400 before letting her into the house. >> don't hand out cash. >> reporter: erika hernandez of the police department says anyone interested in renting should never assume the person they are dealing with is the real owner. went up, more than a half dozen extra people drive by the house each and every day. the police department has launched an investigation. tonight, a minneapolis woman is fighting to keep her home. this time, the foreclosure crisis to blame. this is where 26-year-old rosemary williams calls home. friday, she was evicted and the bank changed the locks. hours later, her neighbor showed up to help her get back in the home. >> i was about to run away myself and leave everything behind. thank god a lot of people came around to give me the support i needed. >> after helping her retrieve her belongings, neighbors began to hold a sit-in. they are willing to go to jail in an effort to bring justice to williams and thousands of other homeowners who have become victims of the foreclosure crisis. speaking of foreclosure, some of the homes are literally bugging people in new jersey. tens of thousands of fish have been dumped into pools of foreclosed home. the idea is to use the fish to get rid of mosquitoes in the area. >> this pool is filled with mosquito-eating fish being used to combat a big problem in this county. >> reporter: the mosquitoes were so noorblly bad in this paramus neighborhood a few weeks ago, his grandchildren could hardly play outside at night until he figured out why. >> we thought it was from the house up here which was in foreclosure, but it turned out it was across the street. that pool was completely black. >> reporter: and loaded with mosquito larvae. stagnant swimming pools foreclosed properties carry mosquitoes with the west nile virus. particularly with the rainy weather. now the mosquitoes are sleeping with the fishes. >> we nerve area plied any pesticides, went back a week ago and have not found any breading. they are taken from a pond at the mosquito control office gobbling up the larva. the county still has to spray its trails. less organic than these little suckers which for now are doing the job in john's neighborhood. >> >> know we're eating into weather. >> gary is a big paula fan. >> we need to take this seriously because it could be dangerous. >> it's going to be hot, you know? just prevent against ek sussive time spent out in the heat if you can tomorrow and especially on monday, too. you know, we haven't had heat like this. so we've had one day as it was a couple of days. 96 so far this summer season at national. believe it or not, we've had a can youle of showers out there. maybe you got a sprinkle or so driving out this evening. that's passing to the east now. some of the louds will linger on tonight. mid to upper 90s tomorrow. i think a couple of upper 90s are possible tomorrow away from the water. down towards fredericks, perhaps manassas and toward charlottesville. temperatures will be in the upper 90s and the heat index tomorrow. don't think necessarily we'll surpass 100 but we'll be right there buing up against 100 tomorrow late afternoon. it will be hotter on monday as it looks like on monday temperatures will get a little closer. the actual air temperature will get a little closer to 100 degrees. again, some folks south and southwest of the metro may be touching the triple digits with the actual air temperature. the humidity that we're gonna have, of course, we'll add probably about three to six degrees more in the feels-like category over the next couple of days. the warm front goes through tomorrow morning. we're going to be hazy, hot, humid. this bubble of hot air that has been so long way off to the west of us this summer will finally make a bit of an appearance on the east coast. again, we've been waiting on this for a while and e've been trending fairly comfortable this summer. that all changes now as this mini heat wave runs into us tomorrow, monday, tuesday. it's looking like wednesday we'll get a little bit of a break from the heat, but it wouldn't surprise me if this number for wednesday doesn't creep back up a little bit maybe 92, 93, as we actual i had start to get into the beginning part of next week. by the latter part of next week, temperatures in the 70s this evening. still 80 for raleigh. here's the heat bubble that extends all the way up into illinois and wisconsin this evening. shus is 89 degrees. the heat index out this at this hour is still 94. the high temperature today in st. louis was 97. it felt like it was between 103 and 106 with the heat index. this is a good gauge city. when the heat is on the run to the east coast, always look to st. louis tosee what they were. they were 97 for the high today. i think for tomorrow, we're going to be right in there as we tend to mirror their high temperatures with this type of setup and the hot air coming from the west. showers mainly staying to the north of us. a little bit of it touched us this evening. very, very late activity. the clouds move on off to the north of us tonight. some will linger, though. 73, upper 60s in the suburbs. very hot, very humid tomorrow. 96 for a high, but with the heat of the day and sunshine, it will feel like 100 degrees. if you can stay in tomorrow, stay in, stay cool, stay in he shade. do all those things. this is only a few days that we have to worry about this, and then it's going to get cooler in the middle to latter part of next week. so do all those things you know to do. plenty of knew id. not the booze, though. water is best, lemonade is obably good, too. 98 on monday. i think monday will be the hottest day of this little three to four-day heat wave that we have coming our way. >> okay. thank you, gary. so we have new additions to those popular bumper stickers that abbreviate popular beach destinations. now there is irq and afg, iraq and afghanistan. many americans have loved ones who have served or are serving there. now one local group wants to make it easier for military families to be noticed. >> it's totally irrelevant if you are for us being in afghanistan and iraq. totally irrelevant at all. what this is about is just supporting soldiers and nothing else. >> today, the group mailed out 5,000 stickers. if you'd like to learn more, head to myfoxdc.com and click on web links. we've all been there beforen the drive through lane weighing the best options for your health. >> what sounds good may actually be bad for you. the proof is in the numbers, and we are breaking down the worst offenders in just three minutes. ntth moms know kids need calcium... but they also need vitamin d to help absorb calcium. withoplait kids, trix yogurt and go-gurt, they get both. yoplait, the one for kids. go-gurt is specially made to freeze and thaw by lunch time?
