started getting sick late yesterday overnight and this morning they were vomiting, diarrhea, they just generally felt miserable, 15 were so ill they had to be taken to hospital. turns out it is probably viral gastroenteritis. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a fun summer camp with an outing to a baseball game, everything was fine until late yesterday, when they were about to take a bus ride back from nationals park. >> when we were leaving someone just fainted it came on quick from the people just started puking from there on. >> we thought it was something we ate but then it was so -- like everyone was feeling ill so we thought it was dehydration. >> fairfax county health department was called in to help get to the bottom of the mysterious outbreak. food bourn illness may have contributed but probable diagnosis, viral gastroenteritis. >> it is fairly contagious, although, it is a fairly mild self-limited illness, most people do quite well with it, it can live on surfaces so there is a cleaning component to this. >> the day was the last day of the camp students left for home with instructions to avoid contract with others to prevent the spread of the illness. meanwhile health officials here are trying to rule out whether they are suffering from noro virus. >> it is a type of gastroenteritis, the most common type, we use the term viral gastroenteritis until we are able to determine definitively it is noro virus. >> the university is being proactive. >> dealing with linen, scrub down of roomfacilitytrying to make it as clean as possible. >> they are cleaning up it will take less time to process the dna. they now have a new dna center in the past dna samples had to be sent to a lab in texas. >> fate of jerry sandusky is now in the hands of the jury, both sides wrapping up their closing arguments today but not before the judge throughout three of the 51 child sex abuse charges the former penn state assistant football coach is accused of molestic 10 boys, bruce gordon has the latest. >> reporter: as a legendary football coach, jerry sandusky diagrammed the plays and pulled the strings but as a criminal defendant and accused child molester he waits powerless to learn his fate from a jury of his peers. >> this is the fight of jerry sandusky's life goes beyond the penn state miami game in 86, this is the game of his life. >> reporter: he has remained silent through it all he waived a preliminary hearing and chose not to testify through trial his only public comments, bemoaning the friends whom he claims desserted him. >> now all of a sunday these people turn on me when they've been in my home, with their kids,. >> reporter: during 6 days of testimony crowds packed the center county courthouse only a few close friends spoke out on sandusky's behalf. >> think of the thousands of boys that have gone through his camps either at penn state or sandusky football camp think of all the thousands of kids that have gone through second mile it is thousands to eight. >> reporter: prosecutors made clear, sandusky's university was not on trial here but the child sex scandal brought about criminal charges to two top school officials and led to firing of head football coach joe paterno and the school's president and trial testimony from former graduate assistant who claimed to witness sandusky rape a young boy in a school shower but did not stop it outraged many. >> in my opinion penn state is an enabler and they are responsible along with the perpetrators. >> for more legal insight we want to bring in bernie graham. thanks so much for being with us. curious about your impressions of the prosecutions case here eight witnesses very graphic testimony, you have mike mcqueary who said he saw one of the attacks is this a strong case for them? >> what defense lawyers talk about in child sex cases you actually have to get beyond opening statements because the fact, circumstances are so graphic, that immediately the jury starts to presume you are guilty instead of innocent not the mention these are being done, these acts are being done and committed to children. what it really all comes down to is what was sandusky's intent. if it was his intent to sexually arouse himself he is guilty if it was inapropriety contact with -- inappropriate contact with children it is not against the law that is what the jury is wrestling with. >> was it a good move for defense not to put sandusky on the stand. >> no, i saw what happened to bob costas i thought that was a huger or by his legal team right there, and he got on the stand, i think things could have just gotten really worse for him. >> in what regard? >> yeah, i guess generally speaking, you never want to put your client on the stand, and my motto is when your client testifies a thousand things have to go right only one thing has to go wrong your client has to carry the day in some cases your client has to testify, this isn't a case where sandusky needed to get up there. >> you are calling about his call to bob costas when he said somethings that made him sound not so good in the eyes of people judging him. >> yeah, some people were wondering the he would deny it at all and he got on bob costas and said yeah, he was in showers with children there is no scenario unless it is your own child where you are in the shower with some other person's child. >> the judge throughout three child sex abuse charges with sandusky, two that the judge said were not supported by the evidence they still have 48 counts, mountain of charges, friday is traditionally verdict day given your experience do you thing they can return back quickly. >> no, your experience is very good, despite how young you are. jurors want friday, they seek closure it is too much evidence to go through. if you add up all the counts he is facing 500 years and i know the jurors will give due course to what happened, read the judges instructions over and think about it roll it over in their heads over the weekend and maybe come back next week. >> so you thing it will take some time for them to get through this one. >> if you are sandusky's lawyer you are hoping it takes time. >> bernie graham thanks for being with us tonight. appreciate your insight. coming up next on fox 5 news at 5, a dc man shot in the where it happened and what the city is doing to crackdown on these types of even hard tore do in the district. experts say getting through a break up can be difficult and one of the most common reasons people seek therapy. but what makes it so tough, to make a clean break-in the district. joining us now for a little more perspective is clinical social work therapist, elizabeth joy lamont. thanks for being with us. >> thanks for having me laura. hi. >> my first guess it is hard to break up in dc because it is such a small city. >> a small city and a very professional city, where a lot of people work very hard, and they therefore tend to end updating people, with whom they have professional overlaps. that is one of the biggest reasons that i hear people talk about breaking up being so hard to do. >> what if you are one of those four people, i have been there myself, struckling through a break up, male or female what is your advice to get yourself on the right track make it easier on yourself. >> well, that is a great question, and i would want to first focus on technology, because that is another big stumbling block that is making break ups more difficult in general, everywhere today. >> facebook. >> yes. facebook. so, in our weak moments it is so tempting to start looking at photographs of what your ex is doing and completely not productive and total waste of emotional energy. please unfriend your ex on facebook. >> are we of female gender more guilty of that? >> i don't think so. that goes both ways i think what the female jennifer dc is a little -- gender in dc is a little guilty of is buying into this idea dc has more eligible women than men. >> mm that is not true. >> well, whether it is true or not i don't thing it is a good idea, to believe the hype and get too focused on that, because then, it can become an excuse to tolerate substandard behaviour. >> to settle. >> yes. >> and dc is full of so many wonderful, smart, motivated, professional, engaging people don't believe the hype about statistics that would be my advice. >> one of those things don't put it out there in the universe or it is a self- fulfilling prophesy. >> it is. >> and unhealthy to do the back and forth, the break up get back together type of thing. >> very unhealthy and that is where technology, impulses are a big problem. get your ex out of your phone. no texting. >> very good. very important advice thanks very much. >> thank you. >> all right to see professional displays. >> although fireworks are pretty, and we all grew up with fireworks, we want to see fireworks, kids want to see fireworks, are dangerous. >> just a reminder fireworks are prohibited in montgomery and prince georges county as well as alexandria virginia people are urging people in other areas to check with their local fire department before using fireworks. >> if you had to be outside hopely you found a way to be cool. sarah similar monotucker barnes found simmons and tucker barnes, found a way to keep cool, they turned it into a war on will thomas and tony allowed the water fight? looks like they had fun what a great way to cool off >> exactly that was in the early morning hours >> it was hot early this morning. >> yeah. >> that was a $400 silk shirt will thomas was wearing too. that is ruined. >> oh, there is more where that came from. >> that is true he has a closet full i am told. >> still hot outside but not as hot, the heat advisory has been cancelled. >> i think the weather service -- of course they issue these things they probably just feel there won't be enough widespread heat index values, it will be you know approaching 100 to 105 until 10:00 p.m. everybody knows it has been hot today, it will be hot on through the evening hours probably been in some cases, some places, a little bit cooler, feeling, today than it was yesterday, but then again, just adds many places, it has been a little bit more miserable out there, than what it was yesterday. just kind of an evil situation depends where you are. i want to show you a couple thunderstorms these are way out west, there is i-81, right there, winchester, front royal, this was a lot more impressive about 30 minutes ago, it is all moving trying to move to the east, just a little bit winchester, i think you will stay dry here something could pop up here or there just not a whole heck of a lot going on. right now temperature here in town sitting at 95 degrees, 93 for gaithersburg, quantico, 96 degrees manassas, 95, where it has really been hot today, hotter than just about anybody, frederick, 99 and dew point is way up there in the lower 70s. we talked about this last night if the dew point is 70 degrees or higher it is oppressively humid out there, and so look at their heat index, 107 degrees, fredericksburg, 101 and quantico, 108, isolated thunderstorms, certainly possible, but not probable at 7:00 p.m. i think most of that should be way out west along i-81, muggy at 9:00 p.m., 91 the heat index probably still up close to 95, for most of us, a little cooler at 11:00 p.m., 86 degrees muggy and head index up around 90 even at 11. showers and thunderstorms back out to the west, having a hard time trying to cross over 81, i doubt any of them, will be successful a little bit of a pop up shower and thunderstorm situation virginia, down to north carolina but what i want to show you back outcoming through michigan, up into northwest ohio and indiana, this is the front, that is going the come through, here tomorrow and tomorrow night, now, the good news is this is the front that is going to wipe away a lot of the humidity take away some of the heat, but in advance, we are going to have showers and thunderstorms building through the day and afternoon tomorrow and looks like there is the possibility, those will be widespread and strong, maybe even severe tonight warm and muggy again a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm overnight tonight, temperature here in town, very warm again, 80 -- 78 for a low, 83 tomorrow morning, 8:00 a.m., again, shower or storm possible, there won't be too many of them though. after lunchtime, right around lunchtime after lunchtime i think that is when the storms will start to build, we will be in the lower 90s, strong thunderstorms around here, 4, 5, 6, 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night and again some of them could be severe let me show you this on future cast 5:00 p.m. tomorrow strong storms, lining up again in advance, of that frontal system which will help things out for the weekend, no changes here but i want you to see this, tuesday, if it is in view, look at tuesday. >> beautiful. >> 80, sunny, low humidity looks like wednesday, thursday, probably just as nice. >> fabulous. >> okay. >> and the weekend is not too bad either hot but not nearly as humid. >> thanks. archaeologists in maryland
