after trick or treating in a residential neighborhood in dale city, virginia, on halloween, three teenaged girls were hanging out in the parking lot of a shopping center on dale boulevard. a man with a gun approached them, ordered them to a wooded area behind the stores, told them to lay on the ground and then he raped two of the three girls. dna evident gathered from the victims has linked that assailant to 13 separate crimes, almost all of them sexual assaults. the crime spree began 12 years ago in prince georges county, maryland. >> this suspect has been violent since 1997, period. he used to hang out in 19 everyone in in prince georges county and used a knife on two occasions and used physical force on another. >> reporter: after a spate of sexual attacks, the same man, according to dna evidence, then attacked a series of female victims in the telegran road and route 1 area. there was attacks in leesburg, virginia, in 2001, a peeping tom incident in cranston, rhode island n 2006. dna evident points to 9 same suspect and dna links him to a rape in new haven, connecticut n 2007. the suspect description is rather vague. male, black, medium built, age 30 east to 40s. the police brass hope the timeloan of the crimes will crack the case. >> the attacks have been going on for 12 years with two gaps. no known assaults from 2002- 2006, and no-known assault in 2008. >> any number of reasons. the person could have been out of the country, incarcerated some place. we know lots of theories and i don't want to lock on any one of those. the keep point, this person was out of the contact and region, or whatever, for a five-year period. >> reporter: and detectives suggested to us that maybe he was away at college, maybe in the military and perhaps he has family or job connects in rhode island or connecticut. they are hoping that once this case gets pubs is lit -- publicity from all the media, that someone will say hey, wait a minute. i know somebody who fit that vague description and was away for that long period of time. coming up, we have specific information about the attacks in prince georges county that might trigger someone's memory. >> hey, john, as this investigation continues,&we look back, was it the dna that linked all the cases together? >> yeah, actually, detectives told us they were aware of the dna connection for years and have not beaten the drum. and in the peeping tom case, no one was attached. >> hefully they catch him soon. thank you. -- hopefully they catch him soon. investigators are asking people to funnel the tips to one location. the local crime solvers tipline at 1-866-411-tips. a fiery crash on the beltway, a woman trapped in her car and she survived. the story has a happy ending. thanks to a crew of construction workers who rushed to the rescue. karen gray houston talked with the heros and joins us with their story. karen? >> reporter: some people run away from danger, our heros rushed towards it today to the scene of the burni car and because of that, 27-year-old vanessa of college park, has survived a terrifying ordeal. she ialive tonight and recuperating from her injuries. to look at this sky fox video, you can see it was amazing that vanessa survived. this is what her jeep wrangler looked like after being smacked from behind by an 18-wheeler on i-95, 495 and college park. the jeep, which had a canvass top was hit and kept moving for 75 yards from the point of impact and firefighters and paramedics arrived to help her. not before several construction workers, who happened to be driving by. the jeep doors could not be opened, one of the men jumped on top of the car to get her out. >> i jumped out with the fire extension winner, tried to put out the fire and which was not going out. >> i ripped it own and jumped in. >> all of this time, the woman in the car, isshe saying anything? >> she was screaming. get me out of here. >> she was scared and crying, completely hysterical. >> reporter: they both modest and mild-marched, don't like the idea of being called heros. they said they did what anyone would do for them if they needed help, they work for the tesla structure company in upper marlboro that might be proud of them tonight, i guess. >> i would say. did they say anything about whether she had her seatbelt on, can did they have trouble getting her out? >> reporter: the state police are investigating what happened. when i talked to one of the men, he said by the time he jumped into the car, the woman was not in the driver seat, so, i don't know if that means she had the seen the on or was able to get out of it. >> either way, she was very, very lucky. >> thank you very much, karen. valessa -- navessa is in stable condition tonight. we're told her injuries are not life-threatening. in prince georges county, a crash involving a car and a tractor-trailer. this happened around 6:00 this morning on 410 at route 50 in landover. so far, no word on what happened here. we do have a tractor-trailer that spilled fuel on the road and the crews were able to get it cleaned up in an hour. a much more serious accident in fairfax county. this is after 7:00 this morning. sky fox high over the scene here at route 7 and colvin run road. six cars were involved in a wreck on the eastbound lanes. two of them flipped. three people were hurt but we're not sure how badly. this was a mess, though. eastbound leesburg pike was closed for more than an hour this morning. we can tell you, though, all lanes are back open tonight. a d.c. police officer charged with murder is facing a judge today. investigators do not believe officer reggie jones was the shooter. they say he was involved in a robbery that ended in murder. stacey cohan is live with the details. stacey? >> reporter: it appears that this officer was very involved, at least accordingto the court documents, i can tell you a few moments ago, the arraignment for the police officer reginald jones who was 40 years old and another accomplice in this case, an rville crawford, were both held without bond. a judge ruled today and they will remain in holding until their trial. now, this is what we know so far. it's quite a tanginged web of individuals that were involved in this robbery. according to court documents, both the murder victim in this case, r.vel and his son planned the robbery attempt along with the police officer reginald jon. according to court documents, they went to a location in prince georges county to target an individual, to plan how the robbery would take and then the court records say the police officer drove with the suspects to an area in southeast washington in his patrol car and used that patrol car as a vantage point from which to serve as a lookout while this robbery took place. things apparently eventually went wrong and police say it ended up with crawford shooting and killing his father, alston. we spoke with the sister of mr. alston who believed her brother had turned his life around after being released from jail two years ago, and she and the rest of the family say they're just stunned by his murder. >> my brother was murdered and left there to die. in cold blood. >> repter: in the shadow of the d.c. courthouse, tracy jackson waits for justice. her brother was shot and killed during a robbery attempt earlier this month. she now knows a d.c. police officer is charged in the case. >> i am just worried, devastated. i am very hurt. i just -- words i can't describe the way that i feel d even my family. it's pitiful. >> it's an embarrassment to mpd. >> reporter: the sister and niece swear the convicted drug dealer had turned his life around after getting out of prison two years ago and they believe that he was only in southeast because of his son and only chil r. val crawford who was charged with shooting and lling his father during a robbery. >> i can't imagine what son would font kill his father. >> reporter: -- would want to kill his father. >> reporter: police chief cathy lanier described reginald jones as a disgrace to the department. again, jones and the other accomplice in this case are being held without bond. live in d.c., i'm stacey cohan, back to you. >> all right, thank you. donald gates, the man set free 28 years after convicted for killing a georgetown student is almost home tonight. he left a federal prison in arizona last night on the greyhound bus and should arrive at his sister's home in akron, ohio n less than two hours. the judge set him free yesterday after two dna tests revealed he's not the man who raped and killed catherine shilling in 1981. gates is due back in court next week where he's expected to be fully exxon rated. trouble for the -- exonerated. trouble for the tsa tonight after the security procedures were unveil on the internet. the house homeland security committee tried to figure out how it was posted on line. the tsa told the committee extra security has been put in place in the aftermath of the posting, especially while so many people are traveling this time of the year and the acting tsa director offered a bit of perspective on what was posted. >> this was a management standard operating procedure. in other words, it had a lot of checklists of what to do to start the day at the checkpoint. it did not have a lot of sensitive security information ohow to actually do certain procedures at the checkpoints. >> the tsa said 12 other documents that detail that kind of information are secure. the agencies put five employees on administrative leave while an independent the lawyer for the husband of a missing utah woman is going on the offensive. joshua powell's lawyer said his client is not hindering the investigation as police claim. his wife susan was reported missing december 7th. pal claims he was on a camping trip and freezing conditions with miss 2- and 4-year-old sons at the time. the police have dna samples from joshua powell yesterday. confusion in the sky. the national transportation safetyoard released a report on northwest flight 188. that is the plane that overshot its destination by more than 100 miles. the report is revealing details on what was happening during the 77 minutes the plane was out of contact with the world. brian wilson has the story tonight. >> reporter: chaos on the cockpit and on the ground, the pages of document released by the nat . it started after a -- the ntsb. it started after the attendants called the pilots to find out when they were landing. interviews were that they were unaware that they missed minneapolis until they got the call. for more than an hour, northwest flight 198 was unreachable by air traffic controllers. the plane was supposed to land in minneapolis and was way off court. >> minneapolis northwest 188. [ indiscernible ] when i got to the crest of the hill, she was gone. >> reporter: julia got going fast and smacked into a pine tree. >> what really scared me was when she was at the ski patrol. she was in her brace and i was able to talk to her and the face was swollen and -- everything was going to be fine and i saw blood in her ear. that really freaked me out. >> she was rushed to regent's hospital and broke both bones in her leg. broke her nose and some bones in her face. the doctors say that the helmet she was wearing did its job and protected her brain. >> it's probably the thing that saved her from truly serious injury. >> i can't go there. i am glad she's okay. it's just -- i think wild be dealing with a bad scenario without that. >> doctors at regents say helmets save lives. each year, they see about 20 skiing and snow boarding injuries. they had five this year. a good rule of thumb, if you're doing an activity and moving faster than you would walk or run, put on a helmet. after looking at that, she agrees. >> you want to go again, julia? [ laughter ] weather-wise? helping out around the holidays radio,it? >> you need to impress the elf with weather, mister. >> what is good weather? >> 70s and sunny. >> you need to go to the southwest airlines flight and take me away somewhere. looks like we're in for a weekend storm and we'll address that in a few minutes. it's beautiful this evening and cold, too. the temperature right now, 38 degrees. the real cold stuff is to the north and the northwest of us and staying there. the cold air to the north of us is going to be a player as we get into the weekend, right? what do we do? we look to the north and see if there is cold enough air to supply the snow and that looks like it might be coming together. i am not going to say anymore. >> in the 20s to around 30 and 20, clear skies and at 11:00 and colder in the suburbs and we're going to have a windchill factor tonight. sunny and cold tomorrow morning, the temperatures bottoming out in the middle 20s, the tones to the west and to the south, too, overnight and looks like a few clouds start to creep into the picture by noon tomorrow and most going be completely sunny and nice. albeit on the cold side. about 3838 degrees. we don't have to worry about -- the snow flying here and calling again this evening. that is good news. it's accumulating and the high pressure and that has been keeping us very, very sunny. all across the mid-atlantic. flying to texas, no snow and this is the beginnings of what looks like is going to be an east coast storm of some type coming up for saturday and sunday, okay. we're going start really, really looking at this quite closely. this is your max hd future cast. this is tomorrow at 5:00 and all we're seeing here is a couple of high, thin whispy clouds coming from the northwest. it's going to be mostly sunny as we take you into friday and notice by friday morning, an increase in clouds and it looks like friday afternoon, we're going to be completely cloudy and stay in the upper 30s for highs and there is a lot of moisture to the south and this represents friday at 6:00. we see some of this last night and we continue to see the trend where the cold air is on friday night at 6:00. the snow is good, too, into spray virginia and extreme northwestern alabama and the higher elevation, the blue ridge. as far out as we're going take it and it's still suspect as to what is going to happen late friday night into saturday and we're not confident enough to begin to narrow that down and tell what you is going to happen. that looks like on saturday, we're going to get snow. cold with clear skies and temperatures in the city, 26 and in the suburbs, easily the lower 20s and teens tonight and very childy. we stay cold again tomorrow and not so windy. it's not going to be uncomfortable as it was the first half of the day today. increasing clouds on friday. temperature there with the clouds only 39 for a high. and then on saturday, high temperature of only 35 if we're lucky. and we think that what we get fouling from the sky on saturday is going to be all snow. a quick-moving storm system and into sunshine and staying cold on sunday and monday. all i can tell you is you have plans for the weekend, stay tuned. this is going to be up and down for the next few days. >> i guess youdon't have timing on that either. >> it looks like a saturday storm. >> i get that. >> saturday into saturday night. >> okay. >> we'll talkoff camera. how's that? sounds good. thank you, gary. >> okay. we have a little good news for tiger woods, despite the ongoing sex scandal. the associated press named him best athlete of the decade. woods0056 pga tour victories, including 12 majors during an unprecedented 10-year run. lance armstrong second; roger federer, michael phelps and tom brady. tiger is also the talk of the town on tmz.
