news as they had some severe weather out to the west. that line of showers and thunderstorms will make it into the washington area later today. we have a better chance of seeing some scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. i think we'll wake up kind of hot and steamy and temperatures will quickly climb into the 80s. later this afternoon, the hans of some widespread showers and today, his family is meeting with the fbi and pleading for the public to help find 26-year- old matt hill. fox 5's sherrily is on that story this morning and -- sherry ly is on that story this morning and she joins us live from chinatown. >> reporter: good morning. matt hill disappeared from here at ninth and eighth streets near chinatown. est -- he was last seen on tuesday morning. tease police are calling this a critical missing person case. the 26-year-old hill directs outreach for his church at george washington university. tuesday, around 10:30 a.m., he dropped off a student he was meant ouring at 9th and 8th streets. of his supposed to go to his church, capitol hill baptist church next but instead and to stop at his apartment. someone used his gas card at a station before noon on tuesday. his black four-tour honda civic is now missing. hill disappeared without a trace leaving few clues. >> come lootly out of matt's character to ever just take off and just leave without saying anything to anybody. we do believe he is in danger or some type of foul play occurred. >> reporter: friends say hill's cell phone has been off since he disappeared. no one has heard from him since then. his father and brother arrived very late last night from north carolina. they will be meet with the fbi today in hopes of stepping up police efforts to try to find him. there may be a break in the death of an american university professor. sue ann marcum was found dead last october. this morning, police have a warrant charging jorge londeros with murder. detectives think he is in mexico. a big victory on capitol hill in the fight to prevent a traffic nightmare in northern virginia. the house passed a bill to delay the opening of the defense department's massive mark center office building along 395 in standsery. they are doing this until some new roads and ramps can be built. virginia lawmakers are now looking to lock down more funds. nearly$100million have been put forth by the department of defense and the state to make the improvements which would take about two years to finish. >> the problem is this is just such a bad idea to move more than 6,000 people to a place house for president obama's final signature. the funeral for a state trooper killed in the line of duty will be held today. trooper shaft hunter's viewing was held yesterday in baltimore county. he died when his cruiser crashed early saturday morning on southbound interstate 95 in howard county. the cruiser slammed into a tractor-trailer. hunter may have been pursuing a speeding motorcyclist at the time. his funeral service begins at 11:00 a.m. at the new antioch baptist church in northwest baltimore. so voter work to investigate suspected terrorists will go on for at least another four years. congress passed extensions of some key provisions of the patriot act before they were to expire at midnight. those were powers created after 9-11 it make it easier to search records and conduct wiretaps. president obama was able to sign the bill using an auto been machine. it is something that holds a pen and actually signs the president's signature. in france, president obama has been in meetings today with other leads of g-8 nations. this afternoon, mr. obama leaves france for poland and a meeting of central europe other than leaders. now, to the midwest where the search for survivors goes on following that massive tornado in joplin, missouri. but few are being found. as crews continue digging through debris for the missing and state and federal officials working together to try to account for everyone. an estimated 8,000 buildings were destroyed in joplin. at least 15 people were killed. meanwhile, more wicked weather cuts through the region. clean-up is under way system all associated with an area of low pressure out to the west. but the good news is, without the sunshine, the storms have been dying out overnight. with all the rain they got last night and with the potential for more rain out to the west, we do have a flash flood watch issued for western portions of maryland and west virginia. here in washington, it looks like we have a better chance of showers and thunderstorms later today. this whole system will push a little closer to the washington area. we could kick up a few showers and thunderstorms today and tomorrow. as we get into the end of the weekend into sunday and monday being high pressure will take over and that will leave us hot and steamy with high temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s. i think the chance for thunderstorms at each intersection traveling between richmond and 495. a remind are, if you ride metro this memorial day weekend, on the blue and orange lines, capital south, eastern market, potomac avenue and stadium armory will all an closed for track maintenance. a key republican lawmaker wants to sell amtrak's northeast corridor train service. the chairman. house transportation committee says putting the service up to bids could bring faster trains to the northeast. the northeast corridor runs from washington, d.c. to boston. congressman john mica of florida is introducing the legislation in the house but it is likely to get rejected by the senate. the next spending plan for montgomery and prince george's counties are set. budgets have been approved by both county councils. prince george's lawmaker passed a $2.7 billion budget for the fiscal year beginning july 1st and more than half of that is for schools fundings. other high heights include money for one-time $750 bonuses for county employees. in montgomery count you, the budget come in at $4.4 billion. that is a slight increase over last year's spending plan. county workers will not see a raise next year. they will have to pay more for the benefits. some cals in d.c. are trying to cash in with stolen copper. they are going underground to get it and leaving some people literally in the dark. fox 5's wis to him mart unhas more -- wisdom martin has more on the story. >> reporter: if you noticed in recent weeks that the sidewalk lights along kenilworth avenue were dark or the 295 overhead sign was not work, the d-d.o.t. spokesperson says something was missing. >> this isn't uncommon that thieves take copper. >> reporter: police say at least four times in the last few weeks, chopper-snatching criminals have taken electrical copper wire from underground. >> they are targeting our infrastructure and actually taking copper wire out of our electrical conduits. >> reporter: in one case, they stole wire that powers the sidewalk lights along kenilworth avenue. le copper wire that powers the d.c. 295 overhead sign was stolen between polk and eastern avenue. >> a couple of public safety issues there. obviously, for the traveling public, the streetlights go out, if the signs aren't illuminated. but also for the people who are doing it. if you don't do it right, if you trip up, you could be electrocuted. >> reporter: it turns out these criminals actually got in the grass median and went underneath the manhole covers. >> it is quite possible they did set up as if this were a contractor or a road crew that was doing work and used that as their guise to carry out the thefts. >> reporter: they struck a thunder time last week on south capital and potomac streets and north capital and irving. d-d.o.t. is currently in
