children at every step of the way. he said it only takes 30 seconds for your child to disappear. shawn, back to you. >> very sad. >> and that is. thank goodness she's okay. thank you, karen. arlington county police investigating the suspicious deaths of two men at an apartment complex. unfolding in the 1900 block of north culpeper street. matt ackland has the story,. >> reporter: the gruesome discovery was made by a building maintenance worker along this apartment complex. >> two bodies were discovered in the front living room area of the residence. there was blood discovered and we're continuing an investigation at this time. >> reporter: the 31-year-old carl molten and 59-year-old spriggs were identified as those found dead by police. what happened to them inside the apartment is still not known. >> we believe it's an isolated incident. we're not saying there is an actual killer out there. we don't know how they, you know, came to be and they were found. >> reporter: a large crowd of people gathered outside of the home, and we're told by police that that can take days for officials to find out more. >> reporter: back out live in arlington, can you see a number of police officers, investigators still on the scene and it's been this way since 10:00. we're told by arlington county police that no weapon was found in the apartment, but there was blood that was discovered and, brian at this point, authorities say there is no cause for concern for the folks living around here, but there are a lot of questions needing to be answered and authorities need to be here until they can figure out what went wrong. back to you. >> and in leesburg, police have arrested a maryland man in connection with a murder-for- hire case. wendell mansel travelled between annapolis and leesburg to meet with an undercover officer posing as a hitman. investigators from leesberg and ann arundel county worked together to arrest him. a pedestrian was seriously hurt after being hit by a car on i-66 this morning. that car hit the pedestrian about 7:00 a.m. near the fairfax county parkway. the accident, as you can see, turned rush hour into more of a headache than usual. the highway reopened by 10:00 a.m. and tonight, everything is fine. a new report shows more than half of the people killed in recontribute traffic accidents in the district were pedestrians. according to the national highway safety traffic administration, of the 2400 fatalities in d.c. in 2010, 54%s were pedestrians and that is more than four times the national average of grain%. the report said three quarters of pedestrian fatalities happen in urban areas. monetary measures, the transit agency is investigating another escalator accident and that happened this morning. a briefcase got caught in an escalator and caused people to fall. five were hurt. three of the victims taken to the area hospitals with minor injuries. and this is a question for you. would you pay 5, 10, how about $20 for a hassle-free commute? [ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. . a murder mystery in maryland left two little girls without a mother. she was last seen alive leaving her daughter's a dare -- day care. her body was found in a prince georges creek two days later. >> reporter: and there are clues investigators are working with and there is notice word of a possible suspect in the gruesome murder of philips. her friends are numb with grief and hope that police are on the killer's trail. she was last seen a week ago monday in that dark-colored winnie -- minivan with an unknown driver of 21st street northeast. she was taking her two-year-old daughter to day care. sources say she had $5,000 in cash on her and was supposed to go to philadelphia. >> she was on the way to purr case a char -- purchase a car and never made it, obviously this is sad because there is no way it could be her, it could be me, it could be anybody. >> reporter: shavon phillips was 22 years old and had finished nursing school, was about to start a job as a hotel housekeeper. her body was found floating in this creek in fort washington last wednesday night two days after she disappeared. sources say the remains were stuffed in a bag. >> and somebody just do it, like leave her like she was trash. >> reporter: they were two of her closest friends. >> she has kids and people that love her. why did they do that to her in. >> the day care center's owner said phillips was last seen in this van, which pulled up the street before she walked out of the building. a copy of the surveillance video has been given to prince georges county police investigators and they not speaking publicly about the case. phillips lived in this apartment building on sixth street southeast. after disappearing, her apartment was broken into and ransacked. >> she was like a consider is to me and i could have talked to her about anything. >> did she express concern any about anyone or anything? >> she didn't. she didn't. >> reporter: in that surveillance video, can you see phillips' daughter tugging at her. that was unusual behavior for the little girl. she wonders why she sensed something was wrong and that would be the last time she would see her mother phillips had a five-year-old daughter living with the father in virginia and there is no indication from police that they're close to naming or arresting a suspect, shawn. >> and sad story. bob, thank you. a gruesome discovery. they found human remains behind a shopping center in pasadena. the man spotted a skull yesterday afternoon in the woods. they are determining the cause of death. a d.c. man who posed as a maintenance man began entry into apartments has pleaded guilty and the 48-year-old is facing two counts of burglary n. june, he attacked two victims in their 90s before stealing their cash. surveillance video from the incidents helped lead police to him. the utility company pepco announced it wants another rate hike and last month, they rejected the request for a large -- and during a conference call, pepco said that it will request another hike in the fourth quarter and that comes the same day as they are holding a hearing on pepco's response to the derecchio storm. >> and i think we keep pounding the case drama. >> and they estimate it costs 70 to $80 million to restore power after the massive storm. and there is that bit a break. >> it's nice today. >> gary mcgrady, what is the deal? >> reporter: shawn, good evening to you. the sikh temple remains closed. they continue their search for clues as to why this was the site of senseless violence. >> and this is going to be hurtful for a long time. >> reporter: outside of the temple, there is a small and moving memorial to the victims. six posts indescribed with the names of those killed. members of the temple and most in the small community are struggling to find something. anything encouraging and positive. >> what i have observed is the focus is on educating the public on who we are. the idea that that happens, they won't occur. >> reporter: the numerous reports of the shooters' ties to white supremacists and hate groups has many believing the temple was targeted because of the appearance of the members. since 9/11, they have been the target of prejudice because they wear tush owns -- tush signs and long boards but say that is a gail -- daily reminder of the values they uphold. >> when i wear my turbine, i'm reminded i'm supposed to be loving, compassionate, generous, patient and my interactions with the world. >> reporter: the flags remain at half-staff and president obama has ordered embassies government offices, and military posts to do the same. >> it's a tremendous show of solidarity, and that is an affirmation of our values as a country, this hurts. it also helps that our whole community and country's behind us. >> reporter: federal investigators hope to have the temple reopened around thursday. funeral services are scheduled for friday. shawn? back to you. >> craig, at some point, police were looking for a person of interest who showed up there at the scene of the shooting after the shooting what is the latest on that? >> reporter: they did locate that person, interviewed the person and dismissed the person having any involvement in this whatsoever. the police are adamant and they are adamant this is a lone gunman. >> a lot of people are asking the question, everyone believes this was a hate crime v. police come up with a motive yet? >> reporter: they're playing this close to the chest and not coming out with a motive. when you look at the evidence, the pieces of the puzzle are put together and they lead to a hate cry. anyone in the community will tell you this is a hate crime. >> thank you for the update. >> okay. the baltimore record label that distributed the gunman's musk said it took all of the music off of the website. label 56 issued a statement saying it doesn't seek attention through shock value and have can ask that people don't take what the gunman did as honorable and respectable nor think that everyone involved in the label agrees with the gunman. page played in a white suprematist heavy metal band. new details about the colorado movie massacre. a denver colorado station reports the psychiatrist who was treating the suspected shooter asked the colorado police to run a background on him. the request made in june, six weeks before the shooting. the psychiatrist expressed her concerns about holmes through a campus police officer. no word if any actions that officer may have taken. and may have been a copy cat crime an ohio man brought knives and guns into a movie theater. an alert offduty and the theatre manager noticed -- became suspicious when they saw him carrying a big bag. they confiscated a pistol, ammunition and several knives. the man accused of shooting gabby giffords and killing six others plead guilty today. after more than a year after psychiatric treatment, he was found competent to allow the tree and allows him to avoid the death penalty. in addition to giffords, he wounded 11 others. he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and faces life without parole. giffords and her husband mark kelly released a statement saying they're satisfied with today's plea. the former university of maryland student charged of posting online he would go on a campus ramp age pleaded guilty. he admitted to disturbing the peace and misuse of telephone facilities. he wrote in march he would kill enough people to make national news. he's undergoing mental health treatment and must do 200 hours of community service. coming up, a woman posing as a nurse trying to steal a newborn as a -- from a hospital. how this ended. >> and getting on school grounds, appears a sugary alternative is prevalent than ever. back in a moment.
