11:00. the crisis in afghanistan is taking its toll and we're following breaking news right now. reports of gunfire at a large plume of smoke over the skies in kabul just some of the signs of violence. it is the deadliest month in afghanistan. three dea agents were killed yesterday in action and the death toll now stands at 55 for the month. bob sellers is live in the news room with more on a country in crisis. >> reporter: afghanistan is still in the process of electing a neweade insurgents are raging and the big question for the obama administration remains what to do next. this deadliest month for the u.s. military in afghanistan started with the ambush killings of eight soldiers october 3rd. their remains returned to dover air force base. army specialist stefan mace of virginia among the dead. monday morning these three washington based agents of the drug enforce administration were killed in a helicopter crash after fighting taliban drug lords in western afghanistan. >> we're quite saddened by the loss of all three. three terrific heroes who were doing a great service to their nation. >> reporter: seven u.s. helicopters were killed in the same crash monday. eight more soldiers died today in two separate roadside bomb attacks. >> one thing we've seen that's been disheartening is as our troop levels have increased in afghanistan the number of casualties have increased as well. it's certainly something that the mrt have to consider when he weighs bringing additional troops. >> reporter: president obama is considering his war commander's request that an additional 40,000 troops be sent to afghanistan. more closed door decision-making sessions at the white house this week. experts say the taliban is watching. >> look at the president, ditherring on making addition and doubt in the congress and allies question u.s. leadership. the answer for them is easy. the more american we can kill the more likely it is americans will quit and go home. >> reporter: counter terrorism expert rick nelson is an afghanistan war veteran who served on the security council. he says there is no easy decisions. >> i think we need to be cautious of any report the war on terrorism. today a state department employee working in afghanistan resigned. foreign service officer matthew howe is thought to be the first u.s. official to quit in protest of the explosives. a deadly crash has investigators trying to put the pieces together. one teenager is dead, two others hurt after a 17-year-old driver lost control. tonight police want to know if the teenagers were drinking. fox 5's sherri ly has the "news edge.". >> reporter: the chevy fan flipped over landing on its side in the middle of the road in winchester. killing the driver, 17-year-old james gleason. two passengers survived. one of them 18-year-old derrick matthew, jr. his father says his son is hanging on in critical condition with a skull fracture and arm injuries. >> they have him sedated because of the ventilator and so he's not going to be able to say too much to anybody right now. >> reporter: the other survivor, 17-year-old nico mason is out of the hospital. he pulled the other two boys out his mother said but knew one of his friends was no longer alive. in the daylight you can see the tire marks on valley mill road in channing drive where the van ran off the road. virginia state police say gleason over corrected and lost control and alcohol may have been a factor. >> with this happening it will be a wake-up call. sometimes it takes this to straighten things like that out. you know, as far as underage drinking and stuff like that if that was the case. >> reporter: matthew says his son passed a breathalyzer test but can't speak for the others. family members of the two survivors say the boys were hanging out at gleason's house and were on the way to the store when the accident happened around midnight. police say they were not wearing seatbelts. under virginia law drivers under 18 are not allowed on the road after midnight. there are exceptions but a trip to the store is not one of them. in winchester, sherri ly, fox 5 news. three masked men forced their way into a home. tonight a search is underway to find them. laura evans is everywhere at 11. this happened at an apartment in prince georges county. a man returning home was accosted by a masked man who forcedis way into the victim's apartment. two other suspects joined in sdeelg cash, cell phones and a laptop. six people written side the home. no one was hurt. an arrest in the murder of jasper howard the university of connecticut football player. john lomax is accused in the stabbing following a school dance. howard was there celebrating a homecoming victory when someone pulled a fire alarm and howard was stabbed. lomax's attorney says he was trying to break up a fight. the coast guard admits a training exercise near the pentagon this past september 11th was not a good idea. an internal review finds the exercises did not violate policies but did prompt panic on the anniversary of the terror attackst fate grounded 70 flights during that incident. thank you. d.c.'s mayor
