despair over aid pitting brother against brother and turning friends into foes. victims are losing patients over the slow process of getting aid in haiti. fighting is breaking out and spiraling into lawlessness. i'm maureen umeh. >> i will thomas. the problem has been worsened by the destruction of the main ison. 4,000 inmates are roaming the streets. that's just part of the problem. fox's craig boswell is live with new developments. good evening. >> reporter: certainly, that's just one of the mounting problems here in port-au-prince. look, on the streets there is little evidence that the aid that we can see being flown into port-au-prince is making it to those who need it most. even with thousands of troops and aid from countries worldwide, children like toddlers in an orphan age remain thirsty, hungary and without baby formula. the u.s. is attributing supplies as quickly as possible in challenging conditions. >> whether it's food or water, medical supplies, tents and tarps, we need as many of those types of commodities as possible. >> reporter: an aide worker on the ground who was in april u.n. meeting today told us 5,000 tons of food is sitting in a warehouse and no one has a clue how to distribute it. the u.s. embassy desperate families wait for chance to get a u.s. visa and a way out. >> no water, no eat, no life in haiti. >> reporter: eddie's son was born in the u.s. the child's mother was killed in the quake. getting him out is the only option. >> it's the last possibility to save my children so i'm going to take my chance. with my son. >> reporter: for this woman the frustration overflows as she t get to her infant son who was airlifted to miami's children's hospital. >> i'm trying to get to miami. >> reporter: in the shadow of the presidential palace, thousands live in squalor with no relief in sight. >> this is a disaster of epic proportions. we have a lot of work ahead of us. >> reporter: a spokesperson at the u.s. embassy says the haitian government has identified 14 distribution points for the life-saving supplies, food, water, medicine but are still not up and running. so many people have been for the purpose offed from their homes. where are they going? i understand tent cities are popping up. >> reporter: exactly. they've been popping up for days now. we've walked through several of them over the days and they're getting larger and larger. whether or not they have a tent or just something they can cover-up from to escape the heat during the day or have something to sleep under at nighttime. otherwise people are walking around or trying to walk into the outlying areas but there is nowhere to go. >> it's a desperate situation. craig boswell live in port-au-prince. thank you. here in d.c. special prayer services are asking for support and relief for those suffering after that earthquake. fox 5's roby chavez is live at the national cathedral where one of the biggest services is just getting underway. robbie? >> reporter: a special mass has started inside the national cathedral. we're expecting a candlelighting vigil and expect to go hear from the ambassador of haiti. all day long churches opened their doors for prayers of comfort. at the shrine of the sacred heart it was a special creole mass for the victims of the earthquake in haiti. in their native language a preacher tries to offer comfort. for the local haitian community it was an emotional sunday filled with quiet prayers. >> as a haitian-american it's very, very hard. toay for us to come to church is something that can help. because the country now, we need a lot a lot of prayers because that's the only thing we can do right now. >> reporter: music from haiti was comforting too. at a time like this, community matter. especially for those so far away from home. >> by getting together and seeing the smiles or sharing some other similar situations, i believe people will definitely, you know, it will alleviate the pain. >> reporter: for some still waiting for word the church become the only place to turn to in the face of such despair. >> i don't have to tell you my heart is filled because i can't be there and i can see with my own life, just watching on the tv. >> reporter: and for that haitian community church there in northwest they are also giving prayers of thanksgiving. their chaplain, father jasmine has been found in haiti. they expect him home this week. a bit of good news through all the prayers. many of the churches across the area also offering special collections today to collect money for the victims in the earthquake in haiti. we're live in northwest, roby chavez, fox 5 news, maureen. >> thank you, robbie for that. tents like this one outside the haitian embassy in northwest could save lives in haiti. shelter box, the humanitarian aid group sends them to disaster areas. ten people can live in one of the tents for more than six months. the tent comes in a box about the size of a storage van and includes insulated sheets, mosquito nets and cooking stoves. they cost about $1,000 each. >> we have 200 boxes in haiti. i think a shipmt would have arrived yesterday. some have already been put up. i think we have around 2,000 committed to haiti and more on the way. >> people stopped by the embassy of haste i to drop off supplies for -- haiti to drop off supplies for the survival kit drive. go to myfoxdc.com for a link to other charities and organizations. another big story we are following is the weather. what a wet and soggy sunday it's been. a live look outside. believe it or not i think this is part of northwest washington but it is so cloudy out, it looks like it could be the springfield interchange. gwen tolbart is live in the weather center with a first look at weather. >> reporter: you know part of that problem is also fog that has devoped. we're going to continuing to see some of that as well. visibility reduced. the roads a little slick out there so do be careful. let's look at true view. this wide swath of precipitation has moved throughout the course of the day. we're not out of the clear yet. some of you getting a little bit of a break but as you see to the south we still have a lot more rain to move its way through. to the west a different story. let's look at our maps. we have a winter weather advisory in effect. that from midnight tonight until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. as those temperatures drop after midnight into the 20s. we're going to see snow or freezing drizzle through here. it includes allegheny, highland, pendleton and grant. a look at the holiday forecast coming up later. i'll have l the details. a water main break shut down two streets in old town alexandria. washington is closed between king and duke while crews are making repairs. part of prince street is also closed. some businesses and homes may notice low water pressure. some of the survival stories from haiti are amazing. we have one coming up for you. rescue crews found a woman in the rubble and salved two lives in the process. it's a serious traffic jam on nbc row. we'll tell you why so many got in line to help. andhis went the nation celebrates the man behind the civil rights movement, martin luther king, jr. where do things stand for the memorial on the national mall?
