confrontation. no very verbal exchange no, road rage. just victims going about their business and were picked at random. >> reporter: the drive from flint, michigan here to leesburg, we're told is 9.5 hours. there was plenty of time between those two attacks to get here. we are also learning that police in toledo, ohio now believe a stabbing there on saturday may also be connected to this killer wanted in flint, and also for stabbings here in leesburg, virginia. we will have more coming up tonight at 6:00. live in leesburg, sherri ly, fox 5 news. >> at the same time the leesburg police were briefing the media today, myth police in michigan were holding a briefing. county prosecutor david layton talked about investigators in leaseburg and flint linked the cases. >> based upon the victims statement as to how the incident occurred and the description of the vehicle, leesburg and the county task force led by the michigan state police got together and communicated about this because it seemed there were similarities between the incidents at leesburg and the incident -- incidents here. it is the victim's description of the asill atlanta and the victim's description of the vehicle that causes us to believe there are some similarities. >> reporter: now just to recap now there have been 13 attacks in michigan since may. five were fatal. and tonight we are learning that police in toledo, ohio, have linked an attack over the weekend to the same suspect. in that case the victim was take on the the hospital and we are told is now recovering. in prince georges county, police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a female who police say is a minor. it happened on bright seat road in handover. police are searching by air and on the ground with dogs for the shooter. we will stay on the story and bring you the latest when we get it. new information in the execution style murders of two women and children found in an apartment. two children show the pair accused in the brutal killings already confessed to the crime. they will stay in jail. a judge ordered them held without bond today. paul wagner is live with the story. >> this is the case of someone sending a message, pay your debts or else. they came here looking for money owed on a large amount of marijuana. when they said they didn't have the cash they were killed along with a 4-year-old boy and 3- year-old girl. law enforcement sources say darryl and lakisha are drug couriers from texas. they dropped off 17-pounds of marijuana to the women live living in this detached garage in lanham. the deal went bad and the children and women were killed one victim was shot multiple times lying on a floor at the entrance though the bedroom. other three were on a bed shot multiple times. >> certainly another case that really rocks the community. it is actually something i drove by taking one of my kids to practice and drove by the scene. i was pretty astonished myself. >> reporter: at the afternoon hearing the judge in the case never asked the prosecutor for the evidence against the pair. instead informing them they would be held without bond. state's attorney glenn ivey declined to discuss the specifics in the case. >> i can't do it outside of court but i will say i think the prince georges county police did a great job of butting this case together in an extremely quick five-day forecast. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say no drugs were found in the apartment. bellard was captured within hours of the crime. police identified the dead as dawn brooks, 41-year-old -- police say the dilapidated apartment had no toilet, running water or air conditioning. neither of the suspects made any comments during the hearing today. they both have criminal records in texas. a preliminary hearing is set for early september. >> i know in earlier reports we said there were people who lived in the home on that property. have you been able to talk to them? did police talk to them? do they have any connection to this? >> we know that a witness went in to the house sometime in the early-morning hours and found the first victim. it's unclear that that person may have lived in the house and went over thinking there may have been trouble but it is unclear who lives in the house and what connection they may have had this at this point. trouble in the economy. even hurting the pentagon's bottom line. defense secretary robert gates announce she closing the joint forces command in norfolk, virginia. it has 5,000 workers. they are cutting use of outside contractors next people broke out on friday night. four were hurt, three arrested. it happened on the platform at the gallery place metro station. maureen has the story tonight. >> reporter: metro officials say there were patrols at the gallery place metro station on friday night. they say the officers were monitoring the group but the question is why they failed to stop the fight? metro officials had no clear answer for that. four people were hurt after 70 people started to fight at the gallery place metro station on friday night. it isn't clear what sparked the brawl but it is the latest of a string of fights involving young people. it is a long-standing problem that seems to get worse in the summer months. now some district officials are calling for better security and new ways of dealing with the problem. metro is responding. >> we also are working on some different strategies that i won't reveal now for how we are going to handle this weekend and the coming weekend to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: will that include more officers. >> its will possibly include more officer and possibly plain clothes, maybe some of our special operations unions will be called in as well. >> three teens were arrest in the the brawl. two 16 and the other 18. >> we have heard complaints from some rider they had no help from metro officers during the fight. was that addressed today? >> they say because of the side of the brawl and the chaos that ensued officers couldn't get to everyone who needed help right away. they say that they assisted but the riders say much more needs to be done to keep them safe. federal agents captured an escaped prison inmate and a massive search for two other fugitives. tracey was recognized from a tv report. when cops arrested him head a handgun and hitchhiking sign. they are still looking for two others. awe three are linked to the murder of a husband and wife on a camping trip. >> we are going to be on mccluskey like a cheap suit. we are not going to pull this thing down. we will have all the resources u.s. marshals service nationally on these individuals until we bring them to justice. >> reporter: the manhunt was originally focused on yellowstone national park but they no longer believe they are there. they believe well. helped with the prison escape by tossing wire cutters over the perimeter of the fence. a catastrophe is unfolding right now in china. landslides have killed 337 people in a remote town, while more than 1,000 people are missing. look at this flooding here. heavy rain led to the land flood. this is one of the rainiest years in a decade. it swamped entire mountain villages. rescue workers are helping people. a health emergency has been declared in russia in the wake of the worst heat wave there in 130 years. temperatures are in the triple- digits across moscow and the heat is compound by toxic smog from nearby a wildfires pushing pollutants to six times the normal level. a top official says the up being the hottest summer ever in russia, around moss cow coe there and that will go back 1,000 years or so of basically being able to keep some sense of record there. it is preliminary but gives you an idea of the scope of the heat out there t. listen, i want to take you to the gulf of mexico here. basically southern sections of florida off the keys. right now it does not look organized or impressive but there is an area down there that is keeping a close eye on this at the hurricane center and they think as early as tomorrow we could have a depression that could be tropical storm earlier than any other country. we are breaking down what some people say might be to blame. we'll be right back.  there's oil out there we've got to capture. my job is to hunt it down. i'm fred lemond, and i'm in charge of bp's efforts to remove oil from these waters. bp has taken full responsibility for the cleanup and that includes keeping you informed. you may have heard that oil is no longer flowing into the gulf, but our spotter planes and helicopters will keep searching for any oil. we use satellite images, infrared and thermal photography to map and target the oil. we're finding less oil every day, but we've still got thousands of vessels ready to clean it up. local shrimp and fishing boats, organized into task forces and strike teams. plus, specialized skimmers from around the world. we've skimmed over 35 million gallons of oil/water mixture and removed millions more with other methods. i grew up on the gulf coast and i love these waters. as long as there's oil out there that could make it ashore, i'm gonna do everything i can to stop it. bp's commitment is that we will see this through. and we'll be here as long as it takes to clean up the gulf. an historic meeting between the ntsb and the metro board of directors following the release of ntsb's findings and safety recommendations related to last summer's deadly crash on the red line. never before has the ntsb sent of a local transit agency. stacey is in northwest with the details. >> reporter: i can tell you this was a grueling year as we all know for metro. they have had not only the fatal crash to deal with, but now last week, this scathing report really from the ntsb criticizing metro's attention to safety. in fact, the director of the ntsb called metro tone deaf with regard to safety issues. well, after this meeting today, it appears that the metro board is hearing them clearly. there's a great deal covered in the hour and a half long session between these five ntsb members and the full metro board. among the issues covered were chronic track circuit failure and a negative attitude or perception of aing in attitude toward safety. those things are, in part, what the in the said led to the catastrophic accident. the seasons exist still today but metro is working toward solutions. rail cars are outdated and the ntsb say they do not provide adequate safety in the event of the crash. that is one recommendation metro is moving forward on, the place of older cars. at the end of the day both sides said in the future they are hoping for a greater level of cooperation between these two agencies. >> i think what everybody agreed on today is that we don't want to look back, but we want to look forward. we want to look at what needs to be done and what can be done and it's not the question of what could we have done differently that the metro board is asking but i heard very clearly today that they are asking the question, what can we do? >> this was an unprecedented meeting. it was extremely valuable. an opportunity for us on the metro board to talk to people who made the recommendations relative to the accident and find out how we can do our job better. >> reporter: now obviously it doesn't end here. metro has to catch up with this report on all of the outlined recommendations that would lead this agency in a direction in which the ntsb will feel good putting their stamp stamp of approval on the safety recommendations implemented by metro. the ntsb is pushing on captiol hill for federal guidelines for safety our metro agency in the city is one of many across the country that are getting a failing grade from the ntsb and a listening list of recommendations. when i asked the chair of the metro board what the thought about the safety of met he said, he rides metro. his grandchildren rides metro and he wouldn't do that if he didn't consider it a safe way for all of us to get around town. back to you. >> thank you. a consumer alert for the carfaxed. now a health alert on a disturbing trend. young girls are hitting puberty earlier than ever. 15% of more than 100 girls surveyed were beginning to develop breasts at the age of 7. that could spell problems for them later in life. karen gray houston is here with a closer look. >> it is called precocious puberty. doctors don't now why it is happening as recently as 1991 the median age for breast development in girls was 10.9 years. it is a sensitive topic but we found some willing to speak out about it. parents of young girls are not expecting it and when they see early onset of puberty they are shocked. >> it was alarming for me to see my 6-year-old developing breast buds was alarming. >> reporter: she is visiting from minneapolis. her daughter's brand mother was also concerned so they took the 6-year-old to see an endocrinologist who took a bone scan and is refer the girl to the mayo clippic. >> they checked the glands, the pituitary gland that was okay. >> reporter: the study was published in the journal of pediatrics found breast development at the age of 7 -- one doctor says it could mean trouble for girls down the line. >> early case of breast cancer, uterine cancer. these are things that people think this maybe a problem later on in life. >> why girls are developing early is a mystery to the experts but there are a lot of theories. >> one being the girls are heavier now. maybe the environment we are living in. >> reporter: in addition to concerns of girls are more overweight, some speculating that chemicals on lawns and farms could be to blame and estrogen like ingredients found in plastic bottles. >> definitely processed foods, milk products now with all the hormones pumped in to this them. >> this mother says her 7-year- old doesn't show signs of puberty but she says she has noticed that girls are definitely more developed. the study's authors say the population in their survey was diverse and doesn't necessarily represent what is happening to all young girls in the united states but it seems to be a trend. >> it is alarming. as a parent, i don't have girls but to even think about it. certainly the cancers are something to be concerned about later in life with the early onset of puberty. any other concernsous there. >> these are kids that are barely out of kindergarten and first grade. there have been some studies that show there can be a risk of depression. they are probably going to start to have sex a little earlier which could be problematic. those are things people are thinking about. what do you do. >> what about early menopause? >> no one mentioned poe menopause. but there were 400 girls in the survey and they will continue to follow them. there was a study out of great britain that showed another link between the correlation of the weight issue but it was kids who gained weight rapidly. >> thank you very much. your pet food may be making your kids sick according to a government report.
