the hospital, one with serious injuries. you see the video as firefighters carry one of the passengers away. stacey cohan is live at the scene at lay phone plaza. >> reporter: you can imagine what it was like following the rally. hundreds of thousands were in the city and everybody leaving at the same time. there was a crush of people. this escalator is one of those very steep escalators that descend into the underground station. take a look at the video, you can see the people being transported. we are hearing at some point the escalator began to jerk. they don't know what caused that. there are a variety of reasons including safety sensors that actually exist near the floorboards of the escalators that are designed to trigger if there is too much pressure applied. so, was it a safety censor, malfunction? we don't know exactly what went wrong. at the entrance it's steep and long. i'm not sure if it was a malfunction or surge of the crowd or what that circumstance that lead to that was. when we got here, we had several injuries. large crowd. the station was evacuated reasonably quick. >> reporter: now, there were four injuries. one was serious. the four people were taken to local hospitals. the metro station now has reopened but the escalator was shut down for some time as the investigation continued. john henrehan spoke to a metro official who said they don't know what went wrong and they will have a better opportunity to do that when they get inside the escalator. back to you. >> to clarify, the station is open. >> the station is open and has been for quite some time. at last check they were not letting people use the escalator. >> thank you. the other big story we are over tonight, the rally to restore sanity and/or fear. >> here is what we are going to do. we are going to count off. >> a huge crowd of people turned out to see jon stewart and stephen colbert. they had signs but little idea what would happen. turns out it featured john legend, cat stevens and a host of other performers. what exactly was the point? organizers say to polk fun at the nation's diversity and tempered politics. >> there are terrorists and racists and stall inists but those are titles that must be earned. you must have the resume. not being able to distinguish between real racist and tea party or real biggists and juan williams or rick sanchez is an uncult not only to those people but the racists themselves that put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate. >> so, if at the wart and colbert were about ration ality, why were their fans passionate about showing up? john henrehan is on the mall to answer that tough question. john? >> reporter: this was a very odd gathering. organized by a comedy cable network. it was surreal. it was whimsical. and i got to tell you, it was really, really big. they came by the thousands and thousands. to give you an idea how big the crowd was, here is a look from the top of the washington monument. some blocks of the national mall were empty because they were squared off for receding of the grass. >> i'm happy this many people are here. >> reporter: in a city that has seen many antiwar, antiabortion and antibig government rallies, why did people come to a rally to restore sanity. did you really come from alaska for this rally? >> yes, we did. >> reporter: why. >> it's something that i believe is important. the nation needs to get back to the issues and not just arguing with each other. >> reporter: why are you here? >> to join the crowds. people who want sanity. >> reporter: what do you think? >> well, they can't hear anything. we are having a great time. >> my message. i am holding one thing. i want the elite running my country. >> reporter: this muslim family flew from from southern california to agree with jon stewart that most americans are in the middle. >> there are people in the middle that are not extremists to anything. we are not either republicans or democrats or terrorists or whatever we might be labeled in this country. we are people that love this country. >> reporter: one in 20 people about in the crowd was carrying a sign. many of the signs were whimsical to baffling. here is a sample of what we saw. so who says we don't have a sense of humor at fox news. there were plenty of antifox signs. it's a lefty crowd. that is to be expected. how big was? nobody counts in washington but metro normally on a saturday before 3:00 p.m. carries about 180,000 people. today before 3:00 p.m. metro carried 400,000 house trips. so, about half that number perhaps came to this rally. that's the best ballpark figure we can give you, maybe 200,000. john henrehan. >> did you get a sense that this was really about having fun or was there a political slant to this, people wanting to plaque a statement politically. >> more political than fun but both were here. it was a lefty crowd and they were here to have fun both. both. >> sums it up. john henrehan, thanks for that. [singing]. kid rock and cheryl crow with one of the most serious moments in the rally today. most of the performers were either not announced or confirmed as late as thursday. it was an eclectic mix on stage. hard to put kid rock together with tony bennett and sam water son in the same event but the artists had wide appeals to the wide range of ages in the crowd. every age group from children to grandparents were represented. when the party on the mall was over, it kicked back up in northwest. that is where eleanor holmes norton hosted a happy hour with stephen colbert. the message, be sane, let d.c. vote. getting to and from the rally was a test of your ability to be rational and reasonable. big crowds and long lines in d.c. as well as maryland and virginia. cabs were out but not necessarily able to pick up and drop off in the closest locations. a lot of folks and i saw this driving in, just decided to walk it. turning to the developing story. while the rally was going on, the final touches were putting put on for the marine corps marathon. in about 12 hours runners will begin arriving for the race that begins at the pentagon. that is one of the military buildings shot at in the last two weeks. there are security checkpoints for everyone in the race and more security tomorrow. there will be several street closures on the race route. they are listed on their web site and we have a link at myfoxdc.com. security is a major focus for our country with the shootings and now the explosives found on the cargo planes bound for chicago. tonight a woman is under arrest considered a prime suspect. fox's katherine harrage reports on who she is and why investigators are convinced this wasn't a test. >> reporter: the country's president says the suspect is believed to have sent two explosives found on cargo planes in england. >> the information that we have acquired says it is a woman that sent the shipments through the agencies. >> reporter: the two packages handled by ups and fedex never made it to the united states. they contained petn. one had a self phone detonator and the other a timer. sources say the intelligent tip was specific and lead investigators to the tracking numbers for both packages. british officials say one of the devices could have downed a plane if gone undetected. >> it bass viability and -- was viable and could have exploded. the target may have been an aircraft. had it detonated, the aircraft could have been brought down. >> reporter: some experts are highlighting weaknesses in airport security. >> there are a bunch of problems revolving around how we examine the freight pal let's that go on planes. >> reporter: the american cleric al wacky is a leader in yemen and called for attacks against the u.s. the explosive in one of the packages was of a higher quality and more powerful than the underwear bomb that failed christmas day, evident that the packages were not a dry run. d.c.'s police department is mourning the death of one of their own. still ahead tonight on the 6:00, the tragic accident which claimed the life of a police officer. new information about a triple shooting that left a teenager dead in the district. take a closer look at keith fimian and his inspection business. fimian's former business partner said fimian lied, his record "built upon a fraud." his business sued more than 40 times. slapped with thousands in liens. its corporate status revoked. now we learn fimian signed a campaign pledge that protected tax breaks for corporations outsourcing jobs. fraud, failed policies. unfortunately, that's keith fimian. the investigation continues into a crash that killed a d.c. police officer. it happened on mlk avenue in southeast. police say the officer's car hit a pole while he was responding to a call. paul dittamo was behind the wheel and was killed. the other information in -- officer in the car was taken to the hospital and will be okay. dittamo has been a member of the police department since june of 2009. a fire that ripped through an apartment building last month claimed another life. yesterday 21-year-old katherine alvarez passed away. investigators are trying to determine the cause. we know the name of the teenage girl killed in a triple shooting in the district. 13-year-old angel morris died when she and two other people were shot at a home on madison street in the northwest. the suspect is robert carter. first carjacked a vehicle after the shooting, dumped it, then carjacked a metro access vehicle with a driver and two passengers inside. he was arrested a short time later. president obama is trying to rally the troops ahead of the midterm elections. coming up on fox 5 news at 6:00, the message he is sending to voters as he tries to keep his party in the majority. from ambulance fees to slots, voters in maryland have a lot to consider come election day. we are days away from the midterm elections. opponents say it's about what happened in the last two years. david lee miller with why policy may trump. >> this is getting me fired up. >> reporter: the mood turned serious as the president asked voters to carry their excitement into tuesday's election. he said the future hinges on keeping his party in the majority. >> you have the chance to set the direction not just for this state but for this country for years to come. >> reporter: all sets in the house are up for grabs on election day. republicans are 39 sets away from taking -- seats away from taking back majority in the house. in ohio, john boehner said many are angry with the stimulus and health care. >> i'm not nancy pelosi or barack obama. i say what i mean. >> reporter: one said they wove into office on a dream of changes. >> i think the uncertainty that left people uncomfortable and dissatisfied with government leading people to vote for another change and this time republicans stand to benefit. >> reporter: another expert says many like the president personally but plan to show their disapproval with his policies at the polls. >> the big problem is many of the people that supported in obama in 2008 are not going to turn out in 2010. >> reporter: president obama carried the state of connecticut in 2008. recent numbers indicate his job performance rating here is sliding. in bridgeport, connecticut, david lee miller, fox news. this election day voters in montgomery county will decide whether they should pay if they need an ambulance. the county council approved a special fee. volunteer fire services are fighting it. many insurance companies no longer pay the full 400 to $700 ambulance fee. county executive isaiah legit said there will be cutbacks if the fees are voted down. the proposal for a casino would allow 4400 machines in the facility. opponents worry about traffic and crime problems. supporters say the state will gain from revenue that goes to west virginia and pennsylvania. in the district, the question is on the ballot for the first time in eight years. voters will decide whether the city's attorney general will you be appointed or elected. right now it's an appointed position. there is no actual candidate for attorney seasonal. this is where we should be temperature-wise. we will see a change in the five-day forecast. 58 at national airport. 55 gaithersburg. 56 at baltimore. 58 fredricksburg. to the west 55 at martinsburg. up the mid-atlantic, 54 boston. new york 54. to the south, richmond at 55 degrees. we have a 59 at raleigh. satellite and radar composite, not a lot to talk about. we were under a ridge of high pressure in the carolinas. that will move out. clouds to the north of us. but we got to enjoy a pretty dry day. take a look at the tropics. tropical storm shary is losing its tropical characteristics. hurricane tomas is a category one. it's affecting st. vin -- st. vincent moving the north -- to the northwest. expect it to strengthen. let's take a look at where we are heading. we have sunshine in the forecast. a ridge of high pressure then a cold front heading through. it's a dry cold front. behind it cooler air will push in. ahead of the front, tomorrow afternoon, winds will pick up and be a little gusty. a little cool as we head out for the ghosts and goblins for halloween night. we have the marathon tomorrow, the marine corp. marathon. when they head out, it will be a chilly start, 46 to 52. for halloween night, we expect the temperatures to be a little bit into the 50s pretty much. a little on the cool side. let's take a look at the five- day forecast. sunshine across the board until thursday. at that point a chance of a shower. 30% chance. other than that, temperatures are going to be below seasonal. chilly nights, though. be prepared. >> thanks. lots of
