trick or treat? tonight's the night of mischief and sweets for all ages. >> mother nature is in a bit of a wicked mood tonight. hello. happy halloween. >> let's look at what might be a scary night indeed for trick- or-treaters and other kind of halloween revelers. celebrations all over the region for kids and adults alike. rain may make your halloween makeup run just a bit. let'go down to glenn in the weather center. a lot of folks hoping for clear skies tonight. gwenn? >> we don't have clear skies, but we have wet weather we will have to deal it and hopefully it won't do anything to dampen the costumes however. let's look at radar. some of the areas are seeing light sprinkles so we do have a passing shower that we're going to have to deal with. it will be light and nothing that will be really very heavy and we expect consistent rainfall in the later hours of tonight. and as far as the temperatures are concerned right now, in the 70s, and pretty mild out there and 67 in annapolis, however, and 74 to the south at fredericksburg, and other than that, it is pretty mild outside. the clouds are sticking around. but here is a look at that scary halloween forecast for everybody, the ghosts and goblins, we are talking some spooky clouds, definitely, and yes, a sneaky shower, mid and then dropping to the low 60s, as we get to the later night hours, for all of those adult tri-or-treaters out there partying of course, in their costumes, temperatures will actually be into the 50s. we will have more details and a look at the full -- at the five- day forecast later. back to you. >> thanks, gwenn. as you know, one of the best haunts in town every year is the nightmare on m street in georgetown and this year promises to be no different. and matt ackland is there and what is going on? is it going to live up to its name as it does every year? >> it is lard to say really how -- it is hard to say really how busy it will be this year. the good news is this halloween falls on a weekend. that means many more people might come here to georgetown to celebrate. the bad news, what gwenn was talking about, if we have some bad weather, if it gets -- it has been raining a little bit, there has been a couple of showers, and if the rain continues, well then, maybe the crowds might stay away. let's go to the video. the district is planning to handle crowds and in fact they're planning on thousands of people heading to m street tonight. in the past couple of hour, the department of transportation crews have been placing barricades along m street and 200 officers will be assignedge don't expect any problems at all and they say past halloween celebrations here have been relatively crime free. we spoke to an a & c commissioner not long ago and he spoke to usabout all of the fun tonight. >> we're preparing for bigger crowds than the past years. it is a saturday night. and the weather is warm. >> are you concerned about issues having to do with safety, vandalism? has that happened in the past? >> vandalism and crime has not been a problem in the past and we are more concerned with keeping the crowds safe and keeping people flowing and the traffic lanes open and we have a lot of police to help do that. >> reporter: back out live, here in georgetown, a live look at m street, you can see that the traffic is picking up and not a whole lot of people in costumes but we are at the 3100 block of m street, and further down near wisconsin avenue, that's where everyone begins to gather but we're told within a couple of hours, the whole place will be packed with people wearing their costumes, and one biof advice for you tonight, if you plan to drive, you're really going to have a difficult time parking. in fact, we've seen dozens of tow trucks in the area, and they say that there is no tolerance here, they will tell you, if you're illegally parked. so best thing, get in a bus or in a cab, walk here if you can, but whatever you do, don't drive here and then park illegally. we will have the latest wrap-up for you later. back to you. >> matt, you talked a little bit about driving and heeding caution to that. a lot of streets will be closed so the nightmare on m street can go on and there are a lot of street closures and parking is restricted overnight until 6:00 tomorrow morning. if you're in the area, be sure to look for the parking signs. if you don't want to drive as matt mentioned, you can take a circulator bus from union station into georgetown. >> parking never easy in georgetown. take a cab. and to make sure kids stay safe tonight, law enforcement in dc and all over the region will be going door to door to check on child sex offenders, and they're all required to put a sign on the door saying no candy so kids won't knock and they have been notified by mail and in person so if someone does knock on the door they are told not to open it. you don't have to go far to scare up whatever information you need on halloween. for more on the georgetown road closures or what spots to find so that you may want to haunt lar on tonight, we have tips how to avoid the swine flu scare, all right there on our web site, myfoxdc.com. and speaking of swine flu, fears are still strong in the area, and that sent people to local clinics today to make sure they're protected. in alexandria, 1,000 doses of the vaccine ready to be given out and ficials still thought they would run t. they gave tickets to people in line to make sure everyone who waited could get a shot and when the tickets ran out, people were sent home so they wouldn't waste any time in line. the clinic at cardoza high school ran from 8:00 this morning to 4:00 this afternoon. there will be another clinic there next saturday at the very same time. when it comes to the people who are supposed to protect us from danger, firefighters are some of the most important in any community. but in montgomery county, there is growing concern. volunteers have had to step up to fill the gapscreated by cuts to professional firefighters hours. fox 5 john henrehan explains tonight. >> reporter: the fire rcue service in montgomery county, maryland, is a blended department. there are 1300 career firefighters and staffers, and about the same number of volunteers. although there have not been layoffs on the career side, during this recession, overtime has been cut. but the volunteers at the kensington fire station who we found training on new foam equipment had been asked by theichief james stanton to increase their time on duty, and they have. volunteer ronnie dowdy lives rent-free at the kensington station in exchange for committing to 48 hours a week of duty time. often however, he commits to 60 hours a week. to the annoyance of his girlfriend. >> beyond annoyed. it is something that she has learned to live with, i think. she kind of knows that this is something that i love to do. so she will support me hopefully in every way. >> reporter: kristen bird is a senior at johns hopkins university who is also increasing her volunteer hours. she is expanding from emergency medical tech to full firefighter certification. >> i'm hoping to be something in medicine, whether or not it is a doctor dr or nurse, i'm not sure right yet but pretty much this gives us the hands-on experience that you don't get from sitting in a classroom and talking to professors. for now at the kensington department, the volunteers are filling in the holes in the schedule. chief stanton hopes county officials will leave next year's fire department budget intact. >>at some point, if you keep cutting, it will effect response, yes. -- affect response, yes. it is one of those things that has to happen. i don't want to see that. >> reporter: chief stanton adds, he is always looking for more recruits to come in as volunteer firefighters. in montgomery county, john henrehan, fox 5 news. a developing story in prince george's county, we're following, a body found inside a car in laurel. ples say it was found in the area of -- police say it was found at 430 this afternoon at lanchdale roads and investigators are not saying how the man died and they may not know themselves yet. and we will he the latest on the news after the game tonight. a virginia mother has not given up hope that her son survived a military aircraft collision off the coast of san diego. 28-year-old adam bryant from crew, virginia is, one of seven missing coast guard members. they were involved in the crash between a coast guard plane and a marine corps helicopter. it happened two days ago and even though the hope for survivors is fading, the rescue efforts continue. for humans, the biggest concern right now seems to be swine flu. then there is the seasonal flu, too. >> but for dogs, there is a different concern. and it is serious. a growing flu problem every dog owner needs to know about. >> plus, who has been hanging out at the white house? the instead of assuming he will get the nod based on polling. meanwhile, crisscrossing the street campaigning in alexandria and christianburg and now in leesburg. later tonight, he will head to richmond, and president obama, you might recall campaigned for him in norfolk and he insists the only poll that counts is the one on tuesday but nce the start of the campaign, he has trailed in the polls. the men don't want to get to the white house, at least not just yet, but plenty of people want an audience with the president. but who is getting in the doors? people like oprah winfrey, denzell washington, george clooney, bill gate, they're all showing up on the visitor logs. fox's care line shively now with who has the president's ear. >> reporter: the white house visitor's log is a partial one of names requested through the freedom of information act through the end of july. it shows industry leader, lobbyists, big campaign donors, activists and a healthy dose of celebrities. just because someone's name is on there doesn't mean they made it to an oval office meeting with the president and some people went to events like the congressional luau or saint patrick's day staffers and there are ceo's, the heads of exxon and citigroup and others and alan greenspan made six different visits. lobbyists and labor unions are also well represented. andy stern is the top one on the list, with the international union with 22 visits and tim ghandi, the president of now had 15 and activists got invites, jesse jackson had six and steve ellendorf had five and controversial democratic donor george zoros has four and oprah opened went twice and so did brad pitt. and george clooney met with the president to talk about the crisis in darfur. and serena williams came three times, including for a poetry slam where she would have gone in to jay-z. and the white house unit cautions just because a name is on the list doesn't mean it is the guy. michael moore, michael jordan, bill ayres, r. kelly and jeremiah wright are on there but the white house is quick to say it is not the famous ones. caryn shively, fox news. >> i think a lot of the celebrities were at the white house inauguration night. the obamas had a priority party. >> how come we weren't on the list? >> i was going to ask you. a lot of us are trying to stay healthy but what about your pets? there is a virus around. they could get very sick. we will show you how to stop that and gwenn is back with the full halloween forecast. we are coming right back. the kids are lined up at the white house with more than 2,000 trick-or-treaters expected to get goodies from president and plz obama in 20 minutes. -- and mrs. obama in 20 minutes. and they will host a reception for military families and the children of white house staffers. before the trick or treating in dc though today, a chance to make a difference. >> we're talking about a making strides against breast cancer walk. and sue palka was out there taking a couple of laps and then heading inside for a lap around the concourse and fox 5 a proud sponsor of today's event. and it looked like for the most part the rain held out and for tonight, trick-or-treater, another story. >> light rain is starting to edge in now that people will have to deal with and for the late night partier, it will get a little more heavier. so i think you will still be out there tonight, in cos tumes, just partying away, so i'm making sure they're aware of what to expect, there are the cloudy skies outside. a little bit of light rain, drizzle, just edging its way in and a little bit of a light shower, so i know the young ones that are heading out this time of the night so make sure mom and dad, you have a little bit of an umbrella or at least a clear plastic rain jacket and we don't want to hide the cautions any more than we have to. and a little bit more precipitation in the forecast for tonight. even talking into the morning hours. but some sun by sunday afternoon and that means sunday is not a washout. some good news. and temperatures are starting to drop at night, getting downright chilly, and be prepared for that and the week ahead is looking very much on the pleasant side. and here is a look at current temperature, pretty mild outside, wi the younger trick- or-treaters, as they get out. and 70 degrees at dc and 70 at manassas, and 70 at gaithersburg. 62 in martinsburg. 70 degrees at baltimore. 70 at annapolis as well. in the mid atlantic, a little cooler, 67 in new york, and 69 in boston, and look at pittsburgh. 49 degrees. hopefully those trick-or- treaters are dressed fairly warm. the winds have been a little brisk into the course of today. they're still up there a little bit. we will see them start to diminish slowly and 9 mile-an- hour winds right now sustained at national and 12 at dulles and here is a look at the wind gusts, 20 mile-an-hour wind gusts at dulles. actually for halloween, that is probably kind of neat and you will see the leaves blowing around as everybody is out in their costumes. let's take a look at radar then. here is a look at some of that light rainfall that is starting to push its way through and you can see from gaithersburg through to reston and you have a little bit more here towards areas of the east of us, and this is the fox 5 live doppler radar, and as we go to true view, we will show you the bigger picture of what we're expecting to push through into the course of this evening and we have some here, more to the west of us than to the south and that also was going to make its way through. we're dealing with a frontal system that is going to head across into the course of tonight and that is going to set us up in the overnight hours for some continued rain showers, and cloudy skies, as well. so be prepared. but in the meantime, we are hoping that this is not coming down too heavily for trick-or- treaters out there. let's go back to the weather maps then. with the frontal system, what we're talking about is mainly once again a chance of some showers into tonight and into tomorrow, and ta a look at the rest of the country. not a whole lot happening. a little bit of rain to the far northwest and other than that, mostly everything is based around the frontal system along the carolinas into tomorrow, they will continue to see the rain showers. here is a pool of cooler air over the great lakes. that's going to slide in over us as we head into the course of the week. and you will see a drop in the temperature, especially at night. and so be prepared. and this frontal system crossing into the course of this evening anbehind it, not only is the cooler air, but a nice ridge of high pressure that is going to build in. and that is going to set us up to clear the skies out. pretty slowly into tomorrow, though. and we could see a lingering shower into your sunday morning, and then by afternoon, things will clear up, and they will be dry and we will have the sunshine. so for the spookiness of tonight, we have the cloudy skies out there for the early part of the evening as well as a sneaky shower, and mid and low 60s, and then later tonight, we will see the tempatures drop a little bit more, overnight lows into the low 50s, and overnight showers in my forecast, an then for tomorrow, we're going to see things improve by the afternoon. we will have plenty of sunshine. not bad at all. maybe a few clouds out there. but not all bad. here is a look at the five-day forecast. a ridge of high pressure will hold us good until tuesday. that's the next cold front that comes through. it looks like it will be dry though. the rest of the week, we're talking a mix of sun and clouds. >> but tonight, the clouds are spooky clouds. >> and spooky showers. >> i love that voice all day today. way to get in the mood. >> it is from the coffee i'm sure. if your treat does not include a few cocktails here is another reason not to drink and drive. you can get houston checks out one local animal hospital flu clinic for dogs. >> there was a steady parade of dogs at the rocky gorge animal hospital, resort and spa. that's really the name of it. in laurel. the cdc says the canine flu virus first seen about five years ago in florida has spread to over 30 states. >> it is moving closer to our area. in ad some positive cases, and each some mortality from the canine flu. maryland has had some positive cases. >> reporter: the chief of operations re at rocky gorge. >> i will cover this so he doesn't realize what i'm doing. all done. >> you didn't even notice, did you? >> reporter: he already had one flu shot. this time, he had a booster. for which he got a well- deserved treat. >> you do think your dog needs a flu shot. >> because he is around a lot of other dogs. he works at a barn. he is a barn dog. he sees dogs constantly. i think it is still good for him. >> dogs are a lot like people. some can handle the flu shots. no problem. >> all done. >> and others really don't like the needle. listen closely, you can hear cj whimpering. >> good boy, cj. good boy. >> it may seem a trifle like flu hysteria but vets say pet owners should be on the safe side. >> we've done over 300 pets here. and we've had no reactions whatsoever. >> there are no cages. only rooms here. so it is no surprise that an animal hospital and boarding facility like this one would have a flu clinic. >> dogs come to rocky george to get their hair shampooed and blow-dried and fashionably cut and styled but every saturday in october, it was also the place for trick-or- treating of course, the wizards getting set to tip off against the nets. tons of costumes. tons of excitement. we will talk about that and breaking news from redskins park coming up after this break. happy halloween from the verizon center. the wizards are getting set to tip off in a half hour against the new jersey nets in the home opener. last season it wasn't particularly friendly to the wizards, they won over 19 games but 13 of the games were won here at the verizon center. the wizards have already played two game, both on the road and they're finally back home with an interestinlooking lineup. >> it is a little bit different for me. it is like i told somebody, when i went in to dallas, you kind of are waiting to see how they react, the first road game, and now we're in a different situation, without karon and now all of a sudden we're changing on the fly. so i think it is very unique. maybe one of the few times in history that if you look at the starting five we have tonight, none of those guys are on opening day rosters last year at this time, on this team. gilbert and brenden were basically both hurt. and randy and ke were in minnesota. and also san antonio. it will be a little different. but an exciting situation for those guys too. you already know the wizards will be without antoine jamison for a couple more weeks as he nurses the injured shoulder. karon butler had to leave the game early last night. he only played 17 minutes. a bruised knee. flip saunders said he will not play today. they do expect him to play on the next game on tuesday. looking back to last night's game, the wizards jumped out to a hot start led by gilbert arenas and haywood. and the hawks caught fire at the end of the first quarter, going on a 24-9 run. they took the lead for good from there. and the wizards plagued by 15 turnovers, fell last night, 100- 89. evening their record at 1-1. >> we came out and played aggressive, the way we wanted to, jumped off to an early lead but got into foul trouble and that put us in the hole early in the first half and then it went downhill in the second half and made it difficult but we have to figure out ways to stay in the game. >> breaking news from redskins park. not very good news. chris samuel has been placed on injured reserve meaning his season over. a six time pro bowler. a huge loss for the offensive line. we don't know if he will try to come back after the season. all we know, he is done for the year. the world series is on air tonight. game three, philadelphia, the phillies hosting the yankees. coverage begins tonight at 7:30. to college football. navy hosting temple. this is wild. jeff punching from his own end zone but he can't handle the low snap and picks it up and then tries to kick it and that doesn't go well either. the ball is rolling around, it is picked up by navy's david wright, and he scores a touchdown. it is 10-7 navy. later, on the ensuing kickoff, temple's james nixon takes it at the goal line. as he heads upfield he makes a great cut at the 20. we go 100 yards in all. his game has been great. it is a back and forth affair. and right now navy leads 24-17. and one other local score, duke leads virginia, late in the fourth quarter, 18-17. and so in about a half hour, the wizards and the nets tip off from here at the verizon center. we will have highlights
