closer to 11:00. we're still stuck with big winds later tonight. as we go through the day tomorrow, pausing this at 9:00 in the morning, you can see between 20 and 30 and in some spots still 40-mile-an-hour winds. but it does look like it gets much better tomorrow evening. prepare for another windy day. of course what we have to talk about next is, we missed out on the blizzard. we came this close to it. but why was it such hard forecast to get nailed down? we're going to talk a little bit about that and show you some staggering snow totals coming up in just a few minutes. brian and laura? >> we were both says, sue, we're really glad we missed it. >> all day and night we have heard howling winds from the storm. >> better than inches of snow to dig out of the driveway but the wind does bring is own problems. -- beth parker has a look at some of that trouble. >> the trees and flags still whipping around. as you heard sue say in the district and surrounding areas, some of those wind gusts today, 40, 50, she said even up at 60 miles an hour. it is funny because, you know, it was sunny day. in a way, a lovely day but much better enjoyed if you were inside looking out at it. the sky was bright blue but the wind was unrelenting. >> windy. stuff flying in our face. >> reporter: street signs like this one rattled around but stayed put. out of, a giant banner on the side of national public radio tore away from the building. >> sounded like a bass drum was crashing, rocks flying out of the side. >> it smashed windows. en. >> ripped out of the wall and started banging against glass. >> a maintenance crew cleaned it all up. not too much later, just a few miles away a huge tree on the edge of rock creek park crashed down and closed 16th street. a national park service crew quickly ground down the tree. now you might expect the wind to be knocking down old trees that are already rotting and dying. not so though. take a look at this. even for healthy trees like this one, the wind was just too much. it wasn't long before 16th street reopened. seems like this are a nuisance. >> cold and windy but it is all right. it is winter time. >> and the wintry wind was the news of the day. >> reporter: that's right it is winter time. some of this is to be expected. as you heard sue point out there, some of these big huge gusts will continue. the strong winds late into the evening. so it is not over yet. back to you, brian. all right, beth. we dodged the worst of the storm as you have heard by now, but not new york city. nearly 2 feet of snow paralyzed the city today. passengers on two subway cars spent all night and the morning on board without heat after the trains broke down in -- trains broke down in queens. all three airports closed with more than a thousand flights canceled. a long uncomfortable wait at logan airport in boston. the airport reopened this afternoon, only a handful of flights are getting in or out. an airport spokesman warns that rebooking could drag into friday. the busy holiday season means there are fewer available seats. the governor declared a state of emergency. tens of thousands of customers are without power. an inch of snow in atlanta doesn't sound like a lot but it is the most for that city on christmas day since the 1880s. the hartsfield jackson airport is open after hundreds of flights were canceled. passengers wait understanding long lines to rebook and find the next available flight. >> the snow is having a major impact on air travel up and down the east coast, messing up the plans of many travelersing trying to get home after the holidays. matt aclan has more. >> reporter: still not looking too good inside if you're going to fly to new york or boston, as brian was saying there are a couple of flights that were able to leave those airports and are accepting some flights as well. but not many at all. you have really got to feel bad for the folks who had to sleep here overnight or spend a bundle at a local hotel. we did notice a lot of passengers upset. it even looked like airline employees were frazzled today. the worst part about all of this is, it's not over yet. clear skies overing reagan national today. hard to believe things are so stressful inside. nasty weather in other parts of the country left some people stranded here overnight. >> oh, it is horrible. it is really bad. so don't want to do it again. >> reporter: paul demarc you was headed to charlotte but all his flights were canceled last night, so he made his bed in an airport seat. >> cold and drafty. luckily i had a blanket which is better than most people. >> reporter: nick and clark fountain began their journey to maine yesterday, in denver. they landed at dulles where they discovered their connection was canceled. but airline officials told them they were rebooked on a flight out of reagan. well, an 80-dollar cab ride and 200-dollar hotel room later, they are still stuck. >> the travel expense has well exceeded the ticket already. >> reporter: a sweet surprise for charleston herowicz who lives in chicago. she says winter travel into chicago is always trouble. but not this time. >> things look good. we're here early and the flight is on time and we're good. we're going to chicago. o'hare is typically delayed and there is always a fear of snow and we're getting where we want to go. >> reporter: if you wonder why there have been so many delayed and canceled flights, all you need to do is talk to pilot sean douglas. he landed a jet at jfk airport last night just as the storm was hitting new york hard. >> the visibility was to the point where it was almost below what was required. certainly the winds were almost to the point where it was in excess of what is required, and the third thing is, jfk couldn't -- almost couldn't keep up with the runway plowing. the runways kept getting covered in snow, and in no time at all. >> reporter: that pilot we just talked to jumped be a train last night, laura, and came down here to washington d.c. because he was going to meet his son here today. it is so windy out here, it is even making me start to tear up. but the good news is, laura, that a lot of planes are taking off and landing. those that have been cleared at other airports. once again, logan, the newark airports, laguardia, jfk, showing a lot of delays and cancelations. >> so hectic to travel anyway this time of year. throw this in and it is what mess. matt thank you for update the from reagan national. snowy weather from the northeast is also impacting amtrak. many passengers boarding trains from washington to new york are experiencing delays and cancelations, and since the new york airports are closed amtrak says its trains are very crowded. train service has resumed between new york and boston, but again, passengers are running into some delays. amtrak says i it is trying to restore full service as soon as possible. passengers should call haven't been able to talk about in a month. a win, finally. >> everyone gets to feel good. no open locker room this morning. we just hear from shanahan this afternoon. but here is the deal. they haven't won since november 21. they have lost four straight weeks. think about that. and as you know, jacksonville was playing for something. they are trying to win the afc south. the redskins were just playing for pride. here's happened in a very cold, cold jacksonville florida, where rex grossman was a perfect 4-0 as a starter. 3-0 as a gator, 1-0 as a 'skin. redskins pick update a 20-17 overtime win. a franchise record fourth ot game for the 'skins who improved to 3-1 in those contests. rex grossman had his ups and downs. they blew late lead but stepped up when they needed to. with the team banged up, it was the back-ups like a former terp, kevin barnes, a key interception, making key plays and impressing the coach in the process. >> we had a number of defensive players step up and a couple of offensive players get their opportunity. you evaluate them and you like what you see, definitely helps your chances for next year. starters that are playing got to play at a higher level than they played at before. they have to play their best game as well. i was pleased. i was pleased with the effort. wasn't perfect by any means on either side of the ball but we got the effort you needed to nine a way to win. >> and the redskins get a chance, brian, to play spoiler one more time. the giants come here. the giants still have a chance to win. they have ely. the giants need to beat the redskins and they need help to make the playoffs. programming note, too, that game they flexed it. 4:15game. they want a bigger audience because the giantness are playing for something. 4:15on fox at fedex field. >> giants look vulnerable so perhaps an opening here. >> maybe the redskins will finish with seven wins. >> somebody excited to see be the redskins win, rex ryan because the jets get into the playoffs because of the win. how about donovan mcnabb? i'm sure seeing rex grossman has mixed emotions doing well. >> all week, brian, remember it was back and forth with the agent fletcher smith. and the latest one came yesterday, where there was a report and it hasn't been substantiated, that donovan mcnabb said i want out at the end of the season. i want to be released. well, read all about that in duh magazine. why would he want to stay? i don't think he will have to ask twice. i think they will get rid of him. they will try to trade him, getting something for him but i don't think he's going to come back. shanahan asked today if he had talked to fletcher smith, the agent who is flying all these sal videos out. he said no, i -- salvos out. he said no, i have reached out to him but i haven't talked to him yet. lots of folks digging out from snow tonight. maryland's eastern shore is no exception. >> welcome to ocean city maryland. the sun and fun capital of the mid atlantic. not. we will have a report on this storm here coming up on fox news. how do you save millions of dollars when it is threatens to snow on a christmas holiday? the secret is in this stuff. check out ocean city, maryland. all the snow we didn't get, they did. and today, the shovels and the plows are out. part of the reason that ocean city got so much snow was the storm spiraled out over the atlantic, picking up moisture and then dumping it there as it moved north. but the deep snow not the only problem there. beach erosion is also major concern. fox's doug mcalway is on the board walk to see how the community is dealing with the storm. >> reporter: welcome to ocean city maryland. the board walk here. the sun and fun capital of the mid atlantic. we have had a foot of snow in ocean city. westerly winds howling 15 to 25, gusting to about 40, and a windchill of about 12 degrees. this is very uncharacteristic what you see here because in this part of the country, entire snowfall totals almost always fall to the west. to the blue ridge mountains and the shenandoah valley. this storm has been precisely the opposite, as you move east from washington d.c. to the coast line, to the normally moderating effect of the atlantic ocean we're getting higher snowfall totals. the big concern here has been beach erosion. luckily we dodged a bullet on that. last november they had a terrible storm here, a nor'easter that did away with a lot of the beach. they embarked on a major replenishment project here that cost $9 million, to try to keep the beach in tact. it seems we dodged a bullet on that one. reporting from ocean city, maryland doug mcalway, fox news. ocean city may have been walled by the snow. a few miles west, nothing. making it difficult. potentially expensive. the plan how many plow trucks need to be on the roads. tisha thompson shows you the different strategies local leaders used to prepare for a lot or a little bit of snow. >> reporter: the threat of a weekend christmas snowstorm can be an expensive proposition. because not only are you worrying about overtime. you also worry about holiday pay. so to try to save money, all of the jurisdictions in our area relied on this stuff. pretreating michael highways and over-- major highwaysen and overpasses was the secret to saving money. the maryland state highway administration says brine treatments last three to five days. so maryland, d.c., and virginia, started spreading the stuff thursday so avoid bringing in crews on christmas day. >> this one was a tricky storm because the forecast was kind of -- you could get a blizzard or could you get a dusting and it kind of went back and forth like that. we planned for the worst and hoped for the best. >> maryland and many of its counties avoided paying a premium by waiting to mobilize plow trucks until early sunday morning. but in northern virginia, holiday pay went into effect because it sent out about 65% of its trucks late christmas day. >> we always err on the side of caution. we will always make sure the roads are treated. ddot's karen leblanc said d.c. was prepared to pay time-and-a- half so it could send out its entire crew christmas night. >> we were ready. we were really ready. when the show didn't come and the snow didn't come, those crews were saying what are we going to do? we had constant accordance calls throughout the day. we did reassess. we did end up standing downing the operations earlier than anticipated. >> pretreated in advance, planned ahead. had everything ready to roll. >> reporter: in spite of all the pretreating everyone was able to do, it is still going to be an expensive weekend. but every jurisdiction we talked to said they won't know the final numbers for a new days. in northwest, tisha thompson, fox 5 news. >> sue was saying this was a tricky one to forecast. >> i looked sue at a weather forecast. it almost had d.c. in a snow hole. snow was all around us and up the east coast and we missed almost all of it. >> good place to be. >> i would say so. i think it was our lucky day. that's for sure. i was off most of last week but i was watching closely, too. what made this forecast so challenging, brian and laura, that is the model guidance we use to forecast these things, which is essentially a mathematical equation, were really kind of struggling to place the center of what we knew would be a very intense storm, and, you know, what 50- mile swing in the track made a huge difference in the snow totals and kept wobbling. and it was very -- all could you do was go for the worst case scenario. we were very fortunate that the storm eventually did track a little farther out to sea. but it has been the monster that we knew it could be, and we were just very lucky this time that at this time jogged a little farther east. but several models that are quite reliable did not do what they did for our bug three storms last year. there was no consensus. so because the track was so very tight, the forecast right to the last 12 hours or so was still flipping and flopping, unfortunately. very, very difficult storm. a real challenge. one that i think will be the subject of many post motorems. -- mortems. let's look where the storm is now. it is moving away. it is responsible for our big winds off the coast of maine where theydon to -- continue to get blizzard conditions. i saw winds as high as 80 miles an hour in wellsley, massachusetts. the blowing and drifting and cold not to be believed. and in maryland, 13.5 inches. salisbury, maryland 11 inches and leonardtown, maryland got 4 inches. diehl maryland had an inch-and- a-half. only an inch-and-a-half at reagan. check out elizabeth, new jersey. 32inches, national, 13, and philadelphia -- central park 13. and philadelphia, 12.4. philly has been hit hard as has new jersey. we want to go live to karen hepp from our sister station in philadelphia. i understand you respect in hattenfield new jersey just east of philadelphia. set the scene for us. how are you doing up there? >> reporter: we got walloped. i am so jealous to hear you talk about a half inch of snow. we have anywhere from a couple inches out in the w estern 'bushes. down this end -- western 'burbs. they did a good job here in bucolic, hattenfield . really cute town. they got a lot of stores open but you can see there is almost nobody out. it is stew brutally bitter cold. people with this holiday week decided to snuggle in and not brave the elements if they didn't have to unless they were going to go sledding with the kids and have hot chocolate. city of philadelphia had a lot of snow. more than a foot on the ground in most places. new rules they had to clear a lot of sidewalks, they have got real tight little streets so it is real tough to get in there and get everybody out of the way. but, you know, the kids are off from school. it is a great week to have a snowstorm like this. it really couldn't be better timing. so, you know, in philadelphia, it's "the big dig" out. they are happy but they canceled the eagles game but it will be tomorrow night. it is, you know, not your problem but people here were disappointed by that one. >> we were watching that closely, too. we're out of time but i want to say do you think they made the right call for the nfl canceling that game and moving it to tomorrow night? >> reporter: absolutely. so many people would have driven home. they would have had a few too many cocktails and we probably would have had fatalities. but the people here wanted their football. >> we will be watching tomorrow night. karen thank you for joining us. come down to d.c. where it is balmy and we have a warm-up in the cards. we will welcome you to the city of sisterly love. back to you, brian and laura. all right, thank you, sue. a special dedication for a fairfax county teen found dead. find out how friends and family of vanessa phom are keeping her memory alive. that had a really strong showing was apparel sales. that is something really if you think you're going to need that -- if you didn't get enough clothes for the holiday season and you have extra money to spend, that's an area where you may want to go out and hit post holiday sales because cotton prices actually are really spiking. they have doubled over the last few months, and that means that some of clothing manufacturers have said they are going to have to raise their prices in 2011. so now, brian, is the time to buy, if you can. >> or i can just go back and get all that polyes ter out of the
