And the lead. Got it. Backtoback at 6 and 7 for shane lowry. Back on the tee, here is Andrew Landry. This starts the toughest fourhole stretch here at oakmont. You know this hole might be talked about a lot. A demanding, uphill. Kind of keeps impressing everybody. Back here on the green, garcias cut for birdie. This is for a share of the lead with lowry. Leave it out to he missed a few of the right to lefters with too much break. Now lee westwood from about 187 yards. Hole location on this hole is back up into the left side. Great twoputt for par on the last. He is playing along Louis Oosthuizen down in florida. Played with another englishman, lee slattery. It helps we have not talked about it. These guys, good friends, played a lot of golf together. That is a heck of a shot. Eight feet away for birdie. Colin cowherd asked me if pairings mattered. I said you Better Believe nicklaus and palmer did. That drive would not miss any fairway. Now up to the 8th. Daniel summerhays for his birdie attempt. Best part of his game as he said, he proved it right there. Gets within three of shane lowry. Bears mentioning the top 11 on the leaderboard right now have never won a major. Capturing todays championship at 1,500 feet in the air is the metlife blimp, proudly supporting the game and over 40,000 small businesses. This time tomorrow night somebodys forever. Here at 12 for the shot. Fathauer. You heard him say how about a thin bladed one. There is a reason they say thin to win. Watch the slope of the green carry the ball to the back corner of the green. Quickly over to number 8. This one has got to hang on. The bunker on the left. Just shy of carrying the corner. Shouldnt be too bad. About a threefoot lip. Not one of the deepest here at oakmont. His reaction, so close. Now sergio. Today playing 247. With this hole location you cant be looking at it. Just have to be looking out to the right. Land it on the front edge of the green. Let it move back to the hole. There is no wind at all right now. Lets hope the pace is on so he can land it down the front edge. Not the cheap shot we would expect but it might turn out okay. There you go sergio. The greens are getting fast. Oakmont is back. Ahead to 9. Lee westwood. Now the hill breaking to the left. I like to have a coin in my way to give me a picture of what i can do to get it around it. Awesome birdie for westwood. Check this scorecard out. Birdie on the 2 kd, bogey at the 4, eagle at the 5, bogey, birdie at the 9th. Second hardest hole of the week has been the 9th. Now back to landry. You can see how far ahead Dustin Johnsons tee shot is. That is after a tee shot of 307 for landry. Right over the flag. It continues to pepper the flag. Back to the dustin with his second shot. That is just a wedge, brad after a tee shot of 330. Pretty simple hole location. He got it below the hole. That is where westwood had his putt for par. You talk about wedge opportunities, you dont think of the 7th hole as being one of them. But Dustin Johnson is so powerful. That face hardly rotating at all. He flattens that ball. I love how he stays in his posture. See if it comes off of that collar. Not having a good day. Hangs up there on the edge of the green. Jason day with his second. Great angle for this. I am not sure that is go to stay out to the right far enough. Yes, just does. Needs to simmer. Good shot. Still going. That is a great spot. Under par. Lee westwood at 10. Coming off of a birdie on 9. 3 under par, one shot back. And in the fairway, the tight fairway here on 10. When a guy chases it past those bunkers, they are almost a full shot better than the players who are not getting it by those sand traps, whether it is a choice or just power. Back to 8. I see shane lowry. Not that difficult of a dunker shot. He is tour. That maying a telling stat by the end of the week. Now scott piercy for birdie on 7. It is amazing what you do after you make birdie. Hit his best drive and second shot of the day. This is just a little bit from the right. Speed is not an issue here. 30 footer. Keep repeating what jason day said on day one. He would rather have a 30 footer from here than eight feet from above. Maybe piercy now. To give it a run and stroke. This kept his attention. These balls when they lose speed, they move so much. Now landrys putt for birdie. This is from right to left. And this is about speed. This is one of these things. This is crazy. He gets to 4 under par to tie lowry. He must have seen that. Great putt. Andrew landry continuing to impress. He looks like a cool customer right now. He looks like he belongs here. You see why they moved me out of the telestrator chair. Faxon had that nailed. Back to 8. See if lowry can save his par. He made two in a row. That is the tough part of the 8th green. The breaks are not as obvious as the other greens. Not as much slope. The flatter surface. Back to 7 green and d. J. He had to get a read off of piercy here. Well, it is not near the same type of putt. D. J. Coming off of the shoulder of the bunker in the front right of the green, it is going to break back to the right and straight to the hole. 167. Great view. Good read, curtis. Pat yourself on the back there d. J. That was a great putt. Clean this up to stay one back. Tied for third with garcia and westwood. Still going through his routine even though it is just over a foot. Lets take a look at putt and everybody at home can decide on the putt. Does the ball leave on the path he strokes it on or does it kick out . Looks to me like it leaves directly on the path just as he saw it. What do you think . I thought he did a great job there. The stroke looked good. The ball does hop off of his putter. We like his right to left stroke better than his left to right. Thank you. Here with mark brooks and gil. As the players head to the 8th hole, the longest par 3 in u. S. Open history but it is playing its shortest distance today. What goes into designing a long par 3 like this. They are already difficult because of the length. How do you jazz them up so you do not feel like you are piling on. I would be proud to design this one with the 100yard long the other thing that i really noticed is the open approach, get the balls to run on. Mark as a player the reason the bunker is 100 yards long it can play over 300 yards. They made the bunker really big. Keep an eye on the hole. Tomorrow it can be playing over 300 yards, joe. A moment ago after the mishit long iron, sergio. Golly, he just cant buy one today. At what point does frustration set in. Wasted so many opportunities. D. J. Grabbing a quick snack. I dont know about you but my mouth butter would be stuck to the roof. Water nearby. Guys have been out here a long time today, already over 2 hours and 15 minutes since they teed off, just on the 8th tee box. Scott piercy, just a 4 iron from 247. 233 to the front. This is going out to the right, steve. Looked a little out of sorts since the 1st tee. Hanging in there nicely. Isnt that a lot of the u. S. Open. You hang in there, you make two or three birdies and you leapfrog a lot of people. Opens, curtis . I used to be able to putt. A lot of execution there. Dustin. You know, just keep his rhythm. Keep his toempo. That is the big thing for him with a long swing. This is a 4 iron. About where sergio put it, about 15 feet right of the hole unless of course you can put it about 500 feet in the air. Goodness gracious, what a shot. 500 feet in the air. He cut it into the left hole location. That is the advantage that he has with his length. Long drives but long irons. Andrew landry before they played he was the first off of the tee. He has gone bogey, double bogey on this hole the first two rounds. Surely he will improve on those numbers this time. Good shot there with the hybrid. Back on 4 green, we saw the great iron shot in. This is for eagle. This to get within four. And he has done it. Started out the day nine behind the leaders and he is now within four. Ahead to 9 tee. Shane lowry, the tee shot on the 9th, an important tee shot. You cant miss it left here. Infinitely harder to make it from the left than the right if you miss. You got to hit it here. Right in between there. The hole slopes this way. You know he crosses the line. He reroutes it down. Helps him hit a draw. Beautiful drive. Over to 10. Second shot, lee westwood. One shot back, front of the green here at 10. He would like to be past the hole there, i am sure. Little mishit. To 9. Daniel summerhays with his birdie putt up the hill on 9. Great effort. Looked like dustins putt on 7. Second hardest h you cant be upset making a 4 there. Well, if you came into the United States only championship expecting to see the name Andrew Landry on top of the leaderboard here approaching the midway point of the third round, i dont believe you. Andrew landry is playing in his first major. He is from texas. He lives in austin. He is leading this u. S. Open by one over Dustin Johnson, sergio garcia, lee westwood and shane lowry. Here are some of the numbers on Andrew Landry. Ranked 624th in the world. 11 events played this year. He made five he leads the u. S. Open, tied for 41st is his best finish on the pga tour and that happened last week in memphis. His mom patricia and dad dwayne and older brother adam are all here to cheer him you on. Told his father i am going to win this tournament. What a fathers day surprise and gift that would be here tomorrow. You can train and train all you want. But until you get to the situation you never know how you are going to deal with it. It is nothing like what he is feeling right now. He never experienced anything like this before. He seems so composed. Talking about the cuts made. You look at when i said it before. He has not made the cut one, two three, four, his first five events. Cut again in new orleans. Finished tied for 41st, easily his best finish on tour. That was leading into this week here at oakmont country club. So, this is literally out of nowhere. Every time we have checked in with him he as appeared to be filled with confidence. He hasnt blinked. Over a little ridge and then down to the hole. Not much to it. It is just about speed, once again. What a he has been a professional since 2009. He has been through the grind. Westwood for birdie and a share of the lead here at 10. So fast down the hill. That ball never thought about going in. A par would leave him one back. We go back to 8. His ability to hit the 4 iron. One of the few people in the field that can get it into the hole location. Just so high in the air. This putt just over ten feet. If ther from the right but inside the hole. One of those putts that you dream about. Great players hit their long irons high and short irons both. Dustin does both. Maybe just a slight misread. Missed it low. Nuclear 4 iron. D. J. Has a front row seat right now for the Andrew Landry show. Leading by one is landry. Now the par putt for westwood. Unforced error. Coming up short on 10. Bites him. Landry now to clean up his par. Very solid on the short ones. We have seen lee westwood miss a number of short ones this week. But that one is rock steady. Lowry with a familiar draw into the left hole location. That will come closer. Shane lowry. This keeps trickling down there. He will have that putt to tie for the lead when we come back here at oakmont for the u. S. Open. Hey there, can i help you with anything . Hey siri, whats at ts latest offer . Oh, i dont think that siri can. Right now, switch to at t for an iphone and get one free. Wow, is that right . Dustin johnsons teshot on the th. Great drive. Really challenging the left drive there. Andrew landry, look at this. See the walking path . Urban legend is that it was built for ben hogan. They had paths built so ben hogan would never think of hitting it in the rough. Andrew landry trying to keep this up. He seems fearless at the moment. Reputation of being a great driver of the golf ball and a jason day here with a familiar spot on the 5th hole. Back up on the green here. Sergio garcia for a par. Drove it in trouble. Missed to the right. Hit it in that right pot bunker. Up towards the green. You miss this everything is sloping away from the left side. No over on 11. Look at this another blind shot here at oakmont. Often happens when you miss a short putt or a threeputt. A poor tee shot. I hate this lie. The heel tends to catch first. Really tease hit it fat. You cant Start Building the stance can you, david . That is correct. He is not doing it. He is just barely taking his stance. Ball below his feet here. Harder to get it up in the air sometimes. Almost. Terrible stance. Now he has another bunker shot. There you go. Look how close that his hands were. Now lowry back on the th. Birdie to share the lead. Boy he is a good putter. Does not look like he is afraid to be in the lead. He makes the turn here on the big 9th green. Garcia. Garcia for his bogey after a miracle bogey on the 1st and the 9th, a couple of birdies there. Only two back where he started. Over to the 16th. Branden grace for birdie. After how well that he played last year. The 16th hole on sunday is where he hit it on the Railroad Tracks to the right at chambers bay. But look at this. Back to even par and within four. Now lets go back to 9. Scott piercy from the right rough. And a horrible lie. Got a lot of club on it. Ryan getzlaf it up close enough from 210. I mentioned it before how second hardest. If you miss in the left rough the stroke averages five. 4. 6. Fairway or bunkers obviously. Fairway, still difficult. Keep it away from the left side and you have a better chance. Great closeup look here at landrys grip. 182 yards. You dont think he is pumped up. Only 13 behind Dustin Johnson who smoked it. That is absolutely where you cant play from. That went way down and he will have an impossible shot. I dont think that he knows how bad that is right now. Now 169 up the hill. Cannot see the surface of the right at it. Right at the chimney. He gets the slow tilt there. He has got it past the hole. Saw the blue stake over by landrys shot. Dustin johnson can see it there. That deliniates with the playing part of the 9th with the practice part of the 9th. The players that want to practice cannot go to the greenside or the hole side of this stick to practice on. But if your ball goes there and you are in the competition, no problem. You only get relief from a cut that is down there to practice. But you can move. That will be able to pull that out. Landry is playing in his fir first, ranked 624th in the world. Dan oneal of the st. Louis postdispatch chasing down quotes said of this from landry as we go down to lee westwood up ahead at 11. Greenside bunker shot now for westwood. A lot of room here. Great shot for westwood. Good 4 there after bunkering his tee shot. Going back to 9. What landry said prior to the round, i did it with q school as well. I told myself if i get into the u. S. Open or q school i will be able to make it and i will be able to do fine. He thinks the u. S. Open suits his game. Able to manage things because he is not a guy that is going to shoot 61 or 62 consistent. He is going to shoot 68 and make a lot of pars. Hopefully he can execute this and get it up on the green. The real error would be to leave it short of the green and bring double bogey into play. Piercy may go first here. Not an easy shot, paul. He has got a drainage between himself and the hole and has to negotiate that. I think he can carry it up on the back plateau. This is one of the most diabolical greens that you will ever see. Absolutely not. He went down. What a shot that this was. Wonderful touch. Beautiful shot by piercy. It is great to see shots like that. That is nothing but imagination. You cant practice that at home. If you had any chance to see landrys lie. I have. Let me just tell you that i think the best that he can do is probably 20 feet if he drops it and lands it in the intermediate cut he can get lucky. Horrible lie. He just went over and had a quick chat with thomas hagel of the usga who is in charge of the rules, david. I dont know. But i will check and know. Third shot here at 9. This reminds me of dustins shot on 3. Just get it past the hole. This is a lot more difficult, brad. If he gets too cute he is surely looking at double. Get it on the green and give yourself a chance. That is all that he can do. Smart play. Looked like he was playing away from the flag intentionally. Landry looking at his first bogey of the day. He Martin Kaymer the only guys in the field in the third round not to make a bogey. I watched justin rose hit a putt here to this hole location the first twoputts that rose hit, 30 feet away. Tough putt. 6th hole. Even par is jason day at the par 3. Best round of the day going. 5 under par. Right at it. Only two birdies away from shooting a 63, jason day at this point. That has been done here before. Lowry, down the hill here. Over to 10. The green runs away. Only 133 yards. Super shot. Hang in there. Okay. We are going back up the hill. Shane started playing the game at the age of 12. Taught himself on the course he grew up. Driving range and he spent a lot of time chipping and putting and he will try to run that one in here as he has a share of the lead at 4 under par with this man, Andrew Landry. Landry has a very difficult putt for par here. You saw rose having the putt 30 feet away, what was going on . It goes up the slope and then hard to the right. You have to keep the speed up early in this putt. 60 feet. Great putt. He is always he did not make double. Good job. David. Well, landrys question was if he wanted to play a low running shot, there was a sprinkler head between the ball and the hole. He wanted to know if he could get relief. The socalled british open, two club lengths and the answer is no. You only have that when you are playing on a course like chambers bay or pinehurst. It is a fair question. Garcia at the 10th. The second shot. Hit it a mile down the hill. That is the side that you want to land on. But who would have thought that would go backwards from there. Now that putt would be really fast. Now look where dustin is aiming this thing. He is actually on the putting green, putting back to the 9th green. There is a huge slope right here. He is going to have to go around, almost make it stop. They all watch to see the angle. Slow down. He hit a good drive and a good iron and he hit a putt like that. You just cant ever practice anything like that. They are only here monday, tuesday and wednesday. Not playing 18 holes every day. You have to trust your feel. You have to trust your eyes. Your imagination to be able to hit a putt like that. As you watch Dustin Johnson look at this par putt here on 9, we have about anoth daylight left. Dustin johnson obviously will not finish. We will see Dustin Johnson and those towards the top of the leaderboard tomorrow at 7 00 a. M. On fs1. So they will get after it early. Then they will reshuffle the deck, pair up. Play the final round on fox. Here is your worm cam. You have to decide to cut across. Is he doing it exactly as he hoped and just misreading it. Good solid twoputt for Dustin Johnson. He is pleased with the way he is putting. He is not the lone ranger when it comes to that. Garcia, westwood. Week. Piercy for a brilliant save here. Not a gimme. A little bit of break there. Dustin johnson, well under the average here at oakmont. I think they have a pretty famous hot dog here at oakmont. I had one when we were up here for media day. They also love crustables here at Oakmont Oakmont country club. They freeze them. It is a thing of beauty. Course. Here is garcia at 10 here for birdie. To 6 the par 3. Jason day with the long birdie putt. He started tied for 45th. Now he is tied for 46th. That is why they call saturday moving day. Jason day has made a move. Only player in the top 12 that has won a major is jason day. They talk about how important that it would be to finish the round for some of these players as we go back to the scott piercy. Great up and down at 9. Iron in his hand. Stroke average on 10. Players choose to lay up. Full shot. Nearly a full shot higher than the players that drive it past the bunkers. Give me that stat there. Oakmont going to give you opportunities to make decisions. It is a risk reward. You can make a mockery of a whole here at oakmont occasionally. It is your own peril if you do not execute. This man is not laying up short of the bunkers. Just phenomenal. He is on auto pilot. Great example of strength. Him being able to hit a 3 wood there and drive it so far down the hole, such an advantage for guys having to hit driver or laying up and leave it way back. Not only that but he hit it out there where there are no divots to worry about either. Dont you think the pressure starts to build on the back side . I do. It will come after a nice of sleep because they are not going to finish. Well that it is the last night of sleep that tends to get you the most. Now over to lowry here on the 10th. Just a moment ago. Ooh. Nearly opened up a twoshot lead. Amazing what one more night of sleep can do to a guy. Lowry, shane lowry leading this u. S. Open as he will head to 11 here in round three. Limits are there to be shattered. Barriers are meant to be broken. Lines are drawn to be crossed. Part of the f performance line. Once driven, theres no going back. And now on the tee. Justin thomas. How about jason day. Jason day is not just making a major move here in the third round but he has a chance to finish his round and get a little extra rest than the guys ahead of him. If he finishes his round, brad, i think he will be thrilled at that, not having to come out at 7 00 a. M. To finish it out. Who knows what time they will tee it up tomorrow afternoon. He will be in a foot race to get it done. All he has to do is hit his second shot into the hole. What it means is that he does not have to get up at 5 00 in the morning for his afternoon tee time. Second shot, Andrew Landry. 8 iron from 178. That shows mehe to land it well short. Stayed short, curtis. That is so fast. Big right to left break as well. Dustin just drove it 53 yards by landry. Another advantage looking right at it. Pretty simple shot. Wants to land it just right of the flag and fly it all the way to the hole. Did not mishit many but he definitely mishit that one. Lets go to 7. Jason rough on the golf course. Look at that. That is going to be some kind of difficult shot. We will see that shot and jason day finish here at 7 and likely finish his third round on fs1. We ask you to switch over in just a bit. We are going to step aside here on fox.
